Review
"...Kai Carpenter's artwork truly upstages previous, more "comic-booky" efforts. The Annunciation, the Nativity and the childhood of Our Lord come to life in refreshingly un-Christmaslike fashion, full of dramatic close-ups, flesh-toned warmth and luminous gazes. The visuals feel like stained glass without the lead borders, and alternate so effectively between celestial epiphanies and mundane earthiness that some scenes are humbling just to look at. (Ever seen the birth of Christ reflected in an ox's eye?)"G. Shane Morris for Breakpoint.org

"Part translation, part interpretation and all art.  Messiah is amazing!"- Scott Asher, BookGateway.com, Winner of the Booky Award for Best Graphic Novel of 2013

The authors of this book have done a brilliant job of weaving the source material into a seamless whole and presenting it in a visually affecting manner. The first page simple says "Messiah - Volume 1," and I can only hope that there are more volumes to come of this fresh and invigorating presentation of the gospel story.-- Patheos.com

Moving!

Part translation, part interpretation and all art. Messiah is amazing.

The first in a series, this fully illustrated retelling of the life of Christ starts with his birth and young childhood. Dorff and Arey stay close to the Bible manuscripts but reinterpret them to go along with outstanding artwork by Carpenter.

The art is where this really shines. The illustrations are so powerful they are emotionally loving. Visually breathing new life in to the birth of Christ.

I would have prefered a less formal interpretation but that is such a very minor complaint. I recommend it to anyone who loves the Word, loves art and may be looking for something truly different.

A fascinating graphic novel
By DJ
Messiah: Origin is a Graphic Novel/Comic Book chronicling the life of Jesus using selected accounts from the Four Gospels. This is the first time that I have read, or am reviewing a graphic novel. I don’t quite know how to approach this, but all I can say is that I enjoyed this graphic novel by Mark Arey, Kai Carpenter and Matt Dorff.

The novel begins with a prologue based on John 1:1-18, which speaks of God as the self-existent one who was before the Word, which led to the creation of time and matter, and of course, the sending of Christ into the world in human flesh. The novel then goes to the nativity of John the Baptist, the nativity of the Messiah, Mary and Elisabeth, the birth of Jesus, the Birth of Jesus, all the way to the documentation of His genealogy as recorded in Luke.

It’s not a thorough account of Jesus’ life, since it does not include the last days of His life (including His death and resurrection). I figured this since the graphic novel is Volume 1, and there is more to come. The drawings are quite nice. I wouldn’t say that they are top notch drawings. They are bit sketchy and story-boardish for my taste, but still very fascinating and moves the plot along just fine. The use of verses in each frame is also appropriately light to the point where it is easy to follow. This graphic novel is accessible where even children can understand it.

Overall, I would give this work a good recommendation, especially if you like comic books or if you want a great visual tool to teach others the word of God in visual form. It is engaging and entertaining.

Great for young people who won't read the real Bible
By Sarah B.
Graphic novels are a favorite in my house, however finding good, pure and most importantly, godly graphic novels is hard to do. Enter Messiah: Origin which is a graphic novel version of the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John telling the birth of Christ - it isn't just the divinely inspired words but the images that come along side the words to give the reader a visual understanding of the Gospels that tell of the birth of Christ. It is supposed to be directly translated from the Greek, and until I learn Greek I will have to be under the assumption that that is the truth, even though it reads differently than my KJV. The illustrations are rich and vibrant and see to come off the page, bringing the ancient words and the Truth to life - Kai Carpenter did a wonderful job in illustrating it.

My only reservation about this was the word "fetus" used on page 61 saying, "When Elisabeth heard Mary's greeting, the fetus leaped in her womb, and she was filled with the Holy Spirit." Maybe the use of fetus back then was common, since Latin was still a spoken language - but for the modern pro-life Christian, fetus makes it sound like a person is denying the person-hood of the baby within the womb. Regardless, of that I enjoyed this graphic novel and all three of my children have enjoyed it as well, including the non-reading one who enjoys the pictures and can tell what the story is about. While some may take issue with the Bible turned into a graphic novel, I like that it reaches out to youth today who may not be as ready to read a KJV, ESV, or some other translation of the Bible.

In the back are also the genealogy of Christ according to Matthew and Luke - and this way was more easy to understand than reading it grouped together in my Bible. Although my oldest still found it somewhat confusing - however it's interesting to note who was in the lineage of Christ. There is also an indexed list of Scriptural references so if you're wanting to compare a side by side, it's easy to do so. I think this is a great way to get the beginning of the Gospels into the hands of young people today who may think that it's just a `story' with no real value to them today.

**I was given a copy of this book from Booksneeze in exchange for posting my honest opinion, no other compensation was given.

Wish it offered more
By C. Harry
Another reviewer mentioned that this concordance was the equivalent of the Strongs for the NRSV. I bought a used copy for $30+ only to discover that, unlike the Strongs Concordance, it doesn't provide the Hebrew/Greek word, transliteration, or definitions/synonyms. It does not even provide the Strongs number for each word so that you can cross reference them with a Strongs Concordance. This book only gives the references for every time each word appears in the Bible. I had expected more, both from the other reviews and because I own an NIV concordance by Kohlenberger which has all that information. Why include it all in the NIV concordance, but not in the NRSV? I'm pretty disappointed.

Comprehensive and Helpful for NRSV study
By Andrew C. Thompson
Kohlenberger's comprehensive NRSV concordance is a great tool for any preacher or seminary student who works heavily out of the NRSV translation. It weighs a ton, of course, and that combined with the ready availability of Bible software is probably why it fell out of print so quickly. I personally still like to work with books laid out in front of me when I am preparing sermons, Bible study lessons, etc. If you are like that, this tool would be very helpful.

Also, I was able to locate my copy, unused and still in the plastic, online from a college bookstore that was trying to unload old stock a few years ago. And I paid a very reasonable price. I found it using either Amazon's Marketplace or a similar site like Alibris. So don't overpay for the first copy you see. You ought to still be able to find this title at plenty of used bookstores, either online or brick-and-mortar.

One other note: Be wary of Kohlenberger's Concise Concordance to the NRSV, which was published by Oxford in 1993 and is still in print. I bought it first, thinking it might serve my purposes. But it is so concise that it can be more frustrating than helpful. If you really want a bound concordance and expect to use it regularly, I recommend locating and purchasing the unabridged edition.

A Best Buy Concordance.
By Fr. Robert Wheelock
This concordance is complete with a very useful topical index as well. It is truly complete, having every word used in the NRSV in it's listing. Generally, most serious students of the bible would consider the NRSV translation the most readable and precise translation in English today. We use a concordance because we often cannot memorize every single situation in the Bible that we might want to look up and read or use in a paper or talk etc. I have other concordances. What makes me so pleased with this edition is that it has a heavy paper that will not tear easily, it is bound well, lies open on the desk easily, the type is sharp and an acceptable point size and there is good contrast with the paper. The Indices are excellent and include an index to the footnotes even. I will treasure this book and use it regularly. It is especially helpful for me as a Catholic Priest because of the inclusion of the words in the Deuterocanonical books. I am most grateful to have this Concordance of the NRSV and in these days of financial stress it is a marvel to be able to have such a book at an astonishingly reasonable price. I have learned that it is useless to pay so much more when a used copy of books are often in really "like new" condition at a fraction of the new book price. Amazon Marketplace is such a great opportunity to have books many of us could not otherwise have.

Intellectuals Don't Need God and Other Modern Myths, by Alister E. McGrath

Intellectuals Don't Need God is for people who are not convinced by the arguments of classical, rationalistic apologetics, for people who feel that Christianity must have a broader appeal that to reason alone if it is to be persuasive to non-Christians. Alister McGrath shows convincingly that reason is only one of many possible points of contact between the non-Christian and the gospel. In today's world, nonrational concerns -- such as a sense that life lacks focus, an unconscious fear of death, a deep sense of longing for something unknown we don’t have but know we need -- are much more effective points of contact for apologetics. In this book, Dr. McGrath (who is both a theologian and a scientist with a Ph.D. in microbiology) combines the clarity of a brilliant scientific mind with a deep commitment to Christ and to reaching non-Christians. Intellectuals Don't Need God is for anyone who has questions about the validity of Christianity as well as for students, pastors, and lay leaders. Anyone who works with students and young people especially needs to read this book. As McGrath says, "apologetics is not about winning arguments -- it is about bringing people to Christ."

Intellectuals Don't Need God is for anyone who has questions about the validity of Christianity as well as for students, pastors, and lay leaders. Anyone who works with students and young people especially needs to read this book. As McGrath says, 'apologetics is not about winning arguments -- it is about bringing people to Christ.'

Part 1 Creating Openings for Faith Chapter One The Theological Foundations of Effective Apologetics THEOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS Awareness of a sense of emptiness resonates throughout secular culture. One thinks of Boris Becker, the noted tennis player, who came close to taking his own life through being overwhelmed by this sense of hopelessness and emptiness. Even though he was enormously successful, something was missing. I had won Wimbledon twice before, once as the youngest player. I was rich. I had all the material possessions I needed: money, cars, women, everything.... I know that this is a cliche. It's the old song of the movie and pop stars who commit suicide. They have everything, and yet they are so unhappy.... I had no inner peace. I was a puppet on a string. Or one thinks of Jack Higgins, a highly successful thriller writer at the top of his profession, author of best-selling novels such as The Eagle Has Landed. He is reported to have been asked what he now knew that he would like to have known when he was a boy. His reply: 'That when you get to the top, there's nothing there.' Becker and Higgins are excellent witnesses from the world of secular culture to the fact that most people are aware that something is missing from their lives, even if they are not able to put a name to it or may not be able to do anything about it. But the Christian gospel is able to interpret this sense of longing, this feeling of unfulfillment, as an awareness of the absence of God---and thus to prepare the way for its fulfillment. A. Apologetics Is Grounded in the Doctrines of Creation and Redemption Through the grace of God, the creation points to its Creator. Through the generosity of God, we have been left with a latent memory of him, capable of stirring us toward a fuller recollection of him. Although there is a fracture between the ideal and the empirical, between the realms of fallen and redeemed creation, the memory of that connection lives on, along with the intimation of its restoration through redemption. If there is some point of contact already in existence, then apologetics can make use of a God-given starting point in the very nature of the created order itself. The witness to God within his creation, the 'signals of transcendence' (Peter Berger) in human life, can act as a trigger, stimulating people to ask questions about the meaning of life or the reality of God. Those points of contact are meant to be there---and they are meant to be used. A point of contact is a God-given foothold for divine self-revelation. It is a catalyst, not a substitute, for God's self-revelation. It is like the advance guard of an army, preparing the ground for the major force that follows it. It is like the prestrike of a bolt of lightning, in which a conductive path is established from the earth to the sky so that the massive energy of the lightning can discharge itself fully into the waiting earth. God gives himself in the act of revelation; there is, however, a sense in which he has prepared the ground for that giving: not to preempt it, nor to make it unnecessary, but simply to make it more effective when it finally happens. But we must be careful. Points of contact are not in themselves adequate to bring people into the kingdom of God. They are merely starting points. Nor are they adequate in themselves to bring people to a specifically Christian faith. They might well point toward the existence of a creative and benevolent supreme being. The connection with 'the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ' (1 Peter 1:3) remains to be made. The apologist must still show that the Christian gospel is consistent with these points of contact, that it is able to explain them, and more than that it is able to deliver all that they promise, turning hints into reality. Christian apologetics cannot go beyond the boundaries of the biblical insights concerning the revelation of God in his creation, but it must feel able to press on toward those full limits authorized by Scripture. It must do this cautiously, wary of the dangers that lie in the path of an uncritical appeal to creation. Among those dangers, the following may be noted as especially significant. a. There is a limit to what human reason can discern about God by an appeal to nature. Sin brings with it a propensity for distortion, by which God's revelation in creation is easily changed into an idol of our own making. The egocentricity of human sin, grounded in the fallen human will, expresses itself in the fatal wish of fallen humanity to create God in its own image and likeness, rather than to respond obediently to the self-revelation of God. This disobedience is without excuse (Rom. 1:18--2:16). Yet this flagrant abuse of God's revelation in nature does not discredit a cautious and responsible appeal to nature as pointing beyond itself to the one who created it and who will one day recreate it in glory---that is, God himself. There is thus a fracture within creation. Fallen human nature can only reflect on a fallen creation. The fallenness of both the beholder and that which is beheld thus introduces a twofold distortion. This is most emphatically not to say that no knowledge of God may be had. Rather, we must admit that this knowledge is imperfect, broken, confused, and darkened, like a cracked mirror or a misty window. Anything that reveals less than the complete picture potentially presents a distorted picture. A 'natural knowledge of God' is thus a distorted knowledge of God. But as a starting point it has real potential and value. And responsible Christian apologetics makes no claim greater than this: That our perceptions of God from nature can be taken up and transfigured by the Christian revelation, in Christ and through Scripture. b. How can the infinite ever be disclosed through the finite? How can God, who is infinite, reveal himself through or in nature, which is finite? Early Christian writers were fond of comparing our ability to understand God with looking directly into the midday summer sun. The human mind can no more cope with God than the human eye can handle the intense glare and heat of the sun. So how can a finite and weak creature ever comprehend the Creator? The most thorough-going response to this question relates to the 'principle of analogy,' an idea deeply grounded in Scripture and given sophisticated theological development in the writings of such individuals as Thomas Aquinas and John Calvin. The basic idea can be stated as follows. In creating the world, God leaves his trace upon it. Just as an artist might sign a painting to draw attention to the fact that it is his or her creation, so God has left the imprint of his nature upon the created order. This is no historical accident; it is the self-expression of God in his world. And just as the eye can cope with the brilliance of the sun by looking at it through a piece of dark glass, so God wills to make himself known in a manageable way in his creation.

a thoughtful book
By V. Phin
Though faintly dry and reading like a guidebook, McGrath's knowledge of the history of apologetics, coupled with his unique approach, make this short book a good addition to any Christian library.
Possessing both a Ph.D in microbology and theology, Alister McGrath is exactly the sort of person the postmodern apologetic movement needs: someone with an appreciation of science from the inside. Many theologians who write concerning Christianity understand science very little, and their essays betray a hostility that science as a discipline doesn't deserve. In his book, McGrath is able to differentiate between science and scientific rationalism, the philosophy that poses the problems to a Christian worldview.
"Apologetics is not about winning arguments-- it is about winning people," McGrath mentions several times, calling into question the traditional approach (solely through reason) that has dominated apologetics for the past millenium. "Creative apologetics" is what he seeks: the melding of reason and the art of listening, responding, and understanding what brings people to faith. Thus, the first part of the book is about points of contact with the people one wishes to help; the third is about putting apologetics into action.
In-between is the meat of the book: sections on other philosophies and religions, and common reasons people are repulsed by Christianity. He seems to spend a great deal more time on Marxism than is necessary for today; however, given that this book was published in 1992, that is understandable. An updated version with an expanded section on paganism would be excellent.
There were three discussions that particularly caught my attention and made me think: firstly, McGrath (who happens to be a member of the Church of England, for those who want to know the denomination) notes that since God made man in his own image, man is capable of knowing God exists. I never thought of that, though it strikes me as an old idea. The obvious difference between the likes of the Lord of Heaven and mankind is incredible. But I can see how such a view as to remember we are in His image would both give us hope and boost our confidence that the world is knowable and reasonable, as God is. Perhaps such a view helped perpetuate scientific inquiry in the minds of certain famous monks we all know.
Secondly, the idea of the fallen world affecting the Church came into discussion. McGrath mentioned his belief that it is only through God's grace that His message comes through the tainted institution of the Church. It is hard to take that kind of idea for those of us who grew up with the Church being venerated! But if one considers history, the Church has definitely shown itself to be a fallen institution. Everything on this earth is tainted with the shadow-- God's grace does indeed abide and assist. Such an emphasis on goodness and light has been in vogue recently, that one forgets the vile world we live in.
The third idea that caught on my mind was that of sin: sin in Christians, what sin really is, and the differentiation of acts of sin from a sinful nature. We seldom hear fire and brimstone sermons any longer-- it was never very good for winning converts. But I think we're missing something from the de-emphasis on sin. People forget what it is, and that it is real, and because of it, we NEED the forgiveness of God! We are all born in a sinful, fallen state. Sin itself is not a moral thing, as McGrath says: "How can we talk of infants being immoral?" Sin is the state of man in the fallen world: the gap that seperates us from God. Acts of sin are what people think of when they hear the word, 'sin'. These are products of our fallen state, but a person could live a holy life and still be seperated from God by his sinful nature alone, which is with us all from our birth.
That definition of sin really helped clarify to me how the spiritual world works. It also helps answer that perennial question: Why do Christians still sin? Christianity isn't a perfection movement. The Church is, to borrow McGrath's excellent metaphor, a hospital, where those with an illness come to be cured by the Great Physician. We may be taking medicine, and sticking with the diet perscribed by the Doctor, but we are not well yet.
All in all, the best compliment I can give is that this book made me think. Regardless of writing style or other content, that alone should recommend the small volume to you.

Good Introduction to Apologetics
By Steve Jackson
Alister McGrath is a moderately conservative theologian in the Church of England who has written numerous introductory and advances works. [p. 67.] In this book - based on lectures - McGrath provides a concise discussion of Christian apologetics. This book is neither a history of apologetics nor a comprehensive discussion of various apologetic approaches. Rather, he sets forth arguments in favor of Christianity and against secular ideologies. He doesn't follow any specific method of apologetics, but relies on the strength of different approaches. As he states, "But apologetics is not concerned with this single conclusion. It is concerned with the accumulation of pointers . . . which eventually build up to give a credible, persuasive, and attractive case for God." [p. 41.] So while evidentialism has a role in defeating the most common objections against Christianity - such as that Jesus never lived - it cannot provide all the necessary reasons for faith. [p. 54.] In fact, McGrath maintains (perhaps controversially) that Aquinas's famous "proofs" for the existence of God were never meant as proofs, but rather arguments to show the rationality of belief in God for people who already believe. [p. 35.]
McGrath also has a good discussion of such matters as Darwinism, Marxism, and religious pluralism. Also, his discussion of Calvin is quite interesting. Calvin didn't deny that there was a "point of contact" between Christians and non-Christians. [pp. 212-16.]

Contend for the Faith without being contentious
By rodboomboom
Here McGrath provides the churh with a resource for entering the arena of idea exchange without coming off as elitist or contentious.
This is not an academic approach, i.e. with all the arguments displayed and chronicled and sorted, but rather a practical, useful tool for even the layperson who wants to dialogue with the various other worldviews.
I've used this book with Adult Bible Studies with great success. Many springboarded from this into more profound and exhaustive apologetics study with the likes of Craig, Geisler, etc.

When two worlds are pulling you which do you choose?

BLACK, WHITE, OTHER
In Search of Nina Armstrong
By Joan Steinau Lester

Fifteen year old Nina Armstrong's world is all topsy turvy. Her parents are no longer together. She lives with her mother who's white and her brother Jimi lives with their father who's black. Suddenly Nina's friends are trying to make her choose who she'll be friends with. Will she choose black or will she choose white? Who will she identify with? Or will she do as Saundra told her and embrace her otherness and live with everyone?

As Nina discovers her great-great grandmother Sarah Armstrong, through her father's research, will she discover herself as well? At 15 Sarah, whose own family was shattered by slavery, makes an escape to freedom, will she help Nina break the bonds of fear.

Black, White, Other is an engaging read that would be beneficial to most teens. As Nina learns the truth about herself she takes readers on a journey of self-discovery. Are you only the skin you are born in? Or is your true self hidden beneath waiting from you to discover it?

At the end of Black, White, Other there are discussion questions, a follow-up actions section, a glossary of terms, and a list of sources. As Nina's mother said race is ''not real'' we are all one race, the human race!

A story for all ages
By Debra M. FitzGerald
I was completely absorbed by this story of two young girls struggling to find their way. Joan Lester not only captures the voice, fears and longings of a 15-year-old but also gives Nina's story a universal quality. Who of us has not felt a sense of otherness, a desire to belong, a fear of not being loved. The parallel story of Sarah Armstrong is wonderfully and intensely told. Having just finished two works on the Civil War, I thought that I had a good foundation for understanding the complexities of our country in the 1860s. But nothing I've read about this time was as personal as Sarah's story -- a young girl's remarkable quest for freedom. The book is a gift for my 15-year-old niece but I highly recommend it for all ages. My 91-year-old father has just started reading it. I was not surprised at all to hear him say after finishing the opening chapter, "How amazing that the author has gotten into the mind of a 15-year-old." All I could say was, "Wait till you get to Sarah's story."

Missed the Mark
By Reena Jacobs
I had a rocky start with Black, White, Other. This book threw me right into the middle of a packing scene, followed by Nina (15 years old) rushing out the door to catch a bus to see her dad. And I'm thinking: her mom isn't going to see her off? Of course, I'm thinking she's catching a Greyhound bus. Well, at least until she missed the bus only to catch another one shortly. It also took me awhile to figure out where she lived, other than Canyon Valley that is. But what state? A few clues thrown here and there and I realized she was in the San Francisco Bay area. Overall, I think the setting could have been presented better.

Hmm. I would absolutely love to read what a teen has to say about this work, as I found the style to be heavy on the narrative. The style works in other genres, but I'm not quite sure it works for the YA crowd. Of course, my YA years are far in the past, so who knows? Maybe the teens are big into narrative styles these days.

So the actual story. Black, White, Other actually had a two for one deal going. We had Nina's story, then within we had the story of Sarah Armstrong which was written by Nina's father. I know this is weird, but Sarah's story has a descriptive flare which Nina's lacked. It was as if two different people wrote the book. I have to say, Sarah's story intrigued me in ways Nina's didn't. Each chapter of Sarah's story had a cause and effect which built toward a greater event.

Nina's story, on the other hand, reminded me of a collection of vignettes. I wasn't quite sure what the major plot in her story was until I neared the end and she started to make some really horrible choices. Once she started to screw up her life, her self-created problems presented opportunities to solve.

My overall impression was this wanted to be a historical fiction (Sarah's story) while also wanting to appeal to the young adult crowd (Nina's story). Truthfully, I think the book missed the mark. Sarah's story had the potential to be so much more, but sandwiched between Nina's it didn't offer nearly enough time to explore her situation. Nina's story, well... she spent so much time acting out, I had a hard time sympathizing and connecting with her character. And as I mentioned above, it was lacking in the area of plot.

If I were to rate the two stories separately, I would give Sarah's story a solid 3 and Nina's story a 2. So I guess, 2.5 stars.

Like I said, I'm really curious about the opinions young folks had on this book.

I received this work from the publisher in exchange for a review.

Great material, lots of options, easy to use
By Chris
I love this curriculum. I've used the Bible with my boys (4 1/2 and 3) for a couple years now, and was so excited when the curriculum came out. I volunteer with 2-3 year old kids at church, and would use some of the activities with them, and shorten it to their needs. It is not a preschool curriculum, but you can definitely make it work with them. There is enough material to teach up to an hour, but is customizable so it would fit any time frame. My church will be using the curriculum in their Sunday school for their kindergarten-2nd grade. I will be using it with my boys. There are lots of different options with the curriculum, from reading the stories to the kids, to having them listen to the audio recording, to playing the little videos for each story for them. Some of the activities are not at the level for my 3 year old, but my 4 1/2 year old can do most of them. I would definitely recommend getting this curriculum!

JSB is great, but curriculum neeeds some work
By susanholman
I love the JSB! It is a wonderful tool to help young children learn about Jesus. I have been looking over the curriculum that I just received. The videos and audio CD's are wonderful and will capture their attention. I have also taken some time to look over the PDF files of the lessons that come on the DVD-ROM. I have found some mistakes and some errors in printables that are to be sent home with the children. It took much longer for me to get the Curriculum Kit than Zondervan had said. I wish they took a little more time to edit more carefully to put out a GREAT curriculum instead of an OK curriculum.

The Real Deal!
By tbryant7
This curriculum has not only transformed the way we view the Bible in our ministry to children at our church, it consistently points us back to Jesus--even via the Old Testament stories. For many years we have wanted something that would show children that God is the God of both the Old and New Testaments and that the entire Bible is one big story pointing us to an amazing Savior...and now we have found it! The writers have done a tremendous job at bringing this Storybook Bible to curriculum form...and I even tried it at home with my own kids and they loved it! They especially loved the story of creation and making the huge poster as a craft project! Thank you to my good friend, Sally Lloyd-Jones and her team for creating something that the children's ministry in many churches are thirsty for!

Just Sayin' and Dare U 2 Open This Book by Carol McAdams Moore
By T R D
Just Sayin' and Dare U 2 Open This Book are two new devotionals by Carol McAdams Moore for tweens/teens. Because these devotionals follow a very similar format, I will review these together, but will highlight the differences between the two books.

Let's start by looking at the basic framework of both Just Sayin' and Dare U 2 Open This Book. Each book has 90 devotions with large, easy to read text. Each devotion is numbered and starts with the words "Seriously? Let Me See That!" followed by a Bible quote. (Most quotes are from the NIV, some are from the NLT.) Some of the verses are followed by encouragement to read more (with reference to a particular Scripture location), and I really appreciate this.

The remainder of the 2 page spread for each devotion is a variety of activities: prompts, fill-in-the-blank, doodle areas, etc. There are also some short prayers included on some of the devotionals (not all). The prompts are varied and are not overwhelming (the spaces for doodles are not huge), so this seems very approachable for kids. The prompts are often reflective ("Think of a time when...", "Ever do ____?", "What do you do when...?", etc.). Some of the prompts seem to be a bit lacking and could have definitely benefited from a more "full" explanation, but in general they are self-explanatory.

These books are meant to be written and doodled in. Some of the prompts (particularly in Just Sayin') call for the use of glue, but these are just normal book pages and I don't feel they would hold up well with liquid glues. I would recommend dry adhesives such as tape and/or stickers.

Each of the devotional page spreads in Just Sayin' and Dare U 2 Open This Book are laid out differently, all in an appealing "doodle" style. The pages are greyscale (no color), but are still visually interesting.

I love the idea of these devotionals - study & worship combined with art. With the rising popularity of Bible journaling, I think these books are a great jumpstart for young ones.

Even though these books are very similar, there are some differences between the two, so let's look at Just Sayin' and Dare U 2 Open This Book individually now:

From the pink cover to the fluffy dog, you can judge this book by the cover - Just Sayin' is definitely aimed at a female audience.

One thing I noticed right off the bat about Just Sayin' is that the verses are often left at just that - verses. Where in other devotionals you would most likely find an explanation of the verses or at least a few thoughts about them, Just Sayin' generally doesn't have that. (This is something my 11 year old daughter noticed right away, too. We both would like to see more.) There are some specific times when an explanation and/or context would be very helpful, and I think the lack thereof really hurts the fantastic possibility of this book. For example: Devotional #4 references Zechariah 13:9, which feels very out of context. The page prompts for this particular devotional (#4) focus on gold, silver, and "bling", but a quick look at the verse context seems to show that this verse is talking about a remnant being refined and tested, not just glitz and glamour.

As you will find with many tween books these days, the language in Just Sayin' often falls victim to the dumbed-down approach to vocabulary. Words (if you can call them that) like "vacay", "prob", "fave", peeps", and "fab" make frequent appearances, as do abbreviations like "U R" (rather than "you are") and "R U" (rather than "are you"). I feel like this approach to tween/teen books isn't giving today's youth (or the information in the book) enough credit. I would have much rather seen whole words and quality vocabulary.

Even with those areas where I wish there had been some improvement, I can see this being my daughter's most effective (or at least one of the most effective) and engaging devotionals. (She has already asked me multiple times when I would be done reviewing it so she can get started on it.)

Although Dare U 2 Open This Book seems to be more geared toward a male audience, I can see this being a fantastic devotional for girls as well (it is not overly "male", where I would say Just Sayin' is definitely a "female" book).

I feel like Dare U 2 Open This Book has more explanations for the verses than I found in Just Sayin'. I still would have liked to see a bit more, though.

I felt like Dare U 2 Open This Book fell victim to the same dumbed-down approach as Just Sayin' as far as the vocabulary is concerned. Dare U 2 Open This Book had terms like "deets", "dude", "jot yur thots", "kicker" (for shoe), etc. Again, I feel like this approach to tween/teen books isn't giving today's youth (or the information in the book) enough credit. I would have much rather seen this book written with whole words and quality vocabulary.

All things considered, I am excited for my son to get started on Dare U 2 Open This Book. I think it will be a fantastic way for him to reflect on his own actions and to think about God.

I think both Just Sayin' and Dare U 2 Open This Book would make great gifts. I think they would be particularly great when given as a kit - including the book, some colored pencils, journaling pens, and maybe even some stickers.

Great DEVO for Boys

My Review:

Just like the authors devotional book for young girls, there is also one she has written for our boys. Written in the same style as the Just Sayin' devo so we have, Dare U 2 Open This Book: 90 Ways to Rock Your Faith. A great devotional to encourage and inspire young boys to be all that God has called them to be. Along with 90 scripture references it has room for activities, doodlings, and just many ways that a young man can express himself in a natural way.

I enjoy reviewing these type of devotionals because it can really help a young person that is struggling as well. They have so many things that they are tempted with on a daily basis and these type of devotionals show them how they can relax in Jesus. My boys enjoyed it because they love the activities. Momma loves it because the current thread throughout the whole book is Jesus. This book retails for $8.99 and is available link.

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the Z Blog Squad.

Fabulous devotional who will engage the boys to learn how to do devotions.
By Isabelle L.
This devotional book is not your regular type of devotional. Primarily geared for boys it is specifically designed to be straight to the point and direct all the while given the boy in your life plenty of room to doodle, write thoughts and so on. The book contains over 90 devotions that will encourage your son – or the boy in your life – to deepen his understanding of the bible, discover how to apply the Scripture in his life and have fun while doing it.

I seriously wish that some devotional books for adults who have a thing for art could have one similar to this. And I am pretty sure that girls would enjoy it too! Nevertheless, this book is simply very artistic and if your son has no incline in drawing well I would suggest that you check out other types of devotional for him. This particular book will get him engage and will encourage his creativity at 110% and more.

Each devotion is spread on a two page concept which will encourage your boy to think and ask him to interact in the book. However, a two page concept might be not enough. Knowing that our boys also read their Bible on a daily basis and learn Scripture with Awana, I think that the devotional book would be more than enough for them. But if you want your child to grow spiritually, I would also incorporate Bible reading on a regular basis.

I would recommend this book for a grades 3-6 boy. It is a great stepping stone to encourage him to do devotions on a regular basis. After the 90 days spent in this book you could easily transition in a devotion that require more reading.
