An artful use of an hour on Sunday

Every pastor responsible for planning and leading a worship service should buy this book, read it, and then do two things. First, find an artist in your congregation who will help you understand how important this book is. Let that artist, or better yet several artists, teach you how the arts can assist you in creating moments of transformation and wonder during that hour on Sunday. Second, honestly respond to the "Questions to Explore" at the end of each chapter. Write out your answers. Discuss them with your staff or leadership team. They are outstanding discussion starters for weekly staff or leadership meetings or even for use in a retreat setting. Dealing with these questions will intensify the impact of this entertaining and informative read.

I read this book from the mindset of a Christian educator who fears that an hour on Sunday is what the average Christian invests in their Christian education. Nancy Beach has provided a timely challenge for we who teach to embrace the value of creativity. She writes from her passion and experience as one dedicated to communicating the truth of God's Word to a culture overwhelmed by information and to generations who learn as much by seeing and experiencing as they do by listening. If you want to make the most of an hour on Sunday you'll be well served by this book.

P.S. If you lead creative people, the bovine metaphor on page 80 is worth the price of the book!

An Hour on Sunday

This is one of the most delightful "how to" books I have read in a long time! This book will help both ministers and lay leaders in the planning of the Sunday morning service. The suggestions given are sound, biblical, and can apply to both a traditional setting or a more contemporary setting. The reader is challenged to make the worship hour on Sunday morning more meaningful by first examining his own heart and motive. The goal is to have the worshiper leave the church changed in a more positive way than when they first came. The advice of this book is both timely and easy to follow.
Many times "how to" books are dry and boring to read. The delivery of the material in this book is as entertaining as it is enlightening. The use of illustrations and drawings are intermingled with the text, many times becoming the text. For example, when the book discusses music, you find the text in a sheet of music, like the lyrics of a song. Humor is very much a part of this book. In the first part of the book, the author gives you permission to skip to a page later in the book if you feel you don't need to read that particular section. When you skip to the page indicated, you are admonished and told to return to the section you wanted to skip. All in good humor, of course. There are also thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter that enable you to celebrate the good things you are currently doing in your organization and encourage you to explore new ground.

Creating significant moments

The potential for moments that matter exists in every church, as we listen for God's guidance, develop our crafts, and pray like crazy for supernatural power to be unleashed, according to Nancy Beach in this book. Nancy is Director of Programming and a teaching pastor at Willow Creek Community Church, a church which has been at the forefront of the use of the arts in services over the past 30 years.

In chapter 8 on Excellence, the author says, "I sometimes allow myself to dream about what would happen if the church once again became known as the place where outstanding art was created for God." In chapter 9, on Creativity, she says, "Our aim should be to create services so compelling, so meaningful, and so unexpected, that the time sails by and attenders leave with an enthusiastic desire to talk about their experience.." In chapter 10 on Authenticity, she says, "If I had to choose just one supreme value, I'd pick authenticity over excellence and creativity simply because the door to attenders' hearts and minds will slam shut the instant they pick up on pretense of any kind."

The book, which is whimsically illustrated throughout, is filled with useful hints and information about how to present church services in ways which will fully engage attenders. I found that reading it all the way through took some effort, but the effort was rewarded. It is the most useful book of its kind that I have read, and I highly recommend it.

Great guide to healthier relationships

This book is an excellent guide to help understand the basics of healthy relationships. The only drawback is if you are unable to see your own flaws then this won't bring about the changes the book is addressing. Some people will need the help of a really insightful, competent counselor.

Handy Set of Tools for Learning Koine Greek with Mounce and BBG Textbook.

This Biblical Greek Survival Kit is intended for use with William Mounce's "Basics of Biblical Greek" (BBG) textbook and workbook for first-year Koine Greek. The Kit includes 1000 vocabulary flash cards, an audio CD of 35 chapters (about 320 words) of vocabulary from the "Basics of Biblical Greek" textbook, and a laminated Study Guide of basic Koine Greek grammar. The Study Guide has 3 holes punched in it for insertion into a 3-ring binder. It lists the alphabet, definite articles, noun inflections and rules, prepositions, pronouns, adjectives, and a lot of verb charts. Some of it could have been labeled better, but it's a handy "cheat sheet" if you're stumped while translating or for a quick review before a test.

The vocabulary flash cards come in a cardboard box. They are 2 x 3 ¼ inches in size, so are meant to be portable. They are not laminated. They're printed on a fairly flimsy white stock, like that of a typical 3 x 5 card. But the content of the cards is well-designed. The Greek word is printed clearly on the front of each card in black ink. This includes the lexical form, genitive, and definite article for nouns. On the back of each card, in gray, are the definition and principle parts of verbs, as well as the BBG chapter number if there is one, the frequency of occurrence in the New Testament, and the card number (1-1000). This makes it easy to put the cards back in order or to review a particular chapter. BBG only contains 320 vocabulary words. The additional 680 cards in this set are words that occur 10 or more times in the New Testament.

The audio CD offers both MP3 and M4B (MP4) formats. They go into Audiobooks in your music player, and each word is a separate file. William Mounce pronounces the word in Greek (Erasmian pronunciation), followed by the definition in English. I wouldn't call this Survival Kit "essential", but it is handy. The only place you can look at the word and hear it pronounced at the same time seems to be the Teknia web site, which I use more than this Kit. But if you would like to listen to your Greek vocabulary lessons on an iPod or other portable device, this is the ticket. If you like flashcards, this is a lot easier than making your own. Actually, the flashcards are useful even if they are not your favorite way to learn vocabulary, because you get every word occurring ten times or more in the NT.

Boy did I need this

I'm taking a greek class now and boy has this helped. And was I in need of help. The flashcards are great if you are not around a computer and the laminated sheets keep the information you need right at your fingertips!

Good Insights Into Billy Graham's Leadership Style and Methods

"The Leadership Secrets of Billy Grahams" contains information on the various styles of leadership by Billy Graham and specific ways he has implemented his leadership. The information is obtained mainly from people who have worked with, have been ministered by, or otherwise somehow positively affected by Billy Graham.

Granted, when I first saw the title I was expecting many quotes from Billy Graham himself. Still, the book is an enjoyable read and contains good information on topics such as:

1. The most effective leader is the one who is most focused and has a clear sense of purpose.
2. Do not let criticism divert you from your purpose.
3. Instead of dominating others, Billy Graham would inspire his team by focusing on the goal of reaching as many people as possible with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
4. Various ways Billy Graham and Martin Luther King displayed courage in spite of fears and opposition.
5. Learn from failure and let it prepare you for future success.
6. Keeping the ego in check.
7. Lead by loving others - even when love must be tough.
8. Various ways Billy Graham has been innovative in communicating the gospel.
9. To make up for his weaknesses, Billy Graham has been willing to learn from others.
10. The best leaders manage themselves best.

Who Knew? Though maybe we should have ....

Billy Graham is not thought of as an organizational leader first and foremost, but then again, without the ability to organize and lead, the message for which he will be known as one of the foremost purveyors of in the 20th century would not have gotten out.

What organizations take for granted today, Graham intuitively seemed to know and understand well before terms such as "team-building and "organizational mission" become catch-phrases.

More than just a study in management though, this book is a study in character and deals not just with the triumphs but also the failures and struggles. In that way it reads as easily and as honestly as the subject matter himself.

Especially helpful are the sections that deal with how crusades and cooperative efforts were accomplished without making key compromises. That is as much an art as any science one could offer.

This book has a lot to offer for ministries and Christian organizations, but the principals hold true in businesses of any size.

Borrow, Don't Buy!

This book alone justifies the existence of libraries: books may be borrowed and not purchased. I received this book as a birthday present recently, and was both impressed and excited by the title. Imagine me, learning the leadership secrets of the foremost evangelist and Evangelical of the 20th century! Alas, the excitement lasted no longer than the table of contents. The authors, both longtime Leadership Magazine editor/publisher types, have used the story of Billy Graham as a springboard for sharing with us THEIR OWN leadership secrets, gleaned from a variety of sources, including Mother Theresa, Mohandas Ghandi, and Abraham Lincoln. Absent from this book are any direct interviews with Dr.Graham, which lead us to believe that this book was undertaken without his consent or cooperation. Because Billy Graham is still alive and well, this is the greatest weakness of the book. The authors could have, and should have had long interviews with Dr. Graham, in which they allowed him to speak directly to the question of his own leadership principles and perspective. Second is the authors' ability to use certain contemporary Christian vocabulary which is shared only by a sub-culture which reads their kinds of books. It is not, unfortunately, written for a wider audience. The third weakness is their failure to demonstrate, in any chapter, why a particular leadership principle is actually a secret of Billy Graham's and not simply something generally recognized by the larger Christian or business community. We get teaspoons of Billy Graham and gallons of everyone else who has spoken or written on the subject of leadership.

If you are really interested in buying a book about Billy Graham, don't buy this one. Use its bibliography in the back to find something better, to include Dr. Graham's autobiography: Just as I Am.

Annie F. Downs is an author and speaker based in Nashville, Tennessee. Flawed but funny, she uses her writing to highlight the everyday goodness of a real and present God. A Great gift for a teen girl in your life

Annie Downs is an author and speaker out in Tennessee. When she’s not working on books, Annie spends her days writing all over the internet- blogging at AnnieBlogs.com and (in)courage- sharing biblical truth about her life as a single Christian woman and the stories that are woven into each day. Annie is the author of two books, both of which are for teens: Perfectly Unique, a spiritual growth book for high school and college girls, and her newest book; Speak Love, a challenge to young girls on how to use their words to make a difference in the world.

The speak love devotional can be used as a companion to the book. It's 30 entries long and it includes lined pages for journaling. Right off the bat, AMAZON has mis-listed this book as "leather bound." AMAZON does this with a lot of Zondervan's books. The cover is actually what the publisher calls Italian Duo-Tone.™ Which is really a "leather-feel" material that is actually a composite of rubber and paper. A true leather bound journal would cost at least $10 more.

Each journal entry has a verse, an application and some truth to speak from the verse and then a short prayer and then what Annie calls a "revolt." The revolts are action steps that the reader can take like "posting a thought to facebook." Each journal entry is about a page and is a quick read.

That said the remaining 126 pages (the book is 208 pages) of the journal is blank lines with scattered inspirational verses for "journaling." It's almost like a spiritual diary. So I would suggest buying the book and journal together and then reading them with each other. This way the teen could process her thoughts AS she's reading and then to use the remaining blank pages as she continues to process the book.

This would make a great gift for that teen girl in your life - it's certainly a message that needs to be said.

Excellent and thought-provoking

Excellent devotional to really get you thinking about the power of your words. It is geared toward teens, so there are phrases like "ask your parents, a teacher, or trusted adult". I am 26 and still loved the book. The message is applicable to any age, but I can see how it would be especially valuable for teenagers. I highly recommend this!

Great for teen girls

I used the 30 day devotional and journal along with the Speak Love book. I think that Annie's message is so important that I started a teen book study. We meet once a week and read a chapter together, then the girls use the journal to write down their thoughts and use the devotionals to start the day out.

As a Christian Education Director, and seminary student in the Episcopal tradition, I can assure you that Case's "The Book of Uncommon Prayer 2" is an amazing liturgical achievement. I recommend it to anyone, regardless of denomination, who is looking to hold meaningful, thought provoking, and spiritually nourishing worship services. Please, don't let the name fool you, this book has application outside the Youth Ministry field, and is helpful in incorporating both ancient and modern methods of worship. The "Good Friday" service is especially profound.

Let's Go Explore Israel is a great resource for kids who want to learn more about Israel. It contains maps, fun facts and wonderful pictures. There is so much to learn from this little book. Adults will even learn something from this book as they read it to younger kids.

Good book, if you're LOOKING for a religious first reader

Like another reviewer, I didn't realize that this was a religious book. There's no indication on the cover, unless you know that the "Zonderkidz" at the top has religious affiliation. The title listed here at Amazon says "Biblical Values" but in a bookstore this book was lumped in with all the other first readers, and "Biblical Values" is NOT on the book's cover.

I think the ending could have been handled differently, because it was a great book up until then. After Maddie wrongly accuses her siblings of stealing her jump rope, her older sister helps Maddie find that it was in her room all along -- and then the story just abruptly ends with the older sister telling Maddie to pray to God for forgiveness? They couldn't have addressed better ways to communicate, asking for help, keeping your room clean so you don't lose your toys in the first place, how to apologize when you've been wrong?

So long story short, if you're WANTING a book that ends with a dictate to "pray to God to forgiveness" then this is a great one. If not, you might want to skip over this one.

This book is scary. I thought it was for my daughter, but when I read it, I discovered it had lessons for me. What a terrific story and teaching tool.
Any parent would benefit from having this wonderful book in their children's library. The art work is adorable and intriguing, but the story is compelling and stimulating. I hope other parents find this book as encouraging and comforting as I did.
This is a great model for other teaching stories that can help parents teach important attitudes and behaviors to our children. Thank you Stacie.

Great book and awesome testimony. Thanks for sharing your story and more importantly thanks for sharing about your weaknesses and struggles with sins. It's encouraging that a "super Christian" (as people who have seen the miraculous and have suffered for Christ appear to be) deals with the same issues we all deal with in the midst of such a wonderful testimony.
