About the Author
Dr. Steven Gerali is a speaker, professor, and clinical counselor recognized around the world as an expert in the field of adolescence and youth ministry. He is the author of several books about the issues of adolescence. Before becoming a professor of youth ministry, Steve served for more than 25 years as pastor of student ministries at churches in Arizona and Illinois in the United States. He is the father of two grown daughters and he currently lives in southern California with his wife, Jan.

Eye opening and helpful

The "What To Do When..." series as a whole is extremely helpful for youth wokers, especially those who lack formal counseling training. I've bought the whole series for everyone on my youth staff, both volunteer and paid, and they find them to be fantastic resources.
As for this particular book, Gerali does a great job opening up the readers' eyes to seeing the breadth of the issue. While by no means comprehensive (it's not intended to be), it provides the basic tools needed to handle working with kids struggling with their sexuality. My only disappointment was that I wished for a lengthier section on issues of theology to help work through some of the questions that I've encountered from teens on the topic. Nevertheless, it does provide a thorough resources list as it's last chapter which helps make up for it. And again, the intent of the work was not to answer every question. It was to provide the answer of what to do in that situation, and it quite thoroughly acheived that goal and then some.

Moralistic Theraputic Deism 101

Dr. Gerali's text paints the meaning of Scriptures as something that the individual determines. While there were some good inputs on preventing the victimization of LBGT youth, Pastor (?) Gerali advocated a neutral stance on the Bible's teachings. It's more about love and pleasure than it is about God's plan for what was His very good creation.
While I might see this book as a good resource for a non-Christian reader by a non-Christian author, the fact that the author served over 25 years as a pastor leaves me speechless. As such, the most I can say for the author is that he doesn't know what the Bible teaches, even after a quater century presuming to speak God's Word.
It's very clear from the text that his position is therapeutic, not theological; quoting Scriptures as questionable proof texts.
He does more harm than good with his unapoligetic degoding of God. The text has all the characteristics of the moral therapeutic deism we see sweeping up our post-Christian nation, to the point that the reader is left asking if the author holds any convictions in a Christian faith at all.
I do not recommend this text as an asset in youth ministry. A better condensed text would be "Love Into Light" by Peter Hubbard or any of the more scholarly and theologicaly sound texts on youth sexuality by author Christian Smith.
