Review
'...a winning combination of Christian apologetics and Christian doctrine -- a manifesto for looking at the world in a distinctly Christian way....'The Faith' is moved along by stories more than by systematic theology (though there's plenty of the latter in the book as well). Colson and Fickett bring together stories of courage and martyrdom from the annals of Christian history as well as riveting accounts of personal transformation from Colson's Prison Fellowship ministry. The contemporary stories help readers see what the Christian life looks like today. The ancient stories remind us that we are not the first generation of Christians to live this way. The stories aren't just inspirational. They're informative....[T]he book indeed works as both catechesis and as apologetic, a strong defense for traditional faith without sounding overly defensive. 'The Faith' is more a celebration of orthodoxy than a circling of the theological wagons. Its primary message is that Christianity is true, Christianity is good, and Christianity is beneficial for the world. Its primary method is to do so by explaining what Christianity is.' Chuck Colson is one of my favorite authors and reporters. The Faith is a must read for every devout Christian who wants to answer their calling in sharing the "good news" of the gospel. I highly recommend the DVD. Chuck is a warm and inviting presenter of God's Word and helps us to understand what we believe, why we believe it and how to have these conversations in a respectable and knowlegeable way. This is a must have for your library!

Great Revision
By Jimmy R. Reagan
Here is a full-scale revision of Mr. Butler’s 1983 offering to the Word Biblical Commentary series. I can say upfront that this is the best revision by the same author that I have ever seen done in a major commentary series. I own the older volume and this revision has numerous upgrades. So many upgrades, in fact, that it had to grow to two volumes.

Reading the new Author’s Preface you can tell Mr. Butler was surprised that his earlier edition of this commentary was not as well received by conservatives as he expected. While he tried to explain himself at great lengths to prove that he was more conservative than thought, he nevertheless brought this commentary more squarely into the conservative camp by what he wrote this time. I still don’t agree with him on compositional issues, but really appreciate the direction he came.

This second volume covers Joshua 13-14 in 362 pages. Some paragraphs are unchanged, but many have been rewritten or at least tweaked.

There are many other helpful additions including some well done charts that were not present in the first edition. The visual additions really aid comprehending what he is saying. There are massive bibliographies throughout that will delight the scholars too.

All in all, this set is a winner and will be around for years to come.

I received this book free from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.

Remember these words well. It’s only a thin veil that separates them from our world. As time grows near, they will return to make their war upon mankind. They will torment, attack, and cause destruction on this planet. They will never hunger; they will never sleep. They will walk amongst us unseen. Invisible to all but those born to see. And each generation of five that sees shall endure more than the last. But the final generation of Watchers will not only endure, not only watch… …THEY WILL FIGHT.

From Booklist
The first book in the Watchers Chronicles gets off to a confusing start and stays confusing for far too long. In part, that's because author Miller is trying to introduce five 19-year-olds with few memories (other than nightmares) of a horrific past as well as their younger selves who lived through the agony. Even though the time frame continues to move back and forth, once the characters are established, readers can sink into this classic good-versus-evil battle in which Sam, brother Jonah, Jenna, Carly, and J realize they are Watchers, integral role-players in the war between angels, both fallen and guardian. Miller gets points for vivid writing, and incidents like a hellish plane ride and stormy battles might well put readers on the edge of their seats. Characterizations are generally strong, but it is Jenna's 5-year-old son, Mikey, who tugs at the heartstrings. Those who persevere will be caught up and look forward to the next installment. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper

Review
Dawn Miller has stepped up the game for teen dramas and carved a unique niche in the world of supernatural thrillers. Her clever and unique machination between good and evil leads the reader on an exciting journey through darkness, guided by the power of faith and hope. As a film critic who has watched thousands of movies made from books, I cannot wait to see this one!

Simply put...Dawn Miller is a brilliant writer for adults as well as teens. --Holly McClure, LA film critic, producer and media personality for FOX, CNN, MSNBC

Fabulous, keep-the-lights-on reading!!
By Deena Peterson
Would you live your life differently if you knew there was an invisible world around you? If you knew there was more to life than you ever imagined?

These are the questions raised by Dawn Miller's debut novel in The Watchers Chronicles. Imagine if Stephen King sat down with Frank Peretti and the creator of Heroes and they collaborated on a novel.

Yeah, it's that good. And yeah, it will blow your mind. And maybe make you want to keep the lights on!

Five friends from middle school, bonded together through a common experience that none of them can remember. Now they've gone their separate ways, each making choices that affect a lifetime.

And that open doors to things they could never begin to imagine.

Strange happenings: dreams, nightmares, flashbacks....all serving one purpose. To reunite these young people in one location for one feat that only they can achieve.

Problem is, each holds a piece to the ultimate puzzle, with one holding the key.

Dawn Miller is a MASTER at building suspense, foreshadowing and giving you just enough breadcrumbs along the trail of pages to keep you guessing. She is a word crafter of the highest caliber, and I'm eager for more about Jonah, J, Jenna, Carly and Mikey.

I had a hard time remembering that these characters (with the exception of Mikey) were all supposed to be in their late teens. The novel is supposed to be geared toward a young audience, but I found it engaging and captivating.

Portions of the story reminded me of Stephen King's "It"; other parts reminded me of the first season of "Heroes"...and the spiritual overtones of one of Frank Peretti's earlier works left a fragrance that grew sweeter as the novel progressed.

Reading "The Prophecy" was a real treat. I haven't found any information about future volumes, but it would be a tragedy if Dawn didn't write more about these amazing and well-developed characters.

I'm giving this one five out of five bookmarks, with a paintbrush as a charm. Don't miss "The Prophecy", published by Zondervan. It may say teen fiction on the back, but adults will dig into the story and get lost in the mystery.

Thanks to my friends at Zondervan for surprising me with this terrific story!

Very, very good!
By ChibiNeko
I always say that there's basically three types of books that mix religion & fiction. One type is where the book is religious to the point that the story is overwhelmed & overshadowed. Another type where the religion content is so awkwardly placed into the book to the point where the plot development doesn't feel natural. Then there's the type of book where the religious content mixes perfectly with the rest of the story, making for one fine book. Relax readers, this book is solidly in the third category.

Sam doesn't talk to his childhood friends much anymore, but lately he's been experiencing things that remind him of certain mysterious events that happened in his youth- things he can't exactly remember. Somehow knowing that their lives- and souls- depend on it, Sam attempts to gather all of his friends together, including his wayward brother Jonah. With all of them having similar episodes of memory loss & nightmares, they have no way of knowing that they are the legendary Watchers- people who will be instrumental in deciding the outcome of an epic battle between the forces of Heaven & Hell!

The plot for this book sounded great, but I'll admit that I was a little skeptical for multiple reasons. First off, angels have started becoming the new "sparkly Twilight vampires" in YA fiction, so I didn't know if I'd be jumping into a series that would be similar to this. Don't worry- it isn't that type of book. Secondly, I'm used to my religious reads falling into the categories listed above, but I shouldn't have worried- this book was excellently written.

I really enjoyed the slow buildup to the finale of this book, although once or twice I did feel as if the plot could have moved a little bit faster. (Ok, so I was impatient.) I loved that the characters are all flawed, but aren't over the top flawed. I can honestly believe that with everything the kids had gone through, that they might have ended up like the ways they did. (Can't elaborate without doing spoilers.)

My only real gripe is with all of the angel name dropping. It was a bit difficult to keep up with the multitude of names & the different types of angels, so I really wish that there was a glossary or an index in the back of the book. It would have made keeping up with the 5-6 different angel names a bit easier- especially since the angels weren't entirely in play that much until the end of the book. There's a lot of characters in this book & with the main action taking place with the human side, it was a bit distracting to have to keep up with the many exotic angel names, their sides & what they were doing in battle.

Overall though, this is an excellent book & one that I will be recommending to people at work. I may have gotten this book for free, but I can guarantee that I'll be buying the next volume. I want to know where it goes from here. This book had a conclusion (much like others have said), but it does leave it open for the next book in the series.

Kind of Stephen Kingish with a twist!
By Michelle L. Beck
Five friends who have the same dream and forgotten memories have been called to battle the forces of evil. Sam, reeling from a recent family tragedy, has been having the same reoccurring nightmare, and awakens to find strange drawings, that he doesn't remember doing. Calling on his childhood friends, he realizes that they too are having the same nightmares. They are all intrinsically linked and prophesized to be guardians (Watchers). And it would seem that only they can save humanity and stop the fallen angels from reeking havoc on the world. As the group struggles to understand their role in this mission, they have to learn to trust each other. After all, they are in the middle of a war, between good and evil, and they must protect humanity at all cost. And as the truth is revealed, they must have faith, in each other and those forces around them that they can't see.

This book reminded me of a couple of things.....vintage Stephen King, with a little Constantine and another recent movie (I can't remember the name) that I saw about the end of times or near the end of times, with fallen angels and an eventual showdown or struggle between the forces of good and evil. I definitely can see why some argue that it could be marketed like the Left Behind series, but I think it could be more. There was the Stephen Kingish type beginning (friends intrinsically linked through events from their childhood...like "It"), but there is also the religious aspect (like Kings "The Stand). When I selected this book, I knew that there would be heavy overtones of religion and wanted to see how it would play out in a young adult story. It was definitely heavy, and offers a lot of food for thought and discussion, but I think once you sink your teeth in it, it is a decent read. There are issues relating to drug use, teen pregnancy, suicide and criminal behavior, but there is also that overreaching sentiment of hope and faith. And even if the cliff hanger suggests future battles, we all know that good always beats bad. So, I enjoyed "The Prophecy" and would recommend it to those who want a challenging read.

From School Library Journal
Gr 8 Up-"Running lean" is a term used to describe an engine with too much air and not enough fuel. Calvin and Stacey are running lean as they try to give each other support. After the loss of his older brother, Calvin finds solace in his girlfriend, and he grows to depend on her as his family tries to deal with their recent loss. Stacey, while trying to comfort him, begins to exhibit disturbing behaviors and he later learns that she is anorexic. Both teens are delicate and find it difficult to maintain a healthy relationship. Through time and guidance from parents and friends, they find the help they need. Calvin's strong character and supportive family help him be there for Stacey, who needs to overcome her eating disorder. Some readers might grow weary of the uncertain relationship and frequent breakups but those who continue will find a hopeful ending and see the strength that Calvin displays and his unconditional love. Elements of spirituality throughout the book are depicted as a natural part of family life and not forced. The author writes from alternate points of view, allowing readers insight into thoughts and feelings of both Calvin and Stacey. A chaste teen romance, this novel provides positive resolutions to real-life issues.-Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SDα(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journal. From Booklist
In alternating third-person perspectives, debut author Sharples paints a desperate picture of a girl battling anorexia and her deeply concerned boyfriend. Calvin is reeling from the loss of his older brother, a soldier killed in Afghanistan. Now he’s afraid he’s going to lose someone else he loves. Internet articles, faith and prayer, and good old-fashioned powers of persuasion are Calvin’s tools as he tries to “fix” Stacey, like he fixes his motorcycle. Of course, that’s impossible. The adult characters here are frustratingly clueless as Stacey exercises increasing control over what she puts in her mouth and suppresses negative emotions, many of which stem from events in her past. This presents the daily back-and-forth arguments between Calvin and Stacey as their relationship is tested, time and again. There are obviously many, many stories like this one—in YA lit and in real life—but what Sharples does so well is capture the turmoil as seen from a loved one’s perspective. Pair with Adrienne Maria Vrettos’ Skin (2006), a portrait of anorexia told from a brother’s point of view. Grades 8-12. --Ann Kelley

Great book that deals with some heavy issues.
By James A. Nichols
This novel is great as it deals with a lot of heavy issues that are faced these days. It deals with anorexia and also the loss of a loved one due to war. The characters are great and you can easily relate to the issues and struggles they are dealing with. I like how the author switches back and forth between the characters in the story so you get the viewpoint of what the other character is thinking. The story was very emotional and makes you think about some serious questions. A must read for those who are battling issues over your image and what others think of you. I loved the story and the characters.

Running Lean is a MUST read!

Running Lean
Stacey and Calvin are an adorable couple that you can not help but fall in love with.
I really enjoyed that the author gave us the insight of both of the main characters minds, letting us know what each character was thinking and feeling.
Self esteem issues plague more and more young girls everyday with the constant media influence of what the perfect girl must look like in order to be noticed and loved.

Calvin is every girls dream. He loves unconditionally. Despite of his own grief he risks everything to save her life. A true modern day knight in shining armor. He is not perfect, which makes him likable and real.

This is a must read book for teen girls and their mom's to help gain insight on the mindset that one has when suffering from an eating disorder. To have understanding and compassion is the first step in helping someone. I feel this book would give great insight into the mind of one who is suffering.

I also think that there are few guys out there that could learn a lot from the character Calvin on how to treat a young girl even when he can not understand why she does the things she does.

Put this book on your MUST read list! You won't regret it!

It was okay.
By werejumpinbooks
Running Lean, I loved the aspect of teaching us about a real life situation to an eating disorder. Now, I know what to look for as my daughter gets older. Some of the tricks and techniques that Stacey used was very spot on for a lot of people.
My opinion of the book, and the reason why I only gave it three stars was due to the lack of depth. We never understand Calvin's pain, or how his brother died or how Calvin coped with his grief. We never learn anything about Calvin other than he gets jealous, likes motorcycles, and his brother died. That is all.
Running Lean is fully impacted by the whines of Stacey and how everyone starts revolving around her. Sure, something is wrong, but "sorry" was overpowered in the book. The story felt forced to me, and I don't know why Calvin stayed with her. You never get to experience the "love connection" before Calvin and Stacey, and why they love each other... they just seem "there". I do understand when we go through life, us girls (no not all of us) get clingy. We demand attention, we stomp our feet when we don't get our way, but by the time I was Stacey's age I wasn't whining. I knew what life was about, and I had to take it by the horns and do what is right for myself. I never seen Stacey step up to the plate til it was almost too late, and even then it was like she didn't understand the whole picture.
I wish I could get more involved with the book, the cover is awesome, and the summary seemed like it would be well worth it. It was okay.

Relationships Unfiltered: Help for Youth Workers, Volunteers, and Parents on Creating Authentic Relationships, by Andrew Root

For more than 50 years, relational or incarnational ministry has been a major focus in youth ministry. But for too long, those relationships have been used as tools—as a means to an end—where adults try to influence students to accept, know, trust, believe, or participate in something. While our motives may be good, it’s possible that by focusing on these goals, we’re not ministering the whole person. When we choose not to engage in the full life of a student, we run the risk of failing them and our ministry. In this thoughtful and insightful book, Andrew Root challenges us to reconsider our motives and begin to consider simply being with and doing life alongside teenagers with no agenda other than to love them right where they are, by place-sharing. As he shares stories of his (and others’) successes and failures in relational youth ministry, you’ll find practical ideas to help you recreate the role of relationships in your youth ministry. If you’re involved in the lives of teenagers, whether as a youth pastor, volunteer youth worker, church leader, or parent, you’ll want to read this book and work together to discover the value of place-sharing in the lives of teens. You’ll see that it’s time to tear down the old structure of relational youth ministry and start again.

Best of the Best of YM books.
By Casey Mccollum
I have been involved with Youth Ministry for almost 10 years and i have read dozens of YM books. Without a doubt this book rises to the top (along with "Revisiting Relational YM" from which this book comes). In the rubble of YM programming books Root's offering is actually THEOLOGICAL in nature, not simply pragmatic or utilitarian. His claims that relational YM can be problematic and misguided might be off-putting at first to some but if you truly grasp what he is saying it will be a game changer for how you do ministry.

It is time for a more theologically rigorous youth ministry because pizza parties and Play Station won't change the world - or our students lives.

Youth Ministry is about "truthful" Relationships
By Lance Quick
There is a misconception in the congregation and maybe even the youth ministry field centered around relational youth ministry. Root takes it on and does it in a readable concise way. Root centers the book around adult relationships with youth at the most influential time of their lives. It is OK to be human with the youth, in fact preferable to having an agenda for conversion to a way of thinking. Youth need and look for someone to be "real" with them. This includes pointing out an offending behavior in a honest but non demeaning way. In a field driven by numbers and programs, it is refreshing to see ministry and theology center and to the front. Ministry has never been about "club" atmosphere but about helping the "needy" person. Root challenges the professional youth person to get the ministry into the congregation, maintain their own integrity with family and friends, and keep God front and center.

Great book about relationships - not just for folks in youth ministry
By Charles May
This book is outstanding. Root does a wonderful job of bringing the theoretical down to the practical. I used his book during our staff training at my camp (a Lutheran family camp) to illustrate what it means to really be there for someone. I love how he uses Bonhoeffer and Luther's theology of the cross. It really spells out why Christ's crucifixtion and resurrection are models for our relationships.

Until she’s nominated for prom queen as a joke. Unexpectedly hurt, Tyler decides to turn her nomination into a cause and starts a Prom for Everyone campaign that will help make the event affordable. Left me wanting more!
By Tanya Dennis
Nancy Rue's newest teen novel centers on Tyler Bonning, a girl on the fringe who, as a prank from the popular kids, is nominated for prom queen. At first, Tyler is mortified. She's always hated this school and now has even more reason. But when she discovers how important the prom is to her cousin, and how elite the event has become, she decides to use her new status as a platform for social reform. She initiates a "Prom for Everyone" campaign that seeks to level the field, allowing the less-than-wealthy, not-so-popular and even the outcasts on the fringe to attend and enjoy the prom.

It's no surprise when she receives opposition from the "ruling class" (a.k.a. the most popular circles), but it seems this endeavor turns all her relationships topsy. She finds some common ground with her previously alien cousins, a very unlikely friend in the class president, and enemies among those believed to be her closest friends. Even her parents fall on an unpredicted side of this issue.

In the meantime, a strange book abandoned on the bus forces Tyler to think about God and what role He plays in her life. Is it possible that He could be a personal God? One who actually cares about Tyler and what happens in her life?

This book dives into the sticky side of relationships and social heirarchies with drama, action and even a touch of romance.

What I Like: I love everything about this book! It features strong, well-written characters, a multi-faceted plot, a solid faith foundation, a respectful view of adults and Christians ... there is absolutely nothing not to like about it. I especially appreciated the diversity of characters. It is rare to find solid Christian YA novels that feature African Americans as a main character rather than a sidekick. It is even more rare to see edifying, healthy interracial relationships. This book has both. The author left me wanting more of the series.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

Overall Rating: Excellent!

Thought provoking, fascinating and well-written!
By J:-)mi
Subjects: Popularity, Money, Justice, Friendships, Relationships with family
Summary: When an "invisible girl" gets nominated as a prom queen candidate you know something's up. Tyler has no desire whatsoever to be a prom queen. She's part of the Fringe, the group that's just sort of invisible. But when she gets nominated anyway, she realizes she has a chance to fight for justice. Prom shouldn't just be for the rich kids. It shouldn't be a popularity contest. The more she gets into it though, the more she finds herself in the midst of scorn and criticism. Life on the fringe was a whole lot easier than this!
Notes: One interesting aspect to this book was the characters who couldn't figure out why Tyler was so worked up about Prom. Was it really worth all the persecution she was facing? The deeper Tyler got though, the more she realized that the issues she was fighting for were a lot bigger than one night a year. It was the whole issue of whether or not someone has the right to make someone else feel bad about themselves just because they aren't as wealthy as the other person. It's easy to relate to Tyler's dad and his concern that she is pouring her energy into something not worthwhile. It's also easy to relate to Tyler and the other characters who are fighting for overall justice, for school to be a safe or secure place for everyone, not just the rich and popular. It's also about Tyler herself more than anything. As the fourth book in the Real Life series, it focuses on a teenage girl who feels like her life is falling apart and has to turn to something bigger than herself for the strength to make it through the trial.

Spot On!
By Amazon Customer
Limos, Lattes, & My Life on the Fringe by Nancy Rue is the fourth and final book in the Real Life series. Tyler Bonning is used to being on the fringe of the school crowd, she's smart, not popular, and pretty happy with being invisible and ignored by the Ruling Class, the popular people. But when she's suddenly nominated as prom queen as a joke, she decides to make use of her nomination and turn it into a campaign to make the prom for everyone, popular and not. However, her decision causes some friends to become enemies and what she before thought as enemies to become friends, like Patrick, a guy she wouldn't have even shared a conversation with before. With some family tension rising with the integration of her half sister, Sunny, becoming part of the family and mysterious threats to her cause, Tyler soon finds out that brain power alone won't help her. Are the answers in a strange leather book she finds?

The author is quite the master of a perfectly balanced plot. The reader won't be bogged down by details, but there are just enough to be able to picture the scenes with clarity. This balance is hard to find, so I really appreciated it. This whole series is great, and in each one I found something that I related to. I especially loved the last two books because I "got" the characters. Their struggles in the books have been some of my struggles, and I love how Nancy Rue can enter the teen girl's mind and write exactly what the character would think and do if she was a real person. As always, I liked the Real Life book element because it applied Bible stories in an unique way with the girls' situations without being too preachy or not understandable. Unlike some of the other books, I wasn't bogged down with the portions, so although I can't pick a favorite in the series, I can say this is at the top of my list. Excellent series!

Some mentions of plans to bring alcohol to the prom, but the attempts are unsuccessful.

All in all, I rate this book five out of five stars. Highly recommended to teen girls.

Note: Thanks to the publisher for providing me with a free copy of this book for reviewing purposes.

We plot. We plan. We assume things are going to go a certain way. And when they don't, we find ourselves in a new place---a place we haven't been before, a place we never would have imagined on our own. It is the difficult and the unexpected, and maybe even the tragic, that opens us up and frees us to see things in new ways. Many of the most significant moments in our lives come not because it all went right but because it all fell apart. Suffering does that. It hurts, but it also creates. This book is an exploration of the complex relationship between suffering and creativity, driven by the belief that there is art in the agony.

From Publishers Weekly
While Bell's books Velvet Elvis and Sex God received generally strong reviews, this effort to understand the relationship between suffering and creativity feels superficial and overly self-conscious. Few readers will dispute Bell's gentle assertions: that life can be extremely difficult and capricious, that it is often difficult to find God amid suffering, that suffering has a great potential to unify disparate people, and that great bursts of creative energy can arise from pain. Bell explores these issues not by covert biblical exegesis—which was a surprising and welcome highlight of Velvet Elvis—but new-fashioned storytelling. Bell weaves inspiring stories of people who turned their suffering into something transformative, and many of these stories are memorable. They are certainly accessible: Bell draws from fiction, movies, real-life situations and his own life. These anecdotes do not make a book, however, and Bell's spare prose lacks original insights into age-old theodicy questions. Although the design and layout are first-rate, $35 is a lot of money for a 160-page book that is mostly white space. (Aug.)

A different book with different ideas
By Rawim
Before getting this book I was really surprised by many of the comments and reviews I had read about it. It seemed like people were completely surprised by what this book was, what it contained and what it was about. It seemed like people didn't research or read the product description of the book before purchasing it, or that they expected something completely normal from Rob Bell.

For me, this book met my expectations and really presented some ideas that made me think. First, this is not a small little hardback book like Rob's previous works (Velvet Elvis, Sex God, and Jesus Wants to Save Christians). This is a larger hardback, 12 inch by 10 inch; basically the size of a good coffee table book. True to what others have said the book does not contain a ton of writing but rather is full of colored pages and photos/portraits of objects and scenes. The writing is interspersed in the same parsed style of short sentences and fragments that are Rob Bell's style. As far as the book and artwork go they are quite nice and do a good job of helping Rob make his points, but everything is in a matte finish, I feel the book could have benefitted from glossy sheets, but I can only guess that would have raised the price of the book significantly. Oh and no, you can't read through this book in 10 minutes as I have read some people say. If you work your way through this book in ten minutes you miss the point and I recommend you return the book, because you will get nothing more out of it.

As far as content goes, I think Rob came up with the idea of this being an "Art Book" hence the chapter's titles: "The Art of Disruption", "The Art of Honesty", "The Art of the Ache", "The Art of Solidarity", "The Art of Elimination" and "The Art of Failure". And I think by reading those chapter titles you can get an idea of where Rob is taking the reader. And an interesting note the table of contents is at the rear of the book rather than the front, an interesting idea that gets the reader right into the book without any presuppositions.

Overall I found the book to be thought provoking and it made me think about subjects like disruption, ache, and failure in ways I had not before. This book doesn't delve into deep theology, hermeneutics, or psychology but rather it explores what it means to be human and what we all experience. I benefited from reading this book and I pray you may too.

Disappointed at first . . . then I actually sat down with it.
By Suburban Pilgrim
When I first picked up this book I was very disappointed. I thought that Rob Bell had let fame go to his head, that he was trying to be uberhip. It appeared that he had spread a 12-page book over about 150 pages. The format was as simple as a child's picture book. I skimmed through it and thought it was an over-priced waste of paper. So I set the book aside.

Then, a couple days ago, I had an evening with no urgent priorities, so I sat down with the book and started going through it page by page. I found that the fact that Rob spread things out caused me to slow down and take time with the concepts, letting the words evoke thoughts, feelings, and memories from my own life. I began to read it experientially rather than intellectually. Of course my staunch Calvinist friends would immediately decry this approach as a total waste of time, but I found myself immersed in a time of serious reflection before God. As one who almost turned his back on his faith because of the pain of addiction, a brain tumor, cancer, unemployment, injustice, and death in my immediate world, this book touched me. In the book, Rob says that suffering makes us bitter or better. I've spent time on both paths. When I was on the former path I would have merely sneered at this book. Now I rejoice that God brought this reminder of His presence and His character into my life at this point. God can redeem our pain. The description of God in the book is perfectly apropos: "The God who wastes nothing."

Others may or may not find this book to be of value. From my perspective, it's a matter of expectations. It all depends on how you approach it. It is certainly very different from his previous books. The reason I give it four stars is because I believe the appeal of this book is very narrow. I suspect it might have been designed to be a catalyst for a meaningful spiritual experience, hence the unusual pace of delivery. When I approached it with an open, contemplative spirit, I found this this book to be a thoughtful, heartfelt gift from a sensitive writer. If I had insisted on another book with Rob's brand of theology, or even some sort of quasi-missional manifesto, it would have remained a mere overpriced, uberhip piece of crap.

You aren't' the only one Having this Experience
By David Kenney
As any good artist knows, it's also in the negative space that allows the work to sing, and certainly this book carries that song. This is 132 pages of text and stunning visuals [Jay Irwin is brilliant] that dance you through themes of what it means to suffer as humans. Reading it, I thought how it would make a beautiful gift for someone close to you going through difficult times.

Rob Bell's latest book is definitely a new approach for the author/pastor than his past 3 books. This book is more of an art coffee table book, the kind of thing someone might casually start and then realize they have to finish before putting it down. I read my copy aloud as you might read a poem or spoken word piece, and I could certainly imagine that is how the author intended. But it's still surprising that critics might feel that just because it's artistic and more poetic that means it lacks "content" or reads as "pithy." Especially when we live in a world where we say, "less is more."

Someone once said, "Times like these call for deep and meaningful conversation on suffering and faith..." and this book certainly begins that conversation in a way that is authentic and beautiful. As a avid listener to his podcast, I could hear Pastor Bell's voice and his heart for all who suffer and experience hard times - and most certainly in THESE times - we need a book like this.
