About the Author

Chap Clark, PhD (Univ. of Denver), has more than 25 years of experience in youth and family ministry. He is Associate Provost for Regional Campuses and Special Projects and Professor of Youth, Family, and Culture at Fuller Theological Seminary. Chap’s extensive books, articles, and videos focus primarily on relationships. Among his many books are Hurt and Hurt 2.0; Disconnected: Parenting Teens in a MySpace World (coauthored with his wife, Dee); and Deep Justice in a Broken World. Chap and Dee live in Gig Harbor, Washington.

Dr. Kara E. Powell is an educator, professor, youth minister, author, and speaker. She is the Executive director of the Fuller Youth Institute and a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary (see www.fulleryouthinstitute.org). Kara also serves as an Advisor to Youth Specialties and currently volunteers in student ministries at Lake Avenue church in Pasadena, CA. She is the author of many books including Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids (with Chap Clark) and Deep Justice Journeys. Kara lives in Pasadena with her husband, Dave, and their children, Nathan, Krista, and Jessica.

Let's go deep!

This book, Deep Justice in a Broken World, is a much needed resource in a world of fast food, fast cars, and fast relationships. The authors cause us to stop and reflect on how to develop character, true character, in a generation that is trapped in consumerism and surrounded with marketing messages. This is the perfect book for anyone who cares about the future of America - and how our future can help shape the world for the better. I HIGHLY recommend this book!!!

Deep Justice

The book is a good addition to our ministry as we try to incorporate our youth into the church and the overall vision of serving Christ through serving our city and community as a whole and would also recommend some of Tim Keller's work on this topic as well(it is not aimed specifically at children). Another reviewer talked about it being a "paradigm shift" from the traditional keep your teens away and entertained and switches in with deep service and love for others. This insight has fit very well with our multi generations style of home group smaller church family units and how they embrace their local neighbors through true loving service as a group as well as just individuals day to day.

Good, but not as good as the rest of the series

I think this book was really good in the beginning. Later, bad stuff keeps happening to Sophie that makes it not as good as the other books, mainly because it feels like there's no hope for Sophie. I liked the end a lot too though. I would recommend this book because I still loved it, but not as highly as the rest of the series.

About the Author

David J.A. Clines is Professor of Biblical Studies in the University of Sheffield (England), Joint Editor of the Journal for the Study of the Old Testament, and Editor of The Dictionary of Classical Hebrew. He holds the B.A. degree from the University of Sydney (Australia) and the M.A. from Cambridge University. Selected publications by Professor Clines include I, He, We and They: A Literary Approach to Isaiah 53, The Theme of the Pentateuch, The Esther Scroll: The Story of the Story, and the commentary on Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther in the New Century Bible.

Bruce M. Metzger (1914 – 2007) was a biblical scholar, textual critic, and a longtime professor at Princeton Theological Seminary. Metzger is widely considered one of the most influential New Testament scholars of the 20th century. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2007).

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984).

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah. He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

James W. Watts is a professor and chair of the Department of Religion at Syracuse University. His teaching and research interests include biblical studies, especially the Torah/Pentateuch, ritual theories, rhetorical analysis, and comparative scriptures studies. He is a co-founder of the Iconic Books Project. He had served as the associate Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2011).

Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Lynn Allan Losie is Associate Professor of New Testament at Azusa Pacific University. A generalist in New Testament studies, Dr. Losie teaches courses in the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, and the Pauline Epistles, as well as in the background areas of Greek, early Judaism, and the greater Hellenistic World. He has published articles on the New Testament and had served as the associate New Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1997 - 2013). Ordained as a Baptist minister, he has also served in pastoral ministry in Southern California and Oregon.

Highly recommend!

As the editor who worked with Christa on this book and the entire series, I simply cannot recommend it highly enough! Each book gets better as the series progresses, with a major surprise twist in the last book (Garden Gate) which even I didn't see coming! Christa is an excellent writer, and the Threshold Series is an excellent series about the spiritual warfare that takes place around us everyday, and 15-year-old Prissie, who can see the angels and demons around her.

THE BROKEN WINDOW is the third book in The Threshold Series. Book One was THE BLUE DOOR, Book Two was THE HIDDEN DEEP and soon to come is Book Four, THE GARDEN GATE. The series started out with the main character Prissie Pomeroy, a young 15 year old.

She has realized she can communicate with angels. The angels she has known have been from Heaven. When she sees the angels that have Fallen, she is very upset. From the first book THE BLUE DOOR, we have followed Prissie and watched her change from the naive young girl to a much more mature young adult. She still has and cares for her angel friends. Prissie is about to learn some valuable lessons about what is important and what isn't. They are very important to her. Ms. Kinde doesn't fail to deliver a another wonderful book that is not only entertaining but carries a spiritual message also. There isn't any preaching, just a subtle message for the young readers. It is not a religious book, per say. The author has developed the characters throughout the series. The reader is not only reading a story but they can become part of it. They can be Prissie's friend. This is a wonderful book for the young and the young at heart to read and re-read. I don't think you can get enough of Prissie and her angels. Ms. Kinde gives the reader a book that is paced just right for the young reader. They can be part of the adventure. They will encounter demons, wars, angels, and more. They will encounter a war between the angels and demons. This series is a good, clean series with a big lesson to be learned in an easy way. I must warn you, you will want to read the entire series and even then you won't have enough. Ms. Kinde has shared her talents with all of us, not just the young reader. So gather up the series and start reading. Best if you leave a little time, because once you start you won't want to quit.

I would give this book 4 STARS.

Great Story Line has me hooked!

So, some history on myself: I am an adult who loves to read... therefore, I am approaching this review as an adult reader... and I loved it! My first introduction to Christa Kinde was from reading a free short story - a prequel - and I have since gone back, purchased, and read all 4 actual novels in the Threshold series. I also signed up to read Christa Kinde's daily story line regarding two of the angels -Taweel and Tamaes- these are (very) short chapters -more a paragraph - which she publishes on her personal site every week day.

Now, as to The Broken Window: As I said in my review of The HIdden Deep", I still occasionally found myself irritated at the girl, Prissie, in the story - she is so very human... making human mistakes, and talking like kids talk... - this is why I prefaced this as to reading it as an adult - like in the last book, there were a few too many "obviously" in it for my tastes as an adult, but since it was not written for adults - that is just something to get used to... and Prissie is still kind of mean to a classmate boy- but learning to be nicer - I just wished she would learn a little more quickly, she has compassion for everyone else, but not him...

I heartily enjoyed all the books in the series and recommend reading them in order: The Blue Door, The Hidden Deep, The Broken Window and The Garden Gate. I read the prequels first, and they can be read first or after or in the middle of the series without any problem.

Great book for 11 and 12 year olds learning about faith in God

My daughter is headed for middle school next year so she can definitely relate to Sophie and her concerns about this new "frontier". All the Sophie books are well written and keep us both wanting to read more. This book is no exception. Sophie is learning that being a true friend
sometimes involves sacrificing things that are important to you.
She is also learning that being a Christian means relying on God to guide
you through the "storms" of life. These are lessons that I want my daughter to learn. She's not so interested in devotional books anymore but LOVES stories so this is a great way for us to read and grow together.

This book is good and interesting. About how Kitty gets leukimia and Sophie and the Flakes try to help her. Sophie gives her hair to locks of love and then, to help Kitty not be the only one teased at school, she shaves off her hair completely. This book is a good book for girls 9-12 or so.

A good read for Christian girls

Sophie's Stormy Summer is a nice addition to the Sophie Series. The Sophie Series is about a Christian girl in the public school system. Sophie has many troubles with friends and school problems throughout the series, and she has to rely on God to help her through them. In this book, one of Sophie's friends develops leukemia. The plotline is good, and enforces strong Christian morals. However, some parts seem slightly exagerrated on how Sophie's best friend Fiona is a bit overly dramatic (she seems like a bit of a jerk), and, of course, the snobby girls in the series always act bizarrely cruel. These are minor setbacks, though, and I would encourage anybody who likes the Sophie Series to not miss this volume, even if it is borrowed from the library.

Exercise One: Your Personal Ten Commandments This exercise is designed to help you uncover some of your unspoken rules. It will take about fifteen to twenty minutes. Try to articulate some of the unspoken rules you grew up with. Take your time to think it over. These unspoken rules are generally so ingrained that we are rarely aware of them. Once both of you have articulated your "personal ten commandments," share them with each other. Are there rules you would like to change? To make your unconscious understanding of roles conscious, first indicate how your parents handled these tasks. Then write down how you would like to divide up the tasks, according to your understanding of your own and your wife’s interests, time, and abilities. Finally, compare your list with your wife’s list and discuss the results. Put your final decision of who will do what in the last column, and be prepared to renegotiate when your circumstances change. This exercise will take about thirty minutes.

Easy read w/ valid points//Excerts are from Workbook

First off, the excerpts (table of contents, page and backcover) above are from the workbook, not the book.
The book was a very easy and quick read. I have suggested it to a number of friends as I feel it brings up some valid points and can be used as a spring board to further discussion. Too many people marry without talking about what they are getting into and expecting. The book talks about the myths of marriage, the ebb and flow of relationships, expectations, and ends with a discussion on faith and religion in marriage. That is in the last chapter and can be skipped if you are not religeous and/or shy away from "Christian" stuff. The rest of the book only touches on faith as it relates to the authors description of an event.
The book was written in '95 and mentions much of the relationship self help stuff from that era. The authors are married, and they give examples from thier own marriage, as well as from other couples they have counseled. There are out-quotes, places to pause for discussion, and a few diagrams.
As someone else mentioned, the book does make you feel as if you have to get the workbooks to get a complete picture. You don't. I thought they were overpriced for what they are, although they too can help in discussion, especially if you aren't doing any other than what color flowers to get and what kind of limo you want. The excercises range from really simple ratings (on a scale of 1 to 5, how improtant is the following to you, do alone and compare and discuss) to more time consuming stuff (what unwritten rules do you have?). I found out in one excercie that my honey expects me to do 80% of the childrearing, while I expected we'd be closer to 60/40.
Part of it is intuitive stuff, part of it is stuff that you might think, "I hadn't thought of it that way". If you're reading about this book, congrats and Good luck!

Not worthless, but don't bother buying the workbooks.

This book was recommended to us by several friends and my mother, so we bought and read it. I would have been happier had I borrowed it from the library and not spent the money. It has some good common-sense suggestions to keep a relationship working, but nothing earth-shattering. The only things I found really helpful were the triangular model of relationships and the chapter on ebb and flow. Other than that, if you've taken Psychology 101 this book has nothing new for you. Also, I was very disappointed in the workbooks. The book makes you feel like you are missing out if you don't stop every few paragraphs to do an exercise in the workbook, but the workbook is exceptionally lame and consists mostly of empty lines and questions that are obvious to the reader anyway-- definitely not worth $14 extra. If you want a really fantastic marriage book, try "I Pledge You My Troth" by James Olthuis, if you can find it.

This workbook, along with the main book, are excellent counseling tools for couples engaged or considering marriage. It is also excellent for couples that are already married. It is professionally done, and includes many exercises that help couples communicate their expectations about marriage and eliminate some problems before they begin. It is well worth the money.

About the Author
Laurie's first published work was a note passed to a boy in elementary school. You would have thought that this most embarrassing moment would have stopped her writing career. But instead, Laurie is the author of thirty five books and author/illustrator of two more. Laurie lives in rural Ohio with her husband and two daughters and loves writing surrounded by horses, cattle, dogs, cats, and five turkeys.

Relevant for today's kids

This is a really clever devotional book for the 9-12 crowd. It's relevant for today's tweens. Each devotional is short - just a page and a half, or two pages. Plus, they describe issues that are happening - right now - in the girls' lives, and explains the issues, their feelings, and what the Bible has to say. This would be a great birthday, back-to-school, or Christmas gift. I gave my copy to my 10-year old niece when she was here with us, and I call her every couple of days to make sure she's reading it, and enjoying it. She said that she does read one devotion each day, although she's tempted to read more than one, simply because it's easy to read and easy to like.

Loved it!

I bought this book for my niece but had to read it first and I'm glad I did! Very appropriate for any teenage girl (and even adults!). Well written and kept my attention. I loved it.
