About the Author
Les Christie (DMin, Trinity International University) is a national speaker and youth ministry veteran. He chairs the youth ministry department at William Jessup University, in Rocklin, California where he has taught the Gospel of John for the last 15 years, and is also an adjunct professor at Western Seminary. Les is the author of more than a dozen books, including Awaken Your Creativity and When Church Kids Go Bad.
David Nystrom (PhD, University of California at Davis) is Professor in Residence at Western Seminary, Sacramento Campus. He is a specialist in Roman social history and in the New Testament. Dave is the author of dozens of articles and two books, The NIV Application Commentary: James, and The History of Christianity.

A creative look into the book of John

I must start off by admitting that I am biased in this review. I received my degree in Bible & Theology from WJU in 2009 and Les Christie was one of my favorite professors. Having said that I am quite honest in what I do and if Les ever reads this, he will remember quite fondly that I was always one who "tells it like it is." I was really excited to hear about this commentary and couldn't wait to review it. I enjoyed the interior design and outline of the book. The introduction to the authorship of John, date and place of writing, and even opposing views are well thought out. The Chapters are broken down into themes, some have many pages of commentary written on only a single verse or a short passage, while other chapters have several passages with shorter commentary. I understand that it is hard to provide a commentary on some passages or on a narrative passage but I did feel that some sections could have gone more in depth. However this is a youth workers commentary and not a Ph.D. in theology level commentary [that is not to say that youth workers are not smart, as I myself am a Youth Worker, but I would be the first to admit that I am not always so smart]. This is also not to say that this commentary is a dumbing down in any way. What I feel makes this commentary unique as a "youth worker's" commentary is that it is very down to earth and relative to readers today. There are many quotes from the authors, and from other people, commentaries, sermons, and books. Each chapter also ends with several questions on both the text and questions for ones self or youth. This is another area that I felt the authors could have given us more, as I am sure Les could have written several pages or more on various youth discussions, questions, games, and activities based on some of these topics. Because of this, and at least one editorial error, I knock this book down to 4 stars [should I care if the spacing of one passage looks off? Perhaps I am a little ADD and get distracted easily by such things]. I am very happy that I purchased this commentary and will be using it quite often, both for youth work and personal study as it is a very easy read. This book is much less threatening than the giant commentary on John that was required for Les's class! I will be looking forward to purchasing future volumes!

Forget Boring and Stuffy

Les Christie, long time youth ministry veteran, joins forces with New Testament expert, David Nystrom, to write A Youth Worker's Commentary on John: Volume 1. The combined youth ministry experience and theological knowledge of these two create an accessible, readable resource. Forget the boring, stuffy stereotypes of the usual commentary, this is more then a study resource, it is a ministry resource.
Its verse by verse breakdown of each passage is packed full of information, without overloading the reader. Unlike other commentaries, each section ends with two sets of questions. The first is a challenge to think through the passage and the second is a challenge to apply and live the passage. These two sets of questions easily translate into use in lesson preparation or small group discussion. Another helpful addition is the inclusion of personal thoughts, quotes, and relevant selections from other books and commentaries.
This is a much needed resource in the youth ministry publishing marketplace. I am almost surprised it was not written sooner. With a very affordable price tag this is another one of those "must-haves" for every youth worker. Know however that only Volume 1 is available, covering just John 1-8, so be looking for Volume 2 coming in the early fall.

Great expository writing on the book of John!

A youth worker's Commentary on John is an excellent expository writing with historical backgrounds tied into each portion that is discussed. Author tries to bring out great pointers relevant to a keen student. Occasionally author's detailed commentary becomes monotonous and detailed beyond needed. Yet I would recommend it to anyone interested in studying the word.
