Obey the Great Commission without Losing Your Family

If you've ever wondered how you can obey the Great Commission and raise a family at the same time...Organic Outreach for Families is for you. This is not just a "theory." This is an amazingly encouraging, highly practical manual to motivate families to be a lighthouse RIGHT WHERE GOD HAS PLACED THEM.
Kevin and Sherry Harney start off by pointing out the importance of loving your corner of the world while NOT neglecting your family:
"Something is very wrong if we reach our neighbors with the love of Jesus but our children feel forgotten and marginalized. We have confused our priorities if we invest more time in our church than we do in our own children. Our first priority as parents is to love, teach, and lead our children toward an authentic and life-changing relationship with the Savior.
Jesus called His followers to be His witnesses to the very ends of the earth, but He also told them to start right where they lived. (Acts 1:8)"
The next few chapters demonstrate the importance of making our homes:
A safe haven
An emergency room
A playground
A place of prayer
And our homes are to be all those things for our families, extended families, churches, and communities. They share dozens of stories of how they fleshed this out, giving the reader many practical ideas.

Shine for Jesus

The concept behind Organic Outreach is based on the conviction that the Harney's had to share the love, grace, and message of Jesus in ways that feel natural. They share how each child is unique and different and regardless of their personality, life experience, or skill set should be taught how to connect with others and share Jesus.
Loving Jesus is not enough. Witnessing to your children and community is not enough. Saying you are a Christian is not enough. Believing you are a Christian is not enough. We need to be the salt and light shining into the dark world that is only choosing to become darker and farther from God.
Organic Outreach takes you through a 3-part process in helping you witness to your children, raise children to shine for Jesus, and becoming a house that shines for Jesus. If you are like me and you want more for your children in Christ then Organic Outreach for Families is just the book for you!

A Lighthouse Home

We Christians are called to be a light to the world. We are to shine Christ through us to the lost and hopeless. But how does that look? How do we transform our home into a lighthouse? Kevin and Sherry Harney are prepared to tell us.
In their new book Organic Outreach for Families (Zondervan, 2012), husband and wife team Kevin G. Harney and Sherry Harney address witnessing for Christ, using the home and family as a tool for outreach. The Harneys serve at Shoreline Community Church in Monterey, California, and they are the authors of numerous books and Bible studies.
Organic Outreach is divided into three distinct sections: 1) Reaching Your Own Family, 2) Raising Children of Light in a Dark World, and 3) Turning Your Home into a Lighthouse. Each chapter is followed by a short section which includes discussion questions, brief activities, or additional resources. Throughout the book, the Harneys' three grown sons share their experiences growing up in the Harney home. This adds some weight to the advice given by Mr. and Mrs. Harney, as we see how their children feel about the way they've grown up.
In the first section - Reaching Your Own Family, Mr. and Mrs. Harney address how we are to live out the gospel in our own homes, and how we can effectively reach our children and extended family for Christ. In this section, I most appreciated the premise that we can't shine a light that we don't have. We must model the relationship with Christ that we desire for our families. The Harneys appear to be writing from a decisional theology, rather than a confessional theology.
In section two - Raising Children of Light in a Dark World, the Harneys begin to address bringing others into our homes to witness the love of Christ. They address setting up the home as a safe haven, an emergency room, a playground, and a place of prayer. In these four chapters, they talk about how we live with integrity, grace, and love, and how to make our homes a place of interest to those around us.
My favorite quote from the book: "Prayer must be honest. As we seek God, listen to him, and talk with him in our homes, we need to speak truth. If we pray only about the good things, we are missing part of the conversation. When we refuse to cry out to God from the depths of our pain, we rob our children, our spouse, and others the chance to be real with us. A home of prayer is a place where pain is acknowledged, loss is mourned, and pain is admitted." (Sherry Harney, p. 123)
Section three - Turning Your Home into a Lighthouse - continues the conversation about how to witness for Christ from your home. The Harneys discuss how to set appropriate boundaries, deal with unexpected chaos, host adults and children, and carry the outreach into the surrounding community during the course of the day.
Organic Outreach for Families has a lot of good advice about how to structure our homes and our interactions so that we can shine the light of Christ throughout our neighborhoods. I appreciated the love, compassion, and concern I read from both Kevin and Sherry Harney. It was encouraging to read the testimonies of their grown children as well. Though some of the individual choices your family makes will undoubtedly be different (for instance, schooling choices or exactly how far you may be willing to go to make your home a playground), the Harneys outline important principles for organic outreach for families.
