Bud Rogers is a cartoonist and editor and has been very active in the Christian comics community for the past fifteen years. Bud uses his organizational and management skills to assist artists and writers in realizing their creative visions.

Rob Corley is a veteran animator with Disney, San Marco Films, and Curious Pictures. Rob is also the cofounder Funnypages Productions, an animation development and illustration company, and Funnypages Press, a comic book publisher.

Tom Bancroft is a veteran Disney and Big Idea animator. While with Big Idea, he designed and directed the LarryBoy series of videos. Tom still keeps his hands in animation, but he also enjoys creating comics.

They stayed to make sure they had plenty of time to talk to students and to clean the youth room. When Candice asked them what time they finally got home after church, she was surprised at the answer: After 5 p.m.! Candice was fl oored---youth group ended at noon. She knew they stayed longer because they loved her and her fellow students, but she thought others should share some of the burden to clean up so her youth pastor and family could get home earlier. She came up with the idea of recruiting a team of students to help clean the youth room while others were hanging out and talking. But Candice found her leadership task a difficult one. Most of the students had great excuses, saying there were other things they needed to do. So Candice cleaned the youth room by herself for the first month---until two other girls volunteered to help out. For a few months the three of them cleaned and organized the room. The thankful response from the youth pastor and his family kept them encouraged. After several months of consistent cleaning, a few more students began to participate in this new clean-up ministry. Candice was thrilled that others finally saw the need and responded by jumping in and serving. Now everyone gets home a lot earlier. Serving is often anything but glamorous. No one loves picking up trash, stacking chairs, or putting things away. It's easy to view service jobs as beneath us---but they're not. In this session you'll see that no act of service is beneath you if you've acquired the servant heart of Jesus. Goal: To share about your life and listen attentively to others, caring about what they share If you're new to this series of books, you'll find that every time you get to the fellowship section, the questions are designed to get you talking and knowing each other better. If you're a veteran of the series (which means that you've been through some of the other books), then you already know what to do. 1. Do you know someone who is considered successful in the eyes of the world? What makes this person successful? 2. What is it about serving that makes it so difficult sometimes? Goal: To explore God's Word, gain biblical knowledge, and make personal applications Fellowship: CONNECTING Your Heart to Others' Discipleship: GROWING to Be Like Jesus No one wakes up in the morning saying, 'I hope my life amounts to nothing and that I never make any kind of significant impact.' Everyone is wired with some desire to succeed at something. But while our world tells us to be 'number one,' it also says that we have to look out for 'number one' to get there. Many follow this path, but it doesn't deliver fulfillment. You're about to read a shocking and powerful teaching from Jesus. With just a few words, Jesus turns everything upside down, challenging everything we instinctively believe to be true about success and greatness. Read Mark 10:36-45. (If you don't have a Bible, the passage is on page 87.) 1. Why do you think James and John ask Jesus their question in verse 36? What do you think prompted them? 2. Why didn't Jesus grant their request? 3. Why do you think the other disciples were bothered ('became indignant') by their desire for greatness? 4. What do you think was wrong with James and John--- their desire for greatness or their understanding of what true greatness is? Explain your position and use the Bible passage to support your answer. 5. Respond to this statement: 'The drive for greatness isn't as important as one's definition of greatness.'serve your way to success 6. This passage begins with a bold statement from James and John and may be something of a shock to read. Do you ever feel like you take this attitude with your prayer life---that is, do you boldly ask God for what you want or need? This may be a tough question to answer, but be honest. 7. Did Jesus ridicule James and John for making such a request? Why do you think God says 'no' to some of our prayer requests? 8. Why isn't servanthood attractive in our world? In the church? 9. Why do you think Jesus teaches that servanthood is the true path to success? 10. Read verse 45 again. What does it tell you about Jesus' character? Goal: To recognize and take advantage of opportunities to serve others In the previous passage, Jesus emphasized both humility and sacrifice. Humility doesn't mean thinking badly of yourself; it simply means you put others first and don't think of yourself more highly than you should. Sacrifice, on the other hand, is something you do for others---and there's always a cost attached. Humility and sacrifice may be hard for you right now, but they become more natural as you learn to see life through Jesus' eyes and start putting them into practice. Ministry: SERVING Others in Love 1. How do you usually treat people who serve you? (Think about restaurant workers, store clerks, family members, janitors, and so on.) 2. Give examples of how you might 'lord it over them' (Mark 10:42). Goal: To consider how the truths from this session might be applied to your relationships with unbelievers 1. Discuss the following story. How can acts of service become acts of evangelism? The Fourth of July in one California beach city meant hundreds of celebrating visitors. By the next morning, trash always littered the streets. Evan decided that it would be great for his youth group to serve the town by picking up the trash. Soon other groups within his church learned about his idea and decided to join in. On the fifth of July, almost 100 people were on the beach and wandering through town, picking up and bagging garbage.

they say that there are two kinds of books, the books of the day and the books of all times. This is one of the latter. The immortal words of Charles White have changed my life. Not a year goes by in which my fingers don't itch to pick up this old friend and thumb through it's familiar pages, enjoying the wisdom therin.

It was also an excellent reference source. It was well researched, concise and written elegently. Dr. White is a giant in his field and I also heard that he ran around the world. I can't verify this fact because I wasn't there but my friend Hugh has a T-shirt supporting this claim.

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

First, I need to express my absolute disappointment, as a MOPS member, about this literature being promoted by a well-known and absolutely wonderful Christian organization and that I am, perhaps, even more concerned that such literature was written, and therefore reveals the theology and beliefs of their president Mandy Arioto.

As I read Starry-Eyed, I kept a tally of how many times Mandy mentions other religions or spiritual practices and gives them credence, versus how many times she refers to Jesus Christ and the Gospel. My count of the first came to 11 including Celtic Spirituality, Christian Mysticism, the Winter Solstice, Chinese Medicine, and Neo-Freudian Psychology. While she mentions Jesus by name more times than 11 (but not many more!), Mandy NEVER presents a clear gospel message. And when she does refer to the crucifixion, she never uses His name, nor does she tell the whole story, giving the reader an understanding of what Jesus' death and resurrection means for her (which is imperative considering what Arioto claims this book will provide to the weary mother). This was, by far, my most major concern.

This book reeks of Emergent theology, where truth is relative, Universalism trumps scripture and sin need not be mentioned or dealt with. When referring to the Bible, she writes that it "is considered God-breathed" but not that it actually is. This provides plenty of wriggle room to apply scripture as she wishes rather than discerning passages in context, which is done only on occasion. (Very little scripture is actually used or referred to).

Mandy continuously defends darkness, even equating it to rest (as opposed to JESUS who is the Light (John 8:12) and our Rest (Matt 11:28)), claims that we are all made of star stuff, quotes well-known Emergent leaders like Rob Bell, Anne Lamott and Shauna Niequist, encourages readers to simply say things out loud to resolve them rather than repent of sin (pg. 156), and promotes the authority of feelings, dreams and "questing" over the authority of scripture, seeking wise counsel and prayer. In fact, she even explains why she and her husband have purposely chosen not to study the bible as a family, with her children. But then goes on to say that she wants her kids to follow Jesus' voice (pg 165) and hear the inaudible voice of God (pg. 166). But HOW can anyone know God and His voice if there is not an emphasis on the study of His Word? Instead, only encouragement to pray for dreams to provide answers (pg. 180) and to be open to letting yourself be guided (pg. 182) is given. Both dangerous and not based in scripture.

Overall, this book is a wolf in sheep's clothing. As Christians we are called to be on the look out for false teachers (2 Peter 2). Well ladies, look no further. Starry-Eyed is void of the Jesus of scripture and His gospel. The summary claims that this book is "always unflinchingly honest" and if that is the case, I have great concern over the future direction of MOPS Inc. with Mandy Arioto as President, considering what she has presented in her book.

If you do read it, I encourage you to be incredibly discerning and be like a Berean (Acts 17:11). Check everything against the Word of God. And don't expect to find Christ on the pages of this book.

Not Biblically Sound

This book is void of the gospel. While she recounts story after story that many moms, including myself, will find relatable, she does nothing to point them to the hope of Christ. She does, however, point to practices found in many other religions and thought systems throughout the world including mysticism, Celtic spirituality, modern psychology, mythology, and the like. Arioto quotes well-known scientist Carl Sagan in an attempt to prove our connection to the cosmos. Sagan was also known for expressing a strong sentiment against both God and religion and was a self-described agnostic.

I am saddened and disappointed that this book has been promoted and distributed by a Christian organization. If you are looking for a book on motherhood that will direct you to the gospel, I would recommend Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full by Gloria Furman.

Beware Young Mothers

The writings in this book are higly relatable for the young Moms it was written for. But that is where the greatest danger lies. Young readers might not have the background to discern the subtle but constant references to mysticism, humanism and new age religions. Carl Jung, Carl Sagan and others who have been hostile toward Christianity are quoted & esteemed. A Christian world-view is decidedly absent. When Scripture is mentioned it is not properly referenced nor explained. It is a hodge-Podge of belief systems. Mama, if you need a Christian book on mothering there are better books out there! Where were the Advisors at Mops International when this book was approved?

About the Author

Mark Matlock has been working with youth pastors, students, and parents for more than two decades. He’s the Executive director of Youth Specialties and founder of WisdomWorks Ministries and PlanetWisdom. He’s the author of several books including The Wisdom On series, Living a Life That Matters, Don’t Buy the Lie, and Raising Wise Children. Mark lives in Texas with his wife, Jade, and their two teenage children.

Christopher Lyon is a writer, editor, web content manger and pastor – but rarely all at once.  Mostly he looks for creative ways to teach and write about the Bible for other people like him who are trying to figure out what to do about it,. Great Resource on Cultivating Parent-Child Relationships

In RAISING WISE CHILDREN youth ministry expert gave some insightful tips on how to mediate wisdom to your children. IDEAS FOR PARENTS expands on the ideas presented in the first book, giving very practical ideas on how parents can develop meaningful, deep, and enduring relationships with their children. I can really appreciate the goal of this book because I have three children who are very young, and my wife and I want our relationships with them to be the most impactful they can be. We want to follow Jesus in a way that causes them to want to follow Jesus.

Relationships are formed and cultivated by the time we spend together, and this book seeks to make those times as meaningful and intentional as possible. Therefore, the book gives several ideas for activities parents and children can do together and talking points they can discuss together. The book is broken up into sections such as family relationships, school, media choices, discipleship, etc. Each section starts with a short essay or interview by well-respected youth ministry leaders.

IDEAS FOR PARENTS is a great resource for parents to be intentional about their relationships with their children. Coupled with RAISING WISE CHILDREN, these two books will greatly help in raising children who love Jesus and live wisely as he did.

Protestant: Maybe, Catholic: No

This book is a part of a series of biographies on heroes of the Bible. Published by Zondervan, Mary by Nancy I Sanders is a well organized and well illustrated book for elementary ages. It has a reading level of 2.1-2.5 and is full of beautiful illustrations, maps, and fun facts about the culture and times in which Mary lived. It really read like a biography of Mary, with information filled in from biblical context and other historical resources.

Overall I loved the layout of this book and would be interested to see more of the titles from this series. I hesitate to recommend this title, however, because of a few specific concerns.

First of all, the book is not well referenced. Bible passages are paraphrased and some have direct links to quotations, but others do not. The same translation is not used consistently. I was particularly bothered by the references to Mary's daughters, Jesus' sisters. While the Bible does refer to Jesus' brothers, and there is debate amongst Catholic and Protestant Christians if this is a spiritual brother or biological brother or cousins, I am aware of no reference that refers to sisters. Maybe it is nice and cutesy to think of a happy large family, but the existence of sisters is certainly not a fact (Biblical or otherwise). I wouldn't want to confuse kids with that perception hidden among other information, however accurate the other information is. When I find glaring misquotes such as this, I tend to be wary of the rest of the information no matter how good it sounds.

Second of all, the book is full of beautiful artwork and images that are all referenced to shutterstock or other online image galleries. I would have loved to have a specific reference to which artist painted each image. Some of them I knew, but others were clearly works of art that came without a reference. I think it was a disservice to the children who read this book not to include the proper sourcing. Mary has been well documented historically in art and there is no good reason to not give those artists credit for their work!

Overall thoughts? Definitely recommend for my protestant friends as one of the most thorough (even if not most accurate) biographies on Mary I have seen, even though I find it pulls up short of embracing the entirety of Mary's divine nature. Definitely do not recommend for my Catholic friends, however, as this will probably confuse your children in light of what our Church teaches regarding the divinity of the Blessed Mother. I was surprised to see how many of the reviewers noted how it would be a perfect first communion gift or resource for a Catholic school project. In fact, if not for those reviews I never would have selected this book for review in the first place!

This book is about Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The book is dedicated to: Gertrude Toppin- at 94 the sweetness of Christ from your ever-present smile just as brightly as ever!

There is a Table of Contents which has 12 chapters, Timeline of Mary, Glossary, Selected Bibliography, Source Notes, Student Resources, About the Author.

The chapters are: A Daughter in the House of Jacob, Engaged to Be Married, Birth of the Firstborn Son, The Newborn King, The Town of Nazareth, Mary and Joseph's Home, Sharing Faith with Her Family, Holidays are Holy Days, Life and Death, Dealing with the Messiah, At the Cross and A New Beginning.

Get to Know Mary in the first chapter has Mary as a young girl. It gives the reader information of what life was like during this time.
Some facts about the Jewish people at this time are some poor people lived in caves; there were different coins, Jewish, Romans and Greek; a large stone jar weighed about 1000 pounds; there are seven main Jewish Holidays or Feasts, the marketplace could be on any day except the Sabbath and in Jewish tradition, a new day started at sunset and lasted until sunset the next day.

Get to Know This Book has features that are circles and inside the circle a symbol such as an oil lamp or scroll. They are: Scripture, look for an oil lamp to read a Scripture from the Bible ; Bible Hero, look for a sandal for information about a Bible hero; Eyewitness Account, look for picture of an eye each time someone who saw what happened tells about it; Did You Know?, look for a clay jar to learn fun facts; and Word Bank, look for a scroll to learn the meanings of new words. It is a great teaching method for the children and also adults.

I learned quite a bit of the Jewish people. It is a good book for young people. I suggest reading a chapter at a time.

There are maps and pictures which are always appreciated by this reader.

Realistic and interesting

Get to Know Mary: A Full-color Biography for Kids by Nancy I. Sanders offers a way for kids to get to learn about this very important mother and woman in history.

What I liked the most about the content of the book was that it wasn't sensational and that it was fairly realistic about the times. There is also artwork commemorating special parts of her life.

The book is aimed at kids ages 8 to 10 or so, or a 3rd to 5th grade reading level. There is a word bank, maps and facts as well as references to scripture.

I think this book would be nice for Christian homeschooling families or as a stocking stuffer or Easter basket stuffer.

The only thing I didn't care for in the book doesn't have anything to do with the content- just the center justification of each line of text. I prefer left-justified because it's easier for me to read.
