Nice version of the Easter story

Rich Van Pelt trains thousands of educators, counselors and youth workers each year in adolescent crisis intervention and teen suicide prevention and response. His expertise springs from more than three decades of youth and family work, including ten years with incarcerated youth in the Colorado Department of Corrections. He is president of Alongside Consulting, a Denver-based leadership development organization, and is national director of ministry relationships for Compassion International. Often called on to offer counsel and direction after major teen incidents, like the Columbine shootings, Rich is also the author of Intensive Care: Helping Teenagers In Crisis and co-author of The Youth Worker's Guide to Helping Teenagers In Crisis.

Jim Hancock invested two decades as a church-based youth worker. Now he spends his days writing and creating digital movies and learning designs for youth workers, parents, and adolescents. Some Good Information Ruined by the Off-Putting Format

I've been looking for some good resources for our volunteer leaders in student ministry. I downloaded these videos as a possibility for some training. While there are some good points made, particularly about knowing when leaders need to get professional help for students,knowing how to ask good questions, listen well, etc., this series is absolutely ruined by the cheesy animation used when the authors are speaking. There is also way too much time spent on the first-hand accounts from people who experienced issues as teens. A short illustration would be great but they have the same people talking ad nauseam on every video - easily taking up half the running time. Our leaders know the reality of kids' problems, they know how they hide and cover stuff up and how they really want help but pull away when it's offered. There needs to be less exposition of these issues and more help on dealing with it. It would be nice to have a real person speaking, too, not some poorly animated figure. I would never present this series in this format to our leaders. Waste of money.

This is another cute Larryboy book, the fourth in the series, and one of only two books that are based on Larryboy's movies.

The message here is not to be greedy, which I found a very good lesson. You barely walk down the street today and you're bombarded with "you need this" and "you need that" and "you're not cool if you don't have this."

Larryboy is, as usual, trying to save everyone, this time from a "yodelnapper."

She has been kidnapping all the world's greatest yodelers, and forcing them to yodel for her by dumping smelt-flavored pudding (her family's recipe) on their heads.

Larryboy is still cute and funny, and he learns a good lesson in an easy-to-understand way.

I found it kind of annoying that they kept calling the yodelnapper "Greedy Greta." If you've watched the movie, you'll notice her name is Greta Von Gruesome.

However, this is a minor flaw in an otherwise spectaular book.

Better than the movie!

This LB book LarryBoy tries to save Yodelers from a Yodelnapper named "Greedy Greta" (Which I, like the other Kid's Review, found annoying because her real name is Greta Von Gruesome)

This book is better than the movie, because there is actually a part where LarryBoy as noodle blabberbop, "blabs" to the daily bumble, saying that he was a great yodeler on Jupiter (which you should know that he is lying for Jupiter is a gas-planet)

Another thing that makes this one better, is when LB has to fight the Hula-Dolls, he actually tries to capture Greta's so that HE could have so many of them.

I also like how in the book he defets Greta by over-weighing her ship, in the movie he just dumps pudding on her and then plungers her...

Clean Read, But a Little Dry

Katy's Decision by Kim Vogel Sawyer is the fourth and final book in the YA Christian Katy Lambright series. Katy is looking forward to a great summer vacation spent with her best friend, Shelby, at Katy's farm in the Mennonite community. However, their plans are soon cut short when Katy's aunt discovers she has a serious illness. The girls sacrifice their time and efforts to run Katy's aunt's fabric store. Seems boring, right? Think again!

A new Mennonite boy from another community is also spending the summer in Katy's community, complicating things. There are already two guys crushing on Katy, and the newcomer is beginning to confuse Katy about where her heart belongs. Katy is faced with several important dilemmas. Who is the guy for her? Will she give up her education to help out at home or continue following her dreams and disappoint her family? It's not an easy decision.

It was great seeing how the series would end. I've been reading the Katy Lambright series from book one, and it was good to get some closure. I like how the male characters were (for the most part) strong yet sensitive enough to help out and care. There was a feeling of strong family unity in this book, and I really appreciated that.

I wish this series could have ended more significantly. I felt as if this book was more boring than the rest of the series. I had closure, but it wasn't very exciting. Also, a lot of the book was about who Katy would choose instead of whether she would chose to stay in the Mennonite community or not. There really wasn't any big, drastic decision.

Good lessons to be found in this book

Katy's Decision is the fourth book in the series. I have not read the first three and this book can stand alone. Having said that, I am very interested in reading the first three to get a better picture of the main characters life and conflicts. This is a great YA book. The main character, Kathleen Lambright, is an Amish girl that is 17 years old. She has been allowed to attend a public high school and loves journalism. The story shows how she manages to balances her wants with her family's needs. It is a fantastic story of families working together to benefit all. She has worldly friends which is a reminder that our differences shouldn't separate from one another. I throughly enjoyed this book. I was sent this book through Goodreads First Reads.

LOVED THIS SERIES !!!

I have enjoyed this author and picked up the first of this series on my kindle. When I realized this was not "really" for old people I stopped reading briefly...... but came back to it and read all 4 books !!! I loved these books, I felt part of Katy's family and world. I would like to see another 4 books in this series, I said "ah" at the end with a smile, but would love to follow Katy through high school and maybe more??!!! PLEASE Kim and her whoever makes decisions for her !!??

There's nothing not to like! Witty, funny and brilliantly illustrated.

At first glance, you may think this is another book about Joseph. But really it's a completely different story, one of a multi-colored, fancy-diving goat, as told by the comedic duo of Flamingo and Anteater.

Written and illustrated by Cuyler Black, "The Goat of Many Colors" begins with a wealthy landowner named Jacob who owns a lot of goats. Most of them do nothing but eat grass and bump heads, but one of them is special. Gus discovers by accident that he really likes diving. The other goats, however, think he's strange for repeatedly jumping off a cliff into water.

Meanwhile Jacob asks a servant to go get a coat of many colors for this favorite son. The servant misunderstands and thinks Jacob said GOAT instead of coat. Not finding a multi-colored goat, he decides to make one. As the servant attempts to slap paint all over him, Gus runs away into the wilderness where he wakes the next morning surrounded by a herd of wild goats.

Seeing his strange colors the wild goats believe Gus is a special goat sent by God to rule over them. What ensues is a hysterical tale of special gifts, individuality and self-worth.

WHAT I LIKE: Everything! This story is witty and funny. The kids love it! The illustrations are inviting, full of character and color. The text is clear and relatively simple, perfect for emerging readers. There's nothing not to like about this book.

WHAT I DISLIKE: Nothing.

OVERALL RATING: Excellent.

Short & Cute

This is another short, cute and funny book, which sticks with Bible truths but with a sense of humor. The animals are humorous and the text funny BUT the point of the story, to elaborate on God's love, is not lost but instead is right there too. My grandchildren and I chuckled all the way through making it a good purchase for them (it is for a younger reader but works good having them on your lap and being read to!).

Session 1 Andy's parents were getting a divorce. He knew they loved him, and he knew his parents were having a rough time, but Andy didn't understand such a drastic decision. It created so many questions and confusion about God's plan for his life. Andy couldn't imagine that this was what God wanted for his family. He started to doubt God's faithfulness and lose trust in the promises he'd learned as a young Christian. Andy feared he would lose the life he'd always known---and always wanted. It was hard for him to believe that God could work in this situation. Andy asked his small group to pray, and the group dedicated an entire meeting to pray with Andy and talk about his family's circumstances. They discussed the reality of 'storms' that come into our lives and talked about what it means to trust God in difficult times. Andy's small group committed to pray with Andy and ask about his family's situation each week. They stayed by his side during the entire divorce process.20 Through this storm, Andy began to see that God was using his small group to keep him afl oat. It didn't happen overnight, but eventually Andy surrendered his fears and uncertainties to God. When he finally let God deal with his pain, he felt secure that God would care for and love him and his family. Andy learned that when you surrender your life to God, you're able to see God in the midst of the storms---and you realize that he was there the entire time. In this session we'll learn about faith in difficult times. Goal: To share about your life and listen attentively to others, caring about what they share If you're new to this series of books, you'll find that every time you get to the fellowship section, the questions are designed to get you talking and knowing each other better. If you're a veteran of the series (which means that you've been through some of the other books), then you already know what to do. A surrendered life begins with trust---trusting that God is who he says he is even in the midst of life's storms. Different people respond to life's storms in different ways. When you're in a small group, it's helpful to know how each person responds to storms or troubles so you can know how best to help each other. 1. How do you typically respond when trouble hits your life? (Select all that apply.) * I panic. * I worry. * I become emotional. * I try to fix everything. * I handle a quick storm well, but if the painful situation goes on and on, it's really hard for me. * I become hyperactive. He wants us to belong to his family, experience his presence, and fulfill his plans for our lives. God has done everything to make a relationship with him possible. God is the one who created us, loves us, and makes forgiveness available. A central Christian belief is that Jesus died on the cross as payment for our sins. Faith (in Jesus' death and resurrection--- which we'll discuss in session 6) is essential for our relationship with God. Many hazards, storms, and distractions will challenge our faith, but God is always faithful in our time of need. For example, just when the disciples thought Jesus was asleep during their troubles, he showed up in a big way. Read Mark 4:35-41. (If you don't have a Bible, the passage is on page 87.)h a Storm Discipleship: GROWING to Be Like Jesus22 1. Describe the scene by answering the following questions: Who was there? What time of day did this take place? What did the disciples do when the waves started to break over the boat? Why did they respond that way? 2. Why do you think the disciples questioned Jesus' compassion for them? 3. Are you facing any storms in your life right now? If so, how are you relying on Jesus? 4. In your opinion, how is fear an enemy of faith? 5. Why were the disciples still terrified after Jesus calmed the storm (verse 41)? 23 6. Describe what you think a faith-filled response from the disciples would have looked like in the midst of the storm. 7. What happens to you when your faithis hassled by fear or distraction? How does this affect your relationships with other people? With God? 8. Is there anything in your life right now that's distracting you from your faith? If so, what is it? 9. Kenneth L. Barker (PhD, Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning) is an author, lecturer, biblical scholar, and the general editor of the NIV Study Bible.

John R. Kohlenberger III (MA, Western Seminary) is the author or coeditor of more than three dozen biblical reference books and study Bibles, including The Strongest Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, NIV Interlinear Hebrew-English Old Testament, NRSV Concordance Unabridged, Greek-English Concordance to the New Testament, Hebrew-English Concordance to the Old Testament, and the award-winning NIV Exhaustive Concordance and Expositor's Bible Commentary: Abridged Edition. For an abridged commentary its pretty good. I could not afford the complete Old ...

For an abridged commentary its pretty good. I could not afford the complete Old Testament set of The Expositor's Bible Commentary. I have the New Testament Expositor's and you cannot beat it. An excellent source. This OT version chooses the most likely explanation because it unfortunately cannot provide them all at this price but at least it's affordable whereas I could not afford a complete OT set. My advice is if you are a serious scholar or minister of the Bible go for the whole set if you can afford it. You won't be sorry. Otherwise, buy as much as you can unabridged, then be satisfied with the abridged. Replace it when you get the money.

This commentary is fantastic, so easy to understand. It would be great to have the New Testament and the Old Testament in the same book, but I realize that the book would be much to big. Nonetheless, I'm enjoying and expanding my knowledge of the Old Testament. Thank you.

When students participate in short-term mission work, parents and youth leaders hope the experience of serving others will be transformative. But for mission work to make a real impact, leaders and students need to spend more time before, during, and after their service processing and preparing for their experiences. This curriculum and student journal helps leaders prepare students for what to expect on their mission trip, allows students to reflect upon their experiences, and enables them to genuinely debrief. Students will engage in learning exercises that help them gain new insights about themselves, their relationship with God, their teammates, and the world we're called to love and serve. These steps ensure short-term mission work that has a deeper effect on students and on those they serve, and helps students apply what they have learned in the mission field to their own lives. About the Author

Dr. Kara E. Powell is an educator, professor, youth minister, author, and speaker. She is the Executive director of the Fuller Youth Institute and a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary (see www.fulleryouthinstitute.org). Kara also serves as an Advisor to Youth Specialties and currently volunteers in student ministries at Lake Avenue church in Pasadena, CA. She is the author of many books including Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids (with Chap Clark) and Deep Justice Journeys. Kara lives in Pasadena with her husband, Dave, and their children, Nathan, Krista, and Jessica.

Brad M. Griffin is the associate director of the Fuller Youth Institute, where he develops research-based training for youth workers and has co-authored Sticky Faith: Youth Worker Edition and Deep Justice Journeys. A native Kentuckian, Brad now lives in Pasadena with his wife, Missy, and their three children. After more than fifteen years in youth ministry, he now volunteers at his church.

Great Resource for Short-Term Missions

Deep Justice Journeys: 50 Activities to Move From Mission Trips to Missional Living is very comprehensive. It focuses on the importance of framing an experience that is ongoing instead of once and done. In fact, I thought that I was pretty on the ball about thinking missionally instead of mission trip and I was surprised at some of what I encountered. Surprised at how wrong my line of thinking was. There are some great points to be made, especially about when it comes to involving the parents of teens going on the trip. There is even a covenant for parents to sign and adhere to detailing their responsibilities, not the least of which is active prayer for their teen and the group.

But perhaps what I enjoy the most as I leaf through this incredible resource is that is sets up you as the leader to take the learning beyond the week of. Last year we were okay getting ready to go, pretty good on the trip itself with daily meetings and required times in Scripture about serving the least of their fellow humans, but we fell apart when we got back home. Some excitement remained, as more than half of our crew going this year was on last year's trip as well. But this book sets you up to help keep that fire going all year long.

Will this book guarantee your success at keeping teens from getting stuck in the mindset of "we went, we worked, now back to my life"? No. That is on The Holy Spirit (and your efforts when He wants to use you, of course). But this book will give you a lot of very useful tools to help keep that passion burning.

Best Holistic STM Resource

I originally saw this book when a leader of mine used some things from it during a missions trip I was part of a couple of years ago. Since I've been co-leading a trip this year for some youth from our church, I searched around for various books, but I kept coming back to this one.

This book really hits the mark for me. It asks the hard questions of whether we're really making a difference, in both our students and our world--troubling questions that have surfaced from research as short-term missions have exploded over the past few decades. It does not come from an assumption that all missions trips are wonderful and are helping so many people, but rather from an honest perspective that there are real questions we should be asking about how we approach STM.

"As we come to terms with the bad news that our service is more superficial than we would hope, we're all eager for tools that help us make a deeper impact on our kids and our world."

And this is what this book dives into. It begins with some chapters about some best practices for leaders as we walk through this journey with our students or teams. It also has chapters on engaging both parents and the rest of the church (we used 1 idea for engaging our church this year that has gone great--simply, to have members of the church body sign up to pray for 1 student while they are on their trip--it was simple yet effective to get more of the body connected).

It then delves into 3 sections: before (framing), during (experience and reflection), after (initial debrief, followed by ongoing transformation). Within each of these are various activities and discussions to lead your group through, focused on the team, individual relationships with God, and cross-cultural topics.

All of these topics and activities came from both research and leadership summits with experienced leaders. They asked tough questions: How can our service work be part of God's kingdom justice? How do we move service beyond spiritual tourism? What are the most important theological threads that should weave their way through our service? How can we move beyond rhetoric to true partnership with those we're serving? Through that, they came up with activities/discussions that were field tested by youth leaders and their students, then revised and compiled into this wonderful resource.

Hands down, I recommend this book to anyone planning and leading a short term missions trip, even if you're going with a larger organization. It has the flexibility to allow you to choose which activities fit your group the best and what you feel the need to focus on (it's not intended for you to do all of them).
