'If you are in a position of positive influence, if you exercise leadership in any way, your faith in God gives you a power---a hidden power---that will allow you to make an enduring difference in the lives of other people and organizations. But how does that power work?' So says Mel Lawrenz in this fresh look at leadership which offers practical and biblical guidance to believers who want to have a deep influence and who want to know: What is the proper use of authority and power? Where do good ideas come from? How can we deal with failure? What does God expect of us? Drawing from more than thirty years of experience in pastoral ministry, Lawrenz writes for Christians in any position of influence. This book provides a new baseline for 21st century Christian leadership, addressing issues such as: * building integrity * seizing opportunities * exploring new horizons * speaking into crises * receiving power * accepting authority * promoting truth * managing expectations * dealing with criticism Using real-life examples, key Scripture passages, and history, Lawrenz shows that when believers align their responsibility to lead with the teaching of Jesus and the work of God's Spirit, their spiritual influence will have integrity and enduring effectiveness. 'Lawrenz gives us hope that the leadership pendulum which has swung from 'over- spiritualized' to 'de-spiritualized' in recent generations may have finally come to rest where it always belonged---upon Jesus Christ.' - Skye Jethani, Senior Editor, Leadership Journal, from the foreword 'It is exciting to think about believers at every level of society rising to a new call to exercise powerful spiritual influence. In his newest book, Spiritual Influence, Mel Lawrenz has given us all a new baseline for leadership that is personal, wise, and spiritual. It spans the generations and reaches across cultures. Just think what will happen if believers in positions of influence tie into the wisdom and the power that comes from God in order to bring restoration in our broken world!' - Mark Batterson, Lead Pastor, National Community Church in Washington, D.C..

Great Tools for Growing in Leadership
By Richard Burkey Lifelong Learner
I had high expectations when I picked up a copy of Spiritual Influence by Mel Lawrenz. I had listened to his podcast years ago when he interviewed Christian author and teachers. By his questions I knew he was insightful, his ministry journey in following Stuart Briscoe I knew he knew leadership transitions. In reading his weekly posts in the Brook Network I had seen how he understood influence.
I had high expectations for this book and they were met, but not as I expected. When an author says there will be no personal anecdotes, I go oh oh. Then I read the following statement because there are so many other compelling stories.
Some books you zip through either on a long plane flight or an afternoon in a comfortable chair. This book is great to read a chapter a day and let it brew, give time to ponder, to think and to grow.
The book has a complimentary web site at TheInfluenceProject.com. I checked it out after I read the book, I'd recommend you check it out before. The web site provides "The Personal Inventory", a place to rate how you are doing on each chapter. I wish I had that with me when I read each chapter.
My one suggestion for the book would be to add some questions to guide reflection in processing the compelling stories from life today and from the pages of the Bible.
Where some leadership books you pick and choose the chapters you read, this one is best read all the way through. The 4 parts from getting grounded to taking initiative to going deep to facing challenges are worth the daily investment over a month to look at influence (a word Mel uses in some ways interchangeable with leadership). Too often leadership gets caught up in position, leadership at its best looks at the influence we all have in life and how that is leveraged even more when we follow God's influence in and through our leadership.
My favorite part of the book are chapters 12-14 that show the relationship between receive power, accept authority, and promote truth. He ties the dynamic of the three together, and makes it unique with the promote truth perspective.
Though the book did not have any of Mel's personal anecdotes, the stories were indeed compelling and greatly appreciated.
I give the book 5 out of 5 stars. For those looking for a great leadership training resource and discussion tool, the bite size chapters provided good food to chew on and even better to grow one's leadership. It's a tool I will pick up again and again, and look forward to sharing with those on my leadership team.

A Necessary {and Refreshing} Look at Leadership
By Brenda Chance
Spiritual Influence at first glance may appear to be just another leadership book for a church/business culture obsessed with defining who is {or describing how to be} "in charge." But hold the ponies, this book offers a fresh, challenging, and inspiring vision of what it looks like for anyone to influence someone else for their spiritual good. In point of fact: we are all influencers, some good, others wretched. Lawrenz writes solidly from a distinctive biblical worldview; articulating well the unique virtues of true spiritual leadership in all of our most important relationships.
If you, like me, are burned out on the rhetoric of "leadership" that somehow has subverted the Church's mission of everyday people helping others walk as disciples in extraordinary ways then you will find the Jesus-way described in this book to recalibrate your purpose, no matter where it is you live out your discipleship. Lawrenz's clear thinking prompted me to reflect on my role as wife, mom, friend, counselor/discipler, blogger, and teacher. If you "lead" anyone, this book will shape your perspective in necessary ways that will strip away all comfortability with the secular model of power, "one-upmanship," and control. It will mess with your insides, especially if you learned to gain and guard your position of leadership with the art of style over substance. This book provokes growth from the inside out. While it is a quick read, it will be a long journey of becoming a person who embodies the particular kind of power of which the Bible speaks.
The book is divided into four sections:
1. Getting Grounded-What's so unique about spiritual influence?
2. Taking initiative-What actions are characteristic of an influencer?
3. Going Deep-What is at the heart of good, constructive leadership?
4. Facing Challenges-How do we navigate the hard places?
It has been several weeks since my reading of this book and as I look for the one word to summarize its message, I keep coming back to this--honor. Position and power with its privilege and entitlements have a way of stealing honor from our hearts. It's far too easy for leadership to turn on the question of "What's best for me?" and to use others to accomplish those selfish purposes. I wish every pastor, parent, teacher, coach, and boss would take the time to do a little soul-searching within the pages of Spiritual Influence and come back to those places of influences with eyes to see the preciousness and possibilities of those whom they lead. Consumerism has hijacked honor from our relationships. Lawrenz gives us an inspiring way to rescue it.
Lawrenz's final words are exactly the message I believe the Church (that's you and me) need to hear and to which we need to decisively respond: "It is one thing to realize that you influence other people; it is another to be driven by a compassion that will cause you to influence for the right reason. This means influencing because we allow ourselves to be burdened, brokenhearted, and frustrated because there is no other way to close the gap. We accept the reality that things are not the way they are supposed to be-and then reject the idea that we will leave things that way...and then we get to work."
I've read many books on leadership, but this one was different. It was like someone threw open all the windows and let the fresh air clear out the musty places. It left me changed and changing. I hope you will check it out for yourself...and then we can get to work together.

Outstanding advice for church leaders
By John Gibbs
If you are in a position of positive influence, your faith in God gives you a power - a hidden power - that will allow you to make an enduring difference in the lives of other people and organisations, according to Mel Lawrenz in this book. Your relationship with God puts you in a position where you can draw on God's own power, authority and truth to do the challenging things you must do.
The book is divided into four parts. The first part, Getting Grounded, is about engaging with God and building integrity. The second part, Taking Initiative, is about generating ideas and taking advantage of opportunities. The third part, Going Deep, relates to discernment, wisdom, power, authority and truth. The fourth part, Facing Challenges, talks about managing expectations, persevering, receiving wounds and criticism, dealing with failure, and appropriate ambition.
Some leaders consider church leadership to be essentially no different from leadership of a secular organisation or business; others concentrate on preaching and counselling, while trying to avoid leading altogether. This book makes a convincing case for the argument that spiritual influence and spiritual leadership, while they share some characteristics with secular leadership, go much further in what they require of a leader.
I found that reading the book was a spiritual experience in itself, an exercise in practising humility rather than the boost to selfish ambition that discussion of leadership success often provides. The author has had extensive experience in church leadership, but personal examples do not appear in the book, because the book is not about his success. In fact, the book is more about influencing by taking on failures, heartbreaks and frustrations than it is about achieving worldly success.
The book Spiritual Leadership: Principles of Excellence for Every Believer by Oswald Sanders has been a highly regarded church leadership text for many years. In my opinion, the present book is even better. I was challenged and inspired on almost every page. I strongly recommend the book to all Christians who exercise some form of spiritual leadership or influence.
