As the world's youth population continues to grow and interact globally, youth ministry is developing in equal fashion. Global youth ministry presents enormous opportunities, but it also requires careful leadership education and preparation. Seeking to write a definitive yet succinct textbook on the challenges and requirements of international ministry, authors Terry Linhart and Dave Livermore invited twenty-three prominent youth ministry leaders from around the world to contribute chapters. The overarching purpose was to focus on essential topics, and to inform readers on the various theological, theoretical, sociocultural, and historical issues that shape international youth ministry. Global Youth Ministry uses diverse voices from mainline, evangelical, and Catholic ministries to bridge international and denominational divisions and ensure there's no agenda from a particular theological or political niche. About the Author
Terry Linhart (PhD, Purdue University) is Chair of the Religion and Philosophy Department at Bethel College, Indiana where he teaches ministry-related courses. His research and writing has focused on missions, evangelism, multicultural ministry, and leadership development. He is the co-author of Evangelism Remixed: Empowering Students for Courageous and Contagious Faith, and author of Middle School Talksheets: Life of Christ and High School Talksheets: Life of Christ. Terry and his wife, Kelly, have three teenagers, Lauren, Jayson, and Sean.
David Livermore (PhD, Michigan State University) is president and partner of the Cultural Intelligence Center in East Lansing, Michigan, and author of several books, including Leading with Cultural Intelligence and Serving with Eyes Wide Open. Must Read

In this volume, Lynhart and Livermore compile a wealth of pertinent and challenging insight for anyone committed to effective youth ministry regardless of the location. Do not misunderstand the title. This text is not only for those actively involved in international or cross cultural youth ministry. This text is provocative for anyone in youth ministry that recognizes that whether you live and serve in Paris, France or Paris, Texas, it is in a globalized context with cross pollenated ideas, media, entertainment, cultural informants, economic drivers, consumer goods, and political concerns the world around.
This book is not a 'how to' on youth ministry around the planet, rather it is a chronicling of what is actually happening in youth ministry at various locations and in various cultures and how the Gospel is being brought to light in diverse settings with diverse challenges and opportunities. Taking the time to read and study through this text ought to provoke any youth minister toward love and good deeds, wherever they happen to serve and for however long they have done so.
I am an American with nearly 12 years of youth ministry experience now serving in the London, England area. I believe this book allows the opportunity for the practical youth pastor in the trenches of local church or para-church ministry, the discerning cultural exegete, and the youth ministry researcher to see how the Gospel is being ministered to people, families and communities in diverse cultures across the globe and to be encouraged, refreshed and challenged to do the same in whatever neck of the woods you are serving the Kingdom.

Pleasantly Surprised

This book was written as a textbook for students of youth ministry, but I was pleasantly surprised by how easy and enjoyable it was to read. The book includes several youth ministry contributors from all over the world, each with their own unique story to tell. I was also surprised by how meaningful the content was to me as a youth worker in the Midwest.
The different cultures represented in the book - from Africa to Great Britain, Latin America to Croatia to the Philippines, and from Asia to Japanese and Korean - all presented, from my experience, many differences but also many similarities that we experience in North American youth ministry. In fact, it was one of the most insightful reads into the world of student ministry that I've read.
I really appreciate the fact that the book doesn't settle for what I'd call the "cheap investment" - churches that have youth ministry departments as another program offering or an easy way to separate those "troublesome teenagers" from the rest of the congregation. The high calling that seems to run throughout is reconciliation of generations rather than separating - something we've done for far too long already.
I also believe in the importance of questions the book raises: How do we show respect to youth, and how do we minister to them wherever we are? And maybe even more important, as mentioned by the Malan Nel in the foreword, "What can we learn from one another as we show respect toward and minister to, with, and through youth?"

A foremost text on global youth ministry

Dr. Linhart and Dr. Livermore bring forth a very timely and crucial text for every Christian to read. Editing this volume was done very systematically and brings forth a beautiful collection of seasoned youth workers from around the world. In fact, in order to participate in this volume, each global youth worker had to have been in ministry for a minimum of 10 years.
This text succeeded in opening my eyes to the issues that youth face around the world and the successes and strategies of those working with them in ministry. I know of no other source by which you can get a clear picture of global youth ministry and hear from global youth workers from places like East Africa, Latin America, the Philippines, Korea, Japan, Australia, Brazil, and more.
This text is required reading for our staff at YouthHOPE ([...]) and we will continue to point people to it as a viable discussion of the theological, theoretical, sociocultural and historical issues that shape ministries around the world.
