About the Author
Youth and family ministry worker and counselor David Lynn has worked with young people and their families for more than three decades. He’s the creator of TalkSheets and author of numerous books, the creator of Building up Your Ministry, and he conducts several leadership training workshops. He lives with his family in Tucson, Arizona.

Rick Davis has served in active ministry since 1970. He’s an 18-year veteran of youth ministry and has spent 26 years of ordained ministry in the Presbyterian Church serving as a pastor, educator, writer, and speaker. He currently resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma with his wife J.J., where he serves as senior associate pastor for pastoral care and spiritual development at the First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa.

This is an amazing book. I'm going to teach a confirmation class ...

This is an amazing book. I'm going to teach a confirmation class next year and this has so many worksheets (2 on confirmation, one of God's Attributes, one on Whom Do You Follow, one on the Holy Spirit, one on We Are the Body of Christ, one on Communion, one of gifts, one on the bible, one on listening to God Speaking, one on Sanctification, one on Your Life's Purpose, one on Stewardship, and one on Prayer) that I plan to incorporate into my class. I have some of the other books in this series but I really LOVE this one. Great approach.

Not all of us pastors are really cut out for Junior High youth. This product helps a lot with those of us who are junior high challenged but still need to do ministry in that area. They give both direction and focus and are great for doing small group discussion after the teaching.

Kurt Johnston is junior high pastor in Southern California. He's served in middle school ministry since 1988 - longer than most of you have been alive! Kurt and his family live in Orange County where he spends his free time surfing and still avoiding 7th-grade bullies.

Mark Oestreicher (Marko) is a veteran youth worker and former president of Youth Specialties. The author of dozens of books, including Youth Ministry 3.0 and Middle School Ministry, Marko is a sought after speaker, writer and consultant. Marko leads The Youth Cartel, providing a variety of resources, coaching and consultation to youth workers, churches and ministries. Great resource!

My son was required to read through the My Faith series - one book each summer - for his middle school required summer reading. I read them together with him, and we both learned a lot. I hope the lessons from these books stay with him long past middle school. We have all three books and will keep them to refer to again as time goes by. He really identified with the authors, as they accurately portrayed the life and thinking of the typical middle school student.

Terrific for empty nesters!

I really like this book, and I saw the Arps present the essence of it at a live seminar they gave. Many couples surround their whole existence with the kids, and then when the kids are gone they are not connected to each other like the good old days.

This book provides a way to start dating and having fun again while you grow together. You do not fight on the dates, you just follow their lead and address things you may not have talked about for a very long time. It may sound mechanical, but we have seen firsthand how fun this can be. It's refreshing to enjoy each other, talk about your second half of marriage and what is important to you as individuals and as a couple at this stage.

In the last chapter you decide whether or not both of you want to buy and live in an RV for the rest of your lives. Just kidding. Love the book--they do a great job making dating and intimacy easy at any stage of life. Another thumbs up!

Buy it in paperback, not on a Kindle.

I purchased this book on Kindle which was not a very good idea. It was hard to navigate from chapter to date ideas in the back. Also, the version I received on my Kindle Fire was double. Each chapter was repeated in total. I would recommend purchasing this book in paperback so you can write in it.

Not the normal high standard.

My son loved Larry Boy and Veggie Tales. We have many of their books and videos. Normally Big Idea puts out phenominal products. I was pretty disappointed with this book. It did not live up to the high standard that Big Idea usually puts out. Normally they have a graet messagte in the book to teach the kids something in a unique way, this book just seamed to be a bunch of pages that ryhmed.

So-So - A review of the 'Tip, Top Cape Shape' Boardbook

They mention 'glorifying God' in both of the professional reviews above, but you won't find any mention of God in this boardbook. Instead, the focus is on good and bad habits: what Larry-boy is inclined to do (bad habit), and what his wise friend and faithful servant Alfred suggests he do (good habit).

The following provides an example of Alfred chastising Larry:

"Master Larry,
goofing off
does not a hero make.

You're singing songs
playing games,
and eating
chocolate cake"

Other contrasts include: hefting dumb-bells versus playing cow-bells; and going running versus chowing down cake. But never fear, it all works out in the end when our two friends decide to compromise and work together by beginning their exercise regimen with a walking program.

Two Stars. [D+] Cute art. The rhyme makes it a good Read-aloud, although the story is more or less absent. I have to wonder who this board book is targeting. It "IS" a board book for babies and toddlers, after all, and yet it is talking about workouts and diets.

The Usability is Fantastic...

The Middle School Talksheet Curriculum is a fantastic curriculum that allows us to put it straight into the hands of volunteers with little to know training. Very well laid out and easy to understand the principles and points that are being taught. I love how this curriculum gives you all the "meat" that is needed to effectively communicate the message of the Gospel.

Terrible e-book formatting

The kindle version of this book was very badly formatted. A lot of words run together, pretty much a mistake in every other sentance. If you are going to charge this much for an e-book, at least spend the time to format it correctly.

print very, very small

The font size in this Bible is very, very small (perhaps 5 pt). Compared to the letters in a typical 3rd graders school text book, the letters are about 1/3 the size. Otherwise, the quality of cover is very good, the size of the book is good, the Good News Translation is good for middle school students and is a translation and not a simplified paraphrase. I would recommend this for older students, such as high school or junior high school, who want a very compact and good looking, sturdy new testament. I would give this bible 5 stars for older students.

Katy is continuing her education at a mainstream high school in this follow-up to Katy’s New World (2010). This is a true sequel, relying on the prior books for an introduction to characters and the situation that has Katy, an Old Order Mennonite, trying to function in a more worldly milieu. It is not the classes or schoolwork that provides the conflict here, but the vast difference in social and cultural assumptions and the tug of war between Katy’s family and beliefs with the more typical way of teenagers in the modern world. When Katy is selected to represent the sophomore class as the homecoming attendant, the pull of peers, popularity and the longing to participate grow stronger. Katy’s father is marrying Mrs. Graber, a widow, and he, plus the entire Mennonite community, are distracted by these celebratory preparations, leaving Katy to make her decisions on her own. Readers who enjoyed the first two books or who are intrigued by the moral dilemma between personal choice and adhering to a religious code are clearly the intended audience. (Kirkus Reviews)

Katy's Homecoming

Katy's Homecoming by Kim Vogel Sawyer is the third book in the four-part Katy Lambright series, which follows the teen life of Katy as she leaves her Old Order Mennonite community to take part in the "worldly" high school. I've reviewed the first book here and the second book here.

In this book, Katy is becoming more and more torn between the two worlds she is a part of. When Katy is selected to be a part of the homecoming court, her resolution to stay Mennonite wavers as she longs to fit in, even if its just for one night. The glitz and glamor may seem normal to the teens at school, but her beliefs prohibit such things. The fact that her crush, Bryce, might even ask her out to the dance isn't helping much either. Katy must decide whether she wants to attend homecoming and abandon her beliefs or stick with them, even if it means she could be scorned.

The author brings relevant themes from the Katy books. Sure, most of us aren't Mennonites, but as Christians, we are called to be separate from the world. That means doing what's right when it may seem so hard. That is the theme of this book. The characters are still charming and the setting of the Mennonite community really is fascinating.

I found this book a little less interesting than the previous two books, however. Katy's "friends" are a little pushy when it comes to whether Katy holds to her convictions or not. The relationship with Bryce seems a little odd, but it'll be interesting to see what happens in the next book.

Those who understand Amish / Mennonite / Conservative Christian fiction will understand why Katy has the dancing dilemma she faces. I cheered for her as she struggled with her need to fit in since she's viewed as "weird" by both her Mennonite community and her high school peers. And I hoped she would make the right choice.

Those who like Amish / Mennonite books and young adults will enjoy reading KATY'S HOMECOMING. Recommended.

A glimpse into another world

Katy Lambright is a Mennonite girl going to a public high school. As such, she is constantly exposed to ideas and concepts that are totally foreign to her.

Katy's Homecoming, written by Kim Vogel Sawyer, is the third book in the Katy Lambright Series. In this episode, Katy is introduced to the concept of a homecoming dance. She wants to go to the dance for several reasons: It sounds like fun; she's never been to a dance before; she's been chosen to represent her sophomore class; and she's been asked to the dance by Bryce, a boy she has a crush on.

However, dancing is strictly forbidden in her Mennonite order. So, Katy has some tough choices to make, choices that will determine how she responds to the pressures of the modern world.

What I Like: Everything. I especially liked reading about what is must be like to be a part of the Mennonite culture.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

Age Appeal: Young adult.

About the Author

Leslie C. Allen is Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. Formerly he was Lecturer in Hebrew, Aramaic and Judaism at London Bible College. He holds the M.A. degree from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in Classics and Oriental Studies. His Ph.D. is from the University College of London, In Hebrew. Among his publications are The Greek Chronicles Parts 1 and 2 (supplements to Vetus Testamentum) and The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah for The New International Commentary on the Old Testament, as well as the section on Psalms 101-150 in the Word Biblical Commentary and Psalms in the Word Biblical Themes series.

Bruce M. Metzger (1914 – 2007) was a biblical scholar, textual critic, and a longtime professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. Metzger is widely considered one of the most influential New Testament scholars of the 20th century. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2007).

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984).

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah. He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

James W. Watts is a professor and chair of the Department of Religion at Syracuse University. His teaching and research interests include biblical studies, especially the Torah/Pentateuch, ritual theories, rhetorical analysis, and comparative scriptures studies. He is a co-founder of the Iconic Books Project. He had served as the associate Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2011).

Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Lynn Allan Losie is Associate Professor of New Testament at Azusa Pacific University. A generalist in New Testament studies, Dr. Losie teaches courses in the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Pauline Epistles, as well as in the background areas of Greek, early Judaism, and the greater Hellenistic World. He has published articles on the New Testament and had served as the associate New Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2013). Ordained as a Baptist minister, he has also served in pastoral ministry in Southern California and Oregon.

This handbook acquaints readers with philosophy in an introductory and nontechnical way. These materials, first developed for use in classes as a supplement to other formal textbooks, are designed to gain the confidence of students who have no technical level of expertise in the field of philosophy. There is a very useful glossary at the end that will be of help to all readers, listing more than just simple definitions. Often the glossary explanations are like brief essays in themselves. Many significant issues arise in the field, but this book treats three in particular: theistic proofs, evil, and creation. A Handbook for Christian Philosophy offers several contributions that make it unique. First, there is a section on logic that relates the subject of logic to biblical exegesis. Second, the treatment of evil puts special emphasis on the biblical themes that provide practical and theoretical help for people who are experiencing evil and going through suffering. Third, the chapter on creation includes an up-to-date critique of naturalistic evolution and a review of the recurrent Christian principles on this topic. The author provides an excellent worldview evaluation, something that is desperately needed today by all Christians. The chapters include: What is philosophy?; How to study philosophy; Learning to think logically; Recognizing worldviews; Testing worldviews; The existence of God; Creation, the reasonable alternative; and a final chapter on God and evil.

About the Author
L. Russ Bush was the author of Classical Readings in Christian Apologetics. He served at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina, as the Director of the L. Russ Bush Center for Faith and Culture and as Distinguished Professor of Philosophy of Religion.

Handbook of Standard Traditional Christian Philosophy

L. Russ Bush aims to acquaint readers with a broad view of philosophy employing a readable and nontechnical approach.

The author discusses:

- Logic in the Bible
- Faith and reason
- The Kalam argument
- A response to Kant's objection to the traditional proofs

Bush (a Baptist) doesn't assert that there is certain proof for God's existence, merely proposing that arguments furnish "a reasonable basis" for theism and the theistic framework. Hence, I am at odds with the limited extension of the apologetic he offers forasmuch as I affirm and contend for a certain proof for God's existence.

Chapters within this text are:

- What is philosophy?
- How to think logically
- Worldview analysis
- Proofs for God's existence
- The problem of evil
- and adscititious stimulating chapters

The book has a fine glossary that furnishes in-depth definitions for students who lack a philosophical background. Included are a name index, subject index, and scripture index. 338 pages.

This work's conclusion may be alien to a robust and compelling apologetic, but within its pages are manifold edifying truths concerning Christian philosophy.

Review of "A Handbook for Christian Philosophy"

I was very pleased with the book. It is clearly and well written. Dr. Bush treats the important areas regarding a Christian aproach to philosophy. He also raises some interesting questions that seriously challenge whether a naturalist can be confident of his ability to understand reality given the assumptions of a naturalist's world view. This is an excellent and thought provoking book. It is well worth reading in my opinion.
