Great bible story book!

My son is almost 2 and loves this book. It captures his attention because it's not too wordy, has a flap to turn on every page (giving him something to do), and incorporates a lot of sounds like crash or bonk that he enjoys. There are also a lot of animals in the stories that he likes to take note of and say the sound they make. I've been reading it to him long enough that I can leave a word out here or there and he can fill it in for me. :) Great book to start teaching some foundational principles about God's love and obeying God. There is a short bible verse at the end of each story that summarizes the story and helps to incorporate some scripture memory. The artwork is also super cute!

Great collection of Bible stories

My 2 1/2 year old loves this book. We've been reading it to her for probably a year now and she can practically read it back to us now! I've had to tape a few of the flaps back on but it's nothing that prevents her from reading it. I was hoping to find other collections by the same author/illustrator but from what I've seen, this is the only collection - the rest are individual stories. Definitely worth it, in my opinion.

Old book, timeless story

I first read "The First Easter", by Peter Marshall, over 25 years ago. It now is a permanent part of my "favorite books" shelf, and I buy used copies quite often to give as gifts to family, friends, and church libraries. Soon after starting the book, I was caught up in the lives and times of Jesus and His Disciples, and felt as though I was a bystander as the final week of Jesus' life before His crucifixion played out in front of my eyes. When Mary cried at the tomb, I cried with her, and when she saw Jesus, her joy was so real, that I felt like I was right there with her, seeing Him and believing that He was raised from the dead, just as He had promised. Easy reading, can be completed in a few hours, but leaves a lasting feeling of having been there.

I was moved to tears.

This book is a well written, and moving account of the final week of Jesus. You feel as though you are walking along with Him during that time. You can feel the pain, rejection, and triumph of the crucifixion and resurrection. This is a life changing book. I was literally moved to tears the first time that I read this book.

Mounce's Complete Expostory DictT

For, those using the NIV, or most new translations, this is the dictionary to use. I used Vine's for many
years (and still do at times) but am now most satisfied with my 'new and improved' Mounce's Dict.' The O.T.
and N.T. are put together and make it much speedier for me. Uses both G/K & Strong's numbering systems, which
can be quite helpful. It is my Bible Dict by choice, & I give it 5 stars. Try it and you will see why!

Chris Folmsbee has served as a youth pastor for nearly 15 years, and now serves as a volunteer youth worker in his local church. He currently leads Barefoot Ministries, a youth ministry training and publishing company located in Kansas City, and is on staff with Youthfront. Chris is the author of several books including his most recent, Story, Signs, and Sacred Rhythms: A Narrative Approach to Youth Ministry. He lives in Overland Park, Kansas, with his wife, Gina, and their three children, Megan, Drew, and Luke.

The meatiest of the Easter titles reviewed here, this volume offers the most faithful retelling of the Easter story. Haidle (The First Christmas Tree) begins her account with Jesus' raising of Lazarus, a foreshadowing of his own rise from the dead but also an act that ignites the ire and jealousy of other priests and teachers. The author then turns to the key events of Holy Week, beginning with Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem (Palm Sunday) to celebrate Passover and his overturning of the money changers' tables in the Temple on Monday. Spector (A Garden's Promise) contributes a dramatic painting depicting the betrayal of Christ, as money drops into Judas's open hands. All of the pivotal moments appear here, from Pilate's reluctance to crucify Christ to Christ's rising from the dead. Spector keeps the focus on the drama at hand and, except for a few inconsistent renderings of Christ's face, his portraits are accomplished. Haidle continues the action with stories related in Luke and John about Christ's appearance to Mary Magdalene and Mary, wife of Cleophas, as well as to the disciples. (Adults should note that biblical references for these events are not given.) The only drawback is the addition of the "He Is Alive!" refrain on the last four spreads; the repetition seems unnecessary and forced in an otherwise accessible narrative. Ages 4-8.

I teach a Sunday School type class on Wednesday nights to 3rd - 5th graders, and we were doing a study of Jesus. I didn't like what my teacher's manual had me doing for the Easter story, so I looked in our church library for a good book to explain the Easter story. I came across this. My kids were so entranced! It follows the Bible very well and is quite detailed. It is pretty long, so I split reading it over two times. The kids were not happy when I told them I would have to continue it next week. They said they would definitely be back the next week to hear the rest! How great is that? :)

This is an excellent book to use when teaching the Easter story. It has illustrations that are colorful and lifelike with a text that follows the Bible. A few times the wording is made simple so that small children can understand the story more easily. I have been using this book for years and each year the class becomes so involved with the story that one could hear a pin drop while I read.

This is tremendous. It is invaluable as a resource to the Bible translator, Greek student, and morphemecist, It is the only book that lists all of the words of the New Testament dividing them into their individual morphemes. It also lists all of the morphemes used in the New Testament and shows what words contain those morphemes. --A fascinating work.

Cute idea.

This is part of a series with takes on popular movies.... We have Lost in Place & Frog Wars. The books are cute. Nice story, good message. Not the best choice for a quick bedtime story - it's a little lengthy. With 3 boys under 6, when bedtime rolls around, i'm beat! I read this during the day now and save the shorter stories for bedtime.

About the Author

Jim Hancock invested two decades as a church-based youth worker. Now he spends his days writing and creating digital movies and learning designs for youth workers, parents, and adolescents. He's the author of many youth ministry resources including How to Volunteer Like a Pro and The Justice Mission, and co-author of Good Sex 2.0 and The Youth Worker's Guide to Helping Teenagers in Crisis.

Dr. Kara E. Powell is an educator, professor, youth minister, author, and speaker. She is the Executive director of the Fuller Youth Institute and a faculty member at Fuller Theological Seminary (see www.fulleryouthinstitute.org). Kara also serves as an Advisor to Youth Specialties and currently volunteers in student ministries at Lake Avenue church in Pasadena, CA.  She is the author of many books including Sticky Faith: Everyday Ideas to Build Lasting Faith in Your Kids (with Chap Clark) and Deep Justice Journeys. Kara lives in Pasadena with her husband, Dave, and their children, Nathan, Krista, and Jessica.

Good Godly advice.

I'm a youth pastor's wife and I just found an earlier version of this book back int he the church's storage units, just last night. I was so thrilled to find this and have been studding over it all day. I hope we can implement this in our youth group soon! Our kids NEED to know why they believe what they believe.

One of the great things about Swimming with Faith is that it shows Missy Franklin’s faith, determination, and humility.

Swimming with Faith: The Missy Franklin Story by Natalie Davis Miller chronicles Missy Franklin’s athletic journey, as she trains as a swimmer and eventually lands at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The book is formatted as a children’s chapter book and is geared for 8 to 12-year-olds. I think that children will be excited to read Franklin’s story; Swimming with Faith reminds me of a children’s book focusing on Michelle Kwan that I adored as a child.

The book incorporates facts about Franklin’s life and career and features many quotes by Franklin. Adults may find the book interesting, since the book is reminiscent of a collection of news stories, and readers can learn many things about Franklin’s career and swimming record. Children may learn more about Olympics and the competitive sport of swimming through this book. The book includes an index of helpful swimming terms that young children may not know, such as touchpad, recall rope, and qualifying times. One of the great things about Swimming with Faith is that it shows Missy Franklin’s faith, determination, and humility.

Swimming with Faith takes a look into the life of Missy Franklin, mostly focusing on her high school years. I have to say, we have not had television for about 10 years and I really did not know anything about Missy and what she had been through. It was an interesting look into the life of a girl with a passion for swimming and goals she was reaching for and convictions to do what she felt was the right thing. She sounds like an amazing young woman with a big faith in our great God. I love that she is presented as someone younger people can look up to as an example...I would LOVE to my daughter to read this book.

Right now, as we speak, Missy is competing in Olympic Trials to see if she will have a spot on the 2016 U.S. Olympic Swim Team...so this is unbelievable timing!

So, I did really enjoy the information in this book. The hard part for me was the writing style. It read a little more like a newspaper (or something) than a book for me. There were SO MANY citings in the book that disrupted the flow of the text for me. This might be the way books are written these days, but I am more used to just having the citings in the back of the book. This could be a personal thing for me...

Anyway, a cool feature in the back of the book is a swim dictionary to explain what all those swimming terms mean. 13 pages of terms help readers unfamiliar with the terminology keep on reading.

I think this is a fantastic book for young people to read!

Interesting biography!

I was excited to review this book because growing up, swam twice a week, loved it and still do. Although I do not follow Olympic news, my love of aquatic sports made me eager to read this biography. Of course, I also have a thing for biographies! I have read a couple similar biographies published by this company and find them quite interesting and appropriate for a variety of ages and readers. Although directed to a younger audience perhaps, these books are just as interesting to adults such as myself. We older readers can simply finish the slim paperback much faster and obviously (hopefully) don't need the short dictionary at the back of the book!

I found this biography quite interesting. It was very detailed, which might bore younger readers who have no interest in sports/swimming/Missy Franklin. However, the book was not boring to me. I was inspired by Missy Franklin's story and her quest for victory at even such a young age! One thing that surprised me is that although she has a strong faith, she is Catholic, which is important to understand before reading the book.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion.
