About the Author

Mike Yaconelli is the author of bestselling books Dangerous Wonder and Messy Spirituality. He was the senior editor for the Wittenburg Door (1971-1996), a satirical religious magazine noted for its irreverent humor, in-depth interviews, and commitment to reforming the evangelical church. He was the cofounder of Youth Specialties, an international organization devoted to equipping youth workers through training and resources. Mike was a prophetic voice in the church-at-large and was a devoted husband and father until his death in 2003.

I purchased the book because I was involved with a process concerning pre and teens. I am very pleased with the language used developing each segment. History is not something youth be come with. History is set forth as a challenge to all ages, the importance is that the youth can drift into a relationship , thus helping them grow in their faith according to their age levels and/or understanding of their faith from the experiences they have had, or from being taught by a facilitator or group learning process. This book is great at teaching the teacher how to share past and present experiences with the youth in a way they begin to take ownership of their own faith journey.

Great guide to the Holy Land

Peter Walker takes the reader on both a historical and modern day tour of the Holy Land. This work is full of helpful maps and pictures of the land in which Jesus traveled, beginning in Bethlehem with the birth of Jesus and from there to Nazareth. There is a key days chart for each location discussed and the important all of the important events that have happened there throughout history. The focus is obviously on the time of Jesus, but each section has a section about today (e.g. Bethlehem Today). The author also give instructions and tips to anyone who is going to be taking a trip to Israel. Other locations that are included at the Jordan River, The Judean Desert, Galilee and its villages, Samaria, Caesarea Philippi, Jericho, Bethany, the Mount of Olives, the Temple, Jerusalem, Golgotha, and Emmaus. If you have read N. T. Wright's book "The Way of the Lord" and enjoyed it, then you will like this book as well. Walker seems to have been inspired, at least somewhat by Wright's work.

If you read one christian book make it this one

If you read one other Christian Book outside of the bible it needs to be this book. This book is excellent!!!!!It is a mix of standard bible commentary, some bible archeology, and a travel book all mixed up in one. The author also uses some references about the bible stories from ancient texts like Josephus and others. The book has a liberal amount of photo graphs of the bible sites as they are today. Reading this book will give you a feeling of actually visiting the Holy Land. (Actually visiting the site is also a must do thing for anyone) Looking at the faith stories from a modern perspective with a little commentary and history mixed gives you a new look. The truth of the gospel will stand out from reading this book like a sore thumb after you hit it with a hammer. Actually looking at the site as it is today makes you see the event as a real thing and not just literature. This book won't convert anyone but if you are a believer you will love the book.

An Outstanding Holy Land Reference

This resource is outstanding because it brings together information from various areas to make the Holy Land understandable, across a range of information, both current and historical. You always have the feeling that you are there! If you study a region, or even a city, there are the important historical dates before, during and after Jesus life time. If you view a region, it is through the integrated perspective of historical and modern maps, current photos and art, and significant biblical quotations and stories to go with the event under consideration. What makes the book so terrific is that while refecting many academic disciplines in the presentation, the text is very readable and understandable. This is one of those books that you think of as a classic. I wish I had access to this resource prior to my first trip to the Holy Land many years ago, however, I think it will be relevant any time to prepare for a trip, or to renew old memories.

Skye Nicholson is a victim of the foster-parent program. At thirteen, she has already been in and out of five foster homes. She is angry, sullen, defensive and defiant of all attempts at authority. Her latest escapade finds her suspended from school and in danger of being sent to juvenile detention-the end of the road.

But Tom and Eileen Chambers, of Keystone Stables, decide they will take a chance on Skye and the judge remands her to their care. This is Skye's last chance yet all she can see is one more foster home. She resentfully settles in to a new routine, determined to take the first opportunity to run away-her answer to everything she can't handle.

Skye quickly realizes that this foster home is a lot different than all the others. She has her own room which she is allowed to decorate to suit herself, but she is expected to perform her share of chores both inside the house and outside, including the stables.

And she has to earn the privilege of learning to ride Champ, the horse she's fallen in love with. When her disobedience grounds her, she finds that she is not able to ride Champ - she can't even go near him for two weeks. And her desire to ride Champ puts her at odds with her own attitude. Along with the love lavished on her by Tom and Eileen, Skye learns of the love of God and that His love is hers, even though she believes she doesn't deserve it. All she has to do is ask. Will she be able to let go of the bitterness and anger she's lived with so long and accept all the love that is so freely given?

THE TROUBLE WITH SKYE is book one in the Keystone Stables series. Marsha Hubler has written with insight showing the mind and feelings of rebellious kids who seem to have fallen through the cracks, shuffled off to one home after another when their foster parents can no longer deal with them. I have no idea how many kids like Skye there are out there, nor do I know if there are enough people like Tom and Eileen around to open their homes and hearts and give the tough love these kids so sorely need. Maybe you have a teen or know of one who is in this same situation. This is good writing. I urge you to find this book. And watch for Book 2: A TRUE TEST FOR SKYE.

WONDERFUL BOOK FOR GIRLS WHO LOVE HORSES

I was horse crazy growing up, and now my daughters are inching that way as well. So it was a joy to discover a series of horse books written by a Christian author. Not only will my kids be whisked away by Hubler's talented storytelling, they'll also learn to grow in their faith.

Two-in-one. Can't beat it!

In the beginning of the book, Skye's situation seems hopeless! I'm not crazy about the foster care system in our country, but I don't know any better solutions. We need more compassionate people like Tom and Eileen Chambers, who take Skye in, love her, and commit to seeing her grow in a relationship with Christ.

It's wonderful to see how Skye warms to her new horse, Champ. She finally has something to live for, and her personality changes drastically as she begins to feel stability and love.

This would be a very useful book for training future foster-care home providers, or for church or youth workers who will come in contact with difficult-to-handle teens. The issues that trouble Skye are never too much for God.

The Trouble With Skye is a juvenile fiction that features Skye Nicholson, a troubled teenager who has found herself eye-to-eye with the juvenile court judge for the last time. Certain of her destiny -- Chesterfield Detention Center, Skye showed only contempt for the judge, the situation, and herself. What she hadn't seen in the equation was another set of foster parents. Instead of the detention center, the delinquent finds herself placed in a Christian treatment center filled with tough love, strict rules, and horses.

At the home of Eileen and Tom Chambers, Skye learns that there are people who love her enough to be tougher than she is. She discovers a God who loves her enough to call her His own. And she uncovers a love within herself she never knew existed.

Top Quality I've Learned to Trust....

Seriously, I LOVE the books you find in the FaithGirlz line! I have a shelf-full of them, and no young girls to share them with, as all of my girls are adults now. But the truth packed in each book, whether fiction or non-fiction, is worth reading at any age.

When I found out my dear favorite author and friend Allia Zobel Nolan was writing a devotional for FaithGirlz, I was totally on board. Then I received a complimentary copy and was floored!

First of all, the concept, highly appealing...I mean, who doesn't say "Whatever" and mean it, right? But Allia builds her book around Philippians 4:8, one of my all-time favorite Scripture passages, and one desperately needed these days. Each section of the devotional is built around 'whatever is pure, noble, etc.', and is packed with great passages and excellent thoughts on the daily Bible reading.

Plus, the language the book is written in speaks to a young girl's heart. It isn't over-the-top, try-to-hard-to-relate-to-me language...rather, an 'I-get-you-and-I-see-your-heart' style of writing. I could hear the words inside my head as if Allia were having a heart-to-heart conversation with me.

And the teaching in each daily devotional? SOUND. WISE. APPLICABLE. In other words, worth investing your time in taking the time to read "Whatever". I love this book!

From Principle to Application - An Excellent Guide for Every Tween Girl!

"Whatever." It's a word that society uses to convey an attitude of indifference, but which is skillfully repurposed in Allia Zobel Nolan's new book. Utilizing the text of Philippians 4:8, Allia successfully challenges tween girls to subject everything in their lives to the "whatever" test: Is it true? Is it noble? Is it right or pure? Is it lovely or admirable? If not, it's safer to stay away.

Covering a wide range of topics including friends, gossip, the internet, service, fashion, bullying, and more - Allia encourages girls to think before they act. After all if, "sin begins first in the mind, with a thought," it should come as no surprise that if we change our thoughts, we also change our lives.

Throughout the volume, Allia provides not only sound Biblical principles for living, but also some excellent exercises to help young girls put these principles into action. From keeping a "worry journal" to help demonstrate the reality that most of what we worry about never actually happens to taking the time to let your parents know that you appreciate them, activities provide tweens with practical ways to live out their faith.

I love the messages in this little book. I had already enjoyed greatly The Story for Little Ones and expected this to be the simple version of that book - something that could perhaps hold the attention of 2s and 3s at church. And though it was to a degree, it was much smaller in size than I was expecting.

About the Author

This story is so thought provoking. Even as an adult reading it. I reconsidered what do I allow my mind to focus on and see. Do I dirty myself with what I watch and read. A wonderful story for the entire family.

Great book for the young & not so yound

I bought this book for my daughter when she was young and she loved it. I still have the recipe card she wrote from the chocolate covered cherries at the back of this book.
The book has such a good message of purity that I decided to give to one of
the teen-age girls in our church with a Lenox china plate with her name indelibly
written on the back. She also loved it and loved the Scripture telling her that Jesus
valued her so much that He paid for her with His life.

Great Book, Great Values!

This book is in an easy to read format. I actually purchased it for the lesson it teaches. My 4 year old was struggling with the word "No". I found this book to show her that sometimes, being told no is not a bad thing. It puts "real" like into a great analogy using a fine china plate. Definitely a must for little girls (and big girls too!)

About the Author
Mark is a former pastor and youth pastor, is president of WINSUN Ministries, a ministry to families, churches, and Christian writers. He is the author of more than 70 books, including the NIrV Book of Devotions. Mark holds a master's of Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. He lives near Kansas City, MO.

Marnie Wooding has written over a dozen books and is pleased to be a Zonderkidz author. She is a screenwriter and story editor for both film and television, and is currently a founding partner in a motion picture development company. She lives with her family in the beautiful coastal foothills of Vancouver, Canada.

Started my son reading!

My son does not like to read but I've been trying out all kinds of books because it's important. When this book arrived he absolutely loved it. It is appealing and it has some interesting things besides just the bible inside. Everyday he wants me to give him a scripture so he can go look it up then he reads the verse out loud. So now he's reading AND learning about God. I couldn't ask for anything more.

Great Bible for Children!

I am a Children's lay pastor. I spent hours looking for Bibles for kids in the 8-16 year-old range. I had my 9-year-old son helping me, and we looked at all sorts of "kid-friendly" Bibles. I wanted something with the complete, undiluted Truth, but with some extras that draw kids into the Bible. My son chose this as one of his top 3, along with "Teh Boys Bible (NIV)" and "KidsBible.com".

This bible s filled with color, sidebars, and other features that make it more enticing. I found myself picking it up and thumbing through it after we bought it, and really liking the information and questions in the sidebars. It also has a devotional plan that takes kids through the Bible and teaches as it goes, encouraging Bible reading. Good stuff.

I find that the extra content draws chldren in and helps them make sense of what happened several centuries before. I don't see it as belittling God's Word, but rather encouraging kids to get more out of it.

Terrific and practical writing

Rather than evangelism as an "event" or "project" this writing is about a nurturing process, meeting co-workers where they are at, understanding where they are at spiritually, and helping them take another step toward God without necessarily realizing they are on a faith walk. That is not to say it is subversive, merely that you are really meeting the individual at their level and assisting God's plan in their life. Work is not just a vehicle for evangelizing, it has high merit in the kingdom. You must produce your very best work for your employer and for God.

Using an agricultural model of sowing, nurturing and harvesting (and discipling), the authors provide very practical advice on how to come along side your co-workers and assist them in their faith journey. And you don't have to be the one that does every step, you do your part as God calls you to do.

Excellent book on living out one's faith in the workplace

What I really liked about this book is that it did a nice job showing that the work doesn't simply exist so we can evangelize, but there is value in the work itself, and during that time at work, we should be salt and light. But it is not salt and light in a subversive manner, as though we work just enough to stay employed to do the real work of sharing the gospel. There is a commitment to doing one's work as worship and an equal commitment to sharing the gospel in a way that is appropriate and winsome.

Another feature that I very much enjoyed about the book is the fact that the book is well grounded in reality. It seems apparent to me that both of these individuals have a solid understanding of a professional work environment, and the approaches they provide could be realistically adapted in any professional context.

I very much like this book and would recommend it to those wanting to think about how they can be ministers of grace in the workplace.

Incredible book, thank you!

This is an incredible book that contextualizes my Christian faith into my daily work. It also helps explain why religion is becoming marginalized in our neo-modern world - while at the same time spirituality, the search for meaning, and evil are all on the rise - making the case for the need for Christianity and evangelism even greater.

This book is also an excellent testimonial on its own that reaffirmed the importance of my faith, especially in the healthcare field in which I work, and the importance of practicing our faith in our every day work - which also takes evangelism one-step-at-a-time, rather than just preaching.

The description of the decline of religion in our society, fomented in large part by the clergy themselves, reminded me of my personal experience as a teenage president of our church teen club, which allowed me a seat on our parish council and exposure to the raw politics of our church. The conclusion of my "uninformed brain" (as the pastor once described me) was that the clergy was more interested in politics, preaching, and profit than in understanding me or my family or our spiritual needs. This was manifest in several, specific, stark incidents that turned me off from that church and church-going in general for a couple decades. Now that I am grown, with kids and a career (and still trying to inform my brain), this book is an especially helpful find for me.
