Imagine coming to a crossroads where you're no longer sure who you are, why you do what you do, why you believe the way you do. You're not even sure you care. Where do you go? Follow the stories of people who were steeped in their beliefs--a former fundamentalist, a former Pentecostal, a former liberal, a former feminist, a former communist, and several other 'formers'--and walk with them on their journeys out of those beliefs. See what twists and turns arise before them, and find out what they learned (about faith, themselves, their beliefs, the world) as they emerged on the other side. This diverse group of Christian leaders discloses and shares in vulnerable, uncommon ways, allowing you full access into their doubts, fears, convictions, and unanswered questions. Each takes you on a path from absolute to authentic: from a place of false conviction and thin resolution, through struggles and growing pains, to a new place that's much more about process than about having 'arrived.' When it comes to journeys of faith, we often don't know what lies at the end of the road. It's difficult to take the first step when we are so unsure of the destination. As you read these stories, you'll find there is room to challenge your fears as well as your faith.

From Publishers Weekly
In this anthology about ministry and the Christian faith in the early 21st century, some of the finest evangelical storytellers share their personal tales. Ministers, writers and evangelists edgily explore what it means to be a faithful follower of and witness to Jesus Christ. Eastern Orthodox memoirist Frederica Mathewes-Green explains why she rejected feminism, Jay Bakker describes heart-to-hearts with young men in bars and Joanne Badley meditates on living in exile. James Engle's bracing piece about evangelism, work and the business world is alone worth the price of admission. (Why do evangelicals get exorcised about abortion and homosexuality, he asks, but "remain silent about endemic public corruption?") An afterword by Brian McLaren, author of the much-heralded A New Kind of Christian, draws together the overarching theme of the essays: new voices, ones that push certain envelopes, are emerging within evangelicalism. McLaren hopes the old guard will be attentive, rather than threatened. The only thing that disappoints is the book's too-hip packaging. This collection bends over backwards to look as though it is engaging postmodernity-but, in fact, few of these stories are especially concerned with postmodern issues. The end result is that, while each single essay stands as interesting and thought-provoking, the anthology as a whole seems faintly manipulative in its savvy marketing. Still, Christian readers who do not find this too distracting will be richly rewarded for perusing these stories of emergence.

It put me to sleep and woke me up
By A Customer
Besides Yaconelli and McLaren, thirteen different people share their frustration with the modernistic church and how they escaped the discontent. While the book contained some great insights - James Engel's view of evangelism, for example - I was pretty bored through about half of the book. What is to be expected when you have so many different writers? Perhaps this is one point of postmodernism - everyone's stories will not be exciting, and that is okay. Honestly, I bought the book because of McLaren and Yaconelli, but they weren't so much the players in the game as they were the announcers at the game. If you are discontent with boring, businesslike christianity, this book will share some real-life stories and, possibly, give you some hope that all Christians aren't the same. Don't buy it for a definition of postmodernism or for Yaconelli's name. For Yaconelli-likers, look into Dangerous Wonder or Messy Spirituality - two great thought-challenging books.

Stories of Grace
By Alwyn Lau
The multi-authored Stories of Emergence showcases personal stories of church disillusionment and suspicion with the institutionalised, doctrine-oriented church, out of which emerges (you knew I was going to use this word, right?) new thinking and (perceived) authenticity in spirituality and the understanding of what this whole 'God' thing is about.

For the book's sake, it probably isn't a good idea to read all the stories at one go. Treat it like Dilbert and make it a friend for a time-out. Two stories max per reading should suffice.

And there are some good ones. The story I started with, Frederica Mathewes-Green's chastisement her earlier feminist attitudes, was one of the best, for me:

"It's not what feminists say, but how they it...An attitude of self-righteousness. A tendency to pull rank as a victim. A lack of humility. A blindness to the fact that women, just as talented as men, are just as sinful too. Smugness, touchiness, judgmentalism, and even darkner notes of condescension, ridicule, and anger toward men.

"Pretty much the opposite of every line in 1 Corinthians 13. My brothers and sisters, 'you have not so learned Christ' (Ephesians 4:20)" (p.134)

I also enjoyed Tony Jones sharing of his character-shaping encounters with people like James McClendon, Nancey Pearcey and Miroslav Volf. It's strikingly coincidental how barely a few hours after I first heard the word 'liminal' during a meeting, I saw it again in Jones' essay, talking about liminal times - the "thin times, the border times when we're in the midst of cultural change". (p.66)

Todd Hunter's piece brought back some cute memories of friends telling me about the un-Christian it was to have drums in church(!). And how can I not resonate with Spencer Burke's paragraph on spiritual McCarthyism:

"In today's evangelical world, one of the worst things you can be called is liberal. Challenge an accepted belief or confess doubt and you're the equivalent of a card-carrying communist. Brows furrow. Eyes narrow. Lips purse." (p.30)

Brian McLaren echoes this tension when he writes in his afterword:

"(Can) the gatekeepers of modern evangelicalism see these brothers and sisters as resources, pioneers, a research-and-development wing of the movement...or will they see them as a threat?" (p.224)

I also suspect God planned it such that I had to be at an unfamiliar section of town at 5.30 in the morning (after dropping my dad off at the bus station), drinking coffee and reading these words by Chris Seay, "Jesus understood that it's not only the truth that changes us, but also the journey of seeking truth."

This book isn't for those who want some idea on how to "move forward" in one's walk and ministry with Christ. It'd be a mistake to take any one story and say, "That's how I/we should progress". Unless I'm completely mistaken, the very idea of progress isn't even a category in emergent thought.

There are no "doctrines" in the book, no new theology, no new "synthesis of ideas" and what-nots. This will undoubtedly leave the reader with the impression that the authors care more about praxis than about doctrine (eliciting, as much of Emergent output has, the occasional remonstrance). They probably do.

In an experimental mode, getting things right is less important than doing as many helpful things as you can. And there's really no other to explain this - except maybe via stories?

Thus, I read these essays - some were dull (because predictable), some sad, most were fun - and emerged (there we go again) a more hopeful person. Hopeful because God does not does not does NOT require super-holy, all-doctrine-knowing perfection from us prior to giving us His joy and using us as conduits of his love.

The stories of emergence are stories of grace.

Note: Don't treat the two-star rating as implying that I'm not *recommending* it. I am. Sorta. It's just that I don't think it need be all that high up on one's "to-read" list. It's a good book to have but there are lots of better stuff out there.

The Stories we find ourselves in.
By James R. V. Matichuk
I have a love hate thing going on with the emergent church. I love the critique of modernity and willow creek, but I sometimes wonder what positve contribution emergent people have brought to the dialogue. It is easier to tear down than destroy. But this is not a negative book. Not even a little. The people in this book are all very cultural engaged. And are all very diverse, and they focus on their story.
You don't get the same boring rehash of where the enlightenment got us, and what to do about it analysis. These stories have a more personal dimension to them. Every person writing decided what ways they should engage the culture in their context. There is nothing formulaic about it.
If I have one criticism, it is that I wish a few other authors were included. But that doesn't mean what others offered will be found wanting. Excellent book.
Mike Yaconelli lives on in his uber-chellenging introduction

A course-changing event in one's life can happen in minutes. Or it can form slowly, a primitive webbing splaying into fingers of discontent, a minuscule trail hardening into the sinewed spine of resentment. So it was with the mill workers as the heat-soaked days of summer marched on...

City girl Jessie, orphaned at sixteen, struggles to adjust to life with her barely known aunt and uncle in the tiny town of Bradleyville, Kentucky. Eight years later (1968), she plans on leaving---to follow in her revered mother's footsteps of serving the homeless. But the peaceful town she's come to love is about to be tragically shattered. Threats of a labor strike rumble through the streets, and Jessie's new love and her uncle are swept into the maelstrom. Caught between the pacifist teachings of her mother and these two men, Jessie desperately tries to deny that Bradleyville is rolling toward violence and destruction.

I was hooked before the 5'th sentence
By Amazon Customer
I don't often write reviews on books, but in this case I must. I chose this book in the hope that I would find an interesting Christian story that I would enjoy and my daughters can also read. I will freely admit that Christian fiction is often sappy and predictable, especially Christian romance. Worse, (though I'm a Christian myself) I often cringe at the way God is represented in Christian novels and/or the "preachiness" in them. As a result, I did not have a lot of hope for this one when I opened it on my Kindle. Imagine my surprise, then, at finding myself standing (figuratively of course) beside the main character within the first 5 sentences. I don't know how Collins did it, but the story drew me in right away and kept me there throughout. It wasn't anything like I'd expected. Nothing in it forced me to "suspend my disbelief" as I so often need to do when reading fiction. This is a story that could be real in our world. The characters are reality based. Even the "heroes" are as flawed as we are. But from the moment I began reading I cared about them. They were me, my daughters, my husband, my friends. I cried along with Jessie in the beginning. I wanted to shout at her right along with her aunt 3/4 of the way through. I hoped in the end that the right decisions would be made by each of the characters knowing full well that some of them would make the wrong ones. And God was the God I've experienced in my own life. Always there, always working for the good of those who love Him, even in the midst of their own poor choices and the painful circumstances of life. In short, I'm glad I downloaded this book and will definitely recommend it to my girls and friends. Of course, now I need to read the other books too.

Deeply moving, something to savor like a warm cup of cocoa on a cold winter evening!
By S. Brower
This is the novel that introduced me to Brandilyn Collins and I absolutely loved it. While I enjoy her fast-paced seatbelt suspense, this character-driven novel--first in a series of three--is a story that I could savor over time. I did not find it preachy, but rather reflective of a time and setting in which faith was an integral part of life. It's a realistic portrayal of the struggles in the mining towns in post WWII Kentucky.

great book
By Writer'sPen
I would heartily recommend adding this book to your library.

This book pairs the phrase "Yea! I can say" with, "Please," Thank You," "I'll share with you," "I'm Sorry," and, "I love you."

Each concept is illustrated with a beautiful picture of a little one, acting that phrase out (Sharing a rocking horse, opening a present, kissing their little brother, etc.)

Both my one and two year old love it because of the pictures, but probably like most parents I improvise with the text a bit, expanding it by pointing to the picture and saying 'that little girl got a present and now she's saying 'thank you' to her mommy!' Do you see the present? Where's the little girl's hair? Where's your hair? etc. :)

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—This treasury includes poems, famous quotes, and proverbs about friendship. Engelbreit's vintage, sewing-sampler illustration style lends itself well to this collection's theme, but not its intended audience. While each page could stand alone as framed artwork for fans of saccharine, flower-filled fodder, the work lacks appeal for picture book readers. Children will lose interest without anything more than the friendship theme tying the pages together. The quotes are from famous literary figures or the Bible or are listed as anonymous and likely will not resonate with young readers. For instance, a quote attributed to George Eliot reads, "Animals are such agreeable friends—they ask no questions, they pass no criticisms." School and public library collections will want to use their limited resources on more enticing collections.—Jenna Boles, Greene County Public Library, Beavercreek, OH

Mary Engelbreit's drawings capture a story your child can tell you

The Blessings of Friendship Treasury by Mary Engelbreit, © 2014

This beautiful book by Mary Engelbreit will endear you and your children to it. With the many festive drawings within, your little ones will want to search for the bunny again, and find all the delightful characters. I am reminded of "A Friend Is Someone Who Likes You" by Joan Walsh Anglund and Tomie dePaoli's stories ~ books without words. Each of Mary Engelbreit's drawings capture a story your child can tell you by looking at the activities in the picture. But, indeed ... there are words. Beautiful poems, quotes, and Scriptures are threaded through The Blessings of Friendship Treasury.

One page I especially love, two little girls are having a tea party outdoors. One girl is handing the other girl a double-portion slice of cake. The girl says, "FOR ME??!!" On the other girl's plate is a tiny sliver piece of cake. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." I love the borders she puts around her drawings.

Another has three little boys in their apple tree lookout with two little girls peeking up from below ~ "We have been friends together in sunshine and in shade." --Caroline Norton quote

What medium do you use to create your art?
I use mostly colored markers. Before that, I did only black-and-white drawings because I was terrified I would ruin them if I used color. I moved on to colored pencils, and then I discovered markers. I'd do pen-and-ink outlines, follow that with markers, and then colored pencils to shade and highlight. Now I use colored pencils to completely color over the markers, which preserves the markers. Everybody thinks it's paint, but I actually can't paint, though someday I'd like to learn. maryengelbreit.com

This will be a keepsake book your whole family will enjoy.

A Lovely Book About Friendship
By Natasha J. Parker
I have always liked Mary Englebriet "things", calendars, journals, etc. The whimsical prints and fun sayings are a great addition to an office wall or the side of a fridge, or to carry around in your backpack. The bright, colorful drawings often put a smile on my face and I'm sure they probably put a smile on yours as well. So, when I saw that one of the books offered this month through Booklook Bloggers was "The Blessings of Friendship Treasury" by Mary Englebriet, I knew I had to get it.
This book is every bit as delightful as I imagined it would be. There are, of course, lots of cute Mary Englebriet drawings, most of which are of "friends" - two or more persons in each picture. The content of the book was taken from various places and authors. There are poems and phrases and Bible verses throughout the book, all of which have to do with friendship or being a friend, or helping others. You will most likely recognize many of the authors, including one of my all-time favorites, Shel Siverstien whose poems I absolutely loved as a child. The book is also quite large (11.3x8.7) which is a good sized book for children as the pictures are large and vibrant and will open the imagination of a child. At 40 pages, the book can easily be read during an afternoon, or can be picked up and looked at from time to time - whichever strikes your fancy.
"The Blessings of Friendship Treasury" is a great resource for teaching children about friendship or would even make a great gift for the long-time friend in your life. Very cute and highly recommended!

I heart Mary Engelbreit!
By Amazon Customer
Mary Engelbreit has got to be one of my favorite artists and authors. I have been collecting her books since I changed my name to Jensen (as in I got married). LOL! My MIL has collected them for years and so graciously gave me one of Mary Engelbreit's books a long time ago. After that day I have been gathering them for myself. That's why I was ecstatic when I saw that she was coming out with a new book and I get to review it. It is called The Blessing Of Friendship and let me tell you it is a blessing to me. The pictures are the sweetest and the quotes and verses from the bible are amazing.

Here is a description of the book:

I am truly going to enjoy having this book to look at when I need to smile. And, it comes in one of my favorite colors...red! Also, my MIL's favorite color. I may buy her one for Christmas...ooops! Let the cat out of the bag. Pick up a copy for yourself if you are a fan of Mary Engelbreit's. If you are not a fan or don't know who she is please go get a copy anyway. You will become a fan very quickly. She makes you feel like times are more simple and sweet.

Of the early translational languages of the New Testament, none is more important than Syriac. but honestly Syriac and this book is not a good starting place for introduction to the structure and study ...
By Mr.Punch
Several assumptions in place here: 1) you are interested in this book because you are looking for a "primer" of sorts in Peshitta Syriac/Aramaic because of an interest in Ancient Studies, Biblical Studies, Church History, or related subject matter. 2) You have studied (with middling success or better) a Semitic language before such as Biblical Hebrew, Aramaic, possibly Ge'ez or Coptic, or maybe even Akkadian or Arabic. Not that it's a necessity, but honestly Syriac and this book is not a good starting place for introduction to the structure and study of ancient Semitic languages. Though not a requisite, there are too many Semitic language foundational matters integral to successful study of Syriac as presented here that the student should bring from a knowledge of Biblical Hebrew or Aramaic, that to try to make progress without them in place would leave a novice student frustrated and perplexed. Prof. Hallam provides useful indices and writes from that perspective (of the experienced student coming from a Semitic language backgground) to put that to use.
Those two aside, I will only compare this to Professor Thackston's Introduction to Syriac. Introduction To Syriac
Prof. Hallam keeps in mind this is written for the Zondervan "Basics of" series. He directs interested students looking for more sophisticated and analytic treatment of grammatical and lexical issues to Noldeke (Compendious Syriac Grammar, with an Appendix) or other reference works. That is a good thing. This is an introduction and "basic of" and there is more than enough to master and keep one busy here for the student new to Syriac. Professor Thackston's book presupposes an instructor to direct and redirect, though not obviously required to get something out of it. Professor Hallam contemplates the student working with good Biblical studies software to gain access to Peshitta texts etc., and draw up comparative textual resources. Prof. Thackston's book requires more diligence at first from the self-directed student, and may slow things down for the DIYer; this book moves things along quickly to get to reading actual texts to reward early moderate persistence even for one working apart from formalized settings.

Personally I enjoy them side-by-side. Prof. Hallam knows his target audience and exhorts them accordingly. Learning Syriac to the point where it is actually useful to a student or scholar requires more than an hour or two a week, obviously, and a beginner's text can't do the work for you. I think the person who could most benefit would be someone fresh off intermediate Biblical Hebrew, for example, such that the linguistic concepts are still close at hand.

If Syriac is your third or subsequent Semitic language then you may prefer Thackston's more traditional structure and direction.

A very minor observation (not a critique) is that Professor Hallam takes issue with misconceptions of names of Eastern/Western scripts, and takes pains to point out that a Church schism in the 5th century is likely responsible for the divergences of scripts and tradition. Apparently terminology like "Jacobite" and "Estrangela" are worth disputing over to some people, which really is quite beside the point if we agree on what branch of Aramaic/Syriac/Samaritan we a referring to. Another key insight I found telling is that, as if he is tired of reminding Biblical students, Syriac is not *derived from* Biblical Hebrew but developed alongside it, as part of another branch of Northern Semitic languages. What majority scholarly position would argue otherwise?

The exercises come through clearly, and it is obvious Prof. Hallam knows first hand from the classroom what is helpful and what is not.

while great for reference
By zappori
I consider this book more written for the scholar rather than the layman. I specialize in reading/teaching with the Eastern Aramaic Psheeta used currently in the Assyrian and Chaldean Churches from natives who have cherished the Eastern (Assyrian) style of writing. Mr. Hallam has written this book for the true scholar, not really for the beginner because the result that he seeks to achieve is getting you to read the Estrangela Letters which was the earliest found Writings included. However, his vowel markings lead to some inaccuracies of pronunciation as well as omissions of dots where needed. For the scholar, this may be an outstanding value. For me, however, this book...while great for reference, forgets that Jesus lived in Galilee (the "land of foreigners") which was repopulated by the Assyrians after they conquered, and more likely to follow the Assyrian Aramaic which I do find much easier to learn.!!! (Please note)

You will find the tools you need for meaningful, tolerant, and respectful conversations about your faith with friends who don’t share your views. Forget the “fire and brimstone” approach and the awkward insistence to get other people “saved.” You will discover how to be yourself without alienating others. You’ll learn: How to walk in another person’s shoes. Ways to gently invite others to share. The buzz words that will stop a conversation cold. How to navigate today’s hot-topics. Tools to recover the true meaning of Scripture often obliterated by spiritual writers. How to talk about Jesus as a unique spiritual leader. You will discover how to invite people to become fully who Jesus wants them to be through this coffee shop approach to friendships in your community.

Review
Read Coffee Shop Conversations if you want to engage in interesting provocative dialogue about your faith and journey. The Finchers are bright, thoughtful, and great conversationalists. The evidence is in story after story of fascinating encounters with all kinds of people, and they handle them with grace and truth.” -- Dick Staub

“No message is more important than this: the God of the universe knows all about you, and he loves you and forgives you. Every person touched by that good news should want to share it with others. Why don’t they? Sometimes, it’s simply this: nobody has coached them how to do it in a natural and unpretentious way. Coffee Shop Conversations provides a way for all Christians to make the gospel clear and accessible to everyone. The Finchers’ style of evangelism is both self-aware and empathetic. I highly recommend this book for all who take Jesus’ command to make disciples seriously. I will be using this book in my evangelism courses.” -- Jerry Root

“My roommate is quite openly gay and quite openly confused about religion in general. We've had many great discussions, but some of the points from chapter three---the conversation stoppers---spoke so well to what we talk about. The combination of personal experience and theological background is so helpful for me for our future conversations! This book is applicable to such a wide spectrum of people because, despite the fact that religion is one of those 'no-go' conversation topics, it is very much talked about. This [book] offers people the skills to make a spiritual conversation a little easier, and hopefully less offensive, harsh, and heated but more informational and caring.” -- Ally Packer

“Coffee Shop Conversations is really not a book about talking. It’s a compilation of personal stories that demonstrate how to listen to non-Christians with empathy. It’s a timely book for evangelicals, one that shows us how to love without compromising truth and holiness.” -- Sarah Sumner

“This is helpful, thoughtful, culturally-savvy guidance for spiritual conversations. Read it and learn.” -- John Ortberg

“Coffee Shop Conversations is refreshing, bold, and engaging. Dale and Jonalyn have done a wonderful job of highlighting the importance of genuinely engaging people in meaningful spiritual conversations in the manner and spirit of Jesus.” -- Sean McDowell

From the Back Cover
A 2008 study released by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life notes that the number of people creating their own interpretations of faith and culture is growing. Seems like there are as many different styles of faith as ways to order your latte. How does a Christian have normal conversations about Jesus without accidentally sounding offensive, bigoted or intolerant? You will find the tools you need for meaningful, tolerant, and respectful conversations about your faith with friends who don't share your views. Forget the 'fire and brimstone' approach and the awkward insistence to get other people 'saved.' You will discover how to be yourself without alienating others. You'll learn: How to walk in another person's shoes. Ways to gently invite others to share. The buzz words that will stop a conversation cold. How to navigate today's hot-topics. Tools to recover the true meaning of Scripture often obliterated by spiritual writers. How to talk about Jesus as a unique spiritual leader. You will discover how to invite people to become fully who Jesus wants them to be through this coffee shop approach to friendships in your community.

Excellent!
By Jon Snyder
I just finished Coffee Shop Conversations and thought is was outstanding! Much of my family, most of my closest friends, and almost all of my coworkers do not know Jesus. I love them all, and pray for them earnestly that they would accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. They are intelligent people with well thought-out spiritual opinions, and they ask tough questions. I have found myself ill-equipped to engage them in meaningful conversations about Jesus and spirituality, especially when I find myself in a situation where I only have a few minutes to speak with them. As a professional engineer with a natural bent for identifiable processes, I found Coffee Shop Conversations to be an excellent how-to manual for engaging in spiritual conversations and addressing challenging social issues in our society. I am now much better prepared for those conversations; and while I read this book in hopes of preparing for those conversations, I found that the greatest insights this book offers were insights into my own spirituality and following Jesus more appropriately.

Stop wasting time in idle chit-chat
By Lisa notes...
If you've ever walked away from a conversation thinking, "What precious time we just wasted in idle chitchat," read this book!

It teaches you how to steer conversations to subjects that MATTER, with truth and gentleness, while avoiding being offensive or bullying or just plain weird.

It will open your eyes to how non-believers think so you can move past barriers that typically keep believers and non-believers from sustaining a religious discussion.

In contrast to the beat-over-the-head-with-a-Bible method too often misused in evangelism, the Finchers suggest using seven specific manners for an effective spiritual conversation, including:
Respect one another
Step into their shoes
Wrestle on your own
Share your personal experience
Allow others to remain unconvinced

You'll end up examining how well YOU know Jesus and what you really believe about the "good news" yourself.

The Finchers tell you to keep it simple so you don't get sidetracked on non-essential issues. Remember you are inviting others to Jesus, not to your denomination or particular church.

They teach you how to be free to be yourself as you talk about Jesus in ordinary conversations with ordinary people. Thanks to this book, I feel more confident that I can do this!

Sharing your faith chipmunk-style or coffeehouse-style?
By Susy Flory
When it comes to sharing your faith, do you operate chipmunk-style or coffeehouse-style? If you go the way of the chipmunk, you're on a mission to scurry out and spread the Gospel, then hurry back to your hole. It can be scary, tense, performance-driven, and guilt laden. (If I sound like I know this style intimately, I do. And it paralyzed me from talking freely about my faith for a very long time.) The problem? Most of the time you feel like a failure because sharing your faith with someone doesn't often result in an immediate change of heart. Leaving the well-traveled grooves of a life lived without God takes time and the work of the Holy Spirit.

But coffeehouse-style is different. Coffee Shop Conversations, by Dale Fincher and Jonalyn Fincher, brews up a fresh way to share your faith and a key component is something I was never taught to do when I learned the ways of evangelism: listening. "All people are like packages," write the Finchers. "God invites us to look beyond the outside labels and give people our attention. Jesus shows us how to open the envelopes of people's lives and know our neighbors beyond the roles they play. Like the wrapping, our bodies conceal our souls within. Each person holds unknown surprises, unique concerns, interests, and motivations. What's inside the packages we call people?"

So rather than seeing people as a project, a target, or a mission, we need to see them as precious and unique individuals who cannot be approached with a one-size-fits-all memorized technique. We need to be present, awake and aware in the moment, and primed to infuse even the briefest interaction with meaning. Coffee Shop Conversations' challenge to meet people in love, humility, and grace, and to strive to strike up meaningful spiritual conversations reminds me of what a powerful conversational evangelist once told me: "I choose to keep myself open and talk to people. I stop and listen and I care about their problems. Then, when I look in their eyes, sometimes....sometimes I see a spark, something from deep inside that reaches out to something deep inside me. Then I know that they are looking for something more. It might not happen that day, or that week, or even that year, but I know that if we become friends, someday I will get a chance to share the thing that is most important in my life." The FInchers describe this powerful intersection of souls as "looking beyond different beliefs and into people's souls to see our shared struggles." Because whether someone is a Buddhist, Muslim, Wiccan, or doesn't quite know what they believe, they bear the image of God and we need to treat them with value.

Besides challenging us in Part 1: Making Spiritual Small Talk, to look at sharing our faith in a whole new light, Coffee Shop Conversations is an equipping book. Part 2: Restocking Your Tools, includes engaging chapters on How to Read the Bible, Misquoting Jesus, and differentiating between different religious belief systems in One True Religion. The Finchers even unpack popular spiritual books such as The Secret, The Four Agreements, and a popular Oprah pick, Eckhart Tolle's A New Earth. The last section is Helping Friends Home, and deals with common questions and topics that might arise in spiritual conversations, because, after all, some topics are harder than others. For example, the problem of pain and suffering is one that different religions handle with vastly different ideas on the solution.

Finally, coffee shop conversations are as much about learning as they are about teaching or sharing your faith. "We want this book to serve not merely as a collection of apologetic tools, but as a road map guiding you toward freedom to be yourself as you talk about Jesus. We hope you will customize your conversations to the unique gifts God has forged in your soul. May you develop your own questions and ideas to introduce others to the God of Israel. May you continue to be taught and humbled by the humans God places in your life." Coffee Shop Conversations is a great reminder that it's all about loving your neighbor, and sometimes that's easier, more effective, and a whole lot more fun in a coffee shop. White chocolate mocha, anyone?

This is your blueprint for starting a mercy ministry
By T. Clagett
The first part of this book explains in great detail exactly why the church must engage in ministries of mercy (help for the less fortunate of our world). Pastor Keller lays out just about every biblical reference to this command, and provides reasoning that should convince the most skeptical Christian of the need to do this in your church now.

The command in the story of the Good Samaritan (Go and do likewise) is not a request. It isn't optional. The modern church has largely failed to embrace the need for ministries of mercy. This book can change that.

The second part of the book walks you step by step through the process to create such ministries in your church. It gives you pitfalls to avoid, and the best way to approach it with your church leaders. It is a practical blueprint. Any lay person can take this book, follow it's prescriptions, and start a vibrant ministry of mercy in their own church. That is where the real value of this book is. It isn't just theory.

I couldn't agree more with Pastor Keller that such ministries are the best way to spread our faith, particularly in this cynical, post modern age where our faith is seen by many as an out of date straight jacket on freedom and common sense. (It isn't, of course. See CS Lewis for the answer to that - but that's another review.) What if the world's stereotype of Christians was "that group of people always helping the poor" instead of "that bunch of prudes who want to control me?" If we spent more Saturdays addressing the social needs of our community, we would likely see more butts in the pews on Sunday.

If you agree, and want to participate in such ministries, get this book now. Mine is heavily underlined. Yours will be too.

Biblical and Practical
By Brian G Hedges
This is a biblical and practical book for Christians about why we should be involved in meeting the felt needs of the poor and oppressed -- and how to do it.

The book is divided into two parts, with seven chapters in each. Part 1 lays down the principles for mercy ministries. Keller builds a theology of mercy by expounding the parable of the Good Samaritan, discussing the call, character, and motivation of ministry. He addresses issues such as the lifestyle of believers, how to discern where to focus our efforts in meeting needs, how to address the needs of the poor holistically, and the importance of combining deeds of mercy with evangelistic word-oriented ministry.

Part 2 is more practical and leads the reader through the process of initiating and managing a ministry one step at a time. Attention is given to preparing a church for mercy ministries, mobilizing volunteers, developing vision and strategy, how mercy ministries should relate to evangelism and church growth efforts, and practical criterion for meeting people's needs.

Two helpful features of the book are (1) the careful theological reflection woven throughout, as Keller shows how the gospel informs and shapes ministry, and (2) the many examples and illustrations of individuals, churches, and communities that have embraced mercy ministries.

The only weakness of the book is that it is somewhat dated - the second revision taking place in 1997. Perhaps the next edition will include updated statistics. But this has little impact on the overall value of this very helpful manual on how to meet the needs of hurting people in Jesus' name. I highly recommend this book to pastors and ministry teams.

Excellent!
By A Customer
Liberals tend to blame all poverty and need on oppression, conservatives blame laziness. This book shows how the Biblical conception of the problem is far more sophisticated than either extreme. Hard-thinking Biblical exegesis and practical application make this a truly wonderful book. The author is organizing pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Manhattan, which is known for its Reformed, Evangelical theology and commitment to mercy ministries. It has planted something like a dozen churches (mostly ethnic or multi-ethnic) in the metro. area in the past 10 years. Kellers knows how to operate faithful mercy ministries, in obedience to the Lord's charge to believers. This is a GREAT book!
