Getting Students to Show Up: Practical Ideas for Any Outreach Event---from 10 to 10,000, by Jonathan McKee

Whenever I talk with youth workers at big events, I see the same look in their eyes. It’s the look of, “I want to pull off an event like this.” I regularly get phone calls from youth workers around the country saying, “We’ve never done anything like this before, but we wanted to do a big evangelism event . . .” At 80% of the events I speak at each year it seems as if the youth worker in charge expected large numbers, only to get a fourth of his or her expectations. The heart is there and the motives are pure . . . but the experience and know-how are in short supply. Most youth workers would love to pull off successful outreach events, if they only knew how. Youth workers are only learning how to program outreach events by “trial and error.” They need a resource to not only teach them the basics in programming outreach events, but also give them tools and examples that actually work. This book will help them understand the mindset of this outreach crowd, and give them the tools to plan effective outreach programs. The book will show them examples of how NOT to do it, as well as giving them “ready-made” events that work. It will also provide the basics such as the importance of DRAW, and aligning every single element with the events PURPOSE. The target market is all youth workers who want to plan weekly outreach programs, big events, or campus programs. A secondary audience would be student leaders who want to learn how to run 20 minute lunchtime “Bible Clubs,” geared for outreach. Youth workers would be the gatekeepers to this audience, because they are the ones who would purchase the books for their student leaders

This is a good resource for thinking about outreach
By R. J. Monts
If you are looking for a list of outreach ideas, then this book will disappoint you. However if you have little or no experience at planning an outreach event then this book is a great starting resource. The book has practical advice about how to think about outreach events, but is lacking in providing preplanned outreach events. In addition, there is information that most youth leaders will never need to think about, like how to book a band or a speaker.

I am a new youth minister and I found the book to be a good starting point, but I was looking for more outreach ideas. Getting students to show up did illuminate some areas that I had neglected in my planning so it is a good resource, but it is not a list of outreach ideas.

The end of the book does contain some outreach ideas and he points you to a free website ([...]) which he is involved with and which does contain a list of outreach ideas.

Size matters
By Bryan Jaster
This book ultimately affirms that size matters. It draws upon the tired strategies of influence (manipulation!) to get people to "go to church". I'd recommend a book more in tune with a theology of incarnation where real presence matters more than tactics.

By Tim Challies
I admit it: I sometimes grow weary of hearing about all the challenges faced by pastors and pastors' wives and pastors' kids. Is a pastor's vocation really so different from any other? Can it really be such a challenge to the rest of his family? Could it be that pastors are just a little too sensitive about the whole thing?

I haven't been a pastor long enough to speak with a whole lot of authority. But a few years into this life, I can at least vouch that a pastor's family does face a number of unique challenges, challenges that are different from those faced by a small business owner or salaried employee. (I have been both.) Pastoral ministry is a difficult calling not just for a man, but for his whole family.

Brian Croft has a burden for practical matters of pastoral ministry and writes often at practicalshepherding.com. He has teamed up with his wife to Cara to write The Pastor's Family. This is a book that calls a pastor to the task of shepherding his family through the challenges of pastoral ministry.

It took only a few pages for the book to help me grasp something that should be obvious but that had largely escaped me until now. Much of what makes a pastor's challenge unique as he shepherds his family does not come from the church but from his own heart. In the chapter titled simply "The Problem," Croft shows that pastors face internal demands of approval, appearance, success, and much besides. These are expectations the pastor places upon himself and they can soon come to control him and to dominate his decision-making. The demands soon become idols, things that hold out the promise of satisfaction and significance. Soon a man will sacrifice his family and neglect their care in order to pursue satisfaction. "The problem rests not in the demands and pressures we face but in how we create idols out of those demands, idols that lead us to neglect our family and dishonor God."

The solution is to better understand, appreciate and apply the good news of what Christ has accomplished, and to understand that our significance is found in him. "Struggling pastors need to rely on two facets of the biblical gospel is they hope to experience its power: they need to own their sin, acknowledging their neglect and failure, and they need to rely on the grace Christ offers, trusting in the gifts and promises of God rather than in their own efforts to secure what they want and need."

With the foundation laid, the Crofts go on to write several chapters about the pastor's wife and the pastor's family. In most cases Brian writes the chapter with Cara adding comments here and there; in two cases, though, Cara leads the way and leaves Brian to add his comments. It is quite an effective format that accomplishes two things: it adds a woman's perspective and wisdom and it also makes the book more applicable to a pastor's wife. The Crofts strike a good balance between the descriptive and the prescriptive, between what the Bible commands and wise applications of that truth. They open up their church, their home and their family just enough to give us a glimpse of principles in action.

There are a few parts of the book that were especially helpful to me: the section on serving, encouraging and discipling your wife; the section on praying with and for your wife; the practical instructions for individually discipling your children; and the two chapters written by Cara, since they helped me better understand the challenges my wife does face or may soon face.

All throughout the history of the church there have been pastors--and you may well know some of them--who have sacrificed their families on the altar of ministry. Too many neglected wives and forsaken children can testify to men who time and time again chose ministry in place of family. Every pastor can testify to the power of this temptation, which is exactly why there is such an urgent need for The Pastor's Family. This book challenges pastors to care first and best for their wives and children and it carefully draws upon biblical wisdom to allow them to do that very thing. It is a book I intend to read with Aileen and one I heartily recommend to every pastor.

The Joy of Ministry and Family
By Cameron
At this moment, I’m finishing up my third year of full-time pastoral ministry. I remember studying for the ministry, and one of the things my professors ingrained in us repeatedly was that we must guard the calling. Burnout is too prevalent among current ministers. One of the most vulnerable areas of burnout for a pastor is undoubtedly his family. When a family is consistently placed second to the ministry, it has devastating consequences. So, as a new dad myself, I wanted–I needed–to read something on protecting my family.

Brian and Cara Croft have a unique book here. They offer some incredibly practical warnings and advice for the pastor and his family. Throughout each chapter, both Brian and Cara have an opportunity to share from their unique perspectives. This makes portions of the book more directed toward the minister’s wife. A part of me wishes the book was divided into parts for easier readability, but, nonetheless, the presence of both voices was necessary and appreciated. Additionally, each chapter concludes with discussions for the family.

At the same time, I wish the book talked about the joys and benefits of ministry that affect the family. Much of the book takes a somber tone of ministers who inappropriately balanced their home and church. While this is certainly saddening and devastating, there are also ministers who enjoyed the blessings of a family and church balanced. They hit on this fact momentarily throughout the chapters, but I wish more attention was given to this detail. The tone appeared to be more, “Guard your family from the church!” Rather, I wish the tone communicated, “Live in a way so that your family grows to appreciate and love the church!” That really ought to be our aim as ministers.

Nevertheless, this is a valuable book to every minister. I recommend it to the young ministers such as myself. May we heed the warnings within this book and be a generation marked by our healthy stewardship and priorities. It’s also a book for the veterans in ministry as it simply offers more ways we can each connect with our families. If you’re not in ministry, it probably won’t speak to you on the same level. Yet, it will give you a glimpse into the pastor’s life and home–hopefully creating a deeper understanding.

Please note, I was given a free copy of this book by NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion and review.

Good specifics, light on theology and the gospel.
By Matthew Proctor
(we received a free copy of the book for the purposes of review)

Brian and Cara Croft wrote a book together, so it seemed fitting after reading The Pastor’s Family that we should review the work in a similar fashion.

{Matt}: The authors provide a succinct summary of some of the underlying problems (i.e. idolatries) that plague pastor’s families, as well as discussion-inspiring questions to close each chapter. We felt a number of the practical ideas would benefit ministry families already well-grounded in the Gospel. It lacks, however, a deeply theological discussion on motivations and Gospel-centered rationale for solutions. The book reads more as a series of commands, suggestions, and how-to’s. The danger with a book focused on high demands like this is two-fold. Some will walk away overwhelmed, discouraged, unable to measure up. Others will fall prey to legalism, checking the boxes, satisfied with their performance.

{Carrie}: The Pastor’s Family “…is written to call the pastor to the priority of shepherding his family while still faithfully serving the church.” It particularly addresses pastors who neglect their families in favor of work (though it disregards the many pastors who idolize family and are lazy in God’s service). Included are many helpful practical ideas for changing neglectful patterns of behavior. However, the overall practical emphasis of the book leaves the reader wondering how the Gospel really transforms the heart and home, how it really powers the kind of change pastors and their families are seeking.

Clearly, God has done a good work in the lives of the authors who share openly about their own growth through personal shortcomings and struggles. Their honesty is refreshing. In the end, however, we might suggest ministry families turning first to Paul David Tripp’s Dangerous Calling or Jared Wilson’s The Pastor’s Justification.

Pastor Matt and Carrie Proctor have been married and in ministry for almost eleven years. They are humbled and delighted by God’s grace, their four children, and the privilege of ministering together at Cornerstone Church (EFCA) in Marion, Iowa.

Part One The Challenges of Leadership Chapter One The Issues Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together (Psalm 34:3). GOAL: To present the complex questions about roles and the related issue facing women and men in evangelical churches. 'I have to admit that I leave meetings like this feeling frustrated and not really appreciated. I feel put down by a group of men who seem to be patting me on the head and saying, 'We'll take over now.'' Christy was cautiously revealing her annoyance, and I had to admit that I could understand her feelings. She had worked so long to raise the consciousness of members of her church to a particular need. At first, no one seemed to share her burden. Then the issue became a 'hot item' and suddenly everyone was concerned. The male leadership of the church became involved and organized a meeting to decide how to meet the need. Christy was given a few minutes on the agenda, but the men were clearly the 'movers and shakers.' If you asked Christy, she would tell you that she usually has no problems with the traditional biblical interpretation of male headship. But somehow, at times like this when the idea of headship is put into practice, traditional views of headship just do not 'fit' for her. The elders of the church were the only ones in the position to make decisions; yet if you had added up their collective knowledge on this issue, it would not even have begun to approach Christy's expertise. 'This issue is a big one to me,' Christy lamented, 'My heart is in it, and I've been gathering information and working on it for more than a year! They asked me to give them some background on the issue. They also suggested that, since I was concerned about making sure things went smoothly for the meeting, I take charge of the nursery and fellowship time. Then what do they do? The meeting ended with three elders being appointed to do more study.' As we listen to Christy, some important questions come to mind... *Can the traditional evangelical church offer women challenging, significant opportunities to serve? *Is there a place in the local evangelical church for women who have gifts, training, and experience as executives, planners, implementers, etc.? *If so, is it possible to maintain biblical male headship in the church and employ the nontraditional leadership abilities of women? *Is the church an appropriate place for women to develop and exercise leadership skills? *How does the church use the gifts of stay-at-home moms, empty nesters, and great-grandmothers and encourage these women to develop new skills? *How can women in various seasons and circumstances of life experience oneness as they grow and serve Christ together in the church? *What responsibility does the church have to deal creatively with these issues? The Christian woman today is confronted with many perplexing issues. One of these is the question of her role in the church. Determining how she functions in her local church poses both problems and possibilities for the woman who believes that the Bible is the infallible, authoritative Word of God and who holds to the male-headship role in the church. Too often because of confusion over the role of women in the local church, it is problems rather than possibilities that surface. Consequently, the female population remains an important untapped resource in most churches. Many evangelical leaders agree that one of the most important challenges the church faces in the 1990s is to recognize women's gifts and free the women to exercise them. We would add that evangelical women face the challenge to speak boldly and clearly on the role of Christian women in the home and church. We hear that this is the decade of women, but we must not allow the world's voices to set the agenda for the church. We must unashamedly articulate and model the biblical position of male headship on this crucial issue. In order to seize this exciting opportunity, men and women must extend their theological position on the issue to the practice of that position. The position has been stated and restated! Now let's do some creative thinking about putting our beliefs into practice. Men and women who have attached themselves to evangelical churches that do not ordain women to the position of pastor or elder seem to face a confusing dilemma. There is a tension for those who hold the position that the Bible teaches that women are not to be ordained to positions of authority, but who also hold that all believers are to discover and exercise their gifts for the good of the church. Can women obey both of these truths? If so, how do Christian women identify and focus their leadership abilities on tasks and opportunities within the church? How do Christian men in leadership positions recognize the gifts of women and integrate the full range of abilities that today's women have with the tremendous needs in the kingdom of God? We believe that this tension can be resolved and these questions answered without capitulating to those who insist that equal ministry opportunities for women demand ordination for women. The issue is more complicated in today's evangelical church because of the increasing variety of skills that women possess. Christian women whose gifts are being developed in the business world, who function as managers and professionals directing the activities of others in their work lives, wonder how they can achieve this same level of contribution in their church lives. In many churches, the only opportunities for women to be involved in ministry are in the domestic areas. It is not that these women are unwilling to keep the nursery and plan fellowship suppers, nor do they view these tasks as insignificant. However, because of lack of experience in these areas, they feel insecure and inadequate. They long for opportunities to serve in situations where they can utilize their abilities and experiences to make contributions within their congregations. Yet they do not know what is appropriate. They do not want to appear pushy so they do nothing--and that leads to a stifled, frustrated feeling.

Excellent and Challenging
By P. J. Taylor
This is a great book for Women in leadership and their Pastors to read through. It presents a thorough Biblical understanding of Women serving Christ that is freeing and refreshing. Feminists look elsewhere, this book is based on Biblical truth, not worldy advice.

Preaching that Connects, by Mark Galli

Master the craft of effective communication that grabs attention and wins hearts. Like everyone else, preachers long to be understood. Unfortunately, the rules first learned in seminary, if misapplied, can quickly turn homiletic precision into listener boredom. To capture heart and mind, Mark Galli and Craig Larsen suggest preachers turn to the lessons of journalism. In Preaching That Connects, they show how the same keys used to create effective, captivating communication in the media can transform a sermon. Amply illustrated from some of today’s best preachers, Preaching That Connects walks through the entire sermon, from the critical introduction to the bridge to illustrations and final application. Key points include the five techniques for generating creative ideas, your six options for illustrations, and the ten rules for great storytelling—and why the transition sentence is the hardest sentence you’ll write. Preaching That Connects is for all who seek to hone their craft to communicate the truth of the gospel effectively.

Strengths - Weaknesses- Contributions
By Amazon Customer
Strengths

Foremost, this book is practical. The authors write with experience. As former pastors, both involved in Christian journalism, they offer solid advice which captures the imagination Rather than just giving a list of preaching dos and don'ts, this book offers a plethora of suggestions for the preacher. From using good illustrations, telling good stories, and using words with impact, the pages are filled with techniques for the conscientious preacher. Of particular interest and usefulness is the section on pacing, an integral part of storytelling. Too often, a story loses impact if the storyteller uses complication and resolution improperly. Therefore, the authors go into detail explaining how to bring the necessary elements together for good story telling. The pacing section is indicative of all the other sections, each filled with useful examples and techniques.

The section on "Crafting Words That Inspire," is another section providing inspiration. Again, rather than list a number of methods to form words into sentences, the authors have included explanations of several different types of word usage. These paragraphs provide the ingredients of making words come alive, to gain and keep an audience. Wisely, several examples of Jesus' own teachings provide examples for those preacher who might be disagree with using these techniques. Here in this section and through out the book, Galli and Larson not only provide examples of how Jesus taught, but how well respected and successful preachers (listed for reference) use many of the suggestions found within this book.

This book interacts with the critical reader. For instance, as Galli and Larson examine preaching through journalistic lenses, a preacher may be tempted to think, "Why do I have to find ways to gain and keep the congregations attention? After all, those who come to church should be prepared to hear biblical preaching, filled with theological content." The answer is simple. People are not prepared. As Galli and Larson illustrate, on any given week most likely the majority of congregants have spent more time exposed to media than the Word of God. Therefore, the preacher needs to design carefully his message to gain and keep people's attention, because the media has conditioned his listeners. This is the whole purpose of this book.

Preaching That Connects is fast paced. Geared toward keeping the reader's prompt attention, the book is easily finished within several hours. In fact, indicative of good journalism, the authors have designed the book practicing many of the techniques explained within the book's pages. The book is structured to capture attention. The chapters are short and loaded (as previously discussed) with practical information. Titled with large letters on the first page of the chapter, the title is printed on each subsequent upper right hand margin. Additionally, within each chapter the authors write the subtitles labeled accordingly. Certain words are italicized, while words list are often printed in bullet format. All of these techniques make this book enjoyable.
This book stands as an example. It is structured, well organized, and intuitive. The authors, by using a journalistic style in this book, are making a point for preachers. As this book has continuity of thought and structure, so should the preacher's sermons. People enjoy structure and orderliness. Most likely, a congregation would shun a hodgepodge of ideas strung together loosely with Scripture passages passing for a sermon. A sermon should have form of a structure. People should be able to follow along a preacher's sermon.

Additionally, Galli and Larson help readers understand how asking the proper questions bring structure and form to a sermon. Using such a list of questions, a heuristic, allows the preacher to objectively approach a text, to give his sermon meaning and purpose. The preacher's main aim is not to pass knowledge (although doctrine needs teaching). Rather, a preacher ought to present his sermon to move his listeners toward godliness. This means he needs to engage his listener's intellect.
Although there is a myriad of advice given within this book, the authors realize each person is different. Not any one person can use all of these techniques all of the time. The authors used common sense. However, the best advice Galli and Larson offer is encouraging the preacher to use clarity in delivering the message. "Keep it Simple." With all the techniques of rhetoric available, the preacher should not draw attention away from his central message. The congregation should not get lost in the use of the preacher's words. For the Holy Spirit should move people, not the language. Something the authors reiterate in the opening chapter of the book. Yet, throughout the book, the authors provide a good argument for crafting words to gain the attention of hearers; however, they have not lost site for bringing the message with clarity. The purpose of the sermon is for the encouraging of people in their relationship with God. This will always be the main purpose. Galli and Larson have not forgotten this central truth.

Analysis of Weaknesses

There is not much in the form of weaknesses in Preaching That Connects. This is a relevant, practical book about preaching for preachers. Galli and Larson have solidly identified what a media saturated culture needs, preachers who can bring the message of the Bible across in a format culture understands. Media has conditioned society to expect glamour, glitz, and gun smoke all in the span of thirty-second sound bites. Christians are certainly not immune from the constant barrage of this television, radio, and the Internet.

Contributions

The contributions to this book are in the practicality of the author's suggestions. Galli and Larson understand the importance of reaching a generation saturated with media is with the same techniques. Clearly stating preachers should emphasize the Word of God; Preaching That Connects illustrates how pastors may add impact to their messages through the power of words, which may not otherwise capture the imagination and attention listeners.

The best book on sermon prep
By KarimC MS Blogger
I dont understand why many turn to straight hard nose technical preaching books. This book is easy to read, and will have you realizing that the writers block you have is easy to get rid of. This is the best book on crafting your sermons. I have read over 10 books so far from other authors and all of them in a nutshell say the same thing but, this book gets you writing immediately. If you are writing sermons, you must have it.

It can help you connect!
By Mark Lamprecht
Galli and Larson offer journalistic tools for preachers to help them communicate better in their sermons. Both authors have pastoral and journalism experience. Galli is a former pastor and senior managing editor of Christianity Today. Larson is a pastor in Chicago and chief editor for [...].

Before explaining what this book offers it is important to understand what kind of instruction it is not providing. This book is not a step by step instruction on sermon preparation to help the reader understand Scripture by taking the reader from exegesis to application. The authors state two critical assumptions. One is that the reader has "some background in exegetical and traditional homiletics." The second is that their suggestions are shallow if the reader is not a "disciplined student of the Word and of preaching" dependent upon the Holy Spirit to "empower the preaching moment." (11-12)

Rather, this book teaches how to hone the sermon and transform it into language that clearly communicates and impacts the hearers. This is done using journalism techniques. I am familiar with these techniques since my wife has the equivalence of a minor in journalism. I read through one of her main journalism books and Preaching That Connects is a great summary of such a book.

I picked up this book on the recommendation of a friend. After checking it out and seeing the foreword was by Haddon Robinson, I thought I'd give it a shot. I was not disappointed. The authors not only explain the techniques, but they offer examples of them. This makes it easier for the reader who may be unfamiliar with these techniques.

The contents are as follows:

1. Love Your Hearers as Yourself
2. How to Be More Creative
3. Introductions That Get Listeners
4. Structuring Your Sermon for Maximum Effect
5. When You Can't Find an Illustration
6. Good Illustrations - and Great Ones
7. How to Tell a Good Story
8. A Forceful Style
9. Crafting Words That Inspire
10. Pacing
11. Finishing Strong
12. Preaching Within Yourself - and Beyond

A better understanding of what this book offers can be seen in the following two examples. When explaining how to use illustrations the authors explain a Journalism 101 technique -show rather than tell. Showing brings listeners into the story where they can see for themselves. For example,

"'Johnny was mad' is telling; 'Johnny turned red, clenched his teeth, and pounded his fist on the table' is showing." (76)

The authors use a biblical example in chapter Crafting Words That Inspire to show how a well crafted phrase can be appealing.

"Many biblical phrases could be shortened, but the periphrasis appeals to the heart and imagination. Instead of saying, David loves me, God says, "I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart" (Acts 13:22)." (114)

Preaching That Connects is short and easy to read with many examples. This makes it a good quick reference book for instruction and ideas for using journalism techniques in preaching. Working through the suggestions in this book should also help the preacher work through his thoughts to clarify what he is really trying to say. Ultimately, it should help the preacher more clearly communicate and connect with listeners. Not only is this book good to help communication in preaching, but it could also help one become a better writer.

A read-along study
By Massachusetts
A good read along study on Christ. Although it is not like an outline dictionary style where you see the list of prophecies as listed in the Old Testament. But rather it is a read along style. Yet, easy and pleasing to read. The author Herbert Lockyer, take a good firm conservative stand in his writing by presenting questing with Biblical verse answers.
Some chapters and topics are:

- PROPHECIES OF HIS PREEXISTENCE
- PROPHECIES OF HIS BIRTH
- PROPHECIES OF HIS DEATH
- PROPHECIES OF HIS RESURRECTION
- PROPHETIC FOREGLEANS FROM LEVITICAL OFFERINGS
- and more...
Within these topics and chapters are the introduction and teachings bringing out the point of the topic with scriptures references and more.

The Extravagant Fool: A Faith Journey That Begins Where Common Sense Ends, by Kevin Adams

The Extravagant Fool is an underdog narrative. Readers will have a front row seat to Kevin Adams’s breathtaking story―one that builds chronologically through a very difficult four-year period. At the height of financial success, Kevin Adams had it all. A thriving business with more work than he could get to, investments spread out between luxury homes, commercial real estate, and new business ventures. However, by January 2009, over the course of the last 100 days of 2008, Kevin watched in silent amazement as he lost it all. His house of cards came tumbling down.

Kevin had a choice: Do what he had always done―work harder. Or, let go of conventional thinking and learn to live by absolute faith in God. With foreclosures, lawsuits, potential homelessness, and his family looking to him for immediate answers, Kevin took the radical position of stopping every effort to survive and resting instead at the feet of Jesus.

The process of living literally by faith is a gamble and one that only The Extravagant Fool for God is willing to take.

The Extravagant Fool is about encountering God with an uncommon intimacy. Intimacy increases our ability to discern His voice, which leads to the revelation of who we are, what we are to do for Him on earth, and finally, the provision to carry it out. Yet none of this really takes hold without first hearing the kind of living, breathing, testimony offered by The Extravagant Fool, a man who staked his welfare―and future―entirely on the goodness of God.

Awesome challenge to break out of "lifestyle Christianity" and into a place of real faith through radical obedience
By PeterV
In a world where the term “Christian” seems to have remarkably little “Christ” in it, and far too much religion, to find someone, anyone, willing to break out of the dogmatic, shallow mold that religion creates and venture into the very nebulous area of faith is indeed someone to take notice of. Trite, pithy, empty Christian-ese you won’t find in this book. You won’t find cute bumper-sticker slogans, easy spiritualized ‘get-out-of-jail-free’ cards, no charlatan tricks to pray down the life you’ve always wanted. What you WILL get is an very open and raw look at the costs and rewards of breaking out of the religious mold and into the life of a genuine follower and disciple of Jesus Christ.

The road to victorious faith isn’t paved with name-it-claim-it Christianity… it’s paved by people willing to take God at His word, willing to lay down their own agendas and time tables... people who are willing to allow discomfort and suffering to birth spiritual triumph. Its long, painful, dusty and wearying, but eternally worth every bit of pain. Kevin’s book opens up a whole new thought process devoid of empty religion and full of genuine worship and sacrifice. Real faith - the kind found through trials that seem like real-life Garden of Gethsemane moments where you either submit to God’s will even at the cost of the death of all that your flesh desires, or you walk away and continue to live a trite, empty feel-good religion. Kevin’s story pushes you past easy, empty, feel-good Christianity and provokes you to contemplate the deeper calling to live as people of faith, forces you to wrestle with the notion of an empirically GOOD God who allows hurt and suffering for purpose, who calls us to give up things we love to receive things so great that we never thought we could attain to them.

I had to re-read certain sections because my knee-jerk reaction was to shake my fist at life’s unfairness, only to be brought back to the faith that can see a tapestry being woven through so many straggling, disparate cords. This book challenges you to drop the charade, to drop the “comfort zones” of lukewarm Christianity and to plunge head-first off the cliff of faith, not blindly or stupidly, but foolishly (in the eyes of the world) based solely on the character and person of God. It can radically transform your own faith walk. It’s very much challenging my conceptions and spiritual paradigms, much as Kevin’s blog, “Wake Up My Faith” has challenged them consistently for a few years now. This book needs to be read and reread. It’s very worth the purchase!

This Fool Needed A Shot to Her Faith With This Book
By Susan M. Baganz
I have followed Kevin Adams on his blog http://www.wakeupmyfaith.com for several years. When he contacted me to read his book. I jumped at the chance. The Extravagant Fool: A Faith Journey That Begins Where Common Sense Ends was everything and more that my soul needed to hear.

Kevin had it all and in this book he chronicles his drop from the heights of worldly prosperity to the depths where he and his family wondered month to month if they would end up homeless. He was also dropped to his knees in the process. He had lived by the wisdom of Scripture and common sense and where had it brought him? Maybe he didn’t really understand the crux of the Christian faith at all.

Absolute faith became the bywords for the way he and his wife chose to live in the midst of the depths of their struggle while well-intended Christians abounded to tell him to work harder. The fact is, he had tried that. He gave up stopping the striving and instead rested entirely on God for his provision. Radical. Scary. Heart-rippingly revealing of his inner character and the previous shallowness of his sincere faith.

Kevin discovered along the way a deeper understanding of the faithfulness and goodness of God and how when one is desperately needy, God is all he really needs. Even in most Christian circles he would be deemed a fool. While this book is primarily a journey of faith, I believe it is also a journey of sanctification and purification. Kevin and his wife, and their children will be forever changed by their adherence to a counter-cultural faith. I suspect any who read the book will be too.

I was given an advance copy of this book to read. That was in ebook format. I eagerly anticipate the May 6th release date when I can order a paperback copy to highlight with all of Kevin’s insightful words. God may have taken away wealth, but gave Kevin a gift to bless us all with the words of this book.

A witness!!
By Amazon Customer
Kevin, I read your book in two days. I couldn't believe the words coming off the page. In so many parts in your story I felt you were speaking of my experiences. I have tried to express how it felt to go through such things in the best way I could but you got it! You said it in such a way that I could only say... "YEAH! THAT'S RIGHT, THAT'S TRUE!!" I smiled because your story validates my experience and speaks truth on what I have tried to tell people how God had turned my life upside down and closed so many doors and put me in embarrassing situations that I couldn't even explain or understand. I have come to a place I no longer feel the need to explain but to share and help others who are and will be going through this life of changes setup by our Lord.
You have done such an incredible job in how you write your Truth, no sugar coating, but speak authentically. I appreciate your bravery in being so transparent. It's what we have to do and be if we are to make the experience worth the trial.
Congratulations! I'm spreading the word.
