K-Gr 3–Flamingo and Anteater engage in humorous banter as they narrate stories related to the Old Testament. Get Me to the Ark joins a host of other picture books about Noah. This time the giraffes have the starring role. Although the other animals laugh at their long necks and legs, those attributes help them rescue the slow-moving turtles from the impending flood. Their unselfish love for others is rewarded when they have the honor of disembarking first at journey's end. Black uses Jacob's gift to Joseph of a multicolored coat as a jumping-off point for the tale of Gus, an unusual goat that loves to dive and swim. Jacob's elderly servant misunderstands his master's instructions and paints Gus to create a goat of many colors. Frightened by this treatment, Gus flees to a herd of wild goats that designate him as leader because of his unusual markings. He enjoys the privileges that come from being "top goat" until his orders almost lead to tragedy. When he dives in a pond to save a small goat, his paint washes away, and the others feel deceived. However, they all soon realize that each has a special, God-given talent. The color cartoon illustrations are pleasant but unexceptional. These picture books could serve as supplemental titles in church libraries open to using humor as a way to convey messages of faith.Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato

This action- and wit-packed riff on the biblical story of Joseph’s coat uses a comics format to painlessly show how being different from one’s herd can be a challenge, a potential power, and a disguise. Unlike the other goats, Gus is a risk taker. When he is winnowed from the herd by Jacob’s hard-of-hearing servant and painted colorfully, Gus wanders into the desert and discovers a new herd, which worships his difference. The newfound power goes to Gus’ head and almost leads to disaster, but his quick thinking saves the day and redeems him in the eyes of the desert goats, who feel deceived when his paint washes off. The bright artwork features a storytelling flamingo and a less-than-patient anteater as the visible and verbal audience to this lively and endearing morality tale within a morality tale. There is no heavyweight theology in this one, but lots of opportunity to discuss insights—as well as puns. Preschool-Grade 3. --Francisca Goldsmith

The Goat of Many Colors is an original interpretation of the well known Bible story of Joseph and the coat of many colors, rethought especially for kids. Narrated by a comic pair of animals, a yakky flamingo and an interrupting anteater, The Goat of Many Colors tells the tale of a diving goat with special gifts who finds his true calling in a herd of wild goats after being rejected because of his differentness by the regular herd. It’s a rollicking tale with a solid faith-reinforcing ending, and every page is crammed with humorous cartoons and funny puns and jokes. The Goat of Many Colors is sure to make kids want to read more Bible stories and be true to themselves and God just to see where all the laughs are coming from. (The Midwest Book Review)

There's nothing not to like! Witty, funny and brilliantly illustrated.
By Tanya Dennis
At first glance, you may think this is another book about Joseph. But really it's a completely different story, one of a multi-colored, fancy-diving goat, as told by the comedic duo of Flamingo and Anteater.

Written and illustrated by Cuyler Black, "The Goat of Many Colors" begins with a wealthy landowner named Jacob who owns a lot of goats. Most of them do nothing but eat grass and bump heads, but one of them is special. Gus discovers by accident that he really likes diving. The other goats, however, think he's strange for repeatedly jumping off a cliff into water.

Meanwhile Jacob asks a servant to go get a coat of many colors for this favorite son. The servant misunderstands and thinks Jacob said GOAT instead of coat. Not finding a multi-colored goat, he decides to make one. As the servant attempts to slap paint all over him, Gus runs away into the wilderness where he wakes the next morning surrounded by a herd of wild goats.

Seeing his strange colors the wild goats believe Gus is a special goat sent by God to rule over them. What ensues is a hysterical tale of special gifts, individuality and self-worth.

WHAT I LIKE: Everything! This story is witty and funny. The kids love it! The illustrations are inviting, full of character and color. The text is clear and relatively simple, perfect for emerging readers. There's nothing not to like about this book.

WHAT I DISLIKE: Nothing.

OVERALL RATING: Excellent.

Short & Cute
By Bible Believer
This is another short, cute and funny book, which sticks with Bible truths but with a sense of humor. The animals are humorous and the text funny BUT the point of the story, to elaborate on God's love, is not lost but instead is right there too. My grandchildren and I chuckled all the way through making it a good purchase for them (it is for a younger reader but works good having them on your lap and being read to!).
