#Struggles is a game-changer for me

Craig Groeschel’s latest book, #Struggles, has impacted my life so much. I wish everyone in my generation would read it. So often, we struggle with comparing ourselves to others through social media, and #Struggles has really reshaped how I view my use of technology.
From the first page, Craig had my attention — especially with this line: “I have a love-hate relationship with technology. Most of us are well acquainted with this feeling, but we can’t quite put our finger on why. We know we’re obsessed with our devices, but we don’t know how to mange the challenges that come with using them, challenges that continue to multiply. We’re busy, but bored. We’re full, but empty. We’re connected, but lonelier than ever… WE know God intends for us to have something different, something better, something more. But we aren’t sure how to find it.”
One of my favorite points that Craig makes is “Life is not about how many likes you get. It is all about how much love you show.” That quote hit me hard when thinking about how much time I spend on social media.
The book is broken down into eight sections:
1. Recovering Contentment: The Struggle with Comparisons
2. Restoring Intimacy: The Struggle with “Likes”
3. Revealing Authenticity: The Struggle with Control
4. Resurrecting Compassion: The Struggle with Desensitization
5. Reviving Integrity: The Struggle with Secret Impurity
6. Remembering Encouragement: The Struggle with Constant Criticism
7. Reclaiming Worship: The Struggle with Idolatry
8. Replenishing Rest: The Struggle with Constant Distraction
Craig also includes a small section covering his “10 Commandments for Using Social Media and Technology” which I found unique and helpful.
I’ve already recommended this book to many friends, and will continue to tell people about it. Without a doubt, this is a book I will revisit again to help me keep me focused on Christ.

#struggles is both timely and relevant

#struggles is a book on Christian discipleship in a world where technology and social media are getting more attention than ever before. Did you look at your phone the first thing this morning? Was it the last thing you looked at before going to sleep? Have you ever posted on social media and felt the urge to check it a minute later to count the number of "likes?" This book is written for you.
Groeschel knows a thing or two about technology and social media. He is the pastor of LifeChurch.tv, the second largest mega church in the U.S. The church produces the YouVersion Bible app that has been downloaded over 199 million times. He knows technology, uses it well, but provides some counsel on keeping it in check so we don't lose focus on what's most important.
Sometimes our culture celebrates overuse...
Writing this review, I hear a commercial on the radio for a real estate agent where the announcer says doctors had to take her phone away during a stint in the hospital because she refused to stop working. The thrust of the message is that she works so hard you should call her to help with your real estate needs. Is this an example of being on the phone too much?
When was the last time you were more than an arm's reach from a screen? How long did it last before you had anxiety and wanted to check it?
The author admits to having #struggles himself, and gives examples from his own life and others he is acquainted with to make his points. If the end result is bringing more attention to Jesus in a God honoring way, Groeschel will support it. However, if it is a distraction from Him, or worse, he offers guidance to help.
With average users posting 75-80% of their social media content about themselves, it is easy to see how Jesus and other people can be left out of the equation. For Christians, focusing this much attention on oneself is a serious problem.
This book is a very practical guide from an author who is tune with his target audience. For its relevance and timeliness, it receives five stars.

The timing of the message #struggles brings is perfect. It gives practical advice on how to focus on what truly matters in life in the midst of social media. There can be a lot of pressure to post the right pictures with the perfect filter and witty yet original captions. Then when you post your masterpiece, and you don't get as many "likes" as your friend did, you feel rejected and discouraged. Then you take even more time to find the perfect picture next time. You end up missing out on so much of life because you are watching it happen through a lens instead of enjoying it! This book brings real-life truths and advice on how to avoid those traps.
