Hosea-Jonah, Volume 31 (Word Biblical Commentary), by Douglas Stuart

The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship.

Overview of Commentary Organization

  • Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology.
  • Each section of the commentary includes:
  • Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope.
  • Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English.
  • Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation.
  • Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here.
  • Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research.
  • Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues.
    • General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Difficult task
By Doug Erlandson
I have often thought that one of the most difficult tasks that a biblical scholar must face is trying to write a one-volume commentary on several books of the Bible. This is especially true when the only obvious linkage is that they are found consecutively in our English Bible. Douglas Stuart appears to have done an excellent job of providing a scholarly but readable and lively commentary on the books of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, and Jonah. Despite the fact that he has tackled five books that have divergent (although not entirely unrelated) themes and different settings, Stuart has provided us with commentaries on each of these books that are insightful and scholarly. Needless to say, more space is given to the longer books (Hosea covers approximately 220 pages of text versus just 21 for Obadiah), but none receives short shrift.

The introductory material to each of these prophets is enlightening, and while not extremely detailed, provides the reader with a decent amount of background material. The more technical matters regarding the Hebrew text are generally set apart in the "Notes" section that follows immediately upon the English translation of a passage, and any Hebrew in the commentary section itself is accompanied by an English translation, meaning that a working knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary for fully benefitting from the commentary. The commentary section (as well as the introductions) provides not just interpretation of the text but, where important, crucial background information regarding geography, culture, societal practices, and the like. (For example, in the commentary on Amos there is a significant amount of material that enables us to better understand the nature of the practices that Amos is condemning.)

I highly recommend this commentary to anyone seeking to gain a greater knowledge of one or more of these five books.

Excellent commentary!
By Donald Liles
This is one of the best commentaries you could buy for these minor prophets. Douglas Stuart does an excellent job expositing the texts of each book. I bought this mainly for Hosea, but have been thankful to have excellent evangelical scholarship applied to Joel and Jonah as well. I highly recommend this for your library.

Excellent commentary on five of the Minor Prophets
By Doug Erlandson
One of the most difficult tasks a biblical scholar faces is trying to write a one-volume commentary on several books of the Bible, especially when the only obvious linkage is that they are found consecutively in our English Bible. Somehow Douglas Stuart has pulled this off and the result is a scholarly but readable and lively commentary on the books of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, and Jonah. While more space is given to the longer books (Hosea covers approximately 220 pages of text versus just 21 for Obadiah), none receives short shrift.

Anyone seeking to gain a better understanding of one or more of these five books will benefit from reading this commentary.

A nice collection of short prayers for children
By Tanya Dennis
Award-winning poet Lee Bennett Hopkins compiled a nice collection of prayers, including two of his own original works, in Hear My Prayer. Fourteen prayers in all, some are familiar and others brand new. While nine of them were written by anonymous authors, others are from Rebecca Kai Dotlich and Robert Browning.

The illustrations by Gretchen "Gigi" Moore are saturated with bold color. They feature diversity of characters and a touch of whimsy.

WHAT I LIKE: I like that the prayers are personal. The book offers beautiful examples for children to follow when they don't know how to pray or what to pray for. Short in length, they make for easy memorization, too. My 6-year-old likes that she can read this book by herself. The font is large and clear, perfect for emerging readers.

WHAT I DISLIKE: The illustrations are not my favorite style. They appear "unfinished." Other than that, there is nothing I specifically "dislike." But there is also nothing that stands out as extraordinary.

OVERALL RATING: Good.

It's a great set of prayers and wonderful to talk through with my kids, but it didn't quite work for my family.

However, I could see this being a wonderful baby shower present for a first time Mom.

Excellent Youth Ministry Resource
By S. Stevenson
Working with junior highers and high schoolers both at camps and through my church, I'm always looking for great youth ministry material to keep me excited and on track in serving the students. I laughed when I first saw the cover for DO THEY RUN WHEN THEY SEE YOU COMING? but as I dived into the book, I found a very serious, very in-depth guide to reaching those students who aren't all that "churchy."

Jonathan McKee shares story upon story, driving home the different aspects of reaching unchurched teenagers. Some of them are sincerely heartfelt and emotional, and others are exciting to the point of shouting "Hallelujah!" McKee covers topics such as sharing the Gospel with love, help with ways to build relationships, not projects, and practical examples of what others have done to reach students on campus and off. I was very thankful that he included a chapter on follow-up, and drove home the point of sticking it out with kids, no matter what's going on in their lives or ours.

If you are involved in any sort of student ministry, this is an EXCELLENT resource to give you advice, help you get motivated, and be ready to love the students you are working with. Definitely add this one to your bookshelf.

Very helpful and makes a person better.
By K. Whicheloe
I found this book to be very helpful in my youth work. I was asked to work with our middle school youth and did so willing. I had no experience or any idea what to do with these kids besides play games and feed them. These things still work well, but after reading this book and The Top 12 Resources Youth Workers Want, now I am more equipped to have discussions and learn together about Jesus and our lives as Christian people. I feel better about who I am, making me also feel better about who the kids are. Jonathan McKee is sharing his gifts, and for that I thank him.

The Expositor's Bible Commentary, Vol. 7: Daniel and the Minor Prophets, by Frank E. Gaebelein

The Gold Medallion Award-winning Expositor's Bible Commentary is a major contribution to the study and understanding of the Scriptures. Providing pastors and Bible students with a comprehensive and scholarly tool for the exposition of the Scriptures and the teaching and proclamation of their message, this twelve-volume reference work has become a staple of seminary and college libraries and pastors' studies worldwide. The seventy-eight contributors come from the United States, Canada, England, Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand, and from many denominations, including Anglican, Baptist, Brethren, Methodist, Nazarene, Presbyterian, and Reformed. They represent the best in evangelical scholarship committed to the divine inspiration, complete trustworthiness, and full authority of the Bible. The Expositor's Bible Commentary uses the New International Version for its English text, but also refers freely to other translations and to the original languages. Each book of the Bible has, in addition to its exposition, an introduction, outline, and bibliography. Notes on textual questions and special problems are correlated with the expository units; transliteration and translation of Semitic and Greek words make the more technical notes accessible to readers unacquainted with the biblical languages. In matters where marked differences of opinion exist, commentators, while stating their own convictions, deal fairly and irenically with opposing views. Review of set, not specific volume
By Paul Forster
Let me start by saying that I have owned the full 12-volume set for about a year and use it quite frequently as a resource. To be fair, I have yet to use this particular volume. However, as there seem to be no competent reviews on the set as a whole, I did want to add my impressions of this terrific resource.

I can say that I'm very satisfied with my purchase of the 12 volumes in this set. Every portion has been quite helpful, and this is an amazingly simple and inexpensive way to assemble a good library of commentaries on the entire Bible. Obviously the commentaries are not as thorough as one may find in other series, such as the excellent (although not yet quite complete) "New International Commentary on the New Testament" or a similar series. However, for most Christians who teach or lead small groups in their churches, this set can serve as a great resource to get started with, and one that can easily be supplimented with specific volumes that treat a book of the Bible in greater depth as those books are needed. Additionally, this resource can be more useful than a larger volume in situations where one is interested in looking at a few chapters of scripture at a time, or where one just needs to understand what a verse or two might mean. Thanks to the very clear and practical verse by verse organization, it's a terrific tool to do just that.

Also, I will add that (at the time of this writing) it should be possible to buy the entire set for around $150 or less, so I would suggest shopping a bit if you plan to purchase all 12 volumes.

Strongly recommended.

Very Good Set
By Robert Anderton
I have owned all twelve volumes of the Expositor's Bible Commentary for years, and really like this volume. I have found it very useful - particularly the Daniel commentary by Gleason Archer, Jr. However, I have the set with "Frank E. Gaebelein, Editor." I cannot recommend the revised commentaries by new editors, because they used new authors for many of the books.

A HELPFUL AND USEFUL TOOL
By Cal Redmond
This is a helpful, intermediate to advanced level commentary. It is useful in giving evangelical introductions to each of the books, including a consideration of the historical setting of each book. A Ph.D. student would find this isn't enough; a high school graduate would probably do OK with it, but it might be pushing the high school grad somewhat. It is very useful to have useful commentaries for each of these small books instead of trying to get individual commentaries for each one. I believe there may be a more recent edition than the one I purchased.

could have been better
By Jennifer Slattery, novelist, New Hope Publishers
This book is an action adventure story about a young boy and his dad who must dodge one storm after another as they rush to acquire medicine that is desperately neededd for a young diabetic named Suzie Que. Centered on the Yukon in Alaska, it was apparent that the author spent a lot of time researching Alaska and blizzard survival. It was interesting to hear about some of the basic "preparations" Alaskans might take just to go on a three to four hour drive as the reality of getting stranded in a storm weighed upon their minds.

This book contains more "boyfriend-girlfriend" inferences than I would have liked to see in a Christian fiction book for "tweens". I think the story would have been stronger if this aspect was not included. I also would have liked to see the main characters in the book demonstrate a closer, more personal relationship with God.

However, it was clean in both language and content and may appeal to boys.

Fit to Be Tied (The Sisters of Bethlehem Springs), by Robin Lee Hatcher

It’s 1916, and Idaho rancher Cleo Arlington knows everything about horses but nothing about men. So when charged with transforming English aristocrat Sherwood Statham from playboy into cowboy, she’s totally disconcerted. So is Statham, who’s never encountered a woman succeeding in a “man’s world.” Their bumpy trot into romance is frustrating, exhilarating, and ultimately heartwarming.

Entertaining
By Amazon Customer
In Fit to Be Tied, Robin Lee Hatcher continues her "The Sister's of Bethlehem Springs" series. You do not have to read the first to enjoy the second. Tomboy Cleo Arlington is content to wear pants instead of dresses and to tame horses instead of do embroidery. Forced to do anything else and her temper flares. Across the world, war veteran Sherwood Statham runs from his memories and experiences, indulging in wine, women, and gambling. His embarrassed father, a Duke, sends his son to America hoping he'll reform, but at the least, relieved to have his son out of sight. When Cleo and Sherwood meet, there are fireworks. Will they be willing to change to at least keep the peace on the ranch?

Anyone who has read a Christian romance novel knows how the book turns out without even turning a page. Usually, I do not enjoy reading them for that reason. This book is different. I found the characters to be interesting enough to hold my attention. The rhythm of the book does flow nicely although there are a few times I needed to reread to figure out the exact time table of events. Overall, this was an entertaining way to pass a few hours and would make a good book for under the Christmas tree.

2nd in Sisters of Bethlehem Springs series exceeds the first
By Christina Lockstein
Fit to be Tied by Robin Lee Hatcher is the second book in the Sisters of Bethlehem Springs series. Cleo Arlington is a one of a kind, especially in 1916. More comfortable breaking horses than wearing dresses, she's accustomed to running the family ranch, until Sherwood Statham, son of an English duke, shows up, exiled by his family to work a real job and work on not bring shame to the family name. Hard-headed and feisty, she makes for a perfect heroine! Hatcher is one of my favorite authors, and this historical romance is thoroughly enjoyable. It breaks out of the cliches western romances often fall into, and I have to admit, toward the end, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough trying to figure out how the two would end up together. Hatcher keeps the story moving without using stereotypes or cardboard plot devices. I look forward to the sequel, A Word to the Wise, coming out in spring 2010.

A fun novel that will delight many a romance reader
By Midwest Book Review
Opposites can attract, and Cleo may have just found that opposite. "Fit to be Tied" tells of the romance of Cleo Arlington, a tomboy in the early twentieth century. Believing no one will go for her ranch hand ways, when posh Sherwood Statham appears in her life, the very definition of high class Britain, she finds that she may have been looking in the wrong places all this time. "Fit to be Tied" is a fun novel that will delight many a romance reader.

Great book for kids who don't like reading.
By Laurie
I have an 8 year old brother who hates to read even if someone is reading to him. However, I have found that sometimes I can intrigue his interest by using adventure packed or humorous stories. His most favorite books are this series and Junie B. Jones. We ended up doing his book fair project on this particular book and instead of complaining while we read the book and made the story board, he begged for us to read one more chapter (and then one more chapter after that). Also, he became very creative with his story board because he was so intrigued by this story. I loved the morals put forth in this story as well. By the end of the book, the whole family ended up sitting in the living room and taking turns reading aloud a chapter. The book was fast paced and didn't get bogged down with boring details like some other books. Another plus to the book is that it has airplanes and "Cannibal" tribes. I believe that my brother really enjoyed those features of the book the most. I can't wait to get the rest of the series and read it with my family.

I read this aloud to my two chldren, 5 and 7. We couldn't stop reading it because we had to know what happened next! This came in our homeschool books set for the year. I appreciate such exciting Christian books. My son just turned 7 and he asked for the next two books for one of his birthday presents. Our message to Jerry Jenkins: WRITE MORE BOOKS IN THIS SERIES please!!! :)

Heart Made Whole: Turning Your Unhealed Pain into Your Greatest Strength, by Christa Black Gifford

In Heart Made Whole, Christa Black Gifford shares her own stories of loss, betrayal, and personal tragedy, chronicling clear steps to redemption to help those in pain invite the true Healer into the tangled mess of their broken hearts. Gifford reminds readers that pain is not their enemy, however, unhealed pain can become their greatest foe if it’s not taken to Jesus.

Growing up as a preacher's kid, Gifford had been submerged in Christian culture for decades when she uncovered the truth--that there were broken parts of her heart that weren't on friendly terms with the God who lived inside. Through disappointments and traumas, she had learned to guard her heart from God, keeping her angry, entrapped, and disconnected. As struggles and hardships continued, she finally learned to run towards her relationship with God when things got hard, instead of running away from Him like she had in the past. The more that she did this--building her heart's capacity for intimacy and deep relationship--the more her heart began to heal from the inside-out. She teaches the reader to access the solution that's already living inside of them--the God who forever made their heart a home.

When trials and tragedy hit our lives in a fallen world, our hearts can get smashed to bits, and we end up putting God on trial and blaming Him for the mess. But Christa helps readers understand that they don’t have to live controlled by their circumstances – or angry with God. Instead, she provides powerful insight and practical steps to turn the painful fire that comes to destroy us into an unexpected friend that can produce our greatest healing.

The condition of the heart determines the condition of life—and the heart can be bound up and healed, producing freedom and abundant life. With personal workbook sections for each chapter Christa helps readers experience steps to turn their pain into the healing and wholeness available to every believer.

Review
On a dry erase board in our youngest daughter's room, we saw the verse Christa had challenged our three girls to memorize: 'Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it' (Prov. 4:23). During those years she lived with us and played with Michael in his band, she profoundly impacted our children with the way she walked her faith out before them. Little did we know that some of the struggles she shared with us (and many she didn't) would eventually lead her to healing and the wise words in these pages. We urge you to read this book and open your hearts as you do ... it's a beautiful guide to the healing Jesus longs to bring to every broken piece of your heart! (― Michael W. Smith)

If anyone can take you on a heart journey to freedom and wholeness, it is this powerful woman of God. The seat of her power is a constant Christ-centered experience of life. I know Christa and Luke. I’ve witnessed indescribable agony overwhelmed by the Comforter. This book will transform you because the author is deeply authentic in Christ. (― Graham Cooke, Brilliantperspectives.com)

Heart Made Whole is a wonderfully vivid and beautifully raw account of the journey that Christa and her family have endured. From rejection to redemption, betrayal to belonging, this book guides the wounded heart to the only place where we can experience wholeness: the Heart of the Father. This is a must-read in any season of life, and it's still impacting me. (― Meredith Andrews, Worship leader and Dove Award-winning recording artist)

Heart Made Whole is a stunning book that lets you look into life and its deepest of pains. Christa, the author, has lived deep pain. In this book she shares her process. How do you live life when it feels like your whole world will never be worth anything again? The beauty of this book gives you tools on how to live again and, most importantly, how to find God and let the healing happen. (― Beni Johnson, Author of Healthy and Free and The Happy Intercessor)

Almost everyone battles feelings of hurt and loss at some point in their lives. I know I have. That’s exactly why Christa Black Gifford's life-changing book Heart Made Whole is a must-read. It is honest, vulnerable, and brave. Christa's passion for helping other hearts be made whole is beautiful. (― Alli Worthington, Author of Breaking Busy: Finding Peace and Purpose in a World of Crazy)

I am a fi believer that you cannot take others where you have not been yourself. Christa writes from a raw and real place, and I have watched as she has walked through the valley of the shadow of death and come through victoriously on the other side. The Bible says clearly that out of our heart flows the issues of life, yet too many people are coping through life with fractured hearts and wonder why they are not living in the fullness of what Jesus promised for them. As you read these pages, apply these truths, and allow Jesus to come in and breathe life where there was death, you will discover a freedom that is life- changing. Christa's ability to articulate this process is breathtaking and inspiring. Thank you, Christa, for your transparency and vulnerability on every page and for the truth of God's Word that will bring freedom into the lives of every reader. (― Alex Seeley, Pastor, The Belonging Co Church, Nashville)

Deep, honest, powerful, and moving, Heart Made Whole is a book like no other I have ever read. I was gripped by Christa's raw storytelling and changed by her leadership into the exploration of my own heart. This book took courage to write, and I'm so thankful Christa was willing. (― Annie Downs, Author of Looking for Lovely and Let’s All Be Brave)

The truth, depth, and transparency Christa has shared in Heart Made Whole is so impacting. I believe it will help you to overcome your pain and come to know God as the Healer, Restorer, and gracious Father He is, reminding you of a love that is present in the darkest of moments to make your heart whole. (― Kari Jobe)

What Christa and Lucas had to go through when they lost their daughter, Goldie, is unimaginable. I wish that they never had to experience one ounce of what they did. However, I am so grateful that Christa had the ability and strength to take her broken heart to Jesus and not only learn how to navigate through the pain, but also be gracious enough to share her journey and heart lessons with all of us. It's not every day that we get invited into the deepest darkest places of someone's heart and get to watch how they triumphed through tragedy and came out victorious on the other side. Her wisdom is invaluable, and this book is a true treasure. (― Anjelah Johnson-Reyes)

While most of us have never experienced the unimaginable pain of losing a child, we all have experienced pain in our lives. That pain, when not dealt with properly, wreaks havoc on a heart that was meant to be fully alive by experiencing the radical love of a Father. As I read Heart Made Whole, I was deeply affected and ministered to as Christa, through her writing, spoke truth and life into my own heart. Christa has given us an incredible gift as she opens up her life in intimate ways to reveal how even the most broken hearts can be made whole. (― Banning Liebscher, Founder and pastor of Jesus Culture)

Christa’s vulnerability and honesty on these pages is nothing short of astounding. I found myself letting the tears silently roll as my heart breathed a sigh of relief. If we let it, this book could affect the way we approach the intricacies of being human--- from today forward. I know it will for me. (― Amanda Cook)

I have had the great honor of knowing Christa for five years now. As a friend, I grieved with her when her sweet baby girl died and in the days following. I watched in amazement as God began to heal and transform her heart. In her new book Heart Made Whole, Christa writes with authority, passion, and incredible vulnerability. This is a book for every gender, every generation, and every heart that refuses to be bound and broken. Christa’s heartfelt words and experience will inspire you! (― Kim Walker-Smith, Jesus Culture)

This book takes you on a journey. By the first few paragraphs you are bawling, and by the end you feel a sense of inner strength that completely rocks you from the inside out. Christa doesn't just share her story, but invites you to really evaluate your own, and what I loved most was her transparency and rawness through it all. READ it, TAKE it in, and GIVE your heart the healing and wholeness it's been looking for. (― Blanca)

A MUST MUST MUST read
By Amazon Customer
I don't think that there are enough words to describe all the wonderful things that this book is.. Just like Christa has said, I don't think I know anyone who has never experienced pain, or suffered from a broken heart. We have all grown in a culture where pain is seen as a weakness and the ways we have dealt with it may have been more damaging than we intended. In this book Christa suggests something that at first sounded so outrageous, that pain does not have to be our enemy. That something we have learned to demonize can actually be the very thing that can help lead us to wholeness and to encounter love. Christa has introduced a profound idea that if we allow ourselves to accept where we are in our process of life, instead of shaming ourselves for our pain- that we can experience love in greater measures than we realize.

This book not only helps to navigate the journey from pain to healing in death, loss, and sickness, but it also offers the message of hope for people who have inflicted pain and trauma onto themselves through self-condemnation and self-hatred. There is something in this book for people who felt like their depression and anxiety came from an insignificant place and shamed themselves for allowing their heart's wounds to come to the surface. For the peace and joy that I robbed myself of by thinking I was not worth experiencing anything good, this book helped to restore my hope and truth back into my life. Christa's bravely stepped into uncharted territory to call out the way that society has taught us to mismanage our pain. She opened herself up to share her journey and her process to and invites us to walk it out with her with this book. Her testimony and healing experience is undeniable and she created a safe place for all who read this book to experience it for themselves. Her courage was poured into me through these pages to be brave and to begin a journey towards wholeness. We can feel ok about taking care of our hearts because our hearts are worth it, we are worth it.

Intimacy with Perfect Love
By Amazon Customer
I don't think I realised the incredible amount of transformation & healing that was about to occur (and continues on a daily basis) when I started to read this book.

Christa's raw vulnerability gave me the courage to face and admit the very thing I have been rejecting and running from all of my life without even realising it….intimacy with Perfect Love. Love was perverted and distorted terribly for me from a very early age, and it just progressed in my life because I attracted my wounding and also made wrong choices.

I never knew Jesus was waiting for me in the sanctuary of my heart, I knew with my head He calls me beautiful, and daughter, but not with my heart. I never knew He was waiting in the mess there for me, just wanting to BE with me and just wanting me to BE. I didn't realise I knew so little about myself and how I operate but I think my biggest shock was not realising just how much hurt, sadness, anger, bitterness, fear, shame and so much more I have still been carrying.

I has been the most freeing thing ever to be able to admit these things, and not quote scripture at them, or go into denial, or worship them away, I never knew I could bring these things to Jesus, because actually, the truth is, God is NOT afraid or intimated by our honesty! This has been the most difficult but most beautiful journey I have ever been on whilst reading, this book is GOLD, literally! I am looking forward to walking this out as a lifestyle, NOT just an encounter, I am excited to see how many hearts will be made whole through Christa's story and journey through grief but even more excited to hear testimonies of Hearts Made Whole!

This book really has and continues to change my life. THANK YOU!
