Surprising Insights from the Unchurched and Proven Ways to Reach Them, by Thom S. Rainer

We’ve read all the hot books on evangelism, we’ve attended scores of seminars―and still we’re not reaching the unchurched. Eighty to ninety percent of churchless Americans will never enter our culturally relevant, seeker-sensitive doors. What are we missing? Maybe we’ve been asking the wrong people. Instead of consulting the unchurched masses, it’s time we heard what the small but important minority who have recently begun attending a church have to say. What made the difference for them? What critical factors helped spark their faith in Jesus and drew them into the community of believers? Thom Rainer shares results and conclusions of this groundbreaking survey of the formerly unchurched. At last, here are proven insights into what evangelistically effective churches are doing right. Filled with charts, graphs, and other visual aids, plus an abundance of true-life accounts, this book explodes myths about the unchurched. You will discover: • Why pastors and doctrinal preaching are critical • The enormous influence of family and relationships • Which things matter more than we thought, and which matter less • The traits of unchurched-reaching leaders • How to become a church for the unchurched

Excellent!
By Holly H
I have now collected half a dozen books on church growth, surveying your congregation, and methods to lead a faith-based organization and this is the best of the lot. Dr. Thom Rainer has done an excellent job of researching people who recently made a decision for Christ and joined a church as adults. Some of the results are surprising.
People who have something missing in their lives are not looking for pop psychology or watered-down messages - they are looking for truth and a community of faith who are friendly to people they have never met before. (We all think we are friendly, but what would someone who is meeting you for the first time think about your congregation?) High expectations of new members, Excellence and quality of worship, and cleanliness of facilities were some other surprises. The surveys at the end of the book are thought-provoking. The leadership survey (for pastors) and Church Health survey (for the congregation) are scored by The Rainer Group. The Unchurched-Reaching Readiness Inventory is self-scoring. All appear well-designed and comprehensive, with good correlation questions.
There is an excellent chapter on characteristics of pastors of churches who reach the unchurched. They aren't good at maintenance tasks (weddings, funerals, hospital visitation) but are excellent at preaching, communication, vision, and leading the congregation. Hmmm... it seems this is what the Apostles did in Acts. They equipped others to do the daily work of the church and did the teaching and evangelizing.
If you want a church that only tends to its own members, you will not like this book. But if you want to know how to reach the unchurched, how to grow your congregation (not by moving members over from other churches), then this is a book full of insights and hard data that can really help stir ideas and action to move Christians toward fulfilling the Great Commission of Matthew 28.

ChurchGrowth Book Bible-oriented Pastors Have Longed For!
By Edward J. Vasicek
Finally something unique in the growing mountain of church growth materials! "Surprising Insights" offers a mixture of both old standard "church growth" concepts and some truly "surprising" insights that will both encourage and challenge pastors of conviction, committed to preaching the Word of God and holding the doctrinal line.

The author, Thom Rainer (and his research team) have taken a truly unique approach to church growth: rather than survey the unchurched, they studied the "formerly unchurched," the success stories of outreach. Why did men and women who rarely attended church decide to get involved? Rainer rightly points out that most unchurched people will never become regular attenders so why study them? Why not reach the reachable?

Rainer pulls out of his bag some treasures old and new. Maybe 60%f of the concepts he highlights, such as "pursuing excellence" in facilities and children's programs, or being "purpose driven" are already part of church growth dogma. But the other 40% offers some eye-opening surprises. This landmark study is not just the same old same old.

Amazingly, the formerly unchurched were drawn to churches with doctrinal conviction (remarkably, folks who transferred from church to church were LESS interested in doctrine or solid teaching than the unchurched). The majority of the formerly unchurched wanted in-depth (expository) Bible teaching, not merely pop-psychology topical sermons. The churches that reached the unchurched were usually intentionally evangelistic. They also seemed specialized in attracting women to church (sometimes through good programs for their children); the women were won to Christ and then often their husbands eventually came to faith (if the church was burdened to reach their husbands). The pastors worked hard at leadership and evangelism, but compensated by dropping the ball in counseling, hospital visitation, servant-like menial tasks, and pastoral care in general.

Every pastor needs to struggle with how much of a price he is willing to pay to lead his church toward growth. But even those of us who are unwilling to reduce our levels of pastoral care can adopt many of the philosophies in this book. I found the book both encouraging and challenging.

Review
The fifth volume in the On the Runway Series continues the saga of Erin and Paige Forrester, two teenagers who have scored their own TV show focused on the dynamic and fast-paced world of fashion. While older sister Paige thrives in the spotlight and exudes confidence, the younger Erin struggles sometimes to reconcile her worldly life with her strong Christian faith. Many of Erin's roles---her role in the show as well as in her relationships with her friends, family and coworkers---become a little more defined in this volume. Talk of clothes, accessories and fashion-world intrigue abounds, but it is overshadowed by more personal dramas, including a coworker's battle with cancer and a clash of morals between Erin and Paige, brought on by Paige's decision to allow her fiance to sleep over at their apartment despite Erin's protests. Carlson's plot intimates that while Erin's strident opposition to premarital sex might not be popular, it is certainly prudent, since negative consequences befall Erin's sexually active best friend as well as her sister Paige. Though Erin may know how she feels about sex, there are definitely some moral gray areas having to do with honesty, loyalty and emotional intimacy that she contends with here. Good, clean, didactic fun for readers who like their LA Candy with a strong Christian flavor. -- Kirkus Reviews

Where's the Bible?
By J:-)mi
ust like the other books in the On The Runway series, much more is taught about fashion than faith. The issues covered are looked at from a moral or logical negative consequences aspect, not spiritual. The big issue in this book is whether or not someone should have sex before marriage. Not once is the Bible considered as a reason for someone having those standards. Rather it is discussed in terms of culture - it's popular, everyone is doing it, therefore Erin's views on it must be wrong. Even Erin's mom gives in and while it is implied that Erin will continue to believe that sex should be saved for marriage, she really isn't shown as having any good reason. There are some discussions about faith and prayer in chapter 6. When Erin feels upset she prays and is reminded of God's faithfulness to her. Then in chapters 15 and 16, another character challenges Erin to look at others through God's eyes and reminds her of the power of prayer.
~ CTF Devourer

1 Corinthians 6:18 - Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.

Paige and Erin are back for the fifth installment of the On the Runway series and things are just as crazy as before. Paige's engagement to Dylan Marceau shocked the fashion world and Runway fans. Even though Paige seems to be happy, Erin can't but wonder if the engagement is true love or just a desire for attention and publicity. As Paige's love life takes off, Erin starts to feel pressure from Blake to become more than friends. But she doesn't know if she's ready.

Amidst all this, they still have their TV show and all the drama that comes with it. As they prepare for a trip to the Bahamas they realize that paradise isn't all its cracked up to be storms of different calibers and types. Will they be able to do the right thing in a business that encourages the worst? Or will they crack and put aside their virtue for fame?
------------------------------

As I've mentioned before, Melody Carlson is by far one of my favorite, if not my favorite young adult author. She has a knack for expressing just how teens feel and act. This book is no different. She perfectly expresses how a Christian teen would feel in the spotlight trying to hold on to her values. It's amazing how accurate her books are.

Another thing this author is great at is making her characters realistic. She makes the characters' struggles understandable and believable. They make mistakes, they learn, the struggle. It makes her characters that much more likable. The character development isn't a massive part of the story, just because character development was pretty much already established in the first four books of the series.

Romance is still under construction in this book, Paige has a fiancé, their mom is married now, but Erin's relationship with Blake is still in question. I can't help but root for that relationship I work out. The author left a question mark on that topic, hopefully it gets worked out in the next book.

One of my favorite parts of this book is the light that the author paints fashion. She basically puts that fashion isn't wrong, even for Christians. That it's actually a good way to share your faith and make a difference in the industry. It makes me, and those who read this, rethink any opinions that they have about fashion.

Overall, this the best installment of this series yet. I highly recommend this series for any teen or preteen girl who likes fashion. I give this book a four out of five.

This review is for the fifth book in the 'On The Runway' series, "Glamour" by Melody Carlson.

Melody is a bestselling author as advertised on the front of the book and I can easily see why she is by reading her novels. I love the way this series takes you somewhat inside the fashion world but also has several other stories going on in the same book. You have so many diverse personalities and things happening that you never get bored. I find that I read these books within a day of picking them up. I love that because I'm eager to find out what happens but hate it cause they are ending so quickly!

I like the way that Melody continues to address what could be delicate subject matter with a practical point of view. For instance, Paige has her fiance stay for the week in their apartment and Erin is less than thrilled and lets her sister know it. While her sister views it as okay since they are engaged, Erin has a different set of standards by which she lives her life.

We saw Paige get engaged to Dylan Marceau, the clothing designer in the last book and this one continues with that story. Their engagement has shocked the fashion world and Ben, Paige's previous boyfriend, didn't take it so great either. One has to wonder, however, if Paige and Dylan are in it for the right reasons.

Meanwhile Erin is struggling on where she stands with Blake. Could you have broken up when you aren't really together in the first place? And why is he so standoffish?

I am a fan of the fact that Erin has so much going on for her. She isn't just stuck in boy mode. She has work, helping a friend through something awful, a pregnant best friend etc...

There is a good balance when you put Erin with Paige. Paige is more flighty and irrational and Erin just has a good head on her shoulders. Don't get me wrong I can see where she stumbles and loses herself sometimes but she always picks herself back up and keeps right on going.

*Note* I received this book for free from Zondervan Publishers in exchange for a review about it. I am not required to post a positive review. Any opinions expressed are my own and they are sincere.

Crystal Bowman loves writing books for kids. Her books come in all shapes and sizes and many of them have become best sellers. Whether her stories are written in playful rhythm and rhyme, or short sentences for beginning readers, she tries to make them so enjoyable that kids will want to read them over and over again. "But the most important part," she says, "is to teach children that God loves them and cares about them very much."

You can find Claudine diving the oceans with Technicolor fish, camel riding in the Sahara, trekking in a jungle populated with wild monkeys, or exploring the African savanna in search of huge elephants. Although adventurous, she sometimes gets scared when coming upon a giant spider or other scary beasts. At that time she heads back to the comfort of her studio, where she draws all the wonderful things she saw and dreams of her next visit to faraway lands.

The Mouse is Great!
By Jane Maritz
Hi, it's me, Esmé, reviewing my very own book! I am two AND A HALF now! Though I tell everybody I'm three, cuz it's easier to hold up three fingers than two and a half.

Back to the book... My Happy Pumpkin: God's Love Shining Through Me is written by Crystal Bowman and illustrated by Claudine Gevry. It is a colorful board book in a cool pumpkin/sunflower shape! The book is not too long, and it rhymes, so it is easy to sit through the whole thing. Plus, there is a mouse to look for on ALL the pages! It's targeted for ages 2-5.

Here's what the publisher has to say about the book: "This book shares with young children the delight of picking out and carving your first pumpkin and compares this experience to God choosing us and shaping us to his delight. Just as the candle we put in a pumpkin glows, so does God's light shine in us."

Here's what I have to say about it:

What is the book about? A pumpkin!
What is the daddy doing? Planting seeds!
What is the mouse doing? Throwing a ball! No, he is eating a pumpkin seed that just happens to look like a miniature football.
Wow, look at all the pumpkins that grew! I like THAT one. Why? Because! I like THAT one.
What color are the trees? That one is yellow. That one is orange. That one is ...? Brown. That one is green. Why are they different colors? Because it is fall. Do you like the fall? I like Christmas. And I like fall.
Now the pumpkin is carved! What are the eyes? Circles. What is the nose? A triangle. What is the mouth? Happy!
How do you show God you love him? I don't know... Is it by obeying? I don't know...
What is the little boy doing? He is praying to the mouse. No! He is praying to God! The mouse is just sleeping. No! (and so ensues an argument that I won't detail here...)

Mommy's Notes

As you can see, theology remains a constant topic of debate in our house. That's why I'm glad for Zonderkidz books!

We've chosen not to celebrate Halloween at our house. This isn't the forum for a debate on the topic, so I won't go into reasons. But I will say that it's becoming more challenging now that we have a kid. There is nothing inherently wrong with princess costumes, chocolate, candied apples, pumpkins, and scarecrows. (Well, maybe there is something inherently wrong with chocolate, but once again, we won't debate that here...) So how do you enjoy all the fall season has to offer if you're trying to ignore the biggest holiday of the season?

What I love about this book is the way it steers completely clear of Halloween, while bringing beautiful meaning to the carved pumpkin. Here is a portion of the text:

"My pumpkin is happy and I'm happy too.
For God picked me out, and he made me like new...
...I'll try to be good so that others can see
God's love and God's light, shining through me."

It tells how David is a popular king and still maintains his good relationship with God
By Cathy B
Get to Know King David by Nancy I. Sanders is a children's book written to get the grade school age child to know who King David from the Bible is and to make him more real to the reader. This book takes the young reader from David as a boy shepherding his father's sheep to his Kingdom ruling Israel. It tells how David is a popular king and still maintains his good relationship with God. It tells of how David wasn't perfect and how he dealt with his mistakes and asked for forgiveness. This book is part of a series telling the life of people in the Bible. It has pictures, color maps, a simple dictionary as well as where you can find the story in the Bible. This book adds in parts from other resources most especially from the writings of Flavius Josephus in order to make this book more complete for the young reader. At the end this book connects David with Jesus and shows how David fits into Jesus' family.

I liked this book and can see many uses for it beyond the intended use as a children's book. This book could be used also as a resource for writing children's sermons or Sunday school/Bible school stories. Even as an adult I enjoyed reading this children's book on David. I handed to book to a child who is 9 and in 3rd grade and she could easily read it and also stated that she enjoyed it.

I received this book from Booklookbloggers for this review.

King David: Get to Know Series
By Yeslech
"King David: Get to Know Series" by Nancy I. Sanders is a biography on the life of David. David is one of the best known Bible characters thanks to the story of David and Goliath, but this book also highlights his life-long journey from shepherd boy to great King.

This book contains special features including "Word Bank" sections which tell the definition of words that may be unfamiliar and "Did You Know?" fun facts sections. One interesting fact is that at the time of David and Goliath's battle, the Philistines were the only people who knew how to make weapons out of iron!

This book is visually fascinating as it includes pictures of artifacts, maps, artwork and present day photographs. Archaeological evidence is shown that proves the existence of David. At the end of the book there is a time line of David's life that also shows when events in world history took place.

The book tells David's life story including King Saul's jealousy towards him, his friendship with Jonathan and his time as a fugitive. While it mentions David's sin regarding Bathsheba and her husband, the consequence for this sin is glossed over by saying: "Then he married Bathsheba. They eventually had a son named Solomon." (pg 83). Mention is made of the story of Tamar, Amnon and Absalom, but the conflict is told in such a way that isn't inappropriate for younger readers. Readers who are older and interested in finding out more can look up these stories in the Bible.

I appreciate that the book highlights David's remorse for sin as well as God's graciousness. David was not perfect, yet he has a place in the lineage of Jesus. The book emphasizes the prophecy written by David in Psalm 16:10 about Jesus' death and resurrection -- 1,000 years before Jesus' birth.

Overall, this book is a great addition to any bookshelf. It gives more details than a standard children's book would and is a great read "for kids" as the book cover suggests, but also for anyone who wants a better understanding of the life of King David.

solid biblical and historical information for kids
By Derek's mama
The Get to Know series by Nancy I. Sanders gives young readers a look into the world of various biblical figures. I just finished King David (Zondervan, 2014) and I would recommend it for any elementary student wanting to learn more about one of the most famous people in the Old Testament.

This is the second book I've gotten to review from the series, and I noticed some differences from the book on Mary, primarily because there is so much more information about David found in the Bible. Every part of David's life is covered, from his days as a shepherd, through killing Goliath and his troubles with King Saul, all the way up to his plans for them temple that his son Solomon would eventually build.

Sanders starts out discussing the concept of a myth, explaining that some people have said Bible stories, such as those about David, are as mythical as the story of Hercules. The she shares archeological evidence that proves that David is actually a historical figure. She ends with a discussion of his connection to Christ, who wouldn't be born until almost a thousand years later. Throughout the book there are beautiful full color paintings, maps, and photographs showing artifacts and places that help bring David's world to life. My sons and I loved looking the photograph of the Valley of Elah, the place where David fought Goliath.

This book is a great resource for doing Bible study with our children. Everything in it is based on biblical and/or historical evidence, and it provides a wealth of information in a child-friendly manner. David's life included some incidents that aren't exactly G-rated (his affair with Bathsheba, and the drama with two of his sons surrounding the abuse of a sister), but these were covered in a very tasteful manner that I felt was very appropriate. We have really enjoyed the books in the Get to Know series and look forward to reading more!

Disclosure: I received this book from BookLook Bloggers in exchange for my honest review.

THE SAVING LIFE OF CHRIST THERE IS SOMETHING WHICH MAKES CHRISTIANITY MORE THAN A religion, more than an ethic, and more than the idle dream of the sentimental idealist. It is this something that makes it relevant to each one of us right now as a contemporary experience. It is the fact that Christ Himself is the very life content of the Christian faith. It is He who makes it “tick.” “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it” (1 Thess. 5:24). The One who calls you is the One who does that to which He calls you. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13). He is Himself the very dynamic of all His demands. Christ did not die simply that you might be saved from a bad conscience or even to remove the stain of past failure, but to “clear the decks” for divine action. You have been told that Christ died to save you. This is gloriously true in a very limited, though vital sense. In Romans 5:10 we read, “If, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.” The Lord Jesus Christ therefore ministers to you in two distinct ways—He reconciles you to God by His death, and He saves you by His life. I would like to examine with you what this implies. The very first word of the gospel is a word of reconciliation, so that “we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God” (2 Cor. 5:20). This is a call to the sinner to be at peace with God Himself. How is this possible? Only by virtue of the fact that “God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself” (2 Cor. 5:19a). God in righteousness has no option but to find you guilty as a sinner—by nature dead in trespasses and sins— and to pass upon you the sentence of death, the forfeiture of His Holy Spirit, and alienation from the life of God. But more than nineteen hundred years ago, God in Christ stepped out of eternity into time, and there are extended to you today the nail-pierced hands of One who suffered, “the just for the unjust,” to bring you back to God (1 Peter 3:18a). He bore “our sins in his own body on the tree” (1 Peter 2:24a). This is what makes the gospel at once so urgent! Mental assent is not enough—a moral choice is imperative! Christ is God’s last word to man and God’s last word to you, and He demands an answer. Your response to Jesus Christ will determine your con-dition in the sight of God—redeemed or condemned! This, however, is but the beginning of the story, “for if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled [now an accom-plished fact] we shall be saved [as a continuing process] . . . by his life” (Rom. 5:10). The glorious fact of the matter is this— no sooner has God reconciled to Himself the man who has responded to His call, than He reimparts to him, as a forgiven sinner, the presence of the Holy Spirit, and this restoration to him of the Holy Spirit constitutes what the Bible calls regeneration, or new birth. Titus 3:5–6: “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and the renewing of the Holy Ghost; which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour.” On the third morning after His crucifixion, the Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead and appeared to His disciples. He instructed them for some forty days and then ascended to the Father. On the first day of Pentecost He returned, not this time to be with them externally—clothed with that sinless humanity that God had prepared for Him, being conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary—but now to be in them imparting to them His own divine nature, clothing Himself with their humanity, so that they each became “members in particular” of a new, corporate body through which Christ expressed Himself to the world of their day. He spoke with their lips. He worked with their hands. This was the miracle of new birth, and this remains the very heart of the gospel! “Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.” The One who calls you to a life of righteousness is the One who by your consent lives that life of righteousness through you! The One who calls you to minister to the needs of humanity is the One who by your consent ministers to the needs of humanity through you! The One who calls you to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature, is the One who by your consent, goes into all the world and preaches the gospel to every creature through you! This is the divine genius that saves a man from the futility of self-effort. It relieves the Christian of the burden of trying to pull himself up by his own bootstraps! If it were not for this divine provision, the call to Christ would be a source of utter frustration, presenting the sorry spectacle of a sincere idealist, constantly thwarted by his own inadequacy. If you will but trust Christ, not only for the death He died in order to redeem you, but also for the life that He lives and waits to live through you, the very next step you take will be a step taken in the very energy and power of God Himself. You will have begun to live a life which is essentially supernatural, yet still clothed with the common humanity of your physical body, and still worked out in the things that inevitably make up the lot of a man who, though his heart may be with Christ in heaven, still has his two feet firmly planted on the earth.

BOOK REVIEW: THE SAVING LIFE OF CHRIST
By Modern Puritan
Major W. Ian Thomas' book The Saving Life of Christ contains a wealth of insight for living a victorious Christian life. Thomas is right on target with the doctrine of justification, but he is weak in the area of sanctification. He seems to hold a passive view of a Christian's faith as he states, "I sit back in the rest of faith." This is contrary to the teachings of 1 Cor 15.58, Phil 2.12, and Jas 2.14-26. Furthermore, Thomas holds to the concept of a carnal Christian. He states, "If you are a carnal Christian, it means that you have been redeemed by faith ... but you live ... under the subtle influence of a defeated foe, the flesh."p.37. This theory contradicts the teaching of Rom 8.1-9. A Christian does carnal things (1 John 1.8, 10), but the bondage to a carnal way of life has been broken by God's power (1 John 3.9).

Although Thomas gets a lot of mileage out of the false doctrine of the carnal Christian, he offers practical theology relating to the Christian life. Thomas also sites a few well-developed concepts from Biblical characters, including King Saul, Moses, Jacob, and Esau. Although Jacob was a scoundrel, God worked in his life and, in time, transformed him into Israel, the prince of God.These edifying examples make this book well worth reading, but because the other theology noted in the book I can only give it 3 stars.

From the Author
In The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren tapped into the deep desire people have to live lives of significance. The book was inspirational in stirring the discontent of the heart. The overwhelming success of the book proved that people are not afraid of spiritual conversations, especially when the topic hits close to home.

In The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life,Os Guinness provided a solid theological and historical foundation for calling and reminded us that God's calling was never intended to have a sacred /secular divide where only certain people were called to do His work and where only parts of life are sacred.

In The Master Plan of Evangelism, Dr. Robert Coleman reminds us that Jesus' mandate for making disciples is the core mission of the church and that disciple making is to be a lifestyle for those who follow Jesus. The book shows us the simplicity of Jesus' method of discipleship.

In Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance, Bob Buford taps into the restless discontent experienced by so many people. The book provides a compelling narrative and vocabulary for people seeking to move from success to significance.

All four of these men have served as mentors and / or friends who've spoken into and shaped the writing of my book More. In spite of my cynicism about writing (I never wanted to be an author), I felt a strong call from God to write this book on calling.  Its not a project I would have chosen on my own to do. The journey of writing took over five years.

Early in the writing process Os Guinness (author of The Call: Finding and Fulfilling the Central Purpose of Your Life) challenged me with the question, "Are you just going to write another self help book?" He noted that so much that is written on calling is simply "self-help" to fuel our self-centerdness and need for personal fulfillment. His question slowed me down and forced a more disciplined approach and research on the topic.

Also early in the process, Bob Buford (author of Halftime: Moving from Success to Significance) challenged me with the idea of living in my sweet spot. As an engineer, the idea of a person having a sweet spot was intriguing. It turns out there are 1,000s of sweet spots in nature. God has designed them everywhere in nature. So why not people? I'm convinced the restless discontent most people experience is a direct consequence of not living in God's sweet spot of their design.

This book More: Find Your Personal Calling and Live Life to the Fullest Measure is intended to help people turn their discontent and questions regarding purpose and significance into meaningful action through a practical framework of calling.

People are hungry for significance. Beyond their desire for career success or family, they want to make a lasting impact for good. An exploration of calling resonates deeply with most people, but most miss the idea that its for them. Instead, they mistakenly believe that calling is for vocational ministry and have never intentionally pursued the fullness of their identity. As a result, most are not living within the uniqueness of their calling. They live continually with a tension, sensing that God has something more for them than what their journey currently offers.

"I want my life to be significant and meaningful. I know there is so much more than accumulating more treasures here on earth." "I know I have a purpose with unique good works and a capacity for so much more." "I need help in moving forward from inspiration to action." "I need more than what the inspirational books and conferences have to offer. I need a practical framework and tools to help me discover and engage my unique personal calling"

My goal in writing More is to help people acknowledge the roots of their discontent and move from inspiration and desire into action. They can live more abundant lives around the uniqueness of how they were made and what they were called to do. More provides a memorable vocabulary and a practical framework that are easy for any person to use in embarking on a journey of discovering their unique personal calling and making progress in answering the nagging questions of purpose that we all face. At the heart of this BE-DO-GO framework are the questions: Who am I created to BE? What am I made to DO? Where am I to do it (GO)?

I can't decide if I love, love
By McKenzie Swanson
"More" book review on Hello NeverlandThis is the first book in a long time that has left me totally on the fence. I can't decide if I love, love, love it or find it just more fuel for our broken, self-centered world. I think maybe my feelings include a little of both, but mostly love. Love with a dose of realism (or skepticism, perhaps).

Anyway, enough of my rambling. This book.

More, by Todd Wilson, is about finding your personal calling. (Um, duh, right? That subtitle gives away that much.) Wilson sets personal calling in the context of serving Christ, and he actually breaks it down into two parts: a general calling (applicable to all Christians) and your unique calling (applicable to individuals).

The general calling (which is the first part of the book) is to "be disciples of Christ who make disciples where we are." Wilson breaks that down further into three parts that he refers to as the "be, do, and go" of calling. He does the same thing for his discussion of unique calling (which is the second part of the book).

I find the concept here to be intriguing and fairly solid. I would agree with the idea of the general calling (the great commission) for all Christians. And his be, do, go system is a good framework to use for identifying your unique personal calling, so there are some good thoughts there. Overall, I like the book and would recommend it to anyone thinking broadly about what to do with his or her life.

I did, however, have two issues with More.

First, I think the book can be taken to reinforce the idea that we all have to have this one grand calling on our lives, a specific purpose that makes us special and successful. That's true for some people, but I would say it's not true for most of us. We all have a calling in the sense that we have a vocation, but that doesn't mean we're all destined to be successful indie artists or start-up entrepreneurs. The world seems to place high value on those individuals at the moment--it's totally trendy to own your own business, write your own book, and sell yourself to the world. But many of us--most of us--are just meant to live our lives (our simple, normal lives) well and love God and others in the middle of our commonplace routines. That's our unique calling. And there's nothing wrong with that--actually, that's where true beauty is cultivated. But the world is telling us differently these days (let's be real, it's probably been telling us differently for all of history), and the message of More does more to reinforce that than to combat it. It's not that I think this is a fatal flaw, but I would recommend taking it with a grain of salt. Just remember that a unique calling might not seem all that unique on the surface. It's your own being that makes it so, because no one can do what you do quite the way you do it.

Second, there's a passage where Wilson talks about God using the church in different ways throughout time. He cites a business guy, Peter Drucker, who says that businesses are generally successful for about thirty years before they cease to survive or descend into stagnation. He then applies this idea to the church. The flaw in this part of the message is perhaps more subtle, so I'll just include the complete quote for you:

"The church is not immune from the organizational life cycle that Drucker describes. For over 2,000 years, local churches have perpetuated the movement of Christianity in thirty-year cycles. Consider the fact that not a single first-century church is still in existence, and yet every church today can trace its roots to a first-century church. This isn't a bad thing! Each generation of believers works with God uniquely to fulfill God's purposes in their time and place."

No, no physical church (ie, a church building or the specific individuals) from the first century has survived. Sure, OK. But the Catholic church is the same organization it was 2,000 years ago. And perhaps all the other churches can trace their roots back that far, but only through the Catholic church, from which they separated in their initial formation. So I take issue with that statement. But there's something that goes deeper than this. Many of those churches that have splintered and separated have some significant doctrinal contradictions. Wilson may not be saying that God is the author of those differences--he can't be, because God can't contradict himself--but he does seem to be saying that they're irrelevant. I disagree. I think truth is truth, no matter what time period we're in. And Christianity needs truth, not marketability.

This isn't to say that any church aside from the Catholic church is wrong or that anyone who isn't Catholic isn't going to make it to heaven. Not at all. I just don't think Wilson should gloss over the differences the way he does. It's not that simple.

Aside from those issues, the book is generally pretty good. For those struggling with calling and purpose, it'd be a good resource--in conjunction with much prayer and scripture reading, of course.

Taking the Cross to Youth Ministry (A Theological Journey Through Youth Ministry), by Andrew Root

Think about sin and the cross—the way that salvation changes who we are and how God sees us. It’s a central part of our faith, and yet it’s one of the most confusing and difficult things to teach. Especially to a room full of teenagers.

In Taking the Cross to Youth Ministry, Andrew Root invites you along on a journey with Nadia—a fictional youth worker who is wrestling with how to present the cross to her own students in a meaningful way. Using Nadia’s narrative, along with his own insights, Root helps you reimagine how the cross, sin, and salvation can be taught to students in a way that leads them to embrace a lifestyle that chases after Jesus, rather than creating teenagers who just try to “be good.”

Taking the Cross to Youth Ministry by Andrew Root
By Joseph T. Cochran
Andrew Root has undertaken the arduous task of writing a four-volume theology for youth ministry. Youth workers everywhere will benefit from Root's meticulous study by reading these four works and journeying with Root and his fictional narrative of a young female youth worker, Nadia.

After recently finishing the journey, I can attest to the towering value of this series. Because of the structure and style of this series, the reader receives more than just a canned collection of doctrine. Andrew Root's interchange between Nadia's wrestling with thinking and then applying theology to youth ministry and Root's own commentary on youth ministry sharpens the mind and forces youth workers to wrestle with the tensions and paradigms Root introduces.

Root undergoes the process of distilling theology by first walking youth workers through the concept of thinking theologically in volume one, Taking Theology to Youth Ministry. He proceeds to write on the significance of the cross in volume two, Taking the Cross to Youth Ministry. His third volume tackles the difficult discussion of how to approach the scriptures in Unpacking Scripture in Youth Ministry. The fourth volume then explores missions and eschatology in Unlocking Mission and Eschatology in Youth Ministry.

For the purpose of this review, a brief examination of the series strengths and weaknesses will be addressed, interlaced with observations and examples from each of volumes two through four. An in depth review of volume one has already been written here. Overall, I found this series to be a very rewarding read. Though I do not agree with everything the author says about theology and his philosophy of youth ministry, this work has been a primer for me to sort out my view of applying theology to youth ministry.

Strengths of the Series:

First of all, up to this point no scholar has tackled an undertaken such as Root's. This series is unique, which makes it of great worth. Furthermore, the series is very entertaining. Youth workers will easily relate to the main character, Nadia, and her love/hate relationship with theology. The entertaining storyline also assists youth workers to connect the practical implications of the theological matters Root address. Of extreme merit are the thoughtful footnotes that Root includes in order to validate his theological propositions. This helps the reader grow interest and exposure to some of the key works of theology today.

The structure of the series is very precise. Each volume takes the reader through the same path. Each chapter has the same structure. Every chapter has an inclusio of the "chronicle of Nadia" narrative. Then Root provides commentary sandwiched between the drama. Each volume poses the problem or obstacle that Nadia encounters regarding a significant area of theology. Each problem or obstacle raises a matter of concern regarding the present state of how youth ministry or church operates today. Then Root brings the reader back to a paradigmatic body of scripture that corrects the concern. In volume two Root looks at the book of 1 Corinthians when discussing the Cross. In volume three he relies on the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch. The resurrection of Lazarus is the text of choice for volume four. Then, Root demonstrates the philosophical shift that must take place for a youth worker to rightly apply this aspect of theology to his or her ministry. Finally, Root displays the fruits reaped from the rightly applied shift. Overall, this structure is very helpful, especially as one progresses through the series.

Root also has a bent to a particular flavor of theology. If anyone has spent some amount of time in Barth's dogmatics, one would immediately see the parallels. Root has a keen fondness for men that fall in line with the German school of theology and its progeny. For many, this will be exposure to new studies.

Another strength of this series is roots overall grasp on the challenges that youth workers face. His anecdotes and quips about youth ministry demonstrate how well he understands where the rubber of theology meets the road of practice in the church.

A strength that should certainly be included is how this series appeals to a post-modern audience. Root's argument for thinking theologically really brings the program of God to humanity in a way that people will connect.

People today want to be a part of something. They want to join with the action of God. Reading scripture is part of the process of participating in God's action. According to Root, "Reading the Bible should direct us not into the world behind the text, but into our world where God acts (Unpacking Scripture in Youth Ministry, 102)." He adds, "This then, is what closes the circle; this is how our Scripture reading becomes participation in God's action...Reading the Bible is an act of discerning how God is moving now (Unpacking Scripture in Youth Ministry, 104)."

People today have taken off the rose-colored lenses and both know and experience the realities of suffering. They see how they teeter on the edge between nothingness and possibility. They need God to enter into their world and share in suffering. Root says, "But those who are willing to suffer, those who allow themselves to be weak, find themselves in position to see something wonderful that the proud and powerful cannot see: that God acts, that God is breaking in. The cross has ushered in an altogether new reality, where from suffering comes joy, from pain comes new community (Taking the Cross to Youth Ministry, 32)."

People today are looking for something that gives them hope. The resurrection of Christ and His future restoration brings us that hope. Root writes, "Hope trusts in the promises of God. Hope seeks the action of God that brings forth a new reality (Unlocking Mission and Eschatology in Youth Ministry, 64)." Later he says, "When Jesus calls himself "the resurrection," he is speaking eschatologically; the resurrection is an eschatalogical reality that breaks into the now (Unlocking Mission and Eschatology in Youth Ministry, 74)."

Weaknesses of the Series:

Everyone has rants or soap boxes that they love to address, and Andrew Root is no exception to the rule. Each volume has a rant about something common and truly frustrating in youth ministry. Volume two rants about sticking the cross on everything and turning it into a consumeristic symbol. Volume three rants about the little old lady that thinks the solution for kids to stop being knuckleheads is to teach them to memorize scripture and have knowledge about the bible. Volume four rants about the tourist mentality of short-term missions. I agree that these are typical issues that a youth worker will face and have to work through. I just don't know if I entirely agree with the model or method that the narrative followed to address these issues. I'm not saying that Nadia should have been an idealized character. I like how she is well-rounded. However, I think it would have been helpful to present her as a foil to someone else who knew how to better approach these scenarios. Perhaps, there could have been a different tone used to address these issues, also.

Root also appears to create a few false dichotomies. One example is in volume three. Root develops three false dichotomies between what the bible is and is not. He claims that the bible is not a divine reference book, a history book, or a book of principles. I agree that we should not minimalize the scriptures to merely be a divine reference book, history book, or book of principles. However, 2 Timothy 3.16 refers to the scripture as being, "...pr0fitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." There is a sense where we should turn to it for truth and refer to it as being the source of truth. The scriptures also record history and many of the books of the bible are some of our preeminent examples of historiography. Furthermore, the scripture is a book that teaches principles of skillful living, and the book of Proverbs spends 31 chapters developing and imparting those principles. I think Root overstates his case by putting these three ideas contrary to the how scripture is "a witness...a sign that points to the action of God (Unpacking Scripture in Youth Ministry, 77)."

I think another weakness of this series is how much Root leans on secondary resources to validate his theology. I appreciate how he leaned heavily on critical biblical texts for the development of his argument. However, I think readers would have appreciated more of the theology developed off of scripture and less off of Barth, Moltmann, et al. I profoundly appreciate these theologians, but I felt that there was an imbalance of our primary source, the scripture, to other secondary sources. Furthermore, Root's secondary sources were extremely narrow in selection, albeit they were excellent resources. If Root would have liked to cater to the widest possible audience of youth workers and church traditions, he might have done well to select a wider selection for validation.

The final weakness that I would like to address is a critical vacuum of a very important area of theology. In fact, much of the theology developed in this series might be seen purposeless without understanding the real need that people have. Though Root mentions sin from time to time in the series, he never formally addresses the problem of sin. Without properly understanding humanities base problem of rebelling against God, we cannot really understand our great need for Him. I hope that Root might remedy this weakness of the series by possibly releasing a forthcoming book that speak to this effect. He alludes at the very end of volume four that there will be a book that discusses the Holy Spirit. I hope he also writes one that addresses sin.

Conclusion

Once again, I have found this series to be extremely rewarding. I imagine that I will be discussing these works with youth pastor friends as we gather in the near future. If you are a youth worker or considering youth work as a vocation, I encourage you to read through this series. Andrew Root awakens the mind to think critically about how theology applies to youth ministry in this series, A Theological Journey Through Youth Ministry.

I finished his first of this series Taking Theology to Youth Ministry in a day; I did the same with this one. And since I've finished, I can't stop chewing on it and thinking about it.

The cross is not static or a set of principles to present to students. It is active. It is where God IS found, and it is the place we must point to God's presence for young people. The theology that Root presents is vital to youth ministry. If we present the cross as merely a symbol or something to be used when we need it, we are doing youth a disservice. We need to fully understand the implications of the cross in order to present God in meaningful ways to youth people.

I don't want to summarize the book for you here. All I want to say this book is vital to any youth pastor, adult who works with youth, anyone who works with a church, or pastor. Please, please read this book! And buy them for your whole team!
