Barron discusses the ways in which the differing scriptural interpretations inherent in various evangelical attempts to apply biblical texts to 21st century America lead to largely unresolved stalemates in political thinking, eschatology, and interpretation of the Kingdom of God. The book also includes his personal evaluation and critique, offering some broadly based statements on tactics for evangelical worldview development, political action, and spiritual unity in modern America.

A CRITIQUE OF "CHRISTIAN RECONSTRUCTION"

The author wrote in the "Acknowledgements" section of this 1992 book, "When I began the research that led to this book, my speciality was the contemporary charismatic movement. But the charismatics I wanted to study were politically active, and thus to put them in proper context I had to study other politically inclined ideas and thinkers. The scope kept getting broader, and before I finished I found that I had entered a totally new field---in my full-time career as well as in my writing."
He observes, "James Jordan has pointed out a far more substantial cause of the movement's division into Vallecito, California (Rushdoony) and Tyler, Texas (North) factions: Rushdoony sees the family but North sees the church as the most important social institution... North and Tyler ... emphasize strict church discipline, while Rushdoony minimizes the importance of the institutional church." (Pg. 42-43)
He states, "Pentecostals, without denying the validity of the Old Testament, believe Christians should look mainly to the New Testament and to the direction of the Holy Spirit for guidance in life. (This is one reason why Reconstructionists and charismatic or Pentecostal Christians often have difficulty in relating to each other even when they share the goal of Christian social dominion.)" (Pg. 49)
He warns, "(Dave) Hunt and (Hal) Lindsey may have unwittingly contributed to the Reconstructionist cause... the Reconstructionists have gained far greater profit by leapfrogging on their adversaries' already-established popularity. They find Hunt especially useful, because he is unhesitant to enter into public debate and is relatively unschooled on fine points of church history and theology." (Pg. 117)
He suggests, "to call on Christians to transform every area of life may be the pride that precedes a fall, as it encourages Christians to speak where they lack competence... many areas of modern life require technical skills unrelated to questions of spiritual regeneration or ethical judgment. Christians have no clear edge over unbelievers in determining the nation's defense needs or in assessing the dangers of global warming." (Pg. 166-167)
He warns, "They are right to warn about the dangers inherent in an expanding state, but ... To eliminate the state totally from social welfare would, barring uncharacteristic mushrooming of private-sector generosity, leave the underprivileged with no assistance in overcoming conditions (ghetto upbringing, mental or physical handicaps, lack of educational opportunity) they face by no fault of their own; their alienation ... might push them into socially disruptive behavior." (Pg. 173-174)
This is an excellent critique of the Christian Reconstruction movement, and should be read by persons on BOTH sides of the debate.
