ReGroup helps members focus on what derails groups from being meaningful and supportive, so everyone's experience improves. The companion video is funny and sad, at the same time, when it shows how group members mess up - AND many people think they're good group members until lovingly and firmly shown their mistakes. ReGroup captures the most important points to make a group go from 'Do I have to go? or Hate that group!' to 'I really want to attend!" People need help to be good group members - every one of us!

This book is based on a CD that is not included with the book. I ordered the book not knowing that and it pretty much needs the CD. It might be great with the CD, but since I don't have it, I don't know.

About the Author

Scot McKnight (PhD, Nottingham) is the Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament at Northern Seminary in Lombard, Illinois. Another Lily adventure

In this episode of the Lily series, Lily's in London?!, written by Nancy Rue, Lily's father is taking his family to Oxford, England for a year so he can teach at the university there. Lily, like her siblings Joe and Tessa, has to leave her school and friends. Their older brother, Sam, stays behind in the States.

Lily goes to England with an attitude. She doesn't want to leave everything behind and she doesn't like her new home. The house in Oxford has only three bedrooms so she has to share a room with younger sis Tessa who can be a pest; her mother is home schooling the kids; and Lily doesn't have any friends in England. What is she supposed to do?

In addition to being out of sorts about her new life situation, she finds herself having difficulty feeling close to God. Over the course of a few days she starts exploring her new surroundings. In the process she meets several people - a nun at the Church of England, a girl who lives down the street, the son of a college professor - who teach her that God can be found in all the little details of life as well as the big ones.

What I Like: I liked reading the story because the author included lots of description about places in England that really exist. I've been to England and the author's voice was authentic in terms of making the places seem real, because they really are!

Also, as always, the author weaves important lessons into the storyline.

What I Dislike: Maybe it's just me, but I think it a bit pretentious for Lily's family to stay at Claridge's in London. Claridge's is a five-star hotel that caters to the wealthy. With rooms that cost about 250 pounds per night (that translates to almost $500 per night), it's not someplace most people can afford to stay. Most readers just can't relate to that.

Also, the title is a bit misleading. Lily does make a trip to London, but it's at the end of the book. Most of the story is centered around her new life in Oxford.

Overall Rating: Very good.

This book rocks!

I love this book! I can read it several times in a row, and not get tired of it! However, I miss the Girlz in it! Kresha is my favorite character and I was so sad when it hardly mentions any of them at all. I also didn't get the whole "pilgramige" thing. I wish they made it a bit clearer.

Where's the analysis and critique?

This book is extremely important in the history of Reformed social thought. It delineates a new movement in Reformed thought. In responding to theonomy, the authors of this "critique" posit a functional anabaptist political ethic that is foreign to the Reformers. In my review I will set forth the theonomic thesis, illustrate how 75% of the book failed to come to grips with it (some chapters didn't even mention it!) and offer my own criticism of theonomy. In the review I will show how some authors contradict other authors (within the same book!) and how other authors do not even address the thesis.

As a caveat, I should mention I am not a Bahnsenian theonomist. My position is strictly that of John Knox, Samuel Rutherford, and Richard Cameron.

The body of the book:
The book tries to critique theonomy along exegetical, eschatological, theological, historical, and socio-economic lines.

Moises Silva writes a theonomic essay refuting Meredith Kline ("Galatians 3:19"). Silva writes nothing that contradicts Bahnsen, but much that contradicts Bahnsen's main critic. Why was this essay even in the book?

Richard Gaffin argues that theonomy is wrong because many theonomists are postmillennialists, which bothers Gaffin's amillennarianism. There are two problems to Gaffin's essay: 1) He miscontrues postmillennialism (I think all millennial views are bunk); 2) eschatological positions do not logically determine social ethics.

Bruce Walke argues that Theonomy is distinct from mainstream covenant theology and from dispensationalism. So? All Waltker did was show where Bahnsen differed from Kline and where both differed from standard Covenant Theology. Where's the critique?

Will Barker argues for a pluralist approach to civil government. The problem with this is that pluralism--everyone has a right to practice their faith as long as it doesn't harm others--has logical tensions within it. What if my faith says I *can* harm others? At this point the pluralist sees the theonomic trap: if he says yes then he is advocating a form of theonomy--the civil magistrate is evidently imposing his values by force on someone's religion. If the pluralist says no, then he has no logical or moral objection to satanic human sacrifice (cf the Santierra cult in 1989).

Tim Keller and John Muether write economic and sociological essays respectively. That's fine and Muether makes a few good points, but neither touch the theonomic *system.* Keller even admits that his position--state socialism--has universally failed whenever applied. Did the editors just miss this?

Bob Godfrey argues from Book 4 of Calvin's Institutes that Calvin opposed the use of the Mosaic Judicials. That's true, technically. However, in Calvin's sermons on Deuteronomy he goes much further in than do theonomists in advocating those same judicials. Anyway, Calvin also didn't have a problem with the city of Geneva executing Servetus. And when Calvin advocated things like natural law and the law of nations, he was--like everyone else in Western Europe--presupposing Christendom as the backgdrop for interpreting "law of nations." In other words, he would have rejected the secularism of Westminster Seminary in California. Further, Godfrey fails to deal with Calvin's sermons on Deuteronomy 27-28, which argue for the modern applicability of covenantal sanctions (something that goes far beyond what Bahnsen ever argued!).

Sinclair Ferguson doe the chapter on the Westminster Confession. Essentially Ferguson argues that not everyone at the Westminster Assembly was a theonomist, although some were. I agree. However, as Bahnsen points out and probably 0% of Calvinists understand, the Confession isn't using the phrase "general equity" in a Platonic sense. Ferguson's essay is probably the best. He appeals to Samuel Rutherford where Rutherford seems to distance himself from what would be the Bahnsenian line, but this is a strained move. Rutherford, as we shall see below, had no problem with the justice of the case law penalties.

Tremper Longman suggests that if theonomy is right, then we will have something like Deuteronomy 13, where one city burns another for idolatry. Well, Samuel Rutherford praised the parliaments of England and Scotland for hanging Jesuits on the basis of...that's right, you guessed it!!!...Deuteronomy 13! (See Rutherford, Peaceful Plea for Paul's Presbytery, chapter 6).

Claire Davis writes an appreciation of theonomy. He says that American culture's antinomianism has warranted a theonomic response (what's this essay doing in the book?!) Davis specifically says "Even if culture gets worse and worse, does that refute theonomy? Not necessarily. Even in such a culture, believers have an obligation to bring their values into the public square, even if it means persecution." Wow. Among other things that one paragraph refutes Gaffin's entire essay. Davis, unlike 99.9% of the academic Reformed world, understands that *is* does not always equal *ought* in normative ethics.

Conclusion:
After reading these essays I got the impression that the real bad guy is not theonomy, but conservative political ethics. After this publication the Presbyterian church hasn't had much of a voice in social ethics. That mantle has been passed to the Baptists (see the fine work of Russell Moore).

I am not a full-blown theonomist, nor am I really postmillennial (I hold to historicism). I applaud the theonomists for developing a life-and-worldview. I would urge them to do more exegesis.

Great Refutation of Theonomy

Contrary to the other reviewer, the various authors DID read Rushdoony, North, Bahnsen et al. I was at Westminster Seminary when this book was being written and had conversations with some profs as they were preparing their contributions. Theonomy is many things. Some people think it is simply taking God's word & law seriously. In that case, pretty much anyone can be called a Theonomist. On the other hand, others use the banner of "Theonomy" to promote all sorts of hyper conservative sectarian absurdities. By the way, Theonomists often claim C. VanTil as a "Theonomist". I was Dr VanTil's personal secretary later in life, and he several times asserted he was NOT a Theonomist. Although he did appreciate Greg Bahnson as one of his finer students. One can find quotations here & there about theonomy in VanTil's books, but remember these were all written long before there was this identifiable cluster of doctrines called "theonomy." He was using the term in a generic sense. Theonomists are dishonest when they claim VanTil as one of their own. There is one very weak chapter in this book. The other essays are well done. Quite frankly, this book is about all there is contra Theonomy because Theonomy is such a chameleon, changing its colors & positions regularly. About the only thing that Binds Theonomists together is an unhealthy focus upon the Law (often to neglect of Grace, but see John 1:17). As pointed out in this book, THE fundamental error of most Theonomy is that it reads the NT through the lens of the OT. On the other hand, historically the Church has read the OT in light of the NT. They start out backwards & end up getting too much wrong. This book is a calm, level headed refutation of excesses of much Theonomy. Christianity is all about Jesus, not the law!

THE MAJOR "REFORMED" RESPONSE TO THEONOMY AND "CHRISTIAN RECONSTRUCTION"

This 1990 book contains sixteen essays by faculty members of Westminster Theological Seminary, criticizing both the "Theonomic" (i.e., "God's law") and broader "Christian Reconstruction" viewpoints of persons such as their former students Gary North and Greg Bahnsen. The Preface to this volume states, "The purpose of this volume is to offer a reply from within the Reformed camp, from which theonomy has sprung... the authors of this book share with theonomy many basic theological commitments... The point at issue, however, is one of fundamental hermeneutical perspective: How is the Israelite theocracy under the Mosaic law to be understood and its typological significance related to the proper role of the church and the state today?"

One essayist says, "Most disturbing to those who are introduced to theonomy for the first time, it seems, is its advocacy, not only of the Mosaic case law, but also of its system of punishments. The death penalty for murder is one thing to the contemporary Christian; death for ... intercourse with one's wife during her period, adultery, and blasphemy is another." (Pg. 41) He adds, "Most Christians agree that the death penalty is still in effect for murder, but Bahnsen and Rushdoony extend the list of capital offenses ... (to include) sabbath breaking, kidnapping, apostasy ... false pretension to prophecy... propagating false doctrines... rejecting a decision of the court, and failing to restore bail." (Pg. 44) An essayist asserts, "God caused his special presence to rest in the midst of Israel... However, God has not chosen America as a nation. He does not dwell on the banks of the Potomac as he did on Mount Zion... The church does not seek the death of blasphemers who are in the church but their excommunication." (Pg. 48)

Another argues, "Bahnsen will not concede the obvious point that in Matthew 5:38-42 Christ abrogates the principle of immediate justice; Christ will bring justice in the parousia... The many specific changes of the law in the New Testament seriously undermine the thesis that the burden of proof rests upon the interpreter to show that the law is not in force." (Pg. 81)

Still another asks, "If theonomy is the consistent teaching of Scripture and the Westminster Confession of Faith, why does it seem that we have discovered it only now, in late twentieth-century America? Why not, say, in seventeenth-century England or in nineteenth-century Holland?" (Pg. 245)

This book is "must reading" for people on ANY side of the Christian Reconstruction/Theonomy debate.

Summary: When super-powered eco-terrorist Tempest attacks an oil rig, the equally powered Hand of the Morningstar team fly in to save lives and put a stop to Tempest's mayhem. As the world praises the team, the superheroes redirect the world's attention to their mysterious and supernatural leader, the Morning Star, the person with a plan to save the world.

Review: I'm just going to spoil the review up front and say that I absolutely love this series! The series is an eight volume story that is highly character driven, filled with awesome super-powered fights, and a theological subtext that brought me to tears a number of times.

The book was originally written by Brett Burner and Mike Miller, with the art being drawn by Mike Miller as well. As the series progressed, Miller dropped off and newcomer Eric Ninaltowski took over the art and Ben Avery also joined the writing team. Usually a change in the creative team (although Burner stayed on the series throughout) is never a good sign, but all eight of the titles were written and drawn well.

The graphic novel series bogged down a little during volumes four and five, but that's really my only complaint.

Hand of the Morningstar is a complex super-hero story. The heroes aren't all heroes. Some of the bad guys use language and phrases like a church-going person might use . . . and that's terrifying. We're exposed to a wonderful love story, and exploration on truth and deception, redemption, damnation and the ultimate source of power. Fans of comics, superheroes, complex characters and action absolutely need to check out these books.

The books are appropriate for junior high levels and up.

Killing was unnecessary

I enjoyed it except for the fact Kami was killed. I thought it was unnecessary. I wish it was more specific on his salvation. And Michael didn't even pray for him, I would've liked that.

Kristian Anderson passed away in January 2012, after a well-documented battle with cancer.  He left his beloved wife, Rachel, and his two young sons.  He also left an inspiring manuscript , put together from his popular blog posts and other writings.  Rachel Anderson lives in Australia with their two boys.  She has contributed her perspective and insight to this powerful story.

amazing love

I just finished reading Days Like These by Kristian & Rachel Anderson. It took me a while to read (like a month and a half) not because I didn't like it but because emotionally I couldn't handle to read more than a little bit at a time. In the fall of 2009 Kristian Anderson was diagnosed with cancer in his bowel and liver, he was thirty-four years old. Kristian and his beautiful wife, Rachel, had 2 little boys - both who were under the age of three at the time. Kristian started a blog to keep his friends and family up to date with his condition and treatments. Days Like These is that blog plus some things that Rachel added after Kristian passed away. I feel that while reading this book I learned a lot about chemotherapy and radiation treatments. I knew what they were before but reading an account that someone made while going through these things is very different. There are many examples of the faith that Kristian and Rachel had during this time (neither one of them are saints and they say that time and time again) that God would help them with what they were going through. Kristian references several songs and bible verses throughout his blog and at the end of each entry in the book there is a qr code and a web address so that you can can hear the songs (which is nice because some of the bands are from New Zealand and I had never heard of them).
Kristian reached a point with do gooders (people who mean well but don't express themselves well) during his treatments and came up with this rule for interacting with him and his family:
When you come to me or my family, there is now a dress code in effect. Come to us wearing Faith and Hope, and you will be warmly welcomed. Come to us wearing Fear and Doubt, and you will politely be asked to leave. This dress code will be strictly enforced. No expectations.

I liked that. It is true. My uncle Bruce was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last fall and being positive and faithful that things will work out how they are supposed to is really the best thing anyone can do (though that is VERY hard sometimes).

I really enjoyed reading this book because it is a first hand account from someone who actually battled with cancer. Kristian shares his ups & downs and his hopes & fears holding nothing back with great honesty:
People talk of lives being touched by cancer. My life wasn't "touched"; it was assaulted. I'm being held up at gunpoint, and I'm pissed about it too. But I will never let cancer see fear or intimidation in my eyes. The harder it fights me, the harder I fight back. I have everything to lose, and that fact alone makes me incredibly dangerous. So many times people associate cancer with death, and while that is the case for many people, it is not the case here. Cancer is most definitely inconvenient. It is most definitely an intrusion into our lives. It is something I would not wish on my worst enemy, but while it is here, there are good things to be taken from it. Genesis 50:20 (MSG) records these words: "Don't you see, you planned evil against me but God used those same plans for my good, as you see all around you right now -- life for many people." I have an opportunity in front of me that most people rarely get. I have the opportunity to reclaim life from a place where there is usually death. That makes me one of the luckiest people on the planet.
I guess that another reason that I read the book slowly is that I thought maybe if I read it slowly or don't finish it then Kristian won't die in the end. It is silly I know but I think we have all read fiction books that we have done this with. I really enjoyed reading Kristian and Rachel's story. I loved reading about the AMAZING love that they had and have for each other. You should read this book too. If you live close I will even let you borrow it.

Insurmountable Faith

Kristian Anderson is determined to beat his cancer. He has faith that he will be healed. He chronicles his journey of the fight of his life in this book. He is transparent with his cancer. At times, it was difficult to read because I knew that he did not survive. And then he comes to grips that he's losing the battle.

I am completely in utter amazement that he fought to write these gut-wrenching moments down. And then I came to the realization that sometimes God uses others to make an impact on another person's life. I think Kristian's story is a testament of insurmountable faith. Faith is how he made it as far as he did.

Sprinkled throughout the book are pictures and scan codes for links to videos such as his video to his wife, Rachel. If you missed it, grab your tissue and watch it on You Tube (Search Kristian Anderson video to his wife).

It's so easy to get wrapped up in the race of life. Slow down. Enjoy the moments because they are few. Fewer than we may realize. Put down your phone, pay attention to your kids. Look at the world through their eyes. Time is short. They are only `kids' for a little while. The video is a reminder of what's important. And guess what? It's not money or your stuff. It's people. People matter. It doesn't take much to make a difference in another person's life. A short E-mail, phone call, or even a simple smile can make a difference. This book is a great reminder of this simple concept.

I am undone.

I debated over selecting this book to review... could my heart take the memories?

My mother died of cancer in December of 2008. She did not opt for chemotherapy and the other mainstream drug treatments that doctor's had to offer. Instead, she decided to treat her cancer through natural remedies, supplements, and dietary changes. I do not begrudge the treatment she chose and after reading Kristian's story, I don't think either of them had it any easier or better off than the other, only different suffering.

I appreciated the faith and honest struggles that Kristian describes in this book. He is very candid about his daily ups and downs. There is NOTHING good to be said of this killer, but I think Kristian lived with as much integrity and hope as was possible. I lived through what his wife Rachel had to experience, and know what it's like to be left behind, while your loved one has gone on to their Heavenly home.

I have to say, the last two chapters undid me. Totally, wrecked me! I COULDN'T stop crying. I can not describe adequately the painful, ugly destruction that cancer had on his body in every possible way, and ultimately, the beautiful way his soul was released into glory, his earthly battle over. Anyone that has been touched by cancer will be able to relate (unfortunately) to something physically or emotionally with this book.

This book has challenged my heart to make a conscious choice to live every day like it could be my last. How I speak to, interact, and live with others could be my final moments. Why wait until time's almost up to start living with eternity in mind?

The best single book on this vital subject.

An excellent, practical overview of the spiritual gifts that are available today. He contrasts the nature of the gifts to talents, the fruit of the Spirit, ministries etc. to put them in the clearest light. This has become our standard text in our course on spiritual gifts in the Twin Cities Bible Institute.

Best of Breed!

This is the finest work available on spiritual gifts. The author carefully defines spiritual gifts, distinguishing them from talents (p21), offices (p18) and fruit (p18). He identifies 18 spiritual gifts, combining service and helps (p47) and ruling and administration (p44). He holds pastor-teacher to be a single gift with two dimensions (p59). McRae is a cessationist, believing that some of the gifts were needed only until the canon of Scripture was complete and the apostles had passed off the scene (pp 55, 65,66,72, 73, 75, 80). His tone is irenic and constructive. McRae considers celebacy and hospitality, but removes them from his list (p80). He has an excellent section on women and spiritual gifts (pp 85-86). McRae identifies prayer, study, desire, ability, and blessing as five steps to identifying one's spiritual gift (p110).

Excellent biblical treatment of Spiritual Gifts.

This book is an excellent review of the spiritual gifts, including their origin, purpose, and use in the local church. I appreciate the fact that it is thoroughly biblical and doctrinally sound. It is must reading for anyone who is seriously seeking to understand the nature of spiritual gifts.

Jacqueline Kinney Johnson is a former tribal missionary to the Kuna Indians located on the Colombian border in Central America. The vision for The Princess Parable Series was born in these jungles. She is the wife of Pastor Ralph Johnson and the mother of two daughters and the grandmother of three princesses, Catherine, Alexandra Grace, and Megan Joy and four young knights, Zack, Payton, Maverick, and Christopher. Omar Aranda studied Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he was born. Cute Book!

About a year ago I was looking for a cute, somewhat sweet book for two little girls in our family. And I found this "princess" series.
The girls who are 8 and 6 love, love these books!
So, I was excited when A Royal Christmas to Remember came out.
This is such a cute, pretty princess book that I actually thought about keeping it for myself.
When I was little I remember the stories about Cinderella and Snow White. What little girl doesn't want to be a princess! But those stories do have somewhat "evil" intentions in them....funny as a kid I didn't see the evil.
Anyway, A Royal Christmas to Remember is what I would call the christian version of Snow White and Cinderella.
Of course, this story is all about Christmas but more than that it focuses on the true meaning of Christmas...Jesus' birth.
Such a wonderful book for girls (of all ages).

Genuine caring

My 9 year old daughter has loved this series for awhile now and this book did not disappoint! We truly enjoyed the princesses heart change during the story. They were once focused on their presents but then they were selfless and gave their gifts away because of the big problem within the story.

There is drama and action in this hard covered story book. Pictures are delightful and the author keeps you turning the pages with some on the edge of your seat problems the princesses faced.

If you are looking for more Christmas stories this season then pick this one up! It is not just for girls as my 5 year old son loved it too.

5 Princesses Learn to Give at Christmas

“Christmas means giving to others, not storing up for ourselves,” the princesses are reminded in Jeanna Young and Jaqueline Johnson’s children’s book, A Royal Christmas to Remember.

~ What ~
Part of the Princess Parables series, this thirty-two-page oversized hardbound with a glittery embossed front cover targets young girls ages four to eight years old. With no scary scenes except the girls being tied up by hoodlums, the book is about five sibling princesses who learn Christmas is not strictly about getting gifts. The ending includes verses from the New International Version of the Holy Bible.

With brightly colored drawings that are easy to understand, the tale is about five princesses who tell their father they need a larger storage house to hold all the Christmas decorations. When the king has to leave the castle due to a band of marauders in the village, the girls are frightened when several thieves break in and tie them up. Five young squires come to their rescue, and when their father returns, the girls offer to give gifts and decorations to the vandalized town. The final two pages have a short story about the parable in the Bible of the rich ruler.

~ Why ~
Little girls who are into being or reading about princesses may like this book that concentrates on giving to others at Christmas time instead of receiving. I like how colorful and expressive the designs are that will keep a young reader’s attention.

~ Why Not ~
Those who do not believe Jesus birth is the main focus of Christmas will avoid this book. Some may not like that it is geared toward girls with all the princess connotations, but a group of males the same ages as the girls are included. Beginner readers may find the two- and three-syllable words hard to comprehend or understand.

~ Who ~
Author Young is a cancer survivor who has written over a dozen children’s books. She lives in California with her husband and four children. Also living in the sunshine state, author Johnson and her husband have seven grandchildren, and she is devoted to teaching young ones about God. Illustrator Aranda was born in Argentina and has produced artworks worldwide, focusing mainly on children’s products.

~ Wish ~
The mother in the story is referred to but not involved so if the reader does not know about her status from prior books in the series, there may be some confusion. This also applies to the young boys who are named; I did know if they are in prior books or not since I have read and reviewed only a few of them.

~ Want ~
If your young princess has enjoyed other books in this series, this may be a nice present for her under the Christmas tree this year.
