A course-changing event in one's life can happen in minutes. Or it can form slowly, a primitive webbing splaying into fingers of discontent, a minuscule trail hardening into the sinewed spine of resentment. So it was with the mill workers as the heat-soaked days of summer marched on...
City girl Jessie, orphaned at sixteen, struggles to adjust to life with her barely known aunt and uncle in the tiny town of Bradleyville, Kentucky. Eight years later (1968), she plans on leaving---to follow in her revered mother's footsteps of serving the homeless. But the peaceful town she's come to love is about to be tragically shattered. Threats of a labor strike rumble through the streets, and Jessie's new love and her uncle are swept into the maelstrom. Caught between the pacifist teachings of her mother and these two men, Jessie desperately tries to deny that Bradleyville is rolling toward violence and destruction.

I was hooked before the 5'th sentence
By Amazon Customer
I don't often write reviews on books, but in this case I must. I chose this book in the hope that I would find an interesting Christian story that I would enjoy and my daughters can also read. I will freely admit that Christian fiction is often sappy and predictable, especially Christian romance. Worse, (though I'm a Christian myself) I often cringe at the way God is represented in Christian novels and/or the "preachiness" in them. As a result, I did not have a lot of hope for this one when I opened it on my Kindle. Imagine my surprise, then, at finding myself standing (figuratively of course) beside the main character within the first 5 sentences. I don't know how Collins did it, but the story drew me in right away and kept me there throughout. It wasn't anything like I'd expected. Nothing in it forced me to "suspend my disbelief" as I so often need to do when reading fiction. This is a story that could be real in our world. The characters are reality based. Even the "heroes" are as flawed as we are. But from the moment I began reading I cared about them. They were me, my daughters, my husband, my friends. I cried along with Jessie in the beginning. I wanted to shout at her right along with her aunt 3/4 of the way through. I hoped in the end that the right decisions would be made by each of the characters knowing full well that some of them would make the wrong ones. And God was the God I've experienced in my own life. Always there, always working for the good of those who love Him, even in the midst of their own poor choices and the painful circumstances of life. In short, I'm glad I downloaded this book and will definitely recommend it to my girls and friends. Of course, now I need to read the other books too.

This book came in very good condition and was inexpensive. I have enjoyed other books by Brandilyn Collins and I especially like it that there are no swear words.

Deeply moving, something to savor like a warm cup of cocoa on a cold winter evening!
By S. Brower
This is the novel that introduced me to Brandilyn Collins and I absolutely loved it. While I enjoy her fast-paced seatbelt suspense, this character-driven novel--first in a series of three--is a story that I could savor over time. I did not find it preachy, but rather reflective of a time and setting in which faith was an integral part of life. It's a realistic portrayal of the struggles in the mining towns in post WWII Kentucky.
