Growing up, Rick Osborne really liked Superman. Superman did what was right, he did cool things that other people couldn’t do, and he never quit. The Bible is full of great Superman-type stories where God helps good guys battle evil guys with his awesome supernatural help. By telling these stories, Rick loves to help boys see the real-life superhero that God wants each of them to be. Rick lives with his family up north in Canada, closer to where Superman built his fortress.

Marnie Wooding has written over a dozen books and is pleased to be a Zonderkidz author. Action packed book with get your boy interested in the Bible
By Lisa M. Hendey
Part of Zonderkids exciting new 252 series, this book approaches Bible knowledge in a way that will appeal to boys between the ages of 7 and 13. Filled with action and interesting pictures, the book profiles the wars, battles and weapons which fill the pages of the Bible. Special consideration is given to a unique battle - the battle between good and evil.

Our children's reviewer at CatholicMom.com kids reviews gave this book a ranking of four stars, stating "Hot Pursuit. Battle Cries. Secret Plans. The Thunder of Chariots. What could be more exciting to a boy? In this book, boys can find out about all the adventure in the Bible. If your chld thinks that the Bible is just a boring book of people wanting to be holy, this will prove them wrong. Action packed illustrations and maps along with easy-to-read stories show children battles like the Siege of Jericho and the Battle of Ai. Also, this book covers a different kind of war: the fight between God and the devil whenever you have to make a hard decision. This book encourages you to "Get Smarter, Stronger, Deeper, and Cooler" in your faith. In short: buy this book for your action-craving child."

Tries too hard to be cool
By Monika Plume
I bought this because I like the idea of books about the Bible that appeal to boys instead of Christianity always being about the soft, gentle side of things. I read one page of it to my son and got rid of it. The whole demeanor of it is just trying too hard to be cool and conversational, at the expense of something real and interesting and meaningful. It's not that I have a problem with people doing something fun with books about the Bible (check out Hey! That's Not What the Bible Says! and Mike Thaler's excellent series), there just isn't much substance here.

Perfect for young boys!
By Tanya Dennis
My nephew (almost 8 years old) loves this book! I gave this and Weird & Gross Bible Stuff to him for Christmas. He read both quickly and thoroughly enjoyed them. He is using his own money to purchase more books in this series.

The format is great. Features include:

- short chapters with kid-friendly language and enthusiasm
- comic-book-like illustrations with bold lines
- illustrated storyboards
- maps of Biblical battles
- details of weapons used
- key characters highlighted in detail
- relevant links to boys' lives today
- Bible references so readers can cross-reference this information with Scripture

Most importantly, the information is accurate and interactive. The authors offer applications with several of the stories encouraging readers to internalize the lessons of these Biblical truths.

Highly recommended.

Consuming Youth: Leading Teens Through Consumer Culture (YS Academic), by John Berard, James Penner, Rick Bartlett

Today's relentless, consumer culture--dominated by popular media's emphasis on bigger, better, and more, and catering to teenagers' every want and desire--is leaving our youth adrift in a sea of conflicting messages. Messages that youth workers and faith communities need to decode and redirect from consumption as the primary purpose of youth.

Consuming Youth explores the shifts needed to move  from the fragmented, isolated and consumer driven story for youth and towards a more compelling story of meaning, purpose and a life lived differently than the one served up by consumer culture.

If you're involved in the lives of teenagers, whether as a youth pastor, youth worker, volunteer, church leader, parent, or students of youth ministry, you'll want to read this book to discover how a culturally invented and socially accepted version of adolescence sustained by consumer culture has shaped youth work and through the suggestions offered work together to discover ways in which you can re-imagine youth ministry and what it means to be a teenager.

Messages that every youth worker must be able to decode and redirect away from the material world towards helping young people become who God created them to be: givers instead of receivers, servers instead of consumers. Consuming Youth is for any adult who recognizes that following Jesus means leading young people through the pitfalls of consumer culture, helping them discover vocation---where their great gladness meets a world's great need, and unleashing the kingdom of God on earth.

Good Analysis of Youth "stuck in limbo" and "shaped by consumption" with Healthy proposal for new Ideology of Youth
By Philip G Neufeld
I was fortunate enough to break open Consuming Youth recently. And in return I was challenged by prophetic wisdom and offered a vision for a new way forward.

I'm a parent of an 18 year old young son and two daughters aged 14 and 11. I've coached and taught Sunday school but I've never been deeply involved in traditional youth ministries. I've served for 8 years on a fast growing school district's Foundation. And I manage information technology at a university during the day.

I would highly recommend this book to parents and adults as one of the best resources I've come across on parenting and mentoring. The authors help us understand how we arrived at the creation of adolescence and the experience of "teenager". This invention of the life stage between childhood and adulthood began 150 years ago and this invented life experience is now more fully developed. Then churches, culture and corporations have whispered into youth that they do not fully belong, cannot really understand and cannot fully participate in the adult world. The authors argue that we have bought into a culturally accepted version of adolescence that allows the consumer-driven market economy to shape our youth. The authors walk us through the historical development looking at the resulting disenfranchisement of our young people. Unwittingly we have bought into this cultural belief system and have played into the formation of our youth's consumer identity. The house of belonging and belief systems we have built for our youth is empty and waiting to be filled by the belief and belonging system most beneficial to corporations and the capitalist system - namely, consumerism. If you buy, perform and follow then maybe you might belong. The authors offer an alternative biblically-based ideology of youth as called, others-oriented, resourced, and fully able to participate in community. In fact chapter 8 "Lives to Offer" should be read along with any career or educational guides parents and students might be reading to help shape their life path.

I've read quite a bit about the male spiritual path (e.g., Richard Rohr, Bly et al) where it's argued that the absence of effective "rights of passage" in our culture lead to small belonging systems and shallow belief systems. However, I never really appreciated the historical background behind the disappearance of the rituals into adulthood. The lack of meaningful rituals into adulthood is more troubling in the midst of the materialist ideology that replaces potentially larger belief and belonging systems.

I would recommend this book to those who want to shape a new church culture that realizes what is really real - the deep foundational underpinnings of God's reign in us, our communities, our culture, and our world. I think it is critical to understand the impact of this life gap in which teenagers find themselves and give them the tools to emerge as called, convicted and connected adults.

In fact I would recommend this book to all adults. Unless we, as so called "adults", live as people with a christian belief system and a deep and broad belonging to community then how can we expect younger adults to follow a Jesus who calls us to hear the beat of a non-normative drummer. We must become ruined against consumerism if we hope to "ruin our kids" against the cultural norms and towards being in Christ.

Questioning the Labels We've Put on Teens
By Steven J. Thurman
In "Consuming Youth," Berard et. al. bring their wealth of years working with teens to bear on a problem that is often simply accepted as part of youth culture. The authors use both the strength of their successes with Ministry Quest and the failures that they and others have experienced in youth ministry to formulate an applicable method to bring awareness to the problem of consumerism and to lead teens away from it. They argue convincingly that the way teens are perceived contributes greatly to how they are treated, which contributes greatly to how they act and rely on a consumerist culture for guidance, which perpetuates the cycle by confirming expectations based on how they are perceived. By eschewing the ideological code of youth as solely peer-oriented, self-absorbed rebels and embracing a new ideology of youth as resourced, called, and others-oriented, we can help guide teens towards their true identity and vocation. Berard et. al. have written a Christian book virtually devoid of Scripture, a technique that works because the focus is not so much on discipleship as it is on the history of adolescence and the perpetuated mistakes dating from the early days of youth ministry. The book is often repetitive of its main points, but this serves to remind the reader how hearing the same thing repeated many times causes it to become accepted as truth, much like the aspects of youth culture that we have long heard "them" say. The authors urge an ethic of freedom and discourage a bounded, cookie-cutter perspective of youth. The reader is invited to view teens as gifted, diverse individuals who both benefit and benefit from the adults in their lives.

As a secondary school teacher for nearly 25 years, I've noticed that teens respond positively to being treated like adults. This book confirms that we need to take this same attitude in our churches. Youth groups are too often segregated and led by a single individual. Teens would benefit from a wider mentorship and contact with the church as a whole. The church would likewise benefit from an influx of vital, gifted servants. Our youth need to be allowed to make mistakes, challenge us, and find their identity not in trademarks and materialism, but in the use of their spiritual gifts in service to the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

This book needs to be read by every youth minister. But I also recommend it to other ministers and to high school teachers. Moving away from our preconceived notions of teens...what they are like, what they can do, etc....will help us coax them in directions that will shape the rest of their lives.

Youth: Consumed or Called
By Brian Henderer
This book begins by illustrating how the systems that were originally designed to assist adolescents development and transition to adulthood are impacted by targeted marketing toward youth. As related to a key element of adolescent development, identity formation, the authors explore the idea of a "marketed identity." Instead of a family or community recognizing and guiding a transition to adulthood, the "corporation" is promoting an identity for the adolescent to identify with and embrace. (p57) To counteract this, a "new ideology" needs to be developed. This ideology needs to change from one that views adolescents as self absorbed consumers that don't need adults to people who are called into being by a Creator (p.66) who have something to offer to others in relationships while being loved, mentored and cared for.

The authors suggest that youth ministry be "re-imagined" in light of consumer culture. This re-imagining involves connecting the stories of student's lives to God as the source of identity. After a brief and informative exploration of youth ministry's history the author's propose their suggested response: Imagining youth ministry as one avenue to assist students to understand their "vocation."

"Vocation" is understood to be God's call. Vocation is more than finding the right job. Vocation is explored as that which is born out of God's call on an adolescents life (identity) as they are connected a broader church community. A case study of a program that assists students in discovering God's call provides some practical suggestions for youth ministry, the church, and community to implement.

As a person who has worked with adolescents and leaders in education, non-profits, and the church for over 20 years, I see this book as a valuable resource. I am encouraged that the authors objectively evaluate culture and its impact. Yet, they call society (church, families, community) to guide adolescents to find an identity rooted in Christ and the call. I can envision this book being a catalyst for "re-imagining" ministry and relationships for all who care about adolescents.

Thank you. introduction: It's Not Easy Being an Artist in the Church Could you reach deep in yourself to locate that organ containing delusions about your general size in the world---could you lay hold of this and dredge it from your chest and look it over in daylight---well, it's no wonder people would rather not. Leif Enger, Peace Like a River In music school, I studied composition with an accomplished composer whom I deeply admired and respected. He knew I was involved in the music ministry at my church, but we rarely talked about it. Except, that is, for one brief moment near the end of my college career. During one of my lessons, several sheets of score paper accidentally fell out of my folder and onto the floor. As I gathered them up, my professor quickly noticed there was music he didn't recognize written on these sheets. When I explained the music was something I was working on for church, he grimaced and said, 'I thought you would have gotten this church thing out of your system by now.' I shrugged my shoulders because I didn't know what to say. Then he asked, 'Why would anyone waste their time doing church music?' That's an interesting question, isn't it? It's one I've asked myself often over the years. Why would an artist opt to share his or her talents with the church? After all, that's not usually the first place people think of when it comes to excellence or innovation in the arts. It's certainly not the place most artists think of when they dream about where they hope to express their talent. In fact, many artists are apprehensive about the church. They're afraid it might stifle or limit them, and they are concerned that church people won't accept or even understand them. Or that they won't fit in. Artists tend to be free spirits and nonconformists, and let's face it---that doesn't go over well at most churches. One of the most tragic examples of an artist mismatched with the church is the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. As a young man, van Gogh desperately desired to follow his father into the ministry. He trained for it, but he was not a good student. Nor was he good at public speaking---a definite problem for a potential preacher. Because of his dedication, an ecumenical Protestant organization gave him an opportunity to serve as a lay evangelist in a poor coal-mining town in what is now southwestern Belgium. While there, van Gogh became deeply concerned about the plight of these downtrodden people. He began to draw pictures of them, depicting their everyday chores, their work in the mines, and the hopelessness etched in their faces. Although van Gogh's superiors expressed admiration for the way he cared for his flock, they withdrew his appointment after six months, citing his deficient preaching skills. He tried to continue without their support but was soon living in abject poverty. Bitterly disappointed, van Gogh gave up his dream of becoming a minister and never set foot in a church again. He spent the rest of his life in extreme emotional, relational, and financial turmoil, which drove him to suicide at the age of thirty-seven. In 1889, a year before he died, Vincent van Gogh painted Starry Night (plate 1). Many regard this as his most spiritual work of art. To van Gogh, the evening sky symbolized God's presence, and the prominent cypress bush in the foreground appears to be reaching heavenward with fiery zeal. If you look closely at the buildings in the foreground, however, you'll notice all of them have light coming from the windows except one---the church. Furthermore, from an architectural standpoint, the Dutch Gothic steeple, similar to the one on the church van Gogh grew up in, is incongruous with the French countryside the painting represents. In another painting called Church at Auvers (1890), a cathedral is featured on a bright sunny day. But the church is dark and also appears to have no door. Van Gogh's feelings about the church are obvious---it's a cold, dark, close-minded place. One can't help but wonder how different van Gogh's life might have been had the church encouraged him to be what God obviously made him to be---an artist. I wish a caring Christ-follower had come alongside him and said, 'Hey, Vince, maybe preaching is not your thing. But God gave you this amazing ability to paint and draw, so why not serve God with your art instead of trying to be a preacher?' I think that might actually have happened today, as the arts are playing an increasingly greater role in the ministry of the church. More and more artists are getting involved and experiencing the rewards of ministry. Still, we are also discovering just how difficult church work can be. Whenever I speak at a conference, it's not uncommon for an artist to pull me aside between sessions and ask me for advice on how to handle a troublesome situation at church. At some point in the conversation the person invariably says something like, 'I don't know how much more of this I can take. If things don't change, I don't know if I can survive another year.' I receive many similar desperate cries for help through letters, emails, and phone calls from leaders and volunteers. They are overwhelmed by the challenges, worn down by the conflicts, and discouraged by the adversity involved in doing ministry in the church. It's hard enough being an artist, but being an artist in the church can be extremely challenging. In this book, we tackle those challenges head on. I don't have all the answers, but I have some experience to share that I hope you'll find encouraging and helpful. This is not a self-help book, however, with quick-fix formulas.

The book has helped my team become more of a team while enriching their Christian journey. We also went through Heart of the Artist by the same author. It is equally good.

There is not much out there for Christian Artists that is practical. Thanks Mr Noland.

A Great Resource For Artists
By Amazon Customer
Thriving as an artist in the church by Rory Noland is an excellent book that gives readers a glimpse into the life of an artsist as he or she relates art to ministry. The ultimate message is that the artist's mission in the church should be spreading the gospel ,and that the art is just a means to an end rather than being a focus point in and of itself. He covers musicians, visual artists, media technicians, writers, singers, and the like. The author gives very thorough descriptions of problems in the church concerning the artist and his or her ministry as well as many of the potential emotions involved. Not only does the author explain relatable scenarios concerning these problems but he also gives possible solutions to avoiding offense, envy, selfishness, misguidance, etc. With a quote at the beginning of each chapter and questions at the end of each chapter, the author is able to drive his point home.Noland's approach appears to be fresh, down to earth and often humorous. In the end, the author entices the reader into following him on a journey behind church doors, and into the heart of an artist. As a Christian artist myself, I found the book and the journey very enlightening.

Awesome Book!
By BookLover
This book has all the answers! It is a postmodern look at engaging spiritual seekers in today's world. Garry Poole bases this on true relationships with people but gives suggestions on how to take the conversation--and ultimately the seeker's trust--to a deeper spiritual level. It focuses on listening, truly listening, and asking relevent questions. And every question someone could possibly have in leading his or her own small group is answered. And it works! I've used this book on a practical level--and never thought I could. I highly recommend this book to those who have spiritual seekers in their lives (which includes just about everyone).

SSG's and More!
By David J. Worley
In my opinion, Garry Poole's book is an outstanding work on one of the best evangelistic tools in contemporary Christianity; Seeker Small Groups (SSG's). In this work Poole explores many aspects of developing, leading, and maintaining SSG's. If you are interested in SSG's this book is a must read.
On top of the helpful insight and advice given for SSG's - Poole includes a hidden nugget for personal evangelism. In Chapter 5, 6, & 7 Poole explains the importance of asking great questions, listening well, and "emapthic evangelism." These three elements help to outline the most important skills that Christians need to truly share their faith and to love people well. This book gives readers tangible steps that will help them share their faith in a world that is increasingly postmodern.
All-in-all this book is a great read for anyone interested in SSG's and evangelism. Don't let the title fool you, there is more in this book than just Small Group advice.

Are You Ready To Lead A Seeker Small Group?
By Rexford R. Fisher Jr.
Seeker Small Groups is an invaluable resource for ministry in a postmodern society. Gary Poole's heart for seekers is contagious! He writes, "Seekers matter to God; therefore they matter to us." If the 21st century church is to make great strides in reaching the lost for Christ, we must understand the spiritual concerns of seekers and create opportunities where they can ask probing questions regarding the Christian faith. A seeker small group has tremendous value in that it provides a non-threatening environment for unbelievers to explore the claims of Scripture. This book provides the reader with principles and methods for launching a seeker small group.

Poole argues that everyday, ordinary Christians can lead a seeker small group. He provides practical instruction in guiding seekers through the Five Phases of Spiritual Discovery. This strategy, referred to as Emphatic Evangelism, does not require expertise in outreach ministries. It simply requires that one be willing to accept the seeker, ask great questions and listen intently.

For those who may be a bit nervous about starting a seeker small group, Poole offers some suggestions for inviting friends, making a first impression, and conducting future meetings. He also explains how to develop a discussion outline that moves seekers from their current beliefs to the biblical truth they need to discover. Personal stories by the author, leaders, and participants give testimony to how the small group ministry has been a powerful tool in helping seekers cross the line of faith. For every Christian who is serious about leading seekers to Christ, this book is a must.

Very disappointed...NOT at all like a Devotional!
By Hollee Saville
I buy the Beginner's Bible and Beginner's Bible for Toddlers as gifts often, so I was very excited to get this devotional for our son. Unfortunately, my husband and I were incredibly disappointed with the low-level, unimaginative questions that make this a so-called devotional. The questions weren't relevant to the stories or any morals, honestly...definitely don't teach kids about God or His Word.

You would be better off buying the Beginner's Bible and asking questions yourself, ones pertinent to the story, or get your child to consider situations in his/her own life that relate to the story. We returned this to Amazon for a prompt refund (thank you Amazon, as always, for #1 Customer Service)!

Great devotional for ages 2-5
By Amazon Customer
We are using this with our 16 month old daughter. Readings take about five minutes and they are very applicable. The book is a little old for her though, but not by much. At the end of each devo, it asks some questions that she is not able answer yet. However, that is expected. This is undated, and will not last for the year. There are only 31 days to the book, so it will not last long. We will probably use it, stick it in the book shelf until she forgets it, and use it again when she is little older.
