Devotions With a Sense of Humor
By Kathryn Page Camp
This book contains approximately 90 daily devotions for teenagers. I have two teenagers, and we read the book for family devotions at the dinner table. The book is primarily written by Ken Davis, a Christian comedian, writer, and speaker who appeals to all ages. Most of the devotions use humor to make their point, and all are interesting. The devotions in this book are equally good for Junior High or High School youth and for both sexes. They are also good for all denominations. (The only downside to the book is that some of the devotions are a little long when you are hungry and want to eat dinner!)

Great Short Devotions!
By Amazon Customer
I am now a youth minister in my late 20's, but I actually used this devotional book in high school and I still have my copy. I have terrific memories of it. If you're looking for a book of short devotionals a teenager will enjoy, this may be the one for you.

With six teenage girls living under one roof, things are bound to get interesting. Mix six teenaged girls and one ’60s fashion icon (retired, of course) in an old Victorian-era boarding home. Add guys and dating, a little high-school angst, and throw in a Kate Spade bag or two … and you’ve got The Carter House Girls, Melody Carlson’s new chick lit series for young adults! The Carter House experiences a shake-up as one of its own returns home after an unnerving disappearing act. Then, friction grows as a school Homecoming Queen race heats up, turning friends and housemates against one another. DJ, Eliza, Taylor, Kriti, Rhiannon, and Casey show they have plenty of lessons to learn as the votes roll in. Some grow smarter and closer to God, while others seem to make the same mistakes over again. Despite all their differences and disagreements, the Carter House girls continue to grow together, forging a bond that strengthens through hardship. Hearts CAN change and friendship paves the way for at least one girl to move closer to God.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up—DJ Lane lives with five other girls in a boardinghouse owned by her grandmother, a retired fashion model. As the novel opens, she discovers that her runaway roommate, Taylor, has returned. Taylor quickly resolves her differences with the other Carter House residents and in the process snags a coveted role in the school musical. Just as DJ thinks life in Crescent Cove might settle down, she is injured while saving a child from an oncoming car. Although she has become a local heroine, she struggles with the emotional and physical impact of the accident, feeling alone and insecure as her friends carry on with their lives at school. While DJ recuperates, Taylor and Eliza compete against each other in the homecoming queen contest, DJ's boyfriend reconnects with an old flame, and her volleyball teammates continue the season without her. Although each character represents a type, they are not one-dimensional. As the plot rambles along, jumping from one situation to the next, the author reveals different layers of her characters' personalities and, in the end, provides the satisfying twist of an unexpected result in the homecoming queen election. Reminiscent of Francine Pascal's "Sweet Valley High" books (Random), but with strong Christian overtones, this novel touches on a variety of issues, including prescription drug abuse, that will resonate with teens.—Linda L. Continued good YA fiction
By Tina
For those of us who have enjoyed this series from the beginning, Homecoming Queen will come as no surprise. Eliza, Taylor and DJ (although, once again reluctantly) find themselves competiting against each other for the title of Homecoming Queen.

Eliza, who is the master of the suble manipulation shows more of her true colors here.

Taylor who has been basically hateful and DJ's nemesis from day 1 pulls out all the stops. and

DJ - seemes somewhat clueless and bewildered.

I love this series - all the girls have their very own distinct personalities and while I can't stand most of them, they are such fun to read. DJ needs to get a clue though - through the last 3 books, she seems to stumble through her life - always reacting - she always seems to be 2 steps behind everybody else and I have to say, its getting a little irksome!!

Still, this continues to be a very entertaining series and Carlson is great at writing YA. On to the next in the series!!!

In this book you see a glimpse of Eliza's competitive side. Also DJ's love life faces a problem. This book at first seems okay in the beginning, but the further more you read, the more interesting it gets. Especially at end, it gets way better.

This book was very encouraging. The main character goes through a lot in this book and yet is able to work through it all. Plus at the end of each book, you want to keep reading.

totally captivating for girl athletes
By soccerdadof4
My 11 year old daughter was enthralled with this series from the outset -- devoured every book, which we used as a reward for good deeds, as soon as she received it! We used to insist she read, but when she received the last book in this series, she read the whole thing in 3 days! Where is the next one -- the series can't stop at four!

Great series
By Gregory L. Henesy
My daughter loves the Faithgirlz series. We got her a kindle to keep up with her want to read and she is constantly looking for more of Nancy Rue's books to download. These are the perfect books for young girls to read. There is so much garbage out there and I'm glad we can get books like these.

A Great Read
By S. Spanheimer
My granddaughter loves to read. The Faithgilrz gives her the kind of stories tween and young teens love to read, but with the morals a Christian family wants their kids to have, without the smut! She said this series is great and she has told all her friends about the series.

Great Series
By Francee K.
My son loved this series when he was in 5th and 6th grades. He usually does not like to talk about books, but he would show me scenes and explain them to me. I haven't read them myself, but from what he said, they seem to follow the Bible well.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2–When young Jacob, a lowly palace servant, overhears the three Wise Men telling King Herod about following a star in search of the "new king," he stows away in a rolled-up carpet and goes off with them. Awestruck by his meeting with the holy family, he later helps them escape Herod's soldiers. The text is quite wordy, but the message of Jesus being the herald of a new kingdom "where the great and the small will stand side by side" comes through clearly, if dully and didactically. The cartoon illustrations have that glitzy Disney look that children seem to appreciate.–E. M.

A Little Christmas Magic
By Dennis Doubleday
Lushly illustrated in a style reminiscent of Disney's "Aladdin", "The Littlest Magi" skillfully weaves a tale that combines elements of the familiar Christmas story with an original story of a small, unimportant boy--a servant to King Herod--who strikes out on an adventure and discovers that there is another kind of King.

The story allows children to visualize themselves in the title role and thus to participate in the events in a way sure to delight them.

An outstanding Christmas story!
By Cheryl Havens
I just recently received "The Littlest Magi" as a gift for my son. We absolutely love it! The illustrations are breathtaking and the story is magical. Mr. Auer has taken the well-known Christmas story and added a unique and creative twist. We see the birth of Jesus from the eyes of a small, orphaned boy who learns about the true meaning of Christmas. It will definitely become a holiday tradition in our household.

A new Christmas tradition
By Ann
I read this book to my seven year old nephew Thanksgiving night and he said, "I thought it was really neat how Jacob helped baby Jesus escape from King Herod and how he got a family in the end." This book tells the Christmas story through the eyes of a child and I expect it to become a family tradition for many Thanksgiving to come.

A cute book about the story of Christmas
By ElaineReads
This book is very cute. In rhyming, singsong text, this book tells the real story of Christmas. The illustrations are absolutely adorable. My kids (three and one), as well as myself, are fans of VeggieTales so I knew I had to get them this book. I really wish they would make this into a movie. I think it would be a success, as it is hard these days to find really good children's Christmas movies. I would think this would be a nice addition to the classroom or Sunday school, or anywhere there are small children who enjoy reading and being read to.

This is a delightful book for all ages. It covers the details of the first Christmas in a fun poem that repeats and builds. The illustrations are "Veggie" all the way and bring a smile to the faces of even toddlers.

Great addition to our family Christmas story collection

Great addition to our family Christmas story collection. If you love VeggieTales, this is a must have. It's a shorter story and images are lovely. Best of all it beautifully captures the real reason for Christmas, while entertaining your child. Item was shipped quickly and packaged properly.

God used this process to completely transform his youth group as they found themselves experiencing God in a whole new way. Take a journey into the amazing process of Storying, and discover how it can change your life and ministry. This new approach to learning builds a lasting theological foundation while challenging students to discover their unique identity and calling in God's story. I run a youth group in a rural town in Maine where Christianity is not the norm. So my ministry is more about evangelism than discipleship. I have roughly 15 kids coming every week for pizza, soda, and hide-n-seek in an ancient church building. They love it!

What they don't love is hearing about God. I've tried so many different approaches, but nothing seemed to work... Until I came across this book.

Michael Novelli lays out a method that is great for both believers and non-believers. We tell the stories of the Bible, the ones we heard in Sunday School and forgot about, and then we retell them. Afterwards we discuss them. Then we key in on what we learn about God from these stories. Through this, the group will learn to see Scripture as one larger story. And then they will have a context for any further teaching (systematic, spiritual formation, etc.). I am learning so much - even after 23 years of being a Christian (and my time in Bible College).

I would strongly suggest to anyone working with youth - get this book (and check out Novelli's website with free stuff - [...])!We're only into our 3rd week of storying, but the group is getting more involved with the bible than I've EVER seen in 13 years of youth ministry.

There's only one caveat - Novelli seems to be friendly with the emergent camp. He points to the likes of Brian McClaren and others (he has a list of 4 or 5) as great teachers. I'm not sure what he means by that exactly, but it certainly makes me a bit leary. Fortunately, emergent theological leanings or not, Novelli's method works! And you can choose your own stories from the Bible to work with. I know I have.

Making Youth a Part of God's Story
By M. Holley
This is an amazing book and the DVD is such a bonus. It was great to see them go through the storying process and seeing the youth really get into God's story. It makes such great sense to me. We have not tried out the process of storying yet, but I am very excited about the possibility.
Here is a little snipit from the book that I really liked:

"We need to stop tryinig to fit God into our lives and stories and realize that God desires us to play a role in his Story instead. As subtle a difference as it may seem, the shift in perspective changes everything. When we see ourselves as a part of God's Story---as to opposed to God being a part of our stories--it awakens us to live in a broader reality, to live for and contribute to something bigger than ourselves.

Furthermore, fitting God into our own stories seems akin to trying to create our own realities--revolving around our own desires--as we ask God to bless our actions. We then invest time and resources trying to find out how the Bible is relevant to our lives instead of trying to discover and pursue how we might become more relevant to God's Story already in progress.

God doesn't have a relevance issue - -we do!

Again, Eugene Peterson describes this so well:

The Christian life is not about us; it is about God. Christian spirituality is not a life-project for becoming a better person, it is not about developing a so-called "deeper life". We are in on it, to be sure. But we are not the subject. Nor are we the action. . .The great weakness of North American spirituality is that it is all about us: fulfilling our potential, getting in on the blessings of God, expanding our influence, finding our gifts, getting a handle on principles by which we can get an edge over the competition. And the more there is of us, the less there is of God."

We're called to join God and his actions in us and in the world, participating in what God is doing. When we get a picture of how our lives fit into the encompassing epic of God's Story, we begin to see our path in God's activity as his people in the world. Our focus changes. We move away form our own agendas to join God in restoring things to wholeness- -the way God created them to be. It's a focus that moves beyond personal growth to participation in God's kingdom."

A good start, but seems like very basic stuff to me
By Thomas Luttrell
The ideas presented in this book are a good introduction to leading Bible discussions for young people. But perhaps I'm way ahead of our times since I always use storytelling, so this book seemed like very basic stuff to me.

He discusses how in a world that communicates electronically through media and less through text, that we use symbols and stories to help communicate more effectively today. Therefore, he discusses the importance of telling stories of the Bible. When telling Bible stories, he tries to capture people's imaginations by telling the stories in a compelling, interesting way that is also faithful to Scripture. In addition, his method involves active listening using one's imagination, helping people retell the story for themselves, and then thinking about what are some new things in the story that they are now aware of. Then, he leads a somewhat typical discussion helping people to get into the meaning of story. I did like his process questions which look like:
What questions do you have?
What do you wonder about?
What stood out to you, maybe for the first time?
What picture did you see in your mind?
What did the character really want?
What did they do right? Do wrong?
What were the consequences?
Why is this an impt lesson for us?
What do you learn about God?
Where do you see this story reflected in the world? Your life?

I also liked the idea of using symbols to link each weekly "episode" to each other and the larger picture, so that people remember the past stories and can see how they all link together.

Yet, the author seems to emphasize a more cognitive, intellectual understanding of the Bible stories, and does not emphasize the more emotional side of stories or how to apply the Bible story to our lives today, even though I know that's his intent.

My major complaint is that after having done more interactive Bible studies, his method seems far less revolutionary by comparison. First, I believe young people like to use the creative arts, like art, music and drama. That's why I have been excited about Bibliodrama, as described by Peter Pitzele, which presents a lot of new possibilities for helping people "experience" the story and also helps bring out creative expression and connects with people at an emotional level. Scripture Windows: Toward a Practice of Bibliodrama

Also, while I appreciated the author utilizing break-out groups (which Bibliodrama does not use), I think there needs to be more thought about how to effectively use small groups to help people grow. Finally, while he talks about helping people connect with God's story as described in the Bible, it doesn't do much to help people connect the Bible with *their* personal stories, at their own emotional level.

One minor issue about the DVD kind of bothered me. Even though I'm white, I was actually a bit turned off by the non-diversity presented in the video where everyone is white, except in the promotional video. Maybe it's because I have lived in very diverse places and the author lives in Illinois, but I would think that they could at least try to give an appearance of diversity in the actual training video.

Mounce Greek and English Interlinear New Testament
By Leon M. Roberts
This is an excellent tool for seminary students and faculty as well as bible college level Greek students. I use this for bible study and sermon preparation and to complete seminary projects. It saves steps by giving you the Strong's numbers and lexicon references which saves time. This is an excellent work which every serious scholar would want to have in their library, however, I hesitate to suggest its use to lay people who have not had any formal Greek training. For those with no background in biblical Greek, try William Mounce's "Greek For The Rest of Us" and also mounces other textbooks and workbooks as well.

The best interlinear I've ever used
By Jonathan Blocher
I have owned at least four interlinear New Testaments over the last forty years, and this is by far the most useful. I am only a dilettante in Greek (two years in college 1973-74), so I need all the help I can get. As others have mentioned, the parsing guides, and the G/K numbers coupled with the lexicon support my amateurish attempts to use the Greek. Parallel columns with the literal NASB and the rather paraphrastic NIV offer alternate renderings. It's dangerous to draw doctrinal conclusions from the Greek at my level of fluency, but this is a terrific tool that I can use to check other expositor's claims about the original language of the New Testament.

Great Study Resource
By Mark Smith
This interlinear is great for what it is...a study resource. It is not meant to be lugged around and taken to church. It is meant to sit on your desk and study. As such it includes the GK numbers for each Greek word, and each Greek word is parsed. It is meant for a person who is either really serious about their Bible despite having no Greek training, or someone who has a little understanding of the Greek language, but not enough to pop open a Greek New Testament and start reading.

The Greek font is wonderful compared to the old style you see in other interlinears, and the page does not feel cluttered, despite the fact that it is fully used.

Get and enjoy!
Jesus IS Lord.

Review
“A theology of pleasure! What a great idea! And what a pleasure to read. With the verve and intelligence we’ve come to associate with all his work, Gary Thomas has taken to heart Jeremy Taylor’s warning that, ‘God threatens terrible things if we will not be happy.’ We all need this book---both the pleasure-challenged and the pleasure-prone; those who get it wrong and those who don’t get it at all. Joy is, after all, the serious business of heaven (C. S. Lewis).” -- Ben Patterson

“If Gary Thomas writes a book, you need to read it. It’s as simple as that. He has incredible insight into spiritual truths and is able to make those truths graspable for all audiences. In Pure Pleasure Gary reminds us it is OK for Christians to feel good---even have fun! A refreshing message at the right time for contemporary believers. You are going to enjoy this book.” -- Ed Young

“Gary Thomas writes for all of us who sometimes feel guilty about the good things God does for us. In Pure Pleasure, he helps us understand that the abundant life Jesus promises in John 10:10 is a better life than we could ever have imagined. And here is the good news: it is not life after death, but life after birth!” -- Dr. David Jeremiah

“Gary’s book is unlike anything I have ever read. He has stumbled upon a hidden treasure of truth that will no doubt set many Christians free to experience God’s richest blessings. Like Sacred Marriage, Pure Pleasure is a groundbreaking book that I would recommend to any Christian who desires to more fully know the heart of God.” -- Dr. Juli Slattery

“As Gary Thomas so aptly demonstrates, ‘pure pleasure’ is not a biblical oxymoron but rather a key characteristic of the God-honoring, soul-satisfying life. Warning of the dangers of both fleshly indulgence and an equally fleshly asceticism, Thomas guides our pursuit of holy delight by showing us how to embrace it in its fullness and maintain its connection to the pleasures in which God himself delights.” -- Randal Roberts

“This attention-keeping book will challenge, liberate, and inspire the reader to worship God for every way he intended his children to celebrate his gifts of marriage, sex, family, money, time, laughter, joy, and exercise. Gary does a fantastic job of biblically balancing warnings of unhealthy pleasures to practical solutions to retaining the healthy ones.” -- Miles McPherson

“I don't think it is an understatement for me to say I doubt you've ever read anything quite like this. . . . Not only does Gary give us permission to embrace life with all its legitimate joys, he encourages us to embrace them wholeheartedly! Whether it’s a good cup of coffee or a walk in a park or a great mystery novel, the book shows us how the things that delight our souls are designed to enhance our walk with God and bring him glory.” -- Tricia McCary Rhodes

“Pure Pleasure by Gary Thomas will help you to embrace and experience God, fullness of joy in his presence, and eternal pleasures at his right hand. I highly recommend it as essential reading for building a life of true pleasure and joy from a biblical perspective.” -- Siang-Yang Tan, , Professor of Psychology

Rambling
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
I'm more confused by this book than enlightened. Not that I disagree with the author's thesis; far from it, I think he's probably correct. But instead of making his point in the most concise, convincing manner, he writes like a hyperactive pulpit preacher who can't put the brakes on his tongue.

Gary Thomas believes we are made by God to enjoy the blessings of God's creation. Not that we should wallow in self-indulgence and be slaves to sensuality, but that laughter, good company, good food, marital sex, and other simple joys are God's gift. When well-meaning Christians think dour self-denial makes us holy, Thomas says, we squander the beauty of creation and bring displeasure to God.

My problem is that Thomas makes this point in a brief, persuasive, succinct way... then keeps talking. His argument loops back on itself time and again, long after most audiences already accept the validity of his point. He cites scripture, quotes other authors, regales us with family anecdotes, until I'm ready to shout that I believe him already, and he can get to the next point.

Then as he keeps making already made points, he undercuts himself. When he explains why it is godly to enjoy a cup of coffee or a good book, I'm sold. But then he talks about luxury cars, country clubs, Hawaiian vacations, and flying first class. Hey, I'm an English teacher from the provinces; these "holy pleasures" aren't available to me. Am I less loved by God, then? Oops, did I let class envy into the discussion?

You see my problem?

At other times, he undersells his point. Chapter 13 in particular, about finding holy pleasure in a world where disappointment is the rule rather than the exception, reads like the outline for something not yet completed. After gorging us with details and anecdotes, this part has almost none of the author in it, only quotes, citations, and aphorisms. Just when I need detail, Thomas yanks it away so fast that I get whiplash.

He also promises matter for the future that he could put in right here. A future book, he says, will be about the relationship between physical fitness and spiritual fitness. I'm sure that will be a great book, but since he dedicates pages and pages to his love of marathon running, why couldn't he put that in this volume? I could help him trim the book in front of him to make room for it.

And right at the end, we get a study guide for an accompanying set of online videos for group study. Wait, it says I have to purchase the videos separately. After plunking down fifteen bucks per book for the study, am I unfair to think maybe I should get the videos from YouTube?

I like Thomas' point, and I'm glad somebody has finally said that "I surrender all" doesn't mean we must punish ourselves for loving life. But this rambling book, in need of a judicious edit, is probably not the book to sell this thesis to a mass audience. I wait patiently for the book that will cash the checks Gary Thomas has written.

Christians should delight in the pleasures God offers them....
By HeatherHH
In our early marriage, my husband was in graduate school and I was soon a stay-at-home mother, and our financial situation required a lot of scrimping to avoid debt and goverment aid and still be able to give to God's work and save something. But, years later, when our financial situation was much different, I realized that I still had a mindset of scrimping and feeling guilty for anything I bought that I didn't absolutely need. And that in essence, I was not appreciating and was even feeling guilty in enjoying the blessings that God had given. Perhaps God would be better pleased if I would occasionally use some of that money to buy something that would bring pleasure to me and my family. That is the point of Gary Thomas' book Pure Pleasure.

While the world in general elevates pleasure above all else, in much of the Christian world, many things that bring pleasure (without some other obvious benefit) are regarded with suspicion. But, God created us to need relaxing and to enjoy pleasure, and He delights in giving good gifts to His children. And the Scriptures make it clear that that even includes "non-spiritual" things. The author provides a whole range of possibilities in which Christians might derive pleasure, and cautions against looking down upon the pleasures of another Christian as wasteful, while accepting our own. He gives the example of the couple that looked down upon him for his daily Starbucks habit while driving a car that easily cost $20,000 more a year than what he drove. Different does not mean wrong.

The author makes his case well, using plenty of Scripture, but he is also very careful to caution his readers not only against "pharisaic prohibitionism" but also "hedonistic license." He does caution against a life focused on one pleasure after another, neglecting responsibilities, etc. But, his ultimate point is that the things that give us pleasure and joy in this life (provided they are not forbidden by the Word of God) should be seen as gifts from God, causing us to have thankful hearts to worship and praise Him. Jesus Christ came to give us life, and life abundant; the life of a Christian should be one of joy. He also makes the point that by denying ourselves pleasure, we set ourselves up to be tempted by things which are sinful but would meet our longings for enjoyment.

The book is very readable. The book is rife with examples, personal and otherwise. The author makes his points very clear and supports them well. He has a way of taking a passage that I've read many times before and bringing out a point that I hadn't previously considered, but he doesn't have the tendency to stretch and read into the Scriptures like some authors I've read. Oh, and there are study questions at the end of each chapter if you like that sort of thing.

Having also read and appreciated the author's book Sacred Marriage, I will likely be checking out other books by this author. I would definitely recommend this book to any Christian, but especially those who struggle with guilt over enjoying themselves. However, due to some brief references to the sexual aspects of marriage, I wouldn't recommend this book for reading aloud in a mixed gender setting.

Holy Pleasures
By Rebecca of Amazon
"I enjoy chocolate because God gave me taste buds, and any pleasure I derive from eating it is a pleasure designed and sustained by God. I can talk about enjoying running or eating chocolate as temptations toward idolatry, or I can talk about them as acts of worship..." ~ pg. 55

Before reading "Pure Pleasure" I had no idea there were so many things to feel guilty about. Sure, I've thought about various issues and also realized that God doesn't like it when we complain. In the Old Testament at least he gets angry each time the Israelites start complaining. So from my own reading it does seem he is happier when we are happy even though he does allow terrible things to happen on this earth.

One of the issues taken up in this book is the topic of paying $4 for a cup of coffee when people are starving, even in our own country. I personally only buy drinks at Starbucks once in a while but the author does so every day. He sees it in an interesting light. He provides himself moment of holy pleasure so that he doesn't get enticed by illicit pleasure.

Throughout the book Gary Thomas seeks to find a middle ground between hedonism and asceticism. He fights for the right to be positive and to feel pleasure in many forms. While he talks about each pleasure he is however quick to mention how each pleasure can turn sinful.

The only pleasure I think some Christians will have problems with is the pleasure of drinking alcoholic drinks. While Gary Thomas doesn't drink a lot himself he does find a glass of wine now and then to be an enjoyable way to celebrate an occasion. As always he does things in moderation. Personally I would rather drink Welch's grape juice because to me it is much more satisfying and reminds me of the grape juice we used to drink at communion when I was a child.

After reading this book I now see how allowing yourself certain pleasures can help you to attain a level of holiness you might not otherwise obtain. If you don't allow yourself holy pleasures you are much more likely to fall into temptation. Or at least that is the authors main view on the subject.
