Roadside Assistance

Emily Curtis is a teen whose world was totally turned upside down. A tomboy who is most comfortable under the hood of a car, the last year has been one of the hardest of her young life. Her mother died of cancer, and then her fathers repair business goes belly up, so because of the staggering medical bills and the loss the business they lose their house. Her dad, Brad, looks at it as a way to make a fresh start so they move in with his sister and her family who lives in an affluent neighborhood, but somewhere along the way Emily has lost the ability to pray. Even though people around Emily try to help her, she finds it difficult to open up, until she meets Zander, the boy next door, who shares a love for working on cars, and has no problems sharing his strong Christan faith. Can the boy next door help her find her way back to God?
Amy Clipston sure knows how to weave a story. I have read plenty of her Amish fiction and wondered how she might do with something that wasn't centered around the Amish and all I can say is she has hit a home run with this one! She easily draws you into the life of Emily a young girl that is so easy to relate to. Emily is sort of a loner who has always sort of kept to herself, her life has many upheavals so its easy to understand why she might have lost her way spiritually. Zander was such a good match for her, he not only gave her a place to tinker on cars but he also listened to her. The secondary characters were just as interesting. Whitney was someone I totally misread, I expected her to be one way and she was the opposite.I also thought it was perfect how the author had Emily writing letters to her mother as a way to cope with her feelings.While this book is geared toward young adults I would easily recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading a good story
that has a nice christian message woven in that will make you laugh but will also touch your heart.

I'm moving, and when I got there, there's a cute guy next door.

Do you know how to fix a car? This girl for sure does! Meet Emily Curtis, a sixteen year old junior who's passion is fixing Chevys. Her life hasn't been easy this past year; her mom died of cancer, her boyfriend broke up with her, and she's now leaving her best friend and the place she calls home to go live in her aunt's house.
With the company of her dad Brad, they leave everything behind and are now looking forward to a new start. They move to Brad's sister house, Darlene, which has a fascination of making Emily more feminine. Now living with her aunt isn't going to be easy, and add that she has the perfect cousin, Whitney. Even her grandmother favorites her cousin over her.
Emily is not your typical girl. She doesn't care about make-up, clothes and doesn't even own a cellphone. But underneath, she's having some faith issues. She can't pray; not since her mom died. Emily feels lost and everyone around her seem to know their way. She's a loner and keeps to herself. But maybe things aren't as bad at they seem. There's this really cute guy next door named Zander. Will Emily be able to impress him with her mechanical skills?
First of all, this book talks a lot about faith and God. But before you stop reading this because of that factor, hear me out. Even the main character has a hard time with her faith and the religion of those around her. It's doesn't come easy for her to trust God as it does for the others. Apart from the religion factor, this book was different because the main character is a tomboy, and there's not a lot of that in the Young Adult world. She isn't afraid to get her hands dirty with some grease.
Her family, which now includes her aunt and her husband and their two kids, Logan and Whitney are amazingly written. Especially Whitney. She's the one that took me by surprise. She isn't what you expect at all. Emily's dad, Brad, tries to be the best father he can be but he's also grieving and has lost his job.
Let me tell you, I laughed while reading this book. I got happy and sometimes I could totally relate to what Emily was going trough. Other times I wish the author had let the character's actions speak for themselves and not tell us exactly what they were thinking.
Sometimes Emily was feeling possessive of Zander; jealous I should say, even when she haven't met him yet. And her mood changed constantly. Maybe it was that she's a teenager; maybe that was the way she was grieving for the lost of her mother.
Overall, it was a good read. It showed me that no one is perfect and we have to cherish the time we have with our family. That God is always there and that friends and family is the best support system we can have.

Enjoyable YA Read That's Touching and Filled with Hope!

I knew this book was good even before I'd finished the first chapter. Emily is dealing with the death of her mom and moving with her dad to her aunt's house as well as a new high school all at once. She's also sorting through her faith and what's left of it even though she was always a believer before her mom passed away. It's very easy to relate to this character even without experiencing the loss of a loved one and despite all that goes down, there is so much humor and hope in the story.
Emily loves to work on cars and that's the best way she finds in dealing with her grief and connecting with God once again. I know nothing about cars, but the story is so well written I was pulled in as Emily sorts through her feelings. I loved her personality and even though her attitude bothered me at times, I understood her feelings completely. I also feel more comfortable wearing jeans and sneakers than dresses :)
Loved Chelsea and wished friends like her existed in real life :) Zander is a wonderful guy, but so much more than a hottie or typical crush. He gets Emily, prays with her and for her, and his friendship is very special. I was amazed at his patience and understanding with her. I also really liked Whitney, despite how she gets off on the wrong foot with Emily. She became my hero in the end at how she backs Emily up.
Emily's dad is involved with her, but he comes off as a minor character in this because he has to deal with his grief differently. I kept hoping he'd stick up for Emily, but he did what he had to do. I enjoyed his conversations with Emily, but also hated when they got into arguments. His birthday present to Emily was so very precious!
Have lots of tissues ready to read this story, but soooo well done and loved every part of it!
