Left me wanting more!
By Tanya Dennis
Nancy Rue's newest teen novel centers on Tyler Bonning, a girl on the fringe who, as a prank from the popular kids, is nominated for prom queen. At first, Tyler is mortified. She's always hated this school and now has even more reason. But when she discovers how important the prom is to her cousin, and how elite the event has become, she decides to use her new status as a platform for social reform. She initiates a "Prom for Everyone" campaign that seeks to level the field, allowing the less-than-wealthy, not-so-popular and even the outcasts on the fringe to attend and enjoy the prom.
It's no surprise when she receives opposition from the "ruling class" (a.k.a. the most popular circles), but it seems this endeavor turns all her relationships topsy. She finds some common ground with her previously alien cousins, a very unlikely friend in the class president, and enemies among those believed to be her closest friends. Even her parents fall on an unpredicted side of this issue.
In the meantime, a strange book abandoned on the bus forces Tyler to think about God and what role He plays in her life. Is it possible that He could be a personal God? One who actually cares about Tyler and what happens in her life?
This book dives into the sticky side of relationships and social heirarchies with drama, action and even a touch of romance.
What I Like: I love everything about this book! It features strong, well-written characters, a multi-faceted plot, a solid faith foundation, a respectful view of adults and Christians ... there is absolutely nothing not to like about it. I especially appreciated the diversity of characters. It is rare to find solid Christian YA novels that feature African Americans as a main character rather than a sidekick. It is even more rare to see edifying, healthy interracial relationships. This book has both. The author left me wanting more of the series.
What I Dislike: Nothing.
Overall Rating: Excellent!

Thought provoking, fascinating and well-written!

Subjects: Popularity, Money, Justice, Friendships, Relationships with family
Summary: When an "invisible girl" gets nominated as a prom queen candidate you know something's up. Tyler has no desire whatsoever to be a prom queen. She's part of the Fringe, the group that's just sort of invisible. But when she gets nominated anyway, she realizes she has a chance to fight for justice. Prom shouldn't just be for the rich kids. It shouldn't be a popularity contest. The more she gets into it though, the more she finds herself in the midst of scorn and criticism. Life on the fringe was a whole lot easier than this!
Notes: One interesting aspect to this book was the characters who couldn't figure out why Tyler was so worked up about Prom. Was it really worth all the persecution she was facing? The deeper Tyler got though, the more she realized that the issues she was fighting for were a lot bigger than one night a year. It was the whole issue of whether or not someone has the right to make someone else feel bad about themselves just because they aren't as wealthy as the other person. It's easy to relate to Tyler's dad and his concern that she is pouring her energy into something not worthwhile. It's also easy to relate to Tyler and the other characters who are fighting for overall justice, for school to be a safe or secure place for everyone, not just the rich and popular. It's also about Tyler herself more than anything. As the fourth book in the Real Life series, it focuses on a teenage girl who feels like her life is falling apart and has to turn to something bigger than herself for the strength to make it through the trial.

Spot On!

Limos, Lattes, & My Life on the Fringe by Nancy Rue is the fourth and final book in the Real Life series. Tyler Bonning is used to being on the fringe of the school crowd, she's smart, not popular, and pretty happy with being invisible and ignored by the Ruling Class, the popular people. But when she's suddenly nominated as prom queen as a joke, she decides to make use of her nomination and turn it into a campaign to make the prom for everyone, popular and not. However, her decision causes some friends to become enemies and what she before thought as enemies to become friends, like Patrick, a guy she wouldn't have even shared a conversation with before. With some family tension rising with the integration of her half sister, Sunny, becoming part of the family and mysterious threats to her cause, Tyler soon finds out that brain power alone won't help her. Are the answers in a strange leather book she finds?
The author is quite the master of a perfectly balanced plot. The reader won't be bogged down by details, but there are just enough to be able to picture the scenes with clarity. This balance is hard to find, so I really appreciated it. This whole series is great, and in each one I found something that I related to. I especially loved the last two books because I "got" the characters. Their struggles in the books have been some of my struggles, and I love how Nancy Rue can enter the teen girl's mind and write exactly what the character would think and do if she was a real person. As always, I liked the Real Life book element because it applied Bible stories in an unique way with the girls' situations without being too preachy or not understandable. Unlike some of the other books, I wasn't bogged down with the portions, so although I can't pick a favorite in the series, I can say this is at the top of my list. Excellent series!
Some mentions of plans to bring alcohol to the prom, but the attempts are unsuccessful.
All in all, I rate this book five out of five stars. Highly recommended to teen girls.
