For skeptics and believers alike

Raised? Finding Jesus by Doubting the Resurrection showed up on my doorstep on Good Friday. I had been hoping it would arrive before Easter and the timing was just perfect.
In this short book Jonathan Dodson and Brad Watson make the case for the plausibility of the resurrection and draw out the implications of the event. Raised is written for skeptics and for those who doubt the claims of Christianity. The book is nicely compact, containing only four manageable chapters. (As an aside, I think more books should be about this length).
In chapter 1, the authors make the case for the resurrection. They do so by demonstrating that both Jews and Greeks would have been incredulous about the resurrection. It would have been seen as either impossible or undesirable or both. Yet, thousands of both Jews and Greeks immediately began professing the risen Lord, in many cases to their own detriment. The most plausible explanation, say the authors, is if Jesus really did rise from the dead.
Chapters 2 outlines how the resurrection fits into God’s cosmic plan of rescue. Chapter 3 gives some nice explanations of faith, sin, and salvation. Chapter 4 draws out personal implications of the resurrection. The authors show how the resurrection gives us a new authority, identity, and mission.
I found Raised? to be a nice book to read through on the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. It’s short enough to work through in a few sittings. Some others who reviewed the book found it to be a little too academic. For me, this makes it more uplifting than a lot of other Christian “fluff” out there.
Its intended audience, though, is unbelievers or skeptics. The book is apologetic and evangelistic. Chapter 1 is apologetic (and I expected the whole book to be this kind of book) and the rest of the book is really not much more than the basics of the gospel – well presented. I found this book to be very much in the line of the writings of Tim Keller. Specifically, I would describe this book as The Reason for God light. It’s much shorter and more focused but it accomplishes many of the same goals. Keller and these authors share the same vision of the resurrection and the differences between “religion” and gospel.
Keller presents a more compelling case in Reason for God and it’s a better all around apologetics book but Raised? has one big advantage – it’s shorter length. This length makes it a lot more accessible – and easier to hand out. Now to find the right person to give it to…

5 Reason to Read Raised?

I recently finished reading Raised? Finding Jesus by Doubting the Resurrection and loved it. I am not aware of another resource this accessible that hones in on the resurrection so well. If you are (or know) a skeptic with heavy reservations about the resurrection, a believer often struggling with doubt, or if you just want to better understand the significance of the resurrection and how it affects everyday life, I encourage you to read this book.
Jonathan and Brad do an excellent job of addressing some large, looming questions and providing readers with a richer understanding of who Jesus was, why he rose, and what it means for each one of us. Here are some of the highlights from the book:
1. Challenges the reader not to settle in cynicism: The authors embrace the difficulty of belief in the resurrection and encourage rigorous questioning of both faith and doubts. They implore the reader, however, to avoid the temptation to settle in cynicism and to commit to finding real, honest answers to their questions.
2. Provides strong arguments for belief: They discuss in detail the massive world-view shift that had to take place in Greek and Jewish believers to accept the resurrection and give the reader several other compelling reasons for faith. The book makes a strong case for the historical plausibility of the resurrection of Christ.
3. Situates the resurrection in the story of Scripture: The book also places the death and resurrection of Christ into the large narrative of Scripture. By doing this, the authors give the reader a new sense of the significance of the resurrection as the fulfillment of God's promise of redemption and the beginning of the process of new creation.
4. Provides practical stories of resurrection life: For those wondering how the resurrection might break into the everyday and have tangible effects beyond intellectual assent, Jonathan and Brad share important implications of generosity, love, and hope that are byproducts of a resurrected life in Christ. They also share personal stories giving evidence to this new life.
5. It's Jesus-centered: The best thing about this book is that it all centers on the living Jesus himself. It seems that many people arguing for the truth of the resurrection leave Jesus out of the whole process and address only the intellect. Jonathan and Brad articulate the truth in the midst of our struggle for faith - that Jesus is actually living now, entertaining our doubts and imploring belief in us, much like he did with Thomas. This is profound. They articulate the critical nuance that we are called not merely to faith in the resurrection, but to faith in a resurrected Christ. That we are not called only to an intellectual worldview, but to know, worship, and enjoy the living Jesus.

For those doubting Jesus' resurrection

Belief in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has always been an essential part of the gospel. Believing that Jesus died is one thing – believing that He rose again is quite another.
If you doubt the resurrection, that's good, the authors write. “Anything worth believing is worth questioning.” They want you to make sure you have good reasons for believing or not believing in the resurrection.
The authors explore the biblical characters who doubted, the vast number of Christians who do believe it today, and the consideration that it just might possibly be true. They review the Greek and Jewish thought at the time of Jesus and how hard it would have been for them to believe in a resurrection. They explore the role the resurrection has had in human history and what it means to individuals. The belief structure around the resurrection is reviewed (such as faith and sin). The benefits of believing in the resurrection and living that truth are also explained.
If you have thought about Jesus' resurrection but have doubts, this would be a good book for you to read. The authors show that Jesus' resurrection is intellectually plausible. They show how life is changed when you believe in the resurrection and what it means to you if you do not embrace the resurrection. It is not a technical book nor is it filled with carefully crafted arguments. It reads as if you were across from the authors sharing a time of coffee.
As they write at the end of their book, Jesus is the one we were made for. Reading this book will help you understand why.
