An Excellent Biography!
By eLynda
This latest installment in the Get to Know series by Nancy I. Sanders gives us an in-depth look at the Apostle Paul. The biography begins in Tarsus and then on to Jerusalem, providing context about the places and time Paul lived. Sanders shares about the Biblical history important during the time and Paul’s education as a Pharisee, supplying a good basis to understand Paul’s persecution of the Church; his zeal leads him to travel to Damascus to arrest Christians there, but the entire course of his life is changed by his conversion. Spending the rest of his life spreading the Gospel, Paul’s three missionary journeys are highlighted with maps and pictures of the areas to which he traveled.

One of the best things about this book was the breadth of information it relayed about Paul’s life as well as placing him in the larger Biblical context. This book really helps children understand why Paul behaved the way he did before his conversion. The amount of detail is remarkable, drawing extensively on the Bible and pulling in Strabo and Josephus where appropriate; even adults will come away from the biography learning new things if they are paying attention.

I also really appreciated the various forms of illustrations. There are photos of Bible lands, including ruins of ancient cities, buildings, and even some of the very roads Paul may have walked on his missionary journeys. Famous artwork depicting Biblical scenes are present as well, and drawings fill in the blanks where appropriate. Clear maps uncomplicated by unnecessary detail show us the vast distances Paul travelled and a helpful timeline is located at the end of the book, providing a very concise look at when various events took place. Also included is a bibliography, and the source notes are mostly Biblical references where the author does not quote the Bible directly within the text. This was especially helpful for those “how do you know that?” moments, leading directly back to what the Bible had to say instead of leaving the reader to wonder where it came from.

If I wanted to be nit-picky, there were a few small items that mildly annoyed me, such as not defining the word “martyr” the first time it is used (though it was defined three pages later, at the end of the chapter). This was a rarity, however; in every other instance, terms that might be confusing and some that I would have tended to gloss over are defined at an age-appropriate level. Even though the author uses valid but adult terms like Messiah, apostle, resurrection and the like, “Christian-ese” is not allowed to confuse the reader because the words are almost always explained with their first use.

The only real complaint I have is a very regrettable typo that appears in the third chapter. While attempting to explain that the Pharisees’ additional rules were not as important as Scripture, a word is omitted and the sentence instead reads: “Jesus taught that the traditions of the Jews were not as important as the Scriptures said.” To me, this particular sentence reads that Scripture says their traditions are important and Jesus says they are not. We know that is definitely not the case because Jesus never contradicts Scripture. Jesus’ problem was that the Pharisees were elevating their rules to the same level as Scripture, not with the Scriptures themselves, which are without error. This could easily confuse a child, especially if he or she does not ask an adult about it, and lead to a whole host of theological confusion. For example, if Jesus does not think Scripture is important, why should I?

Despite that inopportune typo, I really liked this biography. It is written in an accessible format with short sentences and chapters appropriate for holding the attention of children aged 6-10 and the chronological presentation helps kids to better understand Paul’s life and ministry. The layout of the book is both interesting and engaging; the color-coding is helpful for comprehension and visually appealing. This is the first book in the series I have read, but after seeing the quality of the content and the way it is presented, I will be looking into the other books for my children as well.

About the Author

We really enjoyed reading the book Get to Know Apostle Paul. It is an easy to manage paperback book, but the pages are a good quality thick paper and glossy. The book Apostle Paul is filled with beautiful photos and maps including full page photos that give children a wonderful visual to connect with. I really liked that there is a lot of review through out the book but it is done in an easy way. At the end of each chapter is a short summery of what was just read. It also includes interesting facts and vocabulary definitions. These are done in a different colour text then the reset of the chapter and help to grab the children's attention. This is a wonderful Christian biography for children. I would think it would be good for ages 8 and up or used as a family read aloud with younger children. I’m looking forward to reading the other books in this series!

great biography for kids
By sclubmama
I'll be honest. I don't read my kids a lot of non-fiction books for one simple reason - they are boring! This includes books on cars or plants or animals or biographies. Our ratio is probably 20:1, the one being the non-fiction we read. Not that I don't like information. I really do, but fiction books provide a LOT of information, just in a more fun way. So I was leery of this biography on Paul: "Get to Know Apostle Paul." I also know my kids needed to hear more about the lives of people they read about in the Bible (or we read to them from the Bible about).

My kids are not so keen on chapter books, no matter how many times I explain you don't read a chapter book in one sitting (unless you're their mama). But we have both been pleasantly surprised by this "Get to Know Apostle Paul." It's taken us awhile to get through because we only read 1/2 - 1 chapter a night (we average 3 books at night so sometimes we read bits and pieces of larger books).

I love the pictures in the book: paintings, graphics, pictures of archeology. They are beautifully reproduced in this book. I love the definitions of big words and phrases: false teachers, Sabbath, conversion, Good News. It simplifies it for children without dumbing it down. There are boxes with "Did You Know?" facts, "Eyewitness Accounts," and "Bible Hero" information (can you guess our favorite?).

This is a very informative book that breaks up Paul's life prior to conversion, his life-changing walk to Damascus, his life after encountering Christ, all the way to his death. I even love the fonts in this book. They aren't hard to read, they are clear and fun.

If you want your children to go deeper into the lives of Paul, Jesus, or Mary (those are the 3 in this series I know of; there may be more or more on the way?), please check out this "Get to Know" series.
