Deeply Disappointed

I bought this to use with our church Youth Group (a combination of Jr. & Sr. High) and was very disappointed. The clips were so much less that what we expected.

For one lesson it was just some teenage boy playing tennis, then twister, then rafting all by himself. This took about four minutes just to get across one little point on community, i.e. we need each other. The point could have been made in about 30 seconds and then could have moved on to something else. It was so slow-moving that we knew we couldn't have used it for our Youth Group. Another lesson was based on an old t.v. clip that our teens wouldn't understand and then spent the whole time talking down to teens like they aren't that bright. For the first four videos I just kept asking my wife, "Do these people even understand teens?"

We did use the final clip on peer pressure and it went over well with the teens, so I will give this product 1 star. However, I really didn't feel that it was worth the money. I still can't believe that this product is endorsed by "Youth Specialties." I hope that they do a better job in the future of really understanding of how to relate with teens.

I fear that the other reviewer of this product missed the point. The videos are short, discussion starters, done in a very tongue-in-cheek, hilarious way. No, they don't give the entire lesson for you - it will require the leader to teach around the video, using it as a starting point for discussion which the accompanying leader guide has well laid out for you. It even has individual plans for each video that are for either middle school age, or high school age.

Stunning!

For yummy eye candy, This is the Day! by Nancy White Carlstrom is a favorite book in our house.

Written in free verse style, this gorgeous volume celebrates Psalm 118:24 ("This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.") by highlighting the beauty and wonder of God's creation. The text is airy, asking us to appreciate some aspect of nature each day of the week:

"Sniff the garden's sweet rose,
and your nose might meet a tiny tree frog.
Clap for the river otter who flaps in water
but waddles across the grass
through cottonwood fuzz,
finding his way from the pond to the bay."

But it's the splendid illustrations by Richard Cowdrey, focusing on breath-taking landscapes and amazing animals, that really makes this book special. Each page brings "ooohs" and "ahhs," from the deer shown nibbling red apples, to the fox eyeing some rabbits, to orca whales playing in the ocean. Even the endpapers, showing a bird's eye view of luscious green islands at sunset, are spectacular.

What I Like: The illustrations in this book are exceptional. My daughter also loves pointing out the blue heron found on every two page spread. The reminder to

"Let all creation lift its voice.
This is the day the Lord has made.
Rejoice! Rejoice!"

is also appreciated.

What I Dislike: For the most part, I find the text a bit fluffy. More substance would make this book a classic.

Loved everything about this book!

I was immediately impressed with this book as I gazed upon beautiful, vibrant illustrations. Each page was brought alive with illustrations so real that I felt I was part of the scene I was viewing. Exceptional.
As I began to read this delightful book I was taken into each day of the week.

Upon my arrival I was encouraged to do an activity like tiptoe out into the morning world and stretch like the deer reaching for an apple high on the golden tree. Or to hum my praise to God with the buzzing bees. How sweet is that?

Yes, inside the pages we as the reader are encouraged to look at our world and join with the creatures there that are busy living their lives in the world that the Lord hath made. The author shows us that each day is a celebration with the Lord enjoying nature and the earth and giving our praise to the One who made it for us. After reading this book I found myself more aware of the beauty that surrounded me and the wonders of this earth. Truly something I needed to remember.

I recommend this book. It will enlighten and encourage readers to open their eyes and their hearts to creation and to realize each day is an opportunity to stop, remember, and give thanks for all the wonders that our Lord has blessed us with, and a reminder to enjoy the gift given to us all. Very well done.

Gorgeous illustrations

This is a lovely book. The illustrations by Richard Cowdrey are absolutely gorgeous! Each page looks like a marvellous painting of God's creation. I have read this book several times to my three kids (ages 2, 5, and 6) and all three enjoyed it. My 2 year old daughter especially liked the pictures and pointing out the various animals that she saw. My sons also enjoyed hearing the words and my eldest liked how each page was for a different day of the week. Reading This is the Day is an excellent way to remind our children, and ourselves, to be thankful for all God has given us in our beautiful world!

Focus to communicate

Ken Davis is an effective communicator. Thankfully, he has harnessed that ability to communicate and created a framework for communication that applies to everyone who desires to become more effective at public speaking.
Using examples, counter-examples, and the S.C.O.R.R.E. preparation method, Davis provides a blunt contrast to typical speaking.
As a public speaker and teacher for over 15 years, I am thankful to have been complimented on my speaking. However, Ken's book and the S.C.O.R.R.E. method (subject, central theme, objective, rationale, resources, and evaluation) have taken my effectiveness (and that of my wife and me as we team teach) to a new plane.
Whether or not you choose to also invest in Ken's seminars and other training venues, I highly recommend this book for those that want to become more dynamic and effective communicators.

An oldie but a goodi

Ken Davis's "Secrets of Dynamic Communication" is an excellent resource mainly for pastors, but it is also beneficial for all people involved in any type of public speaking. The "secret" that Davis reveals is FOCUS. According to Davis, too many messages try to cover too much ground at the same time. To achieve focus, Davis has designed a process he calls "S.C.O.R.R.E.", through which he helps the communicator narrow things down and acheive a clear-cut focus in his/her message.

Davis also includes a few chapters on other aspects of public speaking, like the use of humor, lighting etc, but I found the chapters on focus to be the most rewarding.

As Davis him self admits to in the book, after a while this process gets kind of intuitive, and I guess the experienced communicator won't find many new things in this book. But the SCORRE-method is a great reminder to ALL public communicators - old and new - to stick to one thing at a time.

Well worth the read (and the money)!

Although written for the pastor, this book has great ideas and pointers for any speaker. It also has a little humorous twist which I like a lot.

Sixteen-year-old Scarlett Blaine has her hands full. Both her parents work hard just to put food on the table (though the cooking frequently falls to Scarlett). Her grandfather lives with the family because of his dementia. Her older sister, Juli, is a hippie, and her 10-year-old brother, Cliff, is peculiar—making lists, not wanting to be touched, having spells of silence, and wanting to build a rocket that will take him to Jupiter. To support his dream, Scarlett decides to sell peach pies to help him build it. Handsome, quiet Frank will help, too, and conveniently, his dad owns the peach orchard. Set in rural Georgia in 1969, there are real issues here (many contemporary readers will recognize Cliff’s challenges as Asperger’s) and romance as well. This excellent story about first love, family ties, and what matters most is the second novel by the 17-year-old author of Interrupted (2012). Grades 8-10, --Melissa Moore

Rachel Coker is a homeschool student who lives in Virginia with her parents and two sisters. She has a passion for great books and has been surrounded by them all her life. In fact, as a young child, Rachel helped her parents in a family-run Christian book business. When she is not writing or playing the piano, Rachel enjoys spending time with her family and friends.

A Moving Story About Family

With a heartfelt and heartbreaking look at family, Coker's sophomore novel impressed me even more than her debut release, Interrupted. The setting and plot are unique, the characters' quirks are engaging, and the true-to-life issues are shared in interesting, not-so-common ways.

Scarlett is a heroine whom I often felt I could relate to, with her heart for her family, her uncertainties regarding love, and her struggles with impatience and selfishness. Her story and her growth are enjoyable to watch unfold. Frank, on the other hand, shares a similar "puppy dog" quality with the hero of Interrupted, although I think I do like him better than Sam. His immaturity frustrates me, and his character doesn't really stand out in comparison to some of the other characters who are given more depth (like Grandpop Barley, whose character touched my heart and made it break). However, he is sweet, and his character allows for a bit of romance, which I always enjoy in a book!

I was a bit surprised by how the title of the book and Cliff's (Scarlett's brother's) birthday wish were brought together for the conclusion. Initially, it's hard to imagine how everything could work out... But somehow it does work (although I confess that I'm disappointed by some actions/attitudes that led to a certain horrible event). I am slightly bothered by the focus on the heroine that leaves other characters' stories feeling rather unresolved, but I understand that the reader is limited to Scarlett's perspective because this is supposed to be her story. I guess I just wanted a little more about the whole family in the "epilogue" (of sorts).

All in all, Chasing Jupiter is a story about understanding, sacrifice, tragedies, and hope. It's a story about family, with all of its related fears and fights, as well as its strong bond. A moving read!

Finding God When Life is Hard

Age Appropriate For: 10 and up for some thematic elements.
Best for Ages: 14 - 20

I loved Coker’s first book so much that I went out and paid full price for her second book when it came out. For those of you who don’t know me, this never happens. I normally wait until the price comes down or until I can get it to review. I just don’t have the money to buy books new and fresh off the press. So, as you can tell, I was very excited about the book.
Since I was in the middle of a project when I got the book, I let my younger sister read it first, since she was also a Coker fan. She finished it and said she was disappointed with the book. So, I put off reading the book. When I finally got around to reading it, I went in with low expectations.

Scarlett was just a hard character to connect with; in fact I didn’t until I was about 60% done. After an accident and Scarlet is wondering if her loved one will live or die, I finally found my connection, as I had been through some of the same emotions with one of my siblings. While Scarlett was a well-developed character and well written, most of the time she just seemed distant from the reader.
Coker’s writing was superb in her last book, but it was even better in this one. Her style and way with words is nothing short of being brilliant. I am sure that, with her talent, she will go far in her writing career.

The supporting cast of this book was excellent. Frank was my favorite, the kind animal lover who wants to help Scarlett and Cliff have a wonderful summer. Cliff, a boy who obviously has some sort of mental handicap like down-syndrome, tugged at my heart strings. Her Grandfather made me sad as I thouoght of the wonderful elderly people I have known that have had dementia. Juli was the wild child, but she was still likable.

My favorite part of this book was Scarlett’s talks with the pastor’s wife as she tried to figure out what the purpose of life and hardships are. I felt that Coker did a great job at answering these tough questions, and give real hope, not syrupy answers.

Over all, I recommend this book to those who like historical fiction, great storytelling, and coming-of-age stories.

A Great Second Novel From Coker!

Rachel Coker returns to the fictional scene equipped with an emotion-packed novel that had me glued to the pages!

Chasing Jupiter is her second novel, and I found it to be just as great, if not better than her debut novel, Interrupted: A Life Beyond Words. This time, our setting is in Georgia, 1969 and the central members of our new cast are, Scarlett Blaine, Cliff Blaine, and Frank Leggett.

Scarlett is special, in my opinion. She is able to communicate with Cliff and understand his quirks unlike their parents and the people in their area. She doesn't know why he's the way he is, but she still loves him. She holds so much of the house chores on her shoulders, in this way I can relate to her a bit. I've had a lot of house responsibility on my shoulders before, though not as long as she's had it. At one point, someone asks her why she does so much and she responds with, "Someone has to."

I liked the theme of peaches (peach pie, more peach pie, peach trees, ;D). I don't know why, but I did. I also thoroughly enjoyed the banter between Scarlett and Cliff and occasionally Scarlett and Frank. Rachel does a great job of tossing in enough romance to satisfy her readers, yet keep it to a minimum (no kissing, no dates). That's something I appreciate.

Chasing Jupiter took me off guard more than once with a few twists I hadn't anticipated. I love it when I can't see surprises coming! If you liked her previous work, then you'll surely love this one too.

A light-hearted look at what kids think about Easter.

When it comes to church, kids sometimes think and say the darnedest things. The Tales from the Back Pew series takes a light-hearted look at some of the misconceptions our children may have about church.

In Easter Egg Haunt, the main character is heading over to the Easter egg hunt at church. In preparation, the kids paint all sorts of things on the eggs. After the kids finish the decorating, their Sunday school teacher tells them the real story of Easter. As it turns out, Easter is actually all about Jesus. Eggs and bunnies were added later, much like Santa Claus was added on to Christmas.

Children ages 4-8 and their parents will enjoy the light-hearted fun found in the Tales from the Back Pew series. As you complete each story, you'll be able to talk about the realities of "church life" and how it really isn't as bad as they maybe thought it was at first. Be on the lookout for two new titles in this series (Walking the Plank to the Baptism Tank & The Three Wise Guys), both scheduled to release later this year.

Full of puns and jokes, this cartoon-illustrated book is ideal for a boyish or boisterous sense of humor, as well as for children who are only being introduced to the principles of Christianity in the early grades.

"It's Easter, and our church is going to have an Easter egg hunt. I hope they're not scrambled!" the text begins. Our young male storyteller wonders if the preacher will dress up like a bunny (or maybe Bunzilla or the Easter Mummy), while in Sunday school class, the girls paint flowers on eggs and the boys mostly paint their eggs like clowns. Our storyteller paints his eggs to look like Frankenstein. When the Sunday school teacher suggests this may not quite be in the spirit of Easter, our storyteller asks "What is the spirit of Easter?" The teacher then explains the true story of this holiday.

"Why is it called Easter and not Wester?" our young storyteller asks. "Maybe it's because the Son rises in the east." Then he wonders what Easter really has to do with eggs. "Well," the teacher replies, "the eggs are eggstra. People added them to the Holiday...sort of like Santa Claus was added to Christmas." The same is true with the Easter bunny, he says.

"'So,' I said, 'Easter is really all about Jesus.'
'Like everything else.' My teacher smiled. 'Like everything else.'"

The book also includes three pages of Easter-related riddles and jokes, interspersed throughout the main story of the book.

What I Like: The humor running through this book is the stuff many preschoolers and early graders adore. The illustrations compliment the text so well, one wonders if Mike Thaler and Jared Lee are twins separated at birth. I also appreciate that this book, in quite a succinct manner, tells the biblical story of Jesus' resurrection and explains matter of factly that eggs and Easter bunnies are just fun "eggstras" some people add on.

What I Dislike: It's distracting to read the interspersed riddle pages and all the little dialogue bubbles within the main illustrations. I suggest reading the book without these extras first, then going back and adding the sillier stuff later.

About the Author

Leslie C. Allen is Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary. Formerly he was Lecturer in Hebrew, Aramaic and Judaism at London Bible College. He holds the M.A. degree from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in Classics and Oriental Studies. His Ph.D. is from the University College of London, In Hebrew. Among his publications are The Greek Chronicles Parts 1 and 2 (supplements to Vetus Testamentum) and The Books of Joel, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah for The New International Commentary on the Old Testament, as well as the section on Psalms 101-150 in the Word Biblical Commentary and Psalms in the Word Biblical Themes series.

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984). 

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah. He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

 

Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

Great book about Teenagers actively leading the ministry from within. This book was key in developing our student leadership program a few years back and still plays a big part of what we do today. Definitely a book you want to read if you want those in your youth ministry to be actively serving and leading their peers.

About the Author
Growing up, Rick Osborne really liked Superman. Superman did what was right, he did cool things that other people couldn't do, and he never quit. The Bible is full of great Superman-type stories where God helps good guys battle evil guys with his awesome supernatural help. By telling these stories, Rick loves to help boys see the real-life superhero that God wants each of them to be. Rick lives with his family up north in Canada, closer to where Superman built his fortress.

Ed Strauss lives in British Columbia, Canada, with his wife and three tween-aged children. Ed is a freelance writer with a passion for Biblical apologetics and fantasy fiction. Apart from writing, Ed enjoys biking and exploring nature.

Will Grab Your Son's Attention

This installment of Zonderkids 252 Soul Gear achieves its desired attention of teaching your son about the Bible in a way that is at once entertaining and informatve. This book, aimed at boys ages 8 to 12, addresses the many amazing and unexplainable miracles of the Bible.

Our Kids' reviewer said about this book, "Once again, 2:52 Soul Gear has delivered a great book to boys everywhere. This book shows children all of God's amazing miracles, signs, and wonders. Your child will be so excited when they learn that anything is possible with God, even raiosing the dead and walking on water. My only concern with this book is that the descriptions are a little on the short side, about half a page long. Still, this book will help your boy by showing him miracles like the five loaves and two fish that fed 5000. And remember, this book helps them to "Get Smarter, Stronger, Deeper, and Cooler" as they develop into young men of God."

Some children may want more detail, prompting them to turn to the source, their Bible!

My name is Cami Brasington and I am 12 years old. I have read "Meet Sophie" by Nancy Rue about three times over the last two years.
"Meet Sophie" is a book written by, Nancy Rue, a popular speaker who has written over 100 books. This particular book is about a girl named Sophie LaCroix, and her middle school journey. She has a creative soul with a dream of becoming a serious film director someday. Sophie definitely has a way of creating unforeseen drama! Her ongoing imagination almost always lands her in trouble and unexpected adventure. For instance, when her class visits Williamsburg, Virginia, her creative thoughts lead her away from her group. She soon figures out, she is lost! Sophie knows that prayer is her only hope and in the end her beautiful faith and forever friends - always save the day! Each time I read it I enjoy it even more. I have also recommended it to several friends.
