'Hand of the Morningstar: 'Advent' and 'Resurrection' are good. Very good in fact....Zondervan hasn't skimped on the details....I was pleasantly taken aback as I read through these 2 volumes, in one sitting no less, at how much took me by genuine surprise. I've been reading superheroes from The Big Two for 15 years and am accustomed to deaths, betrayals, and resurrections on a monthly basis, but [writers] Mike Miller and Brett Burner wisely let the reader in on a few secrets at a time. It is a page turner and it's obvious that this series has a few more aces up its sleeve yet....Miller's black and white art is straight forward, but far from bland. He knows what he's doing....There's plenty of action in the story for him to litter each book with power packed fight scenes and buckets of energetic splash pages. The expressions are spot-on, and sometimes the reactions are downright funny. This helps to compliment the script perfectly....There is a great sequence in which Tempest [one of the main characters] is reading the Bible as the words come alive. Jesus has never looked so heroic! To some, this may come across as not too subtle but it contains the gospel message beautifully and I actually found the choice of verses quite moving. There's something in these digests for comics fans, Christians, and those that are both or neither....[T]hese two volumes honestly did captivate me.' (Infuzemag.com)

Bud Rogers is a cartoonist and editor and has been very active in the Christian comics community for the past fifteen years. Bud uses his organizational and management skills to assist artists and writers in realizing their creative visions.

My 14yr old pointed out the evolutionary teaching of the Morningstar series. A Holy Spirit like being states "As man rose from the primordial soup and fought his way through eons of evolution.....

GREAT EVOLVING SERIES!

As the artist on this project I am a bit bias but I just wanted to chime in! This is a series that has great promise. As I've heard from many people, kids and adults, they read these and just can't wait for the next one to come out, seriously it's worse than the Star Wars series when it first came out. (Well, maybe not that bad) But it's a great series with great characters, great REAL characters, who you really get to know and get to take part in their normal everyday struggles, it has great action, solid Christian teachings and themes, a great presentation of the Gospel, and a great evolving story that will keep you glued to the pages. So this story has a lot to offer and a lot to offer in the Christian realm of graphic novels. Christian graphic novels have been around for a little while but these are the first that have been produced on this scale. Zondervan is coming out with 6 different series that will have 8 books in the series each, so it's a big undertaking and from the response they get, it could very well determine the future of Christian graphic novels. So your support is much appreciated!
But trust me this is a great series and it has a plot twisting ending you won't want to miss. I know it will deliver down to the last page!!

Morningstar series, dig a little deeper

These graphic novels have captured my kids interest. They are also subtling teaching us something. Satan is referred to as the star of the morning in Isaiah. I do not believe that the Morningstar is Jesus, but Satan masquerading as an angel of light. I believe that in the books to come Zondervan will reveal this more fully. Clues, such as not praying to Jesus, but Morningstar, evolutionary comments, killing just to kill, these are not how Jesus operates. The missionary & his daughter in Argentina are seeing this also. I love the books,as do my kids, and I believe that it will show us not to just blindly trust in those who claim to be of God.

Gary D. Pratico (ThD, Harvard Divinity School) is senior professor of Old Testament and Hebrew language at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has been teaching Hebrew for more than thirty years and is coauthor with Miles V. Van Pelt of Basics of Basics of Biblical Hebrew (grammar and workbook) and The Vocabulary Guide to Biblical Hebrew.

Miles Van Pelt (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Belcher Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, where he also serves as Academic Dean. This is supposed to be used as a study helper to a text book that I don't own.. however, I have other another book on Hebrew and these goes well with it. The study sheet is helpful and makes a great reference for when Im trying to read and the flash cards are clear and correct. I don't care for the CD much but it is useful if you would like to hear the words being said.

Clark Pinnock graduated from the University of Toronto with a BA in Semitic languages in 1960 and the University of Manchester with a Ph.D. in New Testament in 1963. He has taught at the University of Manchester, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School near Chicago, Regent College in Vancouver, and since 1977 at McMaster Divinity College in Hamilton, Ontario. He is author of a number of books including Flame of Love and A Wideness in God's Mercy He is married to Dorothy and has one married daughter named Sarah.

AN INTERESTING AND CONSTRUCTIVE THEOLOGICAL DIALOGUE

At the moment (July 2010), Clark Pinnock remains a member of the Evangelical Theological Society---though not for lack of opponents. (Famed philosophical apologist Norman Geisler resigned from the ETS after a failure to remove Pinnock and fellow "Open Theist" John Sanders from membership.) Therefore, he can still be considered an "evangelical" as opposed to a "liberal" such as Delwin Brown (author of books such as What Does a Progressive Christian Believe?: A Guide for the Searching, the Open, and the Curious).

Pinnock, has, however, raised controversy in evangelical circles for his advocacy of Open Theism (The Openness of God: A Biblical Challenge to the Traditional Understanding of God); his rejection of Biblical Infallibility (Scripture Principle, The,: Reclaiming the Full Authority of the Bible), and his rejection of the doctrine of Hell (Four Views on Hell).

Pinnock notes in his Introduction to this dialogue, "The major division in modern theology is not between Catholics and Protestants anymore but between liberals and evangelicals.... it is rare for evangelicals and liberals to talk to each other, much less try to understand each other in a sympathetic way." Delwin Brown notes, "The wall that divides liberals and evangelicals in North America still stands, but cracks are appearing. A few Christians are beginning to remove a block or two from the wall, and look across to the other side, and listen to what is being said there."

They cover "Theological Method"; "The Doctrine of God"; "The Doctrine of Human Nature and Sin"; "The Doctrine of Christ"; "The Doctrine of Salvation"; and "The Doctrine of Christian Hope."

One interesting admission from Pinnock: "I was led to question the traditional belief in everlasting conscious torment because of moral revulsion and broader theological considerations, not first of all on scriptural grounds. It just does not make any sense to say that a God of love will torture people forever for sins done in the context of a finite life." (pg. 226)

Pinnock dialogs with everyone except Evangelicals??!?

Interesting that Mr.Pinnock likes dialogs with such aberrant groups like Processists and Liberals. Perhaps they expand his horizons in theological construction and creative doctrinology.
The fruits of such dialogs are apparent in his books like 'Most Moved Mover' (very borderline mormonistic, bi-polar processist);
'Searching for an Adequate God'-a dialog between Openist and Process theories; and this volume, which just goes to show the genuine Evangelical reader how far Mr. Pinnock has departed from Historic Biblical Christianity in his formulations of bizarre, heterodox, aberrant, post-modernist pseudo-didactics.
The reader can only conclude that Mr. Pinnock has no 'openness' for dialogs with Evangelicals. He can only receive new, novel, ground-breaking, cutting edge stimulation from outside the Historic Christian faith. His trajectory would be more accurately characterized as 'Devangelical'.
In his attempt to traverse a crosswalk into frontier territory to find the crossfire, he only stumbles into the crosshairs of anti-evangelical crossbows and the uncharted no-man's land of crosswinds and cross purposes, leaving the Biblical Cross behind

Toddlers Too!

My toddler already has very decided preferences about the books in his basket. If I pick up one that he is not particularly fond of, he closes the cover and peers over my lap to look for the next book. But for books that he likes, he settles back in my lap and listens and looks intently. This book is one of those on the "YES" list. And I'm so thankful. While he is perhaps still too young to understand every one of the words that I'm reading to him as he looks at these happy colorful photos, I am confident that the message is getting through. And the words in this book are truly words that I would choose to remind him that he is loved, he is cherished, he is God's. I look forward to this book growing with my son, and would recommend it for any age child as a happy and affirming reminder of God's presence in his or her world.

Perfect for toddlers to adults!

This book and its companion God Is With Me Through The Night are wonderful, heartwarming stories. These books are a sweet, simple reminder to children of God's unconditional love and protection. Children of all ages can relate to this book as well as adults. We all have fears through the years that change as we grow older. At every age we begin new journeys and experience changes that are challenging and often times scary. When reading this book to a child, it can be a small reminder even to us adults that we should never forget that God is with us each and every day.

I purchased a set of these books for each of my nieces and nephews. Since her birthday in July, my 2 year old niece has been asking for "the God books" at bedtime. Even at her young age she grasps that God watches over us and keeps us safe just like her Mom and Dad. I am thrilled that she is enjoying them so much and know that the message will encourage and comfort her throughout her life.

I do not yet have children of my own, but I know that I will definitely be reading these books to them!
These books will be read in my family for many years to come!

Great even for the youngest "readers"

Using beautiful and fun nature photographs, Julie Cantrell's God is With Me Through the Day is a simple and satisfying picture book.

The text of this volume walks children through a typical day: The child wakes up, stretches, grabs a kiss from mama, and runs outside. Then:

"I start to feel alone. I try to be brave. But sometimes I cry. I feel very small in the great big world."

Then the child remembers God is always with us - just as he was with David when he fought lions, just as he was with Jonah in the big fish. So the child shouts "God loves me!" and "I am safe!" And things don't seem so scary any more. We are never alone.

The book ends by quoting Psalm 56:3 ("When I am afraid, I will trust in you.") This is a great message, but it's the addition of the illustrations that makes this book really special. Throughout are photographs of animals, in fitting "poses" to go with the text. For example, we see a baby monkey clinging to his mother, a raccoon who is looking heavenward, and a penguin mother "kissing" her child.

What I Like: The author's approach to fear is suitable for nearly all children; it focuses on the universal feeling of being alone and afraid. Then the author reminds children they are in God's loving hands and that shouting to the world that they are safe can actually help.

What I Dislike: I strongly wish the author mentioned prayer as a remedy for fear. Also, she writes "God kept Jonah safe inside the whale," when in fact the Bible calls the creature a "great fish," not a whale.

Overall Rating: Very good.

Good little book with Biblical accuracy.

We fished this volume out of a pile on special sale at the super market. We'd never heard of it before and we kept it stored away for the right occasion for a few months. Then the Zacchaeus story came up as one of the lectionary readings for the church year. We have a children's "sermon" every Sunday and reading the story right out of the book seemed appropriate. After hearing the tale read at church, the book was given to our granddaughters (sisters) to be read to them at home. It has been appreciated as they hear it retold and the pictures on the cover showing other books by same author have incited requests for more books in the same vein. We had never heard of Rhonda Gowler Greene, but now see that she has authored a long list of children's books. The pictures are certainly simple and the presentation rather low-key for my tastes, but the kids seem to view it with more relish than I would have expected.

Kohlenberger III (MA, Western Seminary) is the author or coeditor of more than three dozen biblical reference books and study Bibles, including The Strongest Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance of the Bible, NIV Interlinear Hebrew-English Old Testament, NRSV Concordance Unabridged, Greek-English Concordance to the New Testament, Hebrew-English Concordance to the Old Testament, and the award-winning NIV Exhaustive Concordance and Expositor's Bible Commentary: Abridged Edition. My new favorite Bible

Students of the Greek language now have an opportunity to carry a Bible that allows them to read Greek when desired and English when desired. This helpful tool enables the student to bring a Greek New Testament to worship services, Sunday school classes, and Bible studies without running into Greek passages that are too difficult to figure out in the moment. Whereas interlinears make it too easy for the Greek student to rely on the English in front of them, a diglot such as this one places the Greek on left page with the English on the right page so that the student is looking just at the Greek text until the English is absolutely needed. A helpful Greek-English dictionary is given in the back, with the number of NT occurrences of a word and a few Bible references given for each word. This can help the student decide when he/she looks up a word how important it is to remember this word in the future.

No critical apparatus is given, and the Greek text differs from UBS at a number of points, but a footnote is given each time there is disagreement with UBS on a text-critical issue. (The most common disagreement seems to be the decision not to put a word in brackets as the UBS does, but each instance of this is noted.) The English text is the 2011 NIV, which is inferior to a number of other English translations, especially if the reader is looking for a literal rendering of the Greek text, but as long as the reader is aware of this it is a minor concern. With the Greek text in front of you, hopefully you'll notice where the NIV goes astray and perhaps be made even more aware of the richness of the passage in Greek.

I also own Crossway's Greek-English New Testament. One would think with the critical apparatus and the use of a more literal translation (ESV) that I would use it more, but Crossway made the unfortunate decision to use such a large font that the average page includes little more than 10 verses, so the volume is twice as thick and not as convenient to carry around or to skim read when looking for a verse. Since getting Zondervan's version I have barely used my Crossway diglot (which I purchased only two months earlier).

Obviously the biggest disadvantage is that if this becomes your main Bible it is missing 39 books! Unless you attend a Marcionite church, you will now need to carry two separate Bibles - an Old Testament and a New Testament. In my opinion this is a small price to pay for so helpful a tool. Your knowledge of Greek and of the New Testament passages you read will greatly improve as you use this text, and the convenience of the diglot model will encourage you to use this text. It comes highly recommended!

NIV Greek NT

Greek students of the New Testament have had a wealth of resources in the past couple of years. Zondervan has provided many of these resources including the many Greek resources of Bill Mounce, Interlinears, Lexicons, and Greek and English New Testaments. Zondervan has recently released this Greek and English New Testament which contains the SBL Greek New Testament side by side with the NIV 2011 New Testament.

While I do have certain problems with the 2011 NIV revision, nevertheless, this is a useful resource for comparing the Greek text with the English translation. A few notes about this Greek text: This is the Greek New Testament produced by the Society for Biblical Literature (also known as the SBL text) and is very similar to the UBS4 and NA27. This text does note divergences from the UBS4 and NA27 in the text but in general there are few differences and this text is much closer to the critical text editions than it is to the Majority Text or Textus Receptus. While I am personally favorable towards the Majority Text, this is still a useful resource for the discerning student who is aware of some of these differences.

This text also contains a condensed lexicon based on Mounce's dictionary designed for quick reference. While this lexicon is no replacement for a real Greek lexicon like Bauer, it is good for quick reference when this book is all that one has in front of them. The lexicon does not pretend to be a substitute to a "real" lexicon but it is still helpful as a quick reference.

As far as the English text, it is the 2011 revision of the NIV. This revision has its benefits and disadvantages. There are very real improvements over the original 1984 NIV but the update to some of the gender language bringing the NIV into closer conformity to the NRSV and TNIV is objectionable. Again, if the student is discerning, then these issues can be dealt with.

The book itself is quite beautiful in terms of its font type. The font size is very readable and clean looking both in the Greek and English. The English text footnotes OT references which are also very helpful. This book is also bound very well and should last a long time.

This is a great Greek-English New Testament for general reading. Thank you to Zondervan for providing me with a review copy.

Readable and attractive format

If you're looking for a helpful and beautiful parallel page Greek and NIV, you've got it in this usable edition. I love the font sizes and single column page layout. Just enough textual help that doesn't displace the need other critical editions. On the whole, highly recommended!

Debbie Viguié has been writing for most of her life and holds a degree in creative writing from U.C. Davis. Debbie loves theme parks and has worked at both Knott’s Berry Farm and Disneyland in California. When Debbie is not busy writing she enjoys traveling with her husband Scott. Debbie grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and now lives in Hawaii.

Last in Sweet Seasons series ends it right

The Spring of Candy Apples by Debbie Viguie is the fourth and final (no! say it ain't so!) book in the Sweet Seasons series about high school senior Candy Thompson. Candy is back working at The Zone, an amusement park, but now she's a long term employee and learning the ropes as a referee. She's on pins and needles waiting to see if she wins a scholarship from The Zone, and her relationship with Kurt is on the rocks. I have really enjoyed following the adventures of Candy and The Zone gang. Viguie has really brought to life the entire amusement park and filled it with a vital and interesting cast of characters. Candy's faith and trusting in God has grown throughout the series as she also learns to trust herself and let herself shine. She finally figures out what fans have always known about her and Josh, and the series ends on a high note. I do hope that Viguie isn't finished with Candy and will follow her through her college years. This is one character I'm not ready to say good-bye to.

A Sweet Ending

The Sweet Seasons series has been one of my favorite YA series from the time I picked up the first book. Debbie Viguie writes in a perfect teen voice and really gets you into the story. There's no label dropping and teens come across as very real. It's also one of the funniest and just plain enjoyable YA series that's out there. It's Christian YA but it's not preachy at all.

This book features Candace in her last season working at The Zone amusement park. She's been working there for almost a year and it's about time for her to leave not only the park but make plans to leave for college as well. This time the mission for the park's employees is to put on a talent show. While this may sound boring, the results definitely are not and it's a hoot watching Candace's group perfect their talent. And then of course, there are new things to discover about the The Zone which is always really exciting to read about. I think that these kids have the best job a high schooler could ever have.

I don't want to spoil the story about who Candace ends up with but let's just say I was super geeked and it was done absolutely perfect. Honestly I really can't find any fault with this book other than I'm really sad that this is the final book of the series. I've grown to love Candace and the gang at the Zone. I loved reading about their adventures in the park and seeing how the characters have grown and matured over the past year. I totally wish that The Zone amusement park existed in real life. It is pretty much the theme park of my dreams. If you're looking for some fun light YA reading, this series is definitely for you. HIGHLY recommended.

Spring of Candy Apples ~ Simply Delicious!

Perfect for : The young adult in your life.

In a nutshell: This is a wonderfully inspirational series written for teen girls - but is even a fun read for adults! This is the fourth book of the Sweet Seasons series by Debbie Viguie - now that all four seasons have been covered, I hope Debbie finds a way to continue following Candy and her friends as they go off to college. In this book, we return to see more of Candy's life as she experiences all the teen things: friendships, romance issues, school (and dealing with college applications and scholarships), work, thinking about the future and faith!

Extended Review:
Characters: I have really enjoyed reading about Candy, Tamara, Kurt, Josh, etc. I love that Debbie has given them REAL teen-sounding dialogue, I can see my niece relating to them with no problem!

Story-Line: There is no preaching in this book, but rather, Candy is gently guided through life with a focus on values and faith. She is a typical teen, facing many challenges (Is Kurt the right boyfriend, could she go to school far away)

Readability: A fun and easy read that will hold your attention and provide inspiration.

Overall: A wonderful addition to an already great series. I highly recommend this book to any parents looking for some good reading for their teen daughters (nieces, grand-daughters, etc).

Combining self-help with devotional guidance, this collection of suggested responses to dozens of problems about which many young adolescent girls are concerned is up-to-date and accessible. Ninety scenarios (called devotions) are presented with a uniform layout: a two-page narrative sketch of a girl with a specific issue, bracketed by thematic biblical quotes; a suggested prayer and a journal prompt; practical steps to take; a quote—credible but not cited—from a real girl noting how she felt about having the problem herself; and indexing terms that demonstrate how scenario and advice could be helpful for several kinds of situations, such as anger, confusion, disappointment or alcoholism, death, overloaded. Although the devotionals themselves are couched in religious terms and some have specific evangelical contexts, the list of resources appended is nonsecular—including phone numbers and websites for Al-Anon and national child-abuse, suicide, drug-abuse, and domestic-violence hotlines—and many of the proposed practical-action steps would be sound for anyone facing such issues to consider. Faithful to Scripture and written with empathy for hurting teens.

I just happened to pick this book up when looking for something to give to a 13 year old girl who just gave her heart to Jesus. Each devotion begins with a short story describing a situation that presents a moral question or decision. The young teens face tough choices but find practical answers in God's word. Each devotion is followed by a relevant Bible verse, a sample prayer, original ideas for writing a journal, a list of actions to put the devotion into practice and finally a "real girl confession" that acknowledges the normal response to stress and difficulties that teens often face. This is perfect for teens that are experiencing family turmoil through relocation, disappointment, peer pressure, health crisis or the death of a family member. I liked that the devotions addressed solutions to fears and anxieties that can be applied to deeper wounds without exposing pre-teens to issues that they have not encountered. The author packed a lot into a small book, with an explanation of the Four Spiritual Laws to the Kugler-Ross stages of grief. The devotions offer advice on how to respond to peer pressure, how to set personal boundaries, how to pray for friends, and how to get along with siblings.
