Jesus by Nancy I. Sanders is part of the Get to Know series of biographies for young readers. It beautifully provides an historical account of not only Jesus’ earthly life, but also God’s plan from the beginning (Adam and Eve) to the end of times (Revelation), weaving archaeological evidence with the story of the Bible. The theology is sound, although the first chapter is somewhat difficult to follow as the author attempts to simplify thousands of years of history and the story of sin and evil. Readers who are not familiar with the Old Testament or the full story of Jesus may find this section confusing. A strong feature is the use of graphics throughout the book, including maps, photographs, and reproductions of religious masterpieces. Stylized sidebars–e.g., “Scripture,” “Bible Hero,” “Eyewitness Account,” “Did You Know?,” and “Word Bank”–positioned in each chapter provide additional information. Their design is reminiscent of a web page, making the book more user-friendly for today’s young reader. The “Word Bank” feature highlights not only religious terms (e.g., Messiah, repent), but also words used in our everyday language (e.g., insisted, obedient). The writing is fourth- to fifth-grade level based on a Flesch scale, but with 12 well-defined chapters the book also makes an excellent read-aloud for younger children and provides good material for vocabulary building or a first book report assignment. The inclusion of a timeline, glossary, and bibliography makes it a good reference book for a child’s home library. Readers of Imagination Station, the popular Adventures in Odyssey series by Focus on the Family, may be enticed to read this Get to Know series (Sanders co-authored several of the later Imagination Station books). Great Bible supplement!

"Get to Know Jesus: A biography for Kids by Nancy I. Sanders" is the perfect book for curious little ones who wonder what life was like for Jesus!
The book has 10 chapters in all, beginning with a chapter called "The Important Plan" which explains how we know the Bible is true. It goes on to explain where Jesus grew up, and the difference between Romans and Jews. Next we learn about Jesus' lineage and how the Bible tells us who Jesus' grandparents and great-grandparents were, all the way back to Adam and Eve.
Throughout the rest of the book. we see maps of where Jesus lived, learn about the 12 disciples and learn about Jesus' death and resurrection. Definitions are included for big words and names, and there are small facts (Eyewitness Account, Bible Heroes, and Did You Know?) throughout the chapters.
I think this Biography is perfect for kids ages 5-10. There is so much information packed into this little book! I plan to use it this Fall with my 8 year old, as a Bible supplement for school. Chapters are short, so reading could be divided into multiple days or lessons. I loved that there were many colored pictures of maps, historical landmarks, and common household items and what they looked like back then.
I cannot say enough positive comments about this book. I really enjoyed it and can't wait to show it to my kiddos! I rate this book as 5 stars!

Great Addition to a Bookshelf...Can't Wait to Get the Others in the Series

As a homeschooling mom, I'm always on the lookout for good books I can use in my curriculum. Zonderkidz Publishers has just come out with a set of historical biographies of Biblical figures that go perfectly with our Bible curriculum. There are biographies about Jesus, Mary, Paul, and King David. I decided to review Jesus.
This book is geared towards children aged 6-10. It's a smaller book (normal kid sized paperback) full color, and includes maps, photos of artifacts, and artists renditions of Jesus' life and ministry. It is 122 pages, and includes a Bibliography and a list of additional reading for kids to learn more about the times of Jesus.
I love how the biography of Jesus starts before he was born...with original sin, the ups and downs of the Jewish people, and our need for a Savior. Then, it goes into the birth of Jesus, followed by His childhood, ministry on earth, His death and resurrection, and finally His role in the Book of Revelation. Each chapter includes Biblical accounts of Jesus' life, as well as historical accounts (ie. Josephus), and scholarly interpretations. There is also a glossary of words that kids might not understand, and other really useful and interesting information about the times of Jesus.
I loved all the color photos and maps. my 5 year old stayed engaged, and I think as she gets older, these books will help her as she learns more about the context of History, and how Scripture ties into world history. My only complaint is that many of the photos came from Wikimedia, which is part of the Wikipedia chain of websites. Knowing how unreliable Wikipedia can be, I am hesitant about the photos from Wikimedia. However, I will probably purchase the other books in this series, since I really enjoyed it, and it will be useful for our homeschool journey.

My Review:
All these years I have bought biographies for my children to write reports from and to learn more on a specific individual but I recently come across and author that writes biographies based on Biblical figures. Now we can have these type of books around for our children to write papers on. The people discussed in the Bible really did exist so why not right a report on David or Daniel? Well now they can! Nancy Sanders has written a series called the "Get to Know" series and each book contains a multitude of information on each Bible figure. And there is plenty of information there to create all sorts of resources for projects and reports.
In Jesus (Get To Know), you will find many facts about our Saviour as well as maps and timelines that explain his life and ministry. Full of interesting facts, Bible knowledge and very intriguing photographs these biographies will be all you need to learn about Jesus and so much more. Geared toward the 6-10 age group and a very short read.
